CONTACT INFORMATION
CHILE AND PATAGONIA
Chile is a long and narrow country that lies between the Andes Mountains and the Pacific Ocean in the
southwestern part of South America. Its latitude coordinates range from 17° 30‘ S in the southern highlands to 56°
30‘ S in continental Chile and 90° S in the Antarctic territory.
The Patagonia is one of
the most beautiful parts of
Chile. Since its discovery
almost 500 years ago, it
continues to be described
as exotic, remote, and
wild.
Because Pat agonia ’s
climate is defined by four
discrete seasons, we can
appreciate its everc hanging landscapes,
colors, and lighting all
year round.

HUILO HUILO FOUNDATION
OUR HISTORY AND 3-PILLAR PHILOSOPHY
Huilo Huilo is located in the heart of the Patagonian Forest, in
Region of Los Rios (the Rivers). It is reserve that contains
100,000 hectares of amazingly biodiverse temperate rainforest.
It is home to endangered species, majestic mountains, volcanoes,
glacial lakes, and countless streams, as well as the highest
number of fern species in continental Chile.
Our goal at Huilo Huilo is to delight our visitors with the magic
of Patagonia. We strive to protect and preserve the temperate
rainforest while integrating local communities so as to improve
both present and future generations’ quality of
life.
The Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve practices a new concept of sustainable development, which is based on three
essential pillars:
•Conservation: conservation of biodiversity through research and flagship projects, such as the Huemul
Conservation Center
•Integration of the Community: active incorporation of local communities, generating new jobs and offering training
in various disciplines, including programs with local schools. This helps those who live here, in addition our
visitors, discover the area’s worth.
•Special Interest Tourism: the new addition to the area’s economy, which will allow projection towards the future.
The Huilo Huilo Foundation enforces the implementation and development of the first two pillars.

OUR HISTORY AND 3-PILLAR PHILOSOPHY
HUILO HUILO FOUNDATION
Our Mission
Our mission is to protect, preserve and restore the temperate rainforest, while integrating local communities in
order to create a better quality of life for present and future generations.
With this objective in mind, we have developed conservational, social and educational programs, designed to
change old paradigms and to incentivize small businesses and the sustainable development of the
area.
Our Vision
Our vision is that through the
recovery of natural and cultural
values, the local community will
develop a sustainable economy
which in turn will provide a
better quality of life for its
members, in which they live in
harmony with the environment
and base their development on
the appreciation and
conservation of the temperate
rainforest, water systems and
other ecosystems.

OUR HISTORY AND 3-PILLAR PHILOSOPHY
HUILO HUILO FOUNDATION
Strategic Objectives
•Protect the temperate rainforest, the water systems, and other ecosystems.
•Restore damaged ecosystems through ecological landscaping and botanical restoration projects with conservation
criteria. Part of this task is to protect amphibians, birds, insects, and mammals through on-site conservation projects,
monitoring projects, reproduction projects, and reintegration projects for vulnerable and endangered species.
•Develop and support scientific research projects that allow a thorough understanding of biological processes so as to
conserve native species and ecosystems, as well as the study of the geological and glaciological origins of the reserve.
•Revive local cultural values through projects and literary competitions; research and publications of stories, legends,
and poetry; and the development of music and dance.
•Develop a local economy based on conservation and sustainability. In this way, we seek to open new areas of
activity and generate entrepreneurial initiatives through vocational training and academic and technical education.
•Contribute to the development of environmental awareness in the community through publications and the sharing of
nature’s worth.

