I can’t believe how quickly the summer months are flying by. June and July were filled with
events and warm, beautiful days. The Back-to-the-40’s Summer Picnic held last month was
a big hit for residents and guests alike. Department directors and serving staff had fun
dressing up in 40’s attire, residents enjoyed themed music by Vinnie Rose, and a friendly
neighbor brought in a few beautiful classic cars. Some residents even enjoyed a scenic ride
throughout the shady neighborhoods of Richfield in Al’s roomy 1936 Ford. In August,
there is much more to come. This month, we will be having a State Fair picnic, complete
with food, games, and entertainment to take place Thursday, August 27th. Reservations can
be made at the front desk, and all are welcome to attend as guests!
Throughout the month of July, we had several new faces join the group of residents at The
Pines. Our team is incredibly excited about the newcomers along with residents who have
lived here for a longer amount of time. Our hope for all residents is that they will feel a
sense of belonging and community after moving into The Pines—even if it does take some
time to adjust after a big move. Each new resident brings new hobbies, interests, and
personalities. Each of these individuals will also have the opportunity to meet current
residents and can begin new friendships. With all of the new faces, Assistant Director of
Housing, Jennifer Brown, has a lot of new residents and families to meet. Please give her a
warm welcome as she transitions back into her role! New residents are encouraged to try
out some of our enrichment programs, from Monday-Friday exercise classes, to crafts, to
musical entertainment.
Along with new resident faces, you will also come across a few new wonderful staff
members at The Pines. We have three new housekeepers, noted in the Maintenance article,
as well as a new activities assistant, Deanna. These individuals will be learning names and
faces of residents here, so please give them a warm welcome as well!
Thank you all for being a part of The Pines community. We look forward to seeing you this
August!

Resident Spotlight
Although Alice was born on a farm in North Dakota and John was a city fella,
raised in Minneapolis, their worlds eventually connected at a Twin Cities Lutheran Young Adult gathering. Their young adult lives unfolded with college,
careers, military and family.

PRESS
John was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and Alice graduated as LPN
from the Nursing School at St. Barnabus in Minneapolis. Alice went on to become a surgical nurse. At the conclusion of her career, Alice worked as a home
health nurse. John worked as a newsman for the Associated Press, the world’s
largest news gathering organization. His office was in Minneapolis and he
covered many regional stories. As a young reporter he spent weeks away from
home covering the Wounded Knee incident of 1973 in South Dakota.
John served our country in the U.S Air Force, ground forces in India and Burma.
Together John and Alice raised three children, and now have four grandchildren.
Although busy with careers and raising children they would take annual family
vacations to resorts on the north shore of Minnesota or travel out east to visit
family in Maryland.

Director of
Health Services
Happy August, everyone! As the summer continues, so does the heat. Heat and humidity
can affect everyone in different ways. Heat stoke is classified as a severe heat illness with a
body temperature greater than 105.1 degrees Fahrenheit. Common signs and symptoms
of heat stoke are disorientation and lack of sweating. In some cases seizures may occur.
There are many things we can do to prevent heat stoke from occurring, for example
blocking out direct sun and other heat sources, drinking plenty of fluids consistently and
not waiting before you feel “thirsty”, wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose fitting
clothes. When in your apartment, make sure to check your thermostat and set the temperature at an appropriate setting to prevent your apartment from getting too hot or turning on fans to promote air movement. Also another thing to think about is closing the
blinds and shades when the sun beats into your apartment to prevent the temperature
from rising. If you feel out of sorts or not yourself in this heat, please alert a staff member
so we can assess you.
Reminder to all, that we do have a Free weekly Blood Pressure clinic for those of you
who are a part of the Health and Wellness package. Here a nurse will take your blood
pressure for you and send you home with a Health Wellness journal with your blood
pressure readings to place in your wallet.
Maintenance Corner
We have three new housekeepers, Bridget,
Tamica, and Casey. Please help welcome them to
the building.

Please do not flush wipes down the toilet in apartments. This stops up your drain and potentially
those that are below your apartment as well.
It is also important to not throw any liquids down
the garbage chute. Pour the liquid in your sink, or
flush them down the toilet. Place non-recyclable
trash tied in a trash bag down the chute and the
recyclables in the blue recycle bins.
Thank you.
Director of Environmental Services, Joe Small.
