A fire alarm control panel is the core part of any fire detection system, monitoring
detection devices for alarm signals and activating the required sequence of events
to ensure safe evacuation, notification to emergency services or operation of fire
suppression equipment. Therefore it is important whichever system you select it
provides the functionality, flexibility and reliability to ensure optimum performance.
Kidde’s range of control panels are designed to meet the highest standards in fire
protection.
Conventional panels:
Intelligent Addressable control panels:
A simple and cost effective solution for small
area applications which require minimal cause
and effect, i.e. shops, clinics, schools etc.
Microprocessor based distributed intelligence
enables systems to be tailored to the exact
requirements of a wide range of system
configurations.
Conventional panels operate using zonal
principles where detection devices are
allocated to a dedicated circuit which will
cover a specific area identified as a detection
zone.
Intelligent addressable control panels operate
using detection loops distributed throughout
the protected building. Each loop device is
provided with a unique address enabling
accurate location of a fire.
Extinguishing control panels:
Based around a conventional control panel
it is provided with additional features and
functionality to control the safe operation of
fire suppression systems.

Vega is an open protocol control panel which is compatible with Apollo XP95/Discovery and
Hochiki ESP devices. The Vega panel is expandable from 1 to 16 loops in single loop increments.
An 8 line 40 Character LCD allows ease of on site programmability, with clear information relating
to fire and fault conditions.
Zonal LED indications for fire and fault support the information provided on the LCD, with the
panel available in 24, 56, 88 or 120 zone versions.
Vega incorporates many control features through the keys provided on the front membrane
– Silence Buzzer, Silence Alarms, Reset, Delay override, Evacuate and numeric keys 0-9.
Three password protected access levels restrict operation and programming of the system to
the relevant authorised personnel. A range of software features are provided to minimise the
possibility of false alarms including day mode, programmable time delays and investigation timers
which allow the user time to investigate the incident before a full alarm is raised.
Monitored sounder outputs and volt free relay outputs are provided on the control panel, the
number will vary depending on the number of loops.
Vega supports an extensive range of options including printer facility, repeater panels, plug-in
option cards and networking capabilities.

Where a fire system or site installation demands the use of more than
one Kidde Vega panel, a communication network link can provide the
tailor made engineering solution for most applications, from a simple two
panel system to a multi-panel networked site-wide installation.
Kidde offers two types of network to compliment its Vega range:
•
•
Common Zone Networking (CZN)
VegaNET
Note: xx would be replaced by the version number
VEGA COMMON ZONE NETWORKING
(CZN)
Common Zone Network (CZN) enables up to 32 Vega stand alone systems to be connected
together providing site wide fire alarm monitoring for small, medium and large sized
establishments or multi-building sites.
CZN supports the full range of Vega control panels providing a flexible approach to system design
that can address the many different alarm reporting, and evacuation strategies required for
buildings of today.
CZN integrated solution, provides the site fire team or designated personnel with instantaneous
location of fire alarm incidents saving valuable search and response time.
CZN concept is based upon a shared common zone principle, where the maximum number of
geographical fire compartment zones does not exceed 120. The system configuration can be
programmed to conform to two basic operating applications.

monitoring of fire alarm systems. VegaNET provides the user with a means to view the entire
system enabling rapid recognition, identification of source and extent of each event, particularly
during multiple alarm conditions. The presentation of alarm information is provided in a simple,
standard text or graphical format, giving operators the right information on which to make
appropriate decisions.
VegaNET Display System is designed specifically for connecting to the Kidde range of fire
detection panels providing full interrogation of sophisticated features. Powerful network cards
located within each fire control panel enable up to 32 remote panels to be supervised. This
provides the operator with an instantaneous overview of all systems with immediate access to
detailed information as required. Alternatively, using network outstations incorporated within the
system design, monitoring of third party equipment via discrete digital inputs can be achieved.
VegaNET Display System provides central control and monitoring for remote sector nodes using
full-duplex transfer of information, status and commands over a networked system.
The system allows each alarm device or input to be allocated a priority, which ensures that the
operator is presented with the most urgent high priority alarms, followed by those of lesser
importance. Monitoring of non fire related events such as plant, security, and process are also
catered for by the system.

