Agape honours seniors on computers and caregivers
Chomedey group holds recognition evening at Château Royal
MARTIN C. BARRY
Chomedey’s Agape Association held a special
recognition evening at the Château Royal on
March 22 during which caregivers who took
part in knowledge-building workshops over
the past year were honored. Seniors who
completed a computer training workshop were
also rewarded with certificates of recognition.
Learning to be a caregiver
“Because of the great success of our project
with the caregivers of seniors, we are rewarding them for the excellent work that they’ve
done with their families,” said Agape’s Betty
McLeod. “We’re also honouring the seniors who
got involved in our computer classes, which are
offered free of charge every year.”
The caregivers followed Agape’s series of
workshops, sponsored by ‘l’Appui pour les
Proches Aidants d’Ainés de Laval,’ and given
by knowledgeable guest speakers over the past
year. Topics ranged from nutrition, community resources in Laval and available to them,
warning signs of caregiver stress and burnout,
prescription medication, technical aids in the
home as well as legal planning concerning
caregivers most.
Participation rewarded

Certificates were handed out to all partici-
pants who were present, as well as to the guest
speakers in recognition of their participation
informing and guiding the caregivers during
the workshops. According to statistics based on
2006 census data, 298,645 caregivers (15 years
and older) are believed to reside in Laval who
provide a varying number of hours of support
to their aging loved ones. Of these caregivers,
some 50,495 are 65 years of age and older and
60 per cent of these are women.
The other seniors honoured were participants
in the ‘Seniors Leading the Way’ project. Agape
provided computer courses to seniors 55 years
and older. Participants learned the basic use of
computers with the Windows operating system
as well as the basics of navigating the internet
and using e-mail.
During the evening, Agape
also paid homage to one of
its most loyal volunteers:
Wilma Gumpert.
Expanding seniors’ horizons
The purpose of the project, according to
Agape, was to teach seniors how to tap into
resources useful to seniors on the Internet, with
particular emphasis on elder abuse prevention.
Those who excelled the most in their learning
are now expected to share their knowledge by
teaching other seniors what they learned
through Agape’s course. A parallel benefit of
the course was that it provided the seniors with
stimulation in the form of learning, which may
be beneficial in curbing cognitive loss which
can occur with advancing age.
Participants who completed Agape’s ‘Seniors Leading
the Way’ computer training
courses are seen here with
Agape staff social worker Ian
Williams.

Finance Minister outlines spending to Newsfirst Multimedia
MARTIN C. BARRY
In a conference call from Ottawa with
journalists from media all over Canada last
week, federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau
told Newsfirst Multimedia that the Liberal
government’s 2016 budget proposes to reduce
immigration processing times to prioritize
family reunification, while increasing funding
for settlement programs to better welcome
newcomers.
Reducing poverty
Morneau also said the federal government
is “committed to strengthening Canada’s place
in the world by ensuring that Canada’s international assistance priorities are focused on
poverty reduction and by promoting peace and
security.”
‘We are committed
to getting permanent
housing for the
Syrian refugees who’ve
come to Canada’
This year, according to Morneau, the government intends to admit 300,000 new permanent
residents — the highest number since more
than a hundred years ago when people were
fleeing hardships and conflicts leading up to
the First World War. Morneau said budget
2016 proposes to reduce processing times and
make family reunification a priority in Canada’s
immigration system.
Resettling Syrian refugees
He said the government intends to resettle an
additional 10,000 government-assisted Syrian
refugees in 2016, and reduce immigration
processing times to help reunite families faster.
In a statement issued by Morneau’s ministry,
they say “Canadians have been deeply affected
by the refugee crisis in Syria and the surrounding region and have expressed the desire to
help.”
In November 2015, the Government commit-
ted $678 million over six years, starting in
2015–2016, to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees
by February 29, 2016, and by committing to
resettle an additional 10,000 government-assisted Syrian refugees over the course of 2016.
Budget 2016 provides $245 million more
over five years for the identification, overseas
processing, transportation and resettlement of
the additional 10,000 Syrian refugees.
“We are committed to getting permanent
housing for the Syrian refugees who’ve come to
Canada,” Morneau told Newsfirst Multimedia
regarding some of the ways that the above sums
will be spent, while adding that Immigration
Minister John McCallum had previously stated
that he believes permanent housing can be
found by June for the 25,000 Syrian refugees
who arrived in Canada by the end of February.
Resettlement procedures
“That is certainly our target in that regard,”
Morneau continued. “I think you can imagine
that the processing initiatives for the next group
of immigrants coming is similar in the sense
that we need to interview people, do health
reviews and we need to ensure that we resettle
people in a way that allows them to start their
lives in Canada.”
According to Morneau, the 2016 budget
offers immediate help to those who need it
most and lays the groundwork for long-term
economic growth. As of Jan. 1, he added, the
Liberal government’s new middle-class tax
cut will affect roughly 9 million Canadians
who can expect to receive a bigger paycheque
as a result.
Another measure in budget 2016, the government’s new Canada Child Benefit, is being
promoted by the Liberals as “a simpler, tax-free,
more generous, targeted benefit that helps those
who need it most: the middle class.” They say
that starting in July, nine out of ten families will
receive more money than they did under the
previous government.

