What a summer it’s been! Each of the themed picnics held for residents
throughout the summer were well-attended, and residents also greatly enjoyed
each of them. Thank you to the residents, entertainers, guests, and staff that
made these events so enjoyable for this community!
As we inch closer to the fall season, I want to note that September is National
Healthy Aging Month. September is a great time to be mindful about any
changes you want to make to ensure healthy aging. This isn’t always just about
what you’re eating—we know how much residents, guests, and staff love their
sweets! Healthy aging is about positivity, staying as active as your body allows,
preventative health appointments, and maybe trying something new to lift your
spirits. Our team here at The Pines has been getting remarkable feedback from
the Live 2B Healthy programming that takes place every Monday, Wednesday,
and Friday at 9:30am up in the 3rd floor activity room. I truly encourage any residents who are unsure about to try it out for a day. Residents who regularly attend
this enjoy their time exercising and feel more stable in their day-to-day movements. We also offer chair aerobics every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:00am to
offer residents choice in their exercise routines.
Another event that is taking place in September is the Walk to End Alzheimer’s
Downtown Minneapolis at Target Field. The Pines will be joining Augustana
Care’s team and will be having staff attend the walk. Staff will be raising money
for the Alzheimer’s Association to fight this devastating disease. Our team captain this year is Assistant Housing Director, Jennifer Brown. Please let her know
if you or any of your friends would like to join the Pines Team on the walk, or if
you would like more information on how to donate. We are excited to be a part
of this meaningful walk for a condition that affects so many older adults.
A special “thanks” to residents for being such gracious hosts at some of the marketing events we held over the summer. We are dedicated to ensuring a homelike feel, and want to make sure you have wonderful neighbors surrounding you
as well!

Resident Spotlight
Although Gerry is a Minnesota gal and was raised in Minneapolis, she and her husband,
Bob, resided for portions of each year in Montana, Arizona, and Arkansas. They owned
a vacation home in Big Sky, Montana. In the fall of the year they travelled to the
Ozarks, to Bella Vista, Arkansas. They also enjoyed winters in Scottsdale Arizona.
Gerry and her husband Bob were married for fifty three years. Their meeting might be
described as providence. Gerry’s best friend since grade school was Jean. As it would
turn out, Gerry would marry Jean’s husband’s best friend, Bob. A delightful destiny,
marriage, and a family of three children followed. Gerry has one granddaughter,
Lindsay, who is employed at The Pines, and one great granddaughter Kylee who is
Lindsay’s daughter. Gerry said she is thrilled her family lives close and that she can see
them daily.

Gerry worked as a telephone operator for Northwest Bell Telephone. Gerry took a
sabbatical to raise her children, and returned to Bell Telephone until she retired.
Gerry shared she has had a life-long fondness of miniature poodles. In her apartment
you will find a painted portrait of her beloved black Tea Cup poodle, Suzie. Another
life-long fondness of Gerry’s is a love of jewelry. We enjoy seeing Gerry’s coordinated
outfits, accessories, and colorful earrings. For those who were fans of the television
show Gunsmoke, Gerry can tell you she went to high school with Marshall Matt Dillion.
She and James Arness graduated from Washburn High in Minneapolis the same year.

Hello Everyone,
Danielle Kruger
Director of Health Services
612-259-2892
It is sad to say that summer is coming to an end and winter will be around the corner.
While speaking of winter we cannot forget about the seasonal influenza vaccine. On
Wednesday, September 30th from 10:45-12:00 pm, Homeland Health Specialists will be
putting on the annual Flu Shot Clinic located in the 2nd floor living room at The Pines.
Influenza is a serious respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus that is spread by
air or direct contact. Symptoms of the influenza virus include: fever (usually high), severe
aches and pains in the joints and muscles, generalized weakness, flushed warm and red
skin, watery eyes, and headache. Ways you can protect yourself this flu season is by getting your seasonal influenza vaccine, utilizing good hand washing, sneezing in the crook
of your elbow, and staying home when not feeling well to avoid exposure to others. The
influenza virus is very serious and sometimes deadly especially for young children and the
geriatric population. People that should not get the influenza vaccine are those with an
allergy to eggs and history of Guillain-Barre Syndrome. If you decide to get your seasonal
influenza vaccine and you do not feel good the day of, please contact your physician before receiving the vaccine.
I hope to see many of you at the Flu Shot Clinic on September 30th.
Maintenance Corner
To promote a safe and proper response in the
event of a fire emergency, The Pines along with
the Richfield Fire Department will be performing
a brief fire drill on a monthly basis.
We will be working together with all employees
and all shifts to achieve a level of preparedness.
During the drills the fire alarms may or may not
sound.
Joe Small
Director
Environmental Services
Residents in a common area will be provided
guidance from staff. Residents in their apartments
are asked to remain in their apartments. Apartment and bathroom doors are fire rated doors. All
building magnetic fire doors will release and close.
We will provide signage the day of the drill.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Resident
Services
With many new faces in our community we are hoping there might be
new opportunities for resident activity
participation.
We encourage residents to gather
together to watch sporting events or
Viking games in the 2nd floor living
room. If we have good participation
we will provide snacks and beverages.
Consider being a resident facilitator
who will help facilitate a card game.
We have several residents who have
expressed an interest in playing Bridge
or 500. If you are a devotee, you
might be able to coach other residents
who haven’t played in a while but
would like to get back in the game.
We are open to it being informal. Or
we will work with the Activity Director to put it on our calendar. Activity
Director Kate Johnson is open to
suggestions for activities, movies, and
outing destinations.