SIRIUS II CONVENTIONAL FIRE
ALARM CONTROL PANEL
CONVENTIONAL
Fire Alarm Panels
Conventional Fire Alarm control panels provide cost effective fire
engineering solutions for small area applications which require
minimal cause and effect:
Shops, Clinics, Schools, Telecommunications
Conventional systems are wired as circuits or ‘zones’ with a zone
being an area of maximum 2000m2, panels are supplied with a
varying number of detection zones.
Detection devices connected to the detection zone circuits operate
on a simple two state basis, either ‘on’ or ‘off’ i.e. ‘Alarm’ or ‘No
alarm’. The conventional control panel monitors the state of these
devices, determines whether the device is in alarm and provides a
general alarm signal to operate visual and audible warning devices to
notify personnel within the building. The Kidde Sirius II conventional
fire alarm control panel has been designed with simplicity of
operation and attractive appearance in mind. Sirius II is compatible
with a wide range of detectors making it ideal for retro-installations.

HOLD SWITCH
ABORT SWITCH
The Hold Switch is a non-latching push button that can be connected to the monitored Hold
circuit on the extinguishing control panel. When the extinguishing system is in alarm and gas
release is imminent the Hold switch can be pressed to stop the extinguishing release sequence.
The release sequence will be delayed as long as the Hold switch remains pressed allowing all
personnel to evacuate before extinguishing gas is released into the area. When the Hold switch is
released the extinguishing sequence re-starts and the extinguishing gas will be
released into the risk area.
The Abort switch is a latching push button that can be connected to the monitored hold circuit
of the FireBeta XT, XT+ or ECU. When operated the switch will remain in the on position until
physically released. The Abort button allows the operator to prevent the release of extinguishing
gas in the event of accidental activation of the system.
The system can be reset before the Abort button is physically released.

Detection and Alarm devices can be separated into two main categories
“Intelligent” and “Conventional”.
Intelligent devices have unique addresses and are connected to control panels in
a loop configuration. Intelligent detectors give advanced warning of a developing
hazard and can pinpoint the individual device raising alarm. Intelligent audio/visual
devices can be independently programmed and controlled allowing for extensive
cause and effects such as phased evacuation.
The Kidde Discovery and XP95 ranges offer a
wide selection of intelligent detectors, manual
call points, interface modules and audio/visual
devices compatible with the Vega Analogue
Addressable control panel.
Conventional devices are connected to a
control panel as a zone in the case of detection
devices, or as a circuit in the case of audio/
visual devices. Conventional systems do not
have the capability of identifying individual

devices but only identify the zone or a circuit
as a whole therefore in an alarm condition the
search area for a conventional detection zone
can be large (up to 2000m2).
The Kidde Orbis and Series 65 range of
detectors are compatible with the Sirius II
conventional control panel and also the
FireBeta XT and XT+ range of extinguishing
control panels.

Detector
types
Ionisation Smoke Detectors detect smoke by using
a small ionising radiation source. Ionisation detectors
respond well to fast-burning (flaming) fires and are
widely used for property protection.
Heat Detectors are available in two types: fixed
temperature and rate-of-rise. Rate-of–rise detectors
monitor for rapid increases in the temperature within the
area, but also have a fixed temperature limit which will
trigger an alarm if the rate of temperature rise has been
too slow. Fixed temperature heat detectors are designed
to alarm at a set temperature value. Heat detectors are
more suitable in environments where conditions would
lead to false alarms with smoke detectors, e.g. kitchens,
boiler rooms etc. However a heat detector will respond
only when a fire is well established and generating high
heat output.
Optical Smoke Detectors detect smoke by using an
LED light source and photodiode. Optical detectors
respond particularly well to slow-burning, smouldering
fires and are widely used for life protection

Multisensor Detectors are a combined optical and
heat detector allowing flexibility in the detection of fires.
Using the combined detection method a fire condition
can be confirmed if both heat and smoke sensors
operate. Multisensor detectors are general purpose
detectors which respond well to a wide range of fires.
Beam Detectors consist of three main parts: The
transmitter, which projects a beam of infra-red light;
the receiver, which registers the light and produces an
electrical signal; and the interface, which processes
the signal and generates an alarm or fault. When a
fire develops, smoke particles obstruct the infra red
beam and once a preset threshold has been exceeded,
the detector will go into alarm. Beam detectors are
designed to protect large open spaces such as atria,
warehouses, museums, and churches.
Flame Detectors are designed to detect either
ultraviolet (UV) or infra red (IR) radiation emitted by a
fire. A number of different types of flame detectors from
UV, IR, UV/IR, dual, triple and multispectrum detectors
are available for various different applications . Flame
detectors are designed to protect areas where flaming
fires may be expected such as aircraft hangars, power
plants, oil refineries and paper manufacturing.
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detectors detect poisonous
carbon monoxide gas produced by combustion. The
detector contains an electromechanical cell which reacts
to the presence of CO in the air. The CO detector will
not detect smoke or any other products of combustion.
Carbon Monoxide detectors are particularly effective at
detecting deep-seated smouldering fires.