the future.” This includes new investments in
infrastructure that total more than $120 billion
over the next decade. As an immediate first
step, the government will invest $11.9 billion
in modern and reliable public transit, water and
wastewater systems, affordable housing, and in
retrofits and repairs to protect existing projects
from the effects of climate change.
boot camp
“Our plan will recapture the hope and optimism for the future that existed in previous
generations, and put it to work for the next,”
the Finance Minister added. “Real change is not
just about today or tomorrow. It is about revitalizing the economy in the years and decades to
come, so that it works for the middle class and
helps those working hard to join it.”

Jean Lapierre, Quebec political commentator, dead at 59
Lapierre’s opinion on Quebec politics heard
daily by thousands
Lapierre was born in Bassin, Que., in 1956.
He was first elected to the House of Commons in
1979, the same year he graduated from the
University of Ottawa law school. As politician and pundit, Jean Lapierre stood
at the centre of Quebec politics for more than
a generation.
He died Tuesday in a plane crash as he
made his way to his father’s funeral in the
Îles-de-la-Madeleine
Lapierre, 59, had a near ubiquitous presence
in Quebec media in recent years. He was a go-to
political commentator on radio and television in
both official languages.
On any given day, his opinions and reporting
about federal and provincial politics were heard
by hundreds of thousands of Quebecers.
Lapierre and the rat-pack But before joining the fourth estate, Lapierre
was known as a masterful if chameleon-like political operative.
He spent the first decade of his elected career
as a Liberal MP for Shefford, Que., serving as the
deputy House leader in 1984.
In Opposition, he developed a reputation for
his acerbic questions and was part of the so-called
“rat pack,” a group of young hotshot Liberal MPs
that included Sheila Copps, Brian Tobin and
Don Boudria.
“We were part of a group that was trying
to save the party after the big 1984 defeat,”
Copps said Tuesday, after learning of Lapierre’s
death. “We worked together every day.”
But when the Meech Lake accord was
torpedoed, with the help of several prominent
Liberals, he questioned the direction of his party.
The rise of Donald Trump and the resurgence of the right

