You may have noticed the Yellow Lake loop trail has 3 new stations replacing the existing wooden structures. The Yellow Lake loop trail is about 1.3 miles all around. It has beautiful scenery, is mostly shaded, with gravel paths that are perfect for jogging. Why not step up your regimen by incorporating some additional exercises to work muscle groups you may at times forget about? Each station has stepby-step directions on how to utilize the equipment to its best capacity. Sherriff’s Report 2 You can also enhance your workout with a smart phone, scan tags are available to get workout tips and videos of all the exercises. Autumn is almost upon us, bringing with it the start of school and the beginning of the Holiday season. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the annual distractions that make this time of year so rewarding. It’s also a great time to review a few safety tips to ensure our celebrations occur without incident. Look for Klahanie Neighborhood Patrol on Facebook! www.facebook.com/ KlahanieNeighborhoodPatrol Halloween – a time for costumes and jack-o-lanterns – is a highlight for many. In anticipation of this special evening, we would like to remind you of the importance of parental supervision. We strongly encourage you to know the trick-or-treating route of your child and to accompany them, if possible. Take a flashlight with you and remember drivers will likely have a difficult time seeing dark attire. Keep costumes away from open flames and remind children never to enter homes or cars of strangers. Finally, remember to inspect all treats before consumption, especially those homemade. The arrival of the Holidays often runs hand-in-hand with an increase of reported thefts. Happily, since this time last year, Klahanie crime statistics have greatly decreased. Burglaries and car prowls are at a near all-time low. And, incidentally, most of the incidents that have occurred are the result of cars left unlocked and garage doors left open. Put simply – crimes of opportunity. A few of our residents have expressed concern after hearing of a couple recent burglaries. However, the bulk of those incidents are occurring just beyond our borders. I would like to believe this is due to the fact that the criminal element is well aware of the Klahanie Neighborhood Patrol and our ever vigilant citizens. To that end, remember to check your garage door before going to bed. Take a moment to hit the lock button on your car’s key fob. Remove packages and newspapers from your doorstep, or have a neighbor do it if you are away. And report suspicious activity immediately, either by calling 9-1-1 or notifying the Neighborhood Patrol. Finally, with after-school activities ramping up, there’s often a tendency to speed onto the next important destination. The families of Klahanie enjoy a great many walking and hiking options in our area. Please remember that they are out in great numbers – even as the hours of light grow fewer – on and around the Boulevard. Have fun and stay safe! Klahanie Enjoyed The Goonies & Frozen on the Lawn at Klahanie Park The Klahanie community enjoyed two outdoor movies this year. In August we enjoyed The Goonies and had a great turnout, with everyone enjoying Hawaiian shaved ice, popcorn, and glow sticks. September saw our largest turnout with over 200 residents at Klahanie Park to view Frozen, which was an all ages favorite. We look forward to many more movies in the park! Klahanie has enjoyed a wonderfully sunny summer this year! Lakeside and Mountainview Pools saw over 21,000 guests in the summer months alone. We hope you all had a chance to lay out by the pool and soak up some of those rays. Our lifeguard staff would like to say thank you to those that came out and visited, whether it be for swim lessons, open swim, or our regular lap swimmers. The Klahanie Sharks had a great season and a record high for swimmers this year! As we move to our Fall/Winter schedule, please check the monthly calendars for Lakeside Pool at www.klahanie.com or pick up a copy at the Klahanie HOA Office or pool office. Mountainview Pool is closed for the season and will reopen Memorial Day Weekend in May of 2015. Friendly reminders as we move to weekday non-lifeguarded lap swim hours: Please familiarize yourself with all pool rules and policies and follow at all times The emergency phone is located next the male locker room entrance in a bright red box A shepherds crook and ring buoy are hanging on the wall adjacent to the shallow end of the pool Non-swimmers are not allowed during non-lifeguarded hours (weekday lap swim) for safety precautions. Lap Swim Etiquette: Please circle swim if there are more than one person in a lane. Circle swimming is continually swimming on the right side of the lane, both down and back, much like driving a car. Please pass in the center of the lane and wait at the end of the lane to allow others to pass. Photography services provided by long-time Klahanie resident Gabe Moore. 5 PAGE 6 Pool News Continued.. Group swim lessons are anticipated to start once Lakeside Pool’s dome has been installed, pending instructor availability. Want lessons now? We have a team of instructors that are available for private lessons. Contact the Aquatics Manager at [email protected] for more information or to schedule. KLAHANIE LIVING VOLUME 40, ISSUE 4 PAGE Lakeside Pool Dome Enhancement! The Lakeside Pool’s dome was installed October 11th, which allows residents to swim year round. Please excuse the construction going on, as this fall will see the completion of a new Air Heat Exchanger for the dome. This air heat exchanger will increase the inside air temperature in the dome. Results will be a warmer environment inside the dome, less condensation, clearer air during the colder months and less fog which increases visibility, and an overall better environment for swimmers. We are very excited about this product and hope the residents of Klahanie will enjoy it! Fall Restoration of Natural Areas, Partnership with Puget Sound Energy Continues, Yellow Lake blackberry removal, and native plants added Another Natural Areas Restoration Planned for October/November Natural Areas Association of Klahanie (NAAK) This is the fourth year of NAAKS’ continuing partnership with Puget Sound Energy (PSE). In that time four locations within Klahanie’s natural areas have been restored to their natural ecosystems at no cost to Klahanie. In October/November, a fifth site will be restored, again free of charge. Nonnative blackberries will be removed along the edge of the Yellow Lake NGPA buffer adjacent to Klahanie Park. Two hundred and sixty native plants, such as: Snowberry, Indian plum, Ocean spray, Red flowering currant and a variety of ferns will be added along with landscape fabric. PSE will maintain this area for three years including weeding, watering and plant replacement, as needed. Landscape fabric is used to discourage re-growth of non-native plants and will be removed at the end of three years. When this area is restored, these beautiful native plants will be visible to Park visitors and Klahanie boulevard traffic 7 PAGE 8 Santa Pictures & Toys for Tots Drive, Santa is Visiting Klahanie Santa will be back to visit Klahanie again this year! Santa will be taking pictures at the Summerwalk Clubhouse on Saturday December 6th from 12 – 3 pm. Last year’s event reached capacity and Santa has a limited time before he must make his way to visit other kids, so we encourage you to arrive early to ensure your time with him. New for this year: Klahanie will be providing a professional photographer to capture the event. Due to time constraints, residents taking their own pictures will not be allowed, so that everyone has the opportunity to meet Santa. Pictures will not be printed on site, however they will be available the following Monday online to download FREE OF CHARGE. There will also be the option to print family photos, holiday cards, calendars, and more. We would like to thank the Summerwalk community for hosting this year’s event. KLAHANIE LIVING VOLUME 40, ISSUE 4 PAGE 9 Volunteers Needed: Santa Pictures Klahanie is looking for enthusiastic and dedicated individuals who are interested in volunteering for fall community events! These long standing traditions are kept alive and made possible by our community partnerships. No commitment is too small! Santa Pictures will be taking place on Saturday, December 6th from 12 – 3 pm at Summerwalk Apartments. Klahanie is looking for a commitment from 11 am – 4 pm to set up, facilitate the events, and clean up. Volunteers are asked to dress for the occasion. Interested individuals please contact Hailey Zysk, Social Events Coordinator, at [email protected]. All hours earned can go towards community service requirements. Fall Yard Work The time of year has arrived when we need to get out and start working on our yards to get them ready for winter. Some of the work that you can consider is: Lawns can be fertilized and over seeded in areas that have damaged grass As the plants die off, the dead sections can be removed so the new growth in the spring can start off unimpeded by dead growth from the previous year Fallen leaves should be raked up or mulched into the lawn regularly as it is not good for the lawn to be covered with wet and rotting leaves all winter. Leaving the leaves all winter also gives your yard an untidy appearance. Remove plants from pots and planters as they die off Prune and shape the shrubs around your property so they are ready for the new spring growth Make sure that trees and shrubs are trimmed so that they do not lean on the house and give insects and rodents a pathway to your roof, attic, or siding Trim trees about 10 feet above the sidewalk so pedestrians can pass under them with no problems Clear sidewalks of leaves and debris as homeowners are responsible to keep the sidewalks in front of their homes clear, clean, and passable Keep the lawn moved during the winter if it needs it PAGE 10 Aloha!, Luau Pool Party in August Klahanie residents enjoyed a sunny afternoon of food, games, and pool fun at Mountainview Pool in August. The pool reached capacity within an hour as we had beautiful weather! Games included hula hoop, limbo, and cannon ball contests, duck and shell diving games for young and old kids alike, a festive piñata, and a best dressed competition that definitely did not disappoint. A huge thank you to the volunteers, lifeguard staff, and Klahanie Office staff that made this event possible! Photography services provided by long-time Klahanie resident Gabe Moore. KLAHANIE LIVING VOLUME 40, ISSUE 4 PAGE 11 Holiday Decorations for our Homes & Yards The time is almost here when there is an abundance of holidays and celebrations that are represented by decorations, both for our homes and yards. It is always fun to see how creative Klahanie is during these times, but alas they must be taken down and put away when the celebrating is over. In Klahanie, our Rules and Regulations state the following: 4.11. Holiday Decorations All holiday decorations, including outdoor holiday lights, shall be put up no more than 10 days before the holiday for which they are displayed and removed no later than 10 days after the holiday for which they are displayed. Holiday decorations and lights may be displayed continuously from the third weekend in November to the second weekend of January. Let’s all enjoy the spectacle of lights and decorations but also remember to remove them in a timely manger. Have a wonderful holiday season! Lakeside Pool Door Code Change Lakeside Pool door code will be changed on November 10th. The new door code is available online at www.klahanie.com, at the Lakeside Pool office by checking in with a lifeguard, or visit us at the Klahanie HOA Office. Photo ID will be required to check in to ensure only Klahanie homeowners are given the code. Please Welcome our New Aquatics Manager! We are sad to say goodbye to Kaila DeStefano. She has been a wonderful asset to the Klahanie Community over the past year. She and her husband are re-locating to Spokane for a job opportunity. Although she will be missed, we are excited to announce her replacement, Hailey Zysk. Hailey comes to us from the City of Spokane Aquatics Center. She has over 7 years of experience within the industry and her latest role was Pro- gram Supervisor for the City. We are excited to have her be a part of the team and look forward to new programs and events in the future.