DETECTION AND ALARM – INTELLIGENT FIRE DETECTION
Intelligent Fire Detection
There are two types of intelligent detection system those with
‘distributed intelligence’ and those with ‘centralised intelligence’.
In systems with distributed intelligence the detectors incorporate
processors, which can determine whether the alarm levels of smoke
or heat exist and can initiate action accordingly.
Detectors in systems with centralised intelligence monitor the air
around them for smoke or heat and transmit the data to the control
panel on interrogation. The processor in the panel compares the
values with stored values and determines whether a pre-alarm or
alarm should be signalled.
The advantages of distributed intelligence are local adaptation to
environment and reduction of traffic on the supply and data wires.
The advantage of centralised intelligence is the ability to upgrade a
system very quickly and easily by upgrading the control panel.

DETECTION AND ALARM – INTERFACE MODULES
Interface Modules
Kidde supply a range of addressable interface modules which are
compatible with the Kidde Vega intelligent control panel. The
interfaces provide various types of input, output and combined input
and output units, which allow other equipment to be monitored and
controlled by the Intelligent Fire System through the detection loop.
Interface module range includes:
•
•
•
Standard interfaces with isolators
Mini interfaces
DIN-Rail interface
Standard Interfaces
with Isolators
Standard Interfaces with Isolators are fitted with bi-directional short-circuit
isolators so that they are unaffected by a single short circuit on either loop input
or output. However, the Input/Output Unit and Output Unit with isolator are
exceptions to this. The removal of loop power to these interfaces will cause a
‘set’ relay to ‘reset’.
Key features of Interfaces:
• Easy to install
• Well protected
• Modular design
• A neat solution

DETECTION AND ALARM – CONVENTIONAL FIRE DETECTION
Conventional Fire Detection
In conventional systems the detectors are wired as a circuit or zone.
They signal fire conditions to the control panel by changing from a
high to low impedance. The panel detects this impedance change by
current monitoring and identifies the zone where the alarm has been
raised.
Compatible with the Kidde Sirius II and FireBeta XT and XT+ range of
extinguishing control panels they are an ideal cost effective detection
system for small area applications.

The Orbis Heat Detector monitors temperature
by using a single thermistor network which
provides a voltage output proportional to
the external air temperature. There are seven
classes of heat detectors in the Orbis range
designed to suit a wide variety of operating

DETECTION AND ALARM – INTRINSICALLY SAFE DETECTORS
Intrinsically
Safe Detectors
XP95 IS
Intrinsically Safe Detectors
There are many places where an explosive mixture of air, gas or vapour is, or may
be present either continuously, intermittently or as a result of an accident. These are
defined as hazardous areas by BS EN 60079, the code of practice for installation and
maintenance of electrical apparatus in potentially explosive atmospheres.
XP95 Intrinsically Safe (IS) detectors are a development of the well established
intelligent XP95 range from Kidde. XP95 IS detectors feature all the benefits of the
standard range, but are developed specifically for use in hazardous areas.
The addresses of XP95 IS detectors are set by means of the patented XPERT card.
Hazardous areas are common in petroleum and chemical engineering plants and in
factories processing and storing gases, solvents, paints and other volatile substances.
Electrical equipment for use in these areas needs to be designed so that it cannot
ignite an explosive mixture, not only in normal operation but also in fault conditions.
There are a number of methods available to achieve this but one of the most
common is intrinsic safety.
Kidde offers both convential and intelligent smoke and heat detector ranges
designed to be intrinsically safe, as they meet the requirements of the ATEX directive.