INTRODUCTION TO HUILO HUILO
THE HUILO HUILO FUNDATION
FLORA AND FAUNA CONSERVATION
Programs
1. Protection and reintegration of the “huemul del sur”, the south Andean deer
2. Study of the habitat range of “pumas” , local wilds cats
3. Reintroduction of the “guanaco”, a local llama-type mammal
Scientific Areas
•Conservation project for the “Sapito de Darwin”, Darwin’s frog.
•Identification of the entomological fauna (insects) of Huilo Huilo.
•Study of the effects of climate change on the Mocho Choshuenco glacial biomass.
•Collection for the Native Flora Herbarium Project: the collection and preservation of seeds.
•Study of the phytoplankton community of Pirehueico Lake.
•Land use and zoning project.
The Conservation of the Native Forest
supports existence of native birds like the chucao, the
kingfisher, the black woodpecker, and our small native deer, the pudú. At higher elevations, you’ll find pumas,
huiñas (another species of wild cat), and high mountain birds, such as the majestic condor.
The forest’s undergrowth is full of orchids, alstroemeria (Peruvian lilies), multicolored vines, ferns, fungi, lichens
and mosses. This allows for the development of species such as the stag beetle, the golden butterfly, and
Darwin’s frog.

INTRODUCTION TO HUILO HUILO
HUILO HUILO FOUNDATION
LOCAL COMMUNITY INTEGRATION
Originally, logging and the lumber industry gave Neltume and Puerto Fuy economic boosts and
opportunities. However, due to the private nature reserve project which began ten years ago, things
are now changing. Located in a 60,000-hectare section of the Valdivian forest, this reserve contains
natural hot springs, unexplored lakes, and direct access to the Mocho-Choshuenco Volcano.
The reserve helps to give people a new perspective of the forest, encouraging them to move out of the
forestry and logging business to a way of life based more on conservation and sustainability.
The Huilo Huilo project has since led to a new era based on the beauty of its landscapes, the value of its
flora and fauna and especially its magnificent native forest. This has caused the people of Neltume,
characterized by their welcoming nature and entrepreneurial capacity, to fall in love with the forest
again and to gradually develop a process of conversion
Huilo Huilo subsequently acquired a 40,000-hectare logging area on the northern shore of Lake
Pirehueico in order to annex the reserve's territory through a management plan that is now under study.
Thanks to the hard work of the Huilo Huilo Foundation, we have accomplished a high degree of local
community participation, generating new on-site jobs and offering training in different disciplines as well
as programs in local schools. We believe that this will improve the community members’ quality of life,
allowing conversion for the local people while preserving local culture.
Today, 90% of the people working at Huilo Huilo are from local communities.

TREKKING
Trekking is an essential activity
here at Huilo Huilo, and is one of
the best ways to explore the
reserve.
The reserve has several trails of
different intensities, surrounded by
beautiful woods, rivers, lakes,
local flora and fauna, and
volcanic formations.
EDUCATIONAL TRAILS
Here is a fun way to learn about
the local nature and culture of
Huilo Huilo.
With a series of different trails
that visit local villages and
surrounding Mapuche
communities, we will show you
both wildlife and the arts and
crafts of our people.
SNOW ADVENTURE
(JULY-SEPTEMBER)
In the eternal snow-covered
slopes of the Andean volcano
Mocho-Choshuenco, there are
exciting activities to enjoy in the
snow. Our biggest highlights
include the snow park,
backcountry skiing and
snowboarding, tubing, and
snowmobile tours.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
In Huilo Huilo, there are multiple
cycling trails throughout the
forest.
There is marvelous flora and
fauna to be seen from the
different types of terrain.
The reserve has also been the site
of prestigious professional
mountain bike racing.
HORSEBACK RIDING
Huilo Huilo offers horseback
riding for riders with or without
experience who want to
experience the beautiful forests
of the Patagonia.
Younger guests can also enjoy
this activity with pony rides.
HOT SPRINGS
The groundwater located on the
northern shore of Pirehueico Lake
provide hot thermal water for
these little hot springs.
The hot springs are connected by
small walkways. The springs can
be reached by boat or by a 3-day
self-guided tour.
FLY FISHING
The reserve contains many
different areas for sport fishing;
the highlight is our fishing lodge
on the banks of Quilmo Lake.
Rainbow trout is the most
common type of fish in the Huilo
Huilo waters.
SAILING
Beginning in the town of Puerto
Fuy, the serene waters of Lake
Pirehueico are a beautiful view.
You can either walk the shores
or take a relaxing boat ride
through the lake. You can also
visit our thermal center.
VEHICLE EXPEDITION
Huilo Huilo has a large amount of
trails and paths for motorbikes
and 4-wheel -drive cars.
The best thing to do is to drive
into the woods, leave the vehicle
in a clear area, and then carry on
by foot.
GAME ADVENTURE
The reserve contains areas in
which to practice archery or
play a game of paintball.
Activities should be organized
prior to the arrival at the
reserve.
KAYAKING
The pristine waters of Pirehueico
Lake are ideal for kayaking.
Starting from the western shore,
you can explore its secluded and
pristine beaches and islands.
ZIP LINING
For those who want to "fly" over
the forest canopy there are three
levels of zip lining: the "Flying