The Laval News • April 2, 2016
Should anyone be alarmed that Donald
Trump – currently leading the field to be the
Republican Party nominee – stands a good
chance of going on to become President of
the United States? Probably, considering that
Trump’s election to office would mark the first
time a demagogue of such proportions would
lead the world’s most powerful nation.
The increasing right-wingism developing
in the U.S. mirrors a corresponding mood in
central and eastern Europe, where a continuing
influx of migrants fleeing the Middle East is
causing even the most liberal-conservative of
European nations, such as Germany, to lose
patience while trying to keep in step with the
public mood – lest they lose control to rightwing leaders.
As Chicago Tribune political writer Steve
Chapman stated in a recent column, American
political activists who have had the nerve to
merely hold up signs in silent protest at Trump
rallies have had them ripped away. Protesters
have also been pushed, kicked, punched and
spit on, Chapman noted. “If you see somebody
getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the
crap out of them,” Trump told supporters at
one rally.
“This is a man who, in his rallies, has told his
supporters to basically beat up the people in
the crowd and he’ll pay their legal fees, someone who has encouraged people in the audience to rough up anyone who stands up and
says something he doesn’t like,” Republican
nomination rival Marco Rubio has stated

about Trump.
“Louder were the cheers when Trump roared
‘Get ‘em outta here!’ to summon his security
team after protests erupted,” David Von Drehle
wrote in a March 14 Time Magazine profile
describing a Trump campaign event. “The
crowd had seemed quite mild just before, and
just after, these Orwellian minutes of hate.
But the delight in the clash, and the frisson of
implied violence, was unmistakable.”
Trump has also made abundantly clear
his loathing of the media, as well as his
contempt for the U.S. constitution’s first
amendment guaranteeing press freedom. It’s
notable that during almost every speech, he
routinely spends several minutes pointing
at the press and working the crowd into a
frenzy as he derides the journalists. Trump
has also proposed to curtail freedom of the
press as defined by the U.S. Supreme Court,
by changing libel laws to make it easier for
public figures to win lawsuits.
Trump habitually accuses the media of
untruthfulness: “The most dishonest people
in the world,” he has called the press. For
example, he recently said The New York Times
was lying after it reported that he proposed
a 45 percent tariff on Chinese imports. This
despite the fact Trump made the statement
during an interview with the Times editorial
board, during which an audio recording was
made and stands as proof of his statements.
This is all apart from Trump’s pre-campaign pledges. They include building a wall

between the U.S. and Mexico (and then billing
it to the Mexican government), refusing entry
into the U.S. to Muslims, and adopting new
and radically protectionist U.S. foreign trade
policies that would probably precipitate trade
wars after brushing aside international trade
agreements such as NAFTA and the more
recent Trans-Pacific Partnership.
In the meantime, Trump has stated that he
admires Russian President Vladimir Putin. This
ought not be surprising, taking into account
that fundamentally they are both oligarchs who
believe that raw individual strength should
determine who’s fit to lead a nation, rather than
democratic principles. If Trump should go on
to win not just the Republican nomination but
also the presidency, the world could well find
itself looking at a new and ascending political
order defined increasingly by oligarchs.
With all that’s negative about the man, on
a more positive note Trump may actually not
be as bad as he initially seems. One has to
take into account that he is a native of New
York City and that New Yorkers typically have
a very rough and rude exterior. But they’re
also known for being big hearted under the
right circumstances and for getting things
together with major acts of generosity when
the need calls for it. So here’s to hoping that
Donald Trump falls into this latter category
and that if he becomes President of the U.S. a
more humane side to him will emerge and he
becomes more of a statesman.