Kidde High Sensitivity Smoke Detection systems (HSSD) are Aspirating Smoke
Detection systems (ASD) designed to give very early indication of an incipient fire
condition. This pre-emptive warning – before the transition into the flaming and
heat stages – provides the time necessary to take corrective action and avoid the
danger, damage and disruption to operations that a fire can cause. The Kidde
HSSD equipment is simple to install, commission, operate and service. They have
the highest levels of performance and reliability.
PAGE 83/120
Protecting assets worldwide
Protecting your investment
Developed in 1988, Kidde HSSD was the
world’s first laser-based detector. They are
in use worldwide, protecting valuable assets
for institutions and companies as diverse as
Windsor Castle, London Underground, BP
and HSBC bank.
There are major benefits from a very early
indication of incipient fire. The incident can be
dealt with through local corrective measures
such as powering down equipment or the use
of hand extinguishers, avoiding unnecessary
evacuation or suppressant release. Kidde HSSD
systems can also be integrated into the main
fire protection system, providing the first stage
alert in an alarm organisation, with subsequent
stages of alarm being set for suppressant
release or evacuation.

ASPIRATING SMOKE DETECTION
Stages of fire
Most fires start with some form of overheating. In
this incipient stage, fine particles are released as the
combustion process begins. The particles released at
the incipient stage of a fire may not be detected by point
type smoke or heat detectors. In fact smouldering can
continue for minutes, hours or even days before being
detected by point type detectors. The incipient stage
of smouldering fires provides the widest window of
opportunity to detect and control the spread of fire.
How
High Sensitivity
Smoke Detection
works
8686/120
PAGE
The HSSD unit will go through various alarm thresholds
in these early stages, long before point type smoke
detectors will respond to the fire. Point type smoke
detectors are designed to detect smoke at a level which

allows sufficient time for occupants to evacuate the
area or building, although possibly not enough time
to prevent damage to equipment. At this level there
may also be an increased risk to anyone attempting to
extinguish the fire.
HSSD units can be programmed to be up to 1000
times more sensitive than point type smoke detectors.
Alarm levels can be set as high as 0.0025% obscuration
per metre for clean areas and lower sensitivity for less
controlled environments. This increased sensitivity allows
the HSSD unit to detect and report an incident at the
earliest possible stage, providing the time needed to help
minimise or prevent fire damage.

Aspirating detection
The HSSD detector is mounted either inside or outside
the area. It draws air from the protected area using an
aspirating fan which is housed in the detection unit. The
pipe network contains sampling holes at predetermined
locations through which the air is drawn.
HSSD detectors can protect areas up to 2000 square
metres to BS5839, or between 500 to 750 square metres
to BS6266, in high air flow conditions. The pipework is
configured in various ways according to the application.
Typically it will comprise of a pipe network with sampling
points at intervals similar to point detection. It can also,
for example, be arranged to monitor across air handling
units or in ducts.

Senator High Sensitivity Smoke Detection embodies innovative
features which depart from the accepted techniques for
detectors operating at high sensitivity.
SENATOR
High Sensitivity
Smoke Detection
An extensive range of detection units and accessories make the
Senator HSSD system one of the most flexible on the market.
The most important feature of the Senator range of detectors
is the patented ‘artificial intelligence’ known as ClassiFire-3D.

Classifire-3D
Classifire-3D is a process which controls all aspects of the
system, ensuring the maximum safe sensitivity regardless of
ambient conditions.
During an initial Fastlearn process, the detector samples the
environment once each second and produces a histogram
representing the ambient pollution level. The histogram fits
a standard deviation curve, allowing statistical analysis of the
data. Any normal curve can be divided into 3 equal width
strips called a standard deviation with a known probability of
a random event falling into each category. Classifire-3D uses
this information to automatically set the correct sensitivity and
alarm thresholds, determined by an acceptable frequency of
false alarms.
Features
• Wide range of detector types
• High sensitivity provided by laser based forward light scatter
for reliable early warning
• Unique Classifire-3D perceptive artificial intelligence system
• Laser Dust Discrimination (LDD) with a patented dust
management and separator system
• RS485 communications built into detector as standard for
networking and remote communications
• Addressable Protocol Interface card APICTM for connecting
detector to Apollo protocol control panels
• SenseNET network of 127 detectors
• Command module available for central monitoring
and display
After 24 hours ClassiFire-3D has sufficient data to set the alarm
position at its best safe sensitivity. ClassiFire-3D continues to
update the histogram for the entire lifetime of the detector.

configuration options.
HART XL with optional display module and power supply
9898/120
PAGE
Individual particle counting
HART HSSD operates on a laser-based particle counting
principle. The smoke particles pass through a focussed laser
beam with scattered light from individual particles being picked
up by a photodiode sensor and converted to an electrical pulse.
The pulse rate is electronically counted and measured against
alert and alarm thresholds. Information regarding smoke levels
and alarm thresholds can be presented on a Hart XL LCD.
Alarm and fault signals can easily be transmitted to a Fire
Alarm control panel or BMS through volt free relays. Since the
sensing process takes place in the beam in the centre of the
sampling chamber, the detection performance is unaffected by
any build up of particulate on the walls of the chamber over
time. For this reason air filtering is unnecessary, which is an
important maintenance benefit.