flights of the "Eagle" and
"Condor" for adults. Both adult
zip liens have 4 lines with a total
length of 1 km and a height of 90
meters.
MOUNTAIN
The reserve is located in the
Andes and surrounded by
mountains and volcanic
formations, most notably the
volcano Mocho-Choshuenco
(2,415 meters). You can hike up
to one or both peaks of the
glacier.
WATER ADVENTURE
The environment of the
Patagonian forest and the clear
waters of the Fuy River are the

enthusiasts. The Fuy River
contains class III and IV rapids;
this activity is a must for those
who like a fun, adrenaline-filled
adventure.

Climate
The Patagonian Temperate Rainforest is located in Chilean territory, between 38°30’ S and 55°30’ S latitudes, east
of the Andes Mountain range. It is known for its abundant, year-round precipitation and for its temperate summers
(with temperatures reaching 30 °C/86 °F). This rainy climate is due to the humidity carried by the anticyclonic winds
from the South Pacific, which then condenses due to the cold coastal currents of Humboldt. The humidity falls as rain
when it enters the continent, and then dissipates when it reaches the Andes upon colliding with the dry winds that
come from the Argentinian Patagonia region.
Physical Demands
Our 6-day Patagonian Rainforest Crossing program requires some physical ability, as the program does not include
any high-difficulty excursions. Any additional activities or excursions can be selected by each guest to match its
physical ability. The activities mentioned in the program are suggested only, we have severeal optional activities, also
included in the program rate to choose from in case you would like to change the ones offered to other less active.
We also offer additional activities and excursions that can be booked directly at our Excursion Centre.
If you have a special condition or disability that might impede you from joining us on the program, please consult with

What You Shouldn’t Forget
It is very important to come prepared for both summer and winter on all trips. You should bring (for Patagonian
Rainforest Crossing) a comfortable backpack for traveling, trekking shoes, a windbreaker (important!), a parka,
comfortable pants for walking, a swimming suit, a camera, a flashlight, sunblock, sunglasses, a change of clothes in
case of rain, and a hat and/or bandana to protect you from the sun.
The program includes snow activities, so we recommend that our guests bring an impermeable parka and pants, ski
goggles or UV protection sunglasses, and ski/snowboard equipment. Huilo Huilo has a small rental shop for all of
these items in their Ski Center, so make sure to ask about details and available sizes before your trip if you are
planning on using these services.
It is also important to bring cash in case you would like to buy souvenirs. Many of the services offered at the hotel
accept credit/ debit cards; however there are no ATMs from which to withdraw money, so make sure to bring some
cash in case you want to shop at a local artisanal store.

Day 1: Arrival at Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve: the adventure begins!
En route from airport to Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Chile
The trip begins when our team picks up our group at the Puerto Montt airport. We’ll head to Neltume, a small town 3 km from
the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve hotels, in the county of Panguipulli. We’ll arrive at the hotel and have dinner before heading
to our lodgings in the Montaña Magica Hotel.
Day 2: Trek from the Península to Pilmaiquén Grasslands
Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Chile
After breakfast, a transfer will take the group to Puerto Fuy, 3 kilometers from the hotel. A boat will be expecting us and we’ll
head to the Peninsula through the Pirehueico lake. The serenity of the lake contrasts strongly with the fauna that live there. It is a
beautiful journey which will prepare us for our upcoming trek. We’ll arrive at the Peninsula, where we’ll start the trek to the
Pilmaiquén Grasslands. On our way, we will see beautiful volcanic landscapes and majestic forests, and make stops at several
wildlife observation points. Immediately following the Guanacos Reserve, we’ll arrive at the banks of the Rio Blanco (White
River), where our base camp will be waiting for us.
Day 3: Trek along the Los Volcancitos path towards Mocho’s base camp
Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Chile
We’ll wake up to a beautiful view of Rio Blanco. We’ll have breakfast next to a bonfire, and then then begin our trek through a
series of craters of the Volcancitos (little volcanoes) complex. We’ll observe how the volcanic activity throughout the years has
determined the type of woods and the size and the shape of the trees there, as well as the flora and fauna. The last eruption in
1864 created the Mocho Volcano’s crater. We’ll arrive at the source of Rio Truful (Truful river) at sunset, an area surrounded by
large cliffs shaped by ancient glaciers. We will then reach at our second base camp at Rucas de Montaña.