At the 1990 Liberal convention,
Lapierre campaigned against Meech Lake opponent Jean Chrétien, openly calling him a «sell-out.»
Later, Lapierre would stun his Liberal
colleagues when he joined Lucien Bouchard
and dozens of other disaffected Progressive
Conservative and Liberal MPs to form the Bloc
Québecois.
That bold move helped launch a sea-change
in federal politics, as the Bloc would spend the
better part of the next 20 years as the dominant
Quebec party.
He stepped away from politics in 1992, becoming a media commentator.
Return to the Liberals
But Lapierre changed his colours again, back
to Liberal red, to help rescue the party amid the
sponsorship scandal.
P
aul Martin turned to Lapierre’s Rolodex and
charismatic personality ahead of the 2004 election, making him his Quebec lieutenant.
“I never saw myself as a separatist,” Lapierre
said at the time. “I saw myself as somebody who
wanted to bring about a level playing field for
Quebec.”
In spite of the sponsorship scandal, Lapierre
helped the Liberals win enough seats in Quebec
to salvage a minority government for Martin. He
was rewarded by being named transport minister.
Even Lapierre, though, could do little to stem
the desire for a change prompted by the revelations at the sponsorship scandal inquiry led by
Justice John Gomery.
He was one of the few Liberal MPs who kept
their seat after the Grits were turfed from power
in 2006.
But he resigned from politics shortly thereafter,
joining the French-language TVA network to
co-host a popular political program with Paul
Larocque.
“Paul Martin became prime minister and then
got hit by a big truck called Gomery,” Lapierre
said while announcing his retirement. “After that, it was very difficult. People didn’t
trust any more politicians in general and Liberals
in particular. In those murky waters, it was difficult for anyone to swim and stay afloat.”
‘Someone who loved politics’
“I think he’ll be remembered as a person who
absolutely loved politics, who loved communicating it,” said Bernard St-Laurent, who spent
years covering Lapierre as CBC›s chief political
correspondent for Quebec. “There are a lot of people who can be quite
cynical of politics.… but Jean was one of the
people who saw that politics was more than
that and because of his passion for it, was able
to communicate it.”

Our freshwater in Canada
If 1/5 of the world’s freshwater reserves are
in our Canada and that Canadian believe and
understand that water sustains life, human
life, ecosystem’s life, why is freshwater not
protected.
Why are we dumping so much chemicals
into it, why are companies allowed to dump
cancerigenous substances, why are filtration
plants not filtering all the medication entering
our sewer systems, and why do we let the fish
we eat swim in chemicals, medication residues,
and sewage in general. We should not let foreign
investors, or foreign companies get control over
our Canadian freshwater system. We can be
bought so easily that I’m ashamed of the lack of
entrepreneurship of Canadians when it comes
to our natural resources.

(TLN) The Société de Transport
de Laval (STL) says it is pleased with measures contained in the Infrastructure and
Investment Plan announced last week by
Federal Minister of Finance Bill Morneau.
“The investments announced in the budget
are a significant step forward to ensuring the
long-term financial planning of public transit,”
the STL said in a statement. The STL said
it wished to highlight some of the priority
projects taking place in its area of service.
De Cotis, president of the STL’s board of directors and vice-president of the City of Laval’s
executive committee.
He said that as a part of the $924
million dedicated to Quebec over a threeyear period, the STL plans to consolidate the
financing required to acquire new buses, build
new storage and maintenance infrastructures
for vehicles and pursue the development of
preferential bus measures (PBM).
Sustainability ensured
In addition, the STL believes that the second
phase of the Infrastructure Plan’s $48 billion
investment, which will be rolled out as of 2018,
represents a major opportunity for Laval and,
more globally, for the Montreal Metropolitan
Community, to implement a long term vision
for the development of the Metro system and
the finalization of the blue line.
“The creation of the Public Transit
Infrastructure Fund is a step
forward to ensuring the
short term sustainability of the equipment and
services that we already
have in place,” said David