Kidde Linear Heat Detection (LHD) Systems are cable based systems that
provide economical temperature monitoring at the precise point of risk.
The system is reliable, flexible and has the ability to detect abnormal
temperature variances before it develops into a fire situation. Kidde Fire
Protection’s comprehensive LHD portfolio allows a vast range of both
commercial and industrial fire and overheat risks to be protected, in
ambient temperatures of – 40°C to + 200°C. Alarmline sensor cables may
be installed within hazardous environments using approved I.S. barriers for
simple apparatus. All Alarmline cables supplied in increments of 100m up
to 1000m.

Cable Tunnels
Floating Roof Tanks
Conveyors
High power cable installations at power stations, airport
terminals, railway stations and any installations requiring
substantial power requirements can be protected by
Alarmline sensor cables. Alarmline cable is suitable for
use in harsh environments.
The petrochemical industry requires that tank fires
caused by the ignition of combustible gases are
extinguished in a short time frame. A rim seal Alarmline
detection system provides a fast extinguishant response.
Overheating bearings on conveyor support rollers can
be a common cause of conveyor belt fires. Alarmline
systems can detect these overheat conditions. Additional
protection can be provided above and below the conveyor
belt against spillage and the transportation of ignited material.
Bulk Storage
Car Parks
Escalators
Alarmline “In rack“ protection at multiple levels ensures
rapid fire detection. As part of a pre action sprinkler
system, an advance warning of imminent sprinkler
operation may avoid unnecessary water damage to
stored goods.
The combustible materials used in the manufacture of
modern passenger vehicles results in fires that burn
more intensely and generate higher temperatures than
ever before. That’s why early detection of fire conditions
is essential in enclosed over and underground car
parks. Alarmline installed at the ceiling achieves this
by detecting significant rises in temperature not just at
localised “hot spots” but over the entire length of cable.
Alarmline system provides for the total protection of
escalators with coverage provided at all potential fire
risk areas i.e. drive motors , return roller bearings dust
collection trays and truss rollers. Alarmline can be
used to give fire alarm indication and also to initiate a
sprinkler system.

Analogue
Alarmline Analogue cable senses temperature variations
by continuously monitoring the resistance of the specially
doped Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) polymeric
insulation. A change in temperature produces a relative
change in resistance which is monitored by a dedicated
Alarmline controller.
Suitable for Hazardous Area applications when used with
approved Zener Barriers.
This unit is used to monitor alarmline analogue cable and actuate an alarm signal at a pre
determined level. The integrating effect of Alarmline sensor cable enables it to detect either a hot
spot or a lower level of temperature increase along its total length.

ALARMLINE ANALOGUE
CABLE (FM APPROVED)
The LWM1 controller monitors alarmline analogue sensor cable combining both fixed temperature
(Max–alarm) and rate of rise temperature (Diff-alarm) detection.
Recommended for environments ranging from clean and dry to moderate dust and moisture.
Not for external use or for installations where corrosive agents or damage to cable may occur.
The control unit reports temperature differences by the permanent supervision of the resistance
of the sensor cable. The Max – alarm is triggered if the adjustable static alarm temperature of
the sensor cable is reached or exceeded. The rate of rise alarm (Dif-alarm) is triggered by the
adjustable integration of time and temperature change.

Alarmline Digital is a twin conductor switching cable with
temperature sensitive insulation, protected by a special
braid, PVC or high temperature, chemical resistant polymer
outer sheath to meet specific application requirements.
Alarmline Digital cable operates by melting of the internal
insulation between the conductors, at a predetermined
temperature. This results in a short circuit which provides a
fire alarm signal. Fire and fault conditions are provided by
continuously monitoring for a short circuit (Fire) or open
circuit (Fault) state by the fire alarm panel.