Day 4: Trek from base camp to the Mocho’s summit
Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Chile
Black woodpeckers, small eagles, austral parakeets, condors, wild boars, red deer, pumas and wild cows among many other
species live in this area, and it is likely that we will wake up to the particular sounds of one of these animals. We’ll have
breakfast next to a bonfire to keep warm, and then begin the last part of our trip: the journey up to Mocho’s summit for a
spectacular panoramic view of the Volcancitos complex. (Optional extension: journey up to the Choshuenco summit. Advanced
climbing knowledge required.)
During this part of the trek, we will notice a dramatic change in landscape; the dense forest will become a Lenga (Nothofagus
pumilio) forest, filled with clearings. We will then enter a Pygmy forest of Ñirre (Nothofagus antartica) and low brush. It will be
midday, which is the perfect time to appreciate the beautiful combination of lights and shadows covering yesterday’s trail. We
will make the journey from an altitude of 1700 kilometers to the top of the Mocho Volcano (at an altitude of 2420 kilometers)
with the help of snowshoes (or randonee skies), as the trail is covered with snow covering the Mocho centenary glacier. When
we finally reach Mocho’s summit, we will see the breathtaking panoramic view of the Volcancitos complex. If it is a clear day,
we will see the (level 1200) Villarrica, Llaima, Quetrupillán, Lanín, Cordillera del Encanto, Cordillera de Los Andes, Tronador
(Casablanca), Descabezado, Puntiagudo, and Osorno volcanoes.
We will then descend to an altitude of 1800 kilometers where a transfer bus will pick us up and take us back to the hotel. We’ll
enjoy our last meal together at Montaña Mágica Hotel, where we’ll share our photos and videos from our adventures.
Day 5: Departure Day

RATES AND CONDITIONS
Climate
The Patagonian temperate rain forest is located in Chilean territory, between latitude 38 ° 30'S to 55 ° 30'S, west of the Andes.
It is characterized by its abundant rainfall throughout the year and its warmer summers (hot days reaching 30 degrees Celsius).
This rainy weather is the product of moisture carried by anticyclonic winds from the South Pacific, which are condensed by the
cold coastal Humboldt Current. Upon entering the continent, this humidity falls as rain on the Andes, and dissipates when
colliding with dry winds from the Argentinian Patagonian steppes.
Physical Demand
The Huilo Huilo Multi-Adventure Program combines different disciplines and outdoor sports such as mountain biking, trekking,
rafting and Zipline/canopy. Day 2 of the program requires the greatest physical effort. Trekking activities (10 km) and mountain
bike (6 kilometers) are performed on rocky terrain with steep slopes up and down, by trail or road in the middle the forest.
The rafting activity is active and challenging, on category III / IV rapids. The team constantly paddles to correct direction, and
navigation time is approximately 2 hours, throughout the entirety of which you will have contact with water. The zipline/canopy
activity requires no particular physical condition except a maximum weight of 100 kilos (220 lbs) to perform the activity.
Physical fitness and health is required for the entire program. If you have any special conditions that could be an impediment,
consult before making your booking to avoid inconveniences.
What You Shouldn’t Forget
It is very important to come prepared for winter and summer in all trips. It is important to bring a comfortable backpack for
trekking (minimum 3 liters/ 1 gallon), trekking shoes, windbreaker, parka, comfortable to walking shorts, swimsuit, camera,
headlamp, sunscreen, sunglasses, enough spare clothes in case of rain, hat, and / or bandana.
It is important to bring cash if you want to buy souvenirs. Many amenities have enabled credit card payment system, but there
are no ATMs to withdraw money in case you need to buy local crafts.