Last year, the Quebec government decided to
overhaul Quebec’s education system by scrapping school board elections, and putting the
management and control of schools, basically,
into the hands of those closest to the students :
parents, teachers , principals and support staff.
The rules and regulations of this modernization and democratization of the public school
system were put into a draft bill last December.
Naturally, Bill 88 was not appreciated by
those who will be out of a job, namely, school
commissioners , school board chairpersons and
heads of provincial associations. Once the law
is passed, they have 15 days to leave. Salaries
and all other benefits cease. All savings will be
diverted to schools.
On the English side, the association is the
Quebec English School Boards Association
(QESBA), whose president is Jennifer
Maccarone, who is also chairperson of the Sir
Wilfrid Laurier School Board.
Suanne Stein Day is the vice-president and
chairperson of the Lester B. Pearson School
Board (LBPSB) .
The Executive Director of the QESBA is
Marcus Tabachnick , former president of the
QESBA and former chairman of the LBPSB was
also president of the Canadian School Boards
Association.
It is important to note that the QESBA has
hired a lobby group to lobby the government
to scrap Bill 86. Moreover , you may recall the
Association hired former MP Marlene Jennings
to head a study on school board elections,
which, of course came to the conclusion to
maintain the status quo.
At any rate , the bill is undergoing a consultation, and hearings are presently taking place,
in the National Assembly with a committee
studying the Bill.
The QESBA , which has the loudest voice,
and the most to lose financially, has recruited
school boards and other groups to speak on
its behalf.
Last week, the Quebec Community Groups
Network (QCGN) spoke. This network is the
umbrella organization of 48 English-speaking

It’s time for the federal government to implement the right to clean water in Canada by

respects, protects and fulfils our right to a

Laval and Emploi Quebec
renew support for SelfEmployment Program
The Quebec government through its agency
Emploi Quebec helps unemployed persons
who would like to start a business or become
self-employed by creating their own jobs. The
aide in the form of technical and financial
assistance is managed by the regional economic
development organizations. To be eligible for
support under the Self-Employment Program
(SEP) the applicant can be an employment
insurance recipient, a person receiving benefits under a last-resort financial assistance
program, a person not receiving government
income support or anyone who has precarious
employment.
There are conditions that determine ones
eligibility for aide. The project presented must
be economically viable and the assistance
provided must not result in the project creating
unfair competition to similar, already-established businesses. Applicants must fit the
entrepreneur profile and demonstrate experience or skills related to the project. Applicants
must have been discharged with respect to any
bankruptcy and not be involved in a lawsuit or
any other legal dispute. Aspiring entrepreneurs
must contribute financially to the project,
at least 15% of the total financial assistance
provided either as money, tools, premises and
equipment. Candidates must be available to
work at least 35 hours a week.
With the creation of its economic bureau of
development the Laval executive committee
has already confirmed receiving approval for
the transfer the 2015-2016 SEP budget for 60
projects from the centre for economic development (CDL). An application for another 60
posts in the program for 2016-2107 has
also met with approval with the following

stipulations.
While agents of the local employment
centres are responsible to evaluate if a candidate qualifies for the SEP, Emploi Quebec
remains the administrator of the weekly
monetary benefits paid out to recipients. The
determination of the viability of the proposed
projects will be managed by the regions local
economic development centre upon receipt
of a summarized version of a business plan.
If accepted technical support to develop the
business plan is offered for up to 8 to 12 weeks.
Financial assistance is provided for a maximum
of 52 weeks. After that period, mentoring will
remain available up to one additional year. The
city of Laval’s economic development office will
be reimbursed an amount of $1841 for each
of the 60 posts that will be subsidized under
the SEP for the period of April 1st 2016 to

Lawyer Paul Wayland of the legal firm

matter. The indemnity offered to the lot owners
in question is 100% of the city evaluation of
these lots as registered on the 2016-2018
evaluation roles.
To underscore the urgency of the repairs
on March 27th the small bridge was closed
to traffic in Laval after a water main break on
Sunday. Vehicles were not allowed to cross the
Île Bigras Bridge after officials were informed
about a sinkhole at the mouth of the bridge
in the afternoon. Residents in Île Bigras, Île
Parizeau and Île Verte also had their water
cut off and had a boil-water advisory. Laval
authorities are evaluating the integrity of the
structure which is scheduled for definitive
repair in the spring of next year.

The evaluation service of the city of Laval
was mandated to initiate the procurement of
land next to the Iles Bigras Bridge and permanent and temporary servitudes required to
facilitate the planned repair work of the bridge.
The engineering department has proposed a
spring 2017 execution date for the project. In
the case that the sale of land and servitudes
could not be agreed upon via negotiation the
evaluation service was instructed to prepare
expropriation procedures to ensure a timely
resolution of the dossier.
The total budget before taxes for the
purchases and servitudes is $566,727. The

Grant for L’Aviron community housing
A $ 50,000 grant will be awarded to the organization L’Aviron. This organization provides
emergency and temporary community and
supportive housing. Its objective is to prevent
homelessness and social exclusion of persons
experiencing residential instability, economic
and social difficulties.
This funding will allow L’Aviron to assume
responsibility for part of the clientele currently
served by the Social Emergency Division of the
Laval Police Service. “This organization does
vital work in our community. We are proud to
support them and we are especially grateful for
the services it renders to Laval, “said the mayor.
The mission of the corporation is to offer
adults in a social emergency situation temporary or medium term shelter to reduce the risk
of declining economic status and health. Also
accompaniment service is offered people in
connection with other community programs
and partners. The area served is the Pont-Viau
district, around Boulevard des Laurentides
between the Concorde and Saint-Martin
Boulevards. It is in the heart of one of the
poorest neighborhoods of Laval.
Publication of a tender for
LEED professional services
The Executive Committee authorized the
call for tenders SP-28871 to procure the services of a LEED Accredited Professional for the
project to build a community center / sports
chalet at Lausanne Park.
The professional services required include
the preparation of environmental based
studies, developing architectural plans and
construction specifications for the eventual
call for bids for the construction phase of the
project. Green building/construction refers
to both a structure and the processes that are
environmentally responsible and resource-efficient. Green concepts present throughout a
building’s life-cycle from design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation, and
demolition.
A professional who holds LEEDS credentials
is an active participant in the green building movement. It is an attestation that the
professional is in possession of appropriate
knowledge, experience and credibility in the
development of green building projects.
A Study of pedestrian traffic in
Laval
The Executive Committee authorized a
public call for tenders for professional services
including consulting engineering for the
purpose of studying pedestrian traffic tendencies in Laval. As part of its strategic vision for
development in the next twenty years 20152035, the City of Laval determined that the
health and quality of a community is linked to
effective and active personal mobility. “Active
Mobility is one of our priorities. This study
will allow us to better know and better understand the movement of pedestrians on our
territory. We will then be able to promote
development that will also ensure universal
accessibility, “argued the mayor of Laval, Marc