We’ll arrive at the hotel and have dinner before heading
to our lodgings in Nothofagus Hotel & Spa.
Day 2: Pilmaiquén Grasslands and the Fungus or Bryophyte Route.
Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Chile
After breakfast, our voyage begins. We’ll dedicate our morning to discovering the amazingly diverse flora and fauna that the
Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve is home to. We’ll go to the ‘Los Patos’ (The Ducks) lagoon, found in the Pilmaiquén grasslands,
by Jeep. After a 15-minute walk, we’ll arrive at a fauna-sighting tower, a fantastic way to observe all the species that make this
lagoon their home. The lagoon is fed by rainwater during the rainy season, and tends to dry up during the summer, evidence of
changes in temperature that create an abundant amount of food for nesting birds of the area. After 45 minutes, we’ll make our
way to a second tower, which is located in front of the Guanacos sector, an ideal place to view the great variety of species of
the area. After 30 minutes of observation, we’ll make our way to the Guanacos base camp (which has restrooms available) to
enjoy lunch accompanied by a selection of Chilean red wines.
Once we’ve had lunch, we’ll begin our descent by vehicle towards our day’s last activity: the Fungi Route. A spyglass and
manual will be provided during our activity and our expert guide will teach us how to identify the different species of fungi that
thrive in this Patagonian Temperate Rainforest. Afterwards, we’ll head back to the hotel to a nice dinner and the comfortable
accommodations of the Nothofagus Hotel & Spa. 1/2

Day 3: Botanical Trail and Cua Cua River Wetlands
Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Chile
After breakfast, we’ll head towards the Huilo Huilo Portal to begin our trek. Although the elevation does not change
during the trek, the trail showcases several contrasting and beautiful sights. During our easy-paced trek, which will last
approximately 3 hours, our expert guide will tell us the most relevant and interesting facts about each specie that lives
in the riverbanks south of the Río Fuy. We’ll then arrive at a curious little lagoon and make our return through the
area’s grasslands, which have a beautiful view of the Mocho-Choshuenco Volcano.
We will return to the hotel for lunch, and in the afternoon, our the last adventure of the Wildlife Safari will take place.
We will go on a soft off-road excursion on 4x4 Jeeps and explore the wetlands of the Cua Cua River, home to many
diverse species of birds, from a wide variety of duck species to the native black-necked swan. In some selected areas,
we’ll explore trails by foot, and then finish the excursion by vehicle. We’ll arrive at the Quilmio Bridge to enjoy some
coffee, tea, herbal matte, and hot chocolate, and then return to the hotel. We’ll have a last meal together, share the
photos and videos from our adventures, and enjoy our last night in the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve.
Day 4: Day of Return

Climate
The Patagonian Temperate Rainforest is located in Chilean territory, between 38°30’ S and 55°30’ S latitudes, east of the Andes
Mountain range. It is known for its abundant, year-round precipitation and for its temperate summers (with temperatures reaching
30 °C/86 °F). This rainy climate is due to the humidity carried by the anticyclonic winds from the South Pacific, which then
condenses due to the cold coastal currents of Humboldt. The humidity falls as rain when it enters the continent, and then dissipates
when it reaches the Andes upon colliding with the dry winds that come from the Argentinian Patagonia region.
Physical Demands
The programs offered at the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve demand different amounts physical effort. The program “Wildlife
Safari” requires a healthy disposition. The trekking portions are relatively short and of low difficulty, and a large portion of
the program is done in 4x4 Jeeps, which is why it only requires a medium amount of effort.
If you have a special condition or disability that might impede you from joining us on the program, please consult with our
staff before making your reservation in order to avoid future inconveniences.
What You Shouldn’t Forget
It’s very important to come prepared for both summer and winter on all trips. You should bring (for the Wildlife Safari) a
comfortable backpack for trekking (approximately 5 liters), trekking shoes, a windbreaker, a parka, comfortable pants for
walking, a swimming suit, a camera, a flashlight, sunblock, sunglasses, a change of clothes in case of rain, and a hat to
protect you from the sun.
It is also important to bring cash in case you would like to buy souvenirs. Many of the services offered at the hotel accept
credit/debit cards; however there are no ATMs from which to withdraw money, so make sure to bring some cash in case you
want to shop at a local artisanal store.

Day 1: Arrival at Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve: the adventure begins!
En route from airport to Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Chile

the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve hotels, in the county of Panguipulli. We’ll arrive at the hotel and have dinner before heading
to our lodgings in the Fungi Kingdom Lodge.
Day 2: Local Foundation Workshop and Native Tree Nursery Gardens.
Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Chile
After breakfast our journey begins. The Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve’s history has been influenced by various factors, such as
the native Mapuche communities that settled here originally, the volcanic activity that forced them to move away, and the newer
communities that settled after them, all of which have also helped shape the locals’ current culture and customs. Their values
have changed from that of a logging culture to one that today protects the environment through various conservation projects
and generates strong tourist attractions. We will start our day in the Foundation Workshop, where local micro-entrepreneurs will
teach us how to fabricate different products that they have commercialized through the Huilo Huilo Foundation, centering on the
works of magical beings, which represent the various species and elements that can be found in the reserve’s Patagonian
Temperate Rainforest. Artisanal woodwork is also a highlight in these workshops, and this is an ideal time to learn about how
this area works with local wood.
After a nice lunch in the foundation’s café, we’ll have an hour-long tour in which we’ll see how local honey is produced and how
local cheeses are made, followed by a delicious tasting. Afterwards we will head towards our last activity for the day, in the
Llallalca sector, where we’ll see the Native Tree Nursery Gardens where local trees, flowers and herbs are preserved. Here we
will learn how the locals work with these plants, and later enjoy some tea, known in Chile as “once”, at la Tetería and then
return to the hotel.

Day 3: Local Mapuche Culture and Customs
Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve and Neltume Lake, Chile
After breakfast we’ll take a couple of short morning walks to our mountainside destinations. If there is heavy rain, we’ll arrive via
vehicle. First we’ll visit the Museo de los Volcanes (Museum of Volcanoes), where there’s a private collection of historical mining and
woodworking artifacts (ancient locks, lights and rocks), an assortment of old weapons, and a great variety of Mapuche jewelry which
includes old copper utensils used by the Incas.
Afterwards we’ll head towards el Sendero de los Espíritus (the Trail of Spirits), which combines wooden railings and forest floor and is
just a short fifteen-minute walk from the hotels. Legends say that this area used to be an ancient Mapuche burial ground, and locals
tell stories of meeting ancient spirits that lurk in the forest grounds. On this trail, we’ll see enormous wooden totem poles and
anthropomorphic and zoomorphic representations from the different Mapuche deities, while our guide tells us relevant historical facts
accompanied by ancient Mapuche myths and legends. We will then return to the hotel for a nice lunch.
The volcanic activity of the zone also helped to shape the Mapuche culture. Traces of ancient Mapuche communities have been found
underneath the rubble of the most recent volcanic eruption. The volcanic activity also created a series of geological faults, including a
great number of volcanic caves that were formed during the last eruption. We will enter one of these caves, La Cueva de Los Machis
(Machis’ Cave) in the Llallalca sector. The legend says that warlocks and witches (Machis) from different Mapuche communities would
gather in these caves to exchange knowledge. After the cave tour we’ll head towards Lago Neltume (Neltume Lake), which is sacred
to the Mapuche culture, and to the Huilo Huilo Foundation, to learn more about the Mapuches’ rich culture. At the end of the day
we’ll return to the hotel, have a our last dinner, and share our photos.
Day 4: Day of Return
Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve towards Puerto Montt Airport
After a good night’s sleep (which will hopefully be uninterrupted by Mapuche spirits), we'll enjoy breakfast and make our way
towards the Puerto Montt Airport.