MARTIN C. BARRY
Should any of Marc-Aurèle-Fortin MP Yves
Robillard’s more than 96,000 constituents ever
find themselves out looking for his riding office,
they shouldn’t have too much difficulty: it’s on
Dagenais Blvd. just a little to the east of Curé
Labelle.
Prominently advertised
But the truth is they might even find the
building difficult to miss – it’s the one with
Yves Robillard’s name spelled in large letters
right across the front with a large Canadian flag.
Robillard and his staff held a reception for
the official opening of the Marc-Aurèle-Fortin
riding office on March 18.
The late afternoon event was well-attended.
Among the guests were several of Robillard’s
Liberal caucus colleagues, including Laval-Les
Îles MP Fayçal El-Khoury, as well as a few Laval
city councillors, including Michel Trottier from
Fabreville.
Moved in since January
While Robillard and his crew have occupied
the premises since January, according to his
local chief of staff, Geoffroy Desautels, they
waited to be settled in and for the hardships of
the winter to be mostly over before holding a
major gathering and having in a large number
of guests.
“From what I can see, we’ll easily be welcoming more than 500 people here today,” he told
the Laval News. Regarding the prominence of
the MP’s name outside, Robillard said: “There’s
no doubt we’re making our name known,” he
said.
“And with the Canadian flag people won’t
be making any mistakes about who we are,”
Robillard continued. “In Ottawa all the buildings have Canadian flags flying from them.
Same thing here: helps people to see where
they can find us.”
A great choice, says Robillard
Robillard said that he and his staffers are very
happy with the location of the constituency
office “because we’re in the middle of the riding.
That’s very important to have an office that’s
centrally located. Geoffroy and myself and the
president of the riding association worked very
hard to find this location which in the end was
exactly within the price range we had in mind
and our budget.”
Marc-Aurèle-Fortin takes in an area that
stretches northward beyond the City of Laval. In
addition to the Laval districts of Auteuil, SainteRose and parts of Fabreville and Vimont, MarcAurèle-Fortin also includes the city of SainteThérèse, the towns of Lorraine and Rosemère
and the municipality of Bois-des-Filion across
the Rivière-des-Mille-Îles on the North
Shore. Marc-Aurèle-Fortin’s neighbouring
federal ridings are Vimy, Rivière-des-MilleÎles, Argenteuil-Papineau-Mirabel, TerrebonneBlainville and Alfred-Pellan.
Ridings named for artists
The riding of Marc-Aurèle-Fortin, along
with Alfred-Pellan, are two in the Laval region
named after notable French Canadian artists
who remain closely associated with the area.
Marc-Aurèle Fortin was born in 1888 in what
was then the rural village of Ste-Rose in Laval.
He died in 1970 in Quebec’s northwestern
Abitibi region. Although Alfred Pellan wasn’t
born in Laval, he lived from 1950 onwards in
Auteuil. Following his death in 1988, Alfred
Pellan was buried at the Parc du Souvenir on
avenue des Perron in Auteuil (known today as
the Cimetière jardin et complexe funéraire
Laval).
(TLN) On March 21, Fabre Liberal MNA
Monique Sauvé announced the start of an
extra-territorial consultation group for local
agricultural producers as she previously
promised.
Sauvé’s riding office, allowed rewarding exchanges and discussions to take place. It also allowed
the first steps to be taken towards eventually
finding solutions.
Promoting local
Also during the meeting, Sauvé repeated
that it is her wish to encourage the continuing
growth of the producers in her riding.
“It is with much optimism that I hope to
work concretely with the experienced and
important players in my riding,” she said.
“The ideas are many and our exchanges
revolve around finding solutions.”
During her by-election campaign, Sauvé
made a commitment to promote local products. She said that a list of 10 commitments
she made during her campaign are shared
by citizens and will serve to guide her future
actions.

Will be first city in metropolitan region to provide service
announced the service during the March 8 public
meeting of Laval city council.
‘Added value’ for Laval, says
mayor
“We are very proud to be the first city in the
metropolitan Montreal region to offer 2-1-1
service to its citizens,” he said. “Thanks to a phone
line that will be accessible seven days out of seven,
people who don’t know which resource to turn
to for help will quickly be able to get references
for social services organizations which can meet
their needs. This is something with added value
for the Laval community.”
For her part, the executive-director of the
Information and Referral Centre, Pierrette Gagné,
congratulated Laval’s administration for its decision. “Thanks to our expertise and knowledge of
the social services sector, our team will be able to
offer a high quality service to the citizens of Laval
in conjunction with the City of Laval’s services
and Laval’s organizations,” she said.

allowing residents to quickly access social services organizations over the telephone with additional support over the World Wide Web.
A first phase of implementation for 2-1-1
service in Laval will allow access to be made
online. “If all goes well, web access should be
accessible before the end of spring,” said Gagné.
“Community services, interdependent groups
which offer support, community resources for
homeless persons and food resources for low-income persons will already be integrated to the
online list and updated continuously. Afterwards,
telephone service will be put into place for
autumn 2016 and our phone agents will be able
to answer requests on the phone every day of the
week, 70 hours per week, including holidays.”

For some time now, 2-1-1 service has been
offered in major Canadian cities. Centraide
Canada/United Way got permission in 2001 from
the CRTC to reserve the 2-1-1 number for the
country’s social services phone reference systems.
In Montreal, Centraide, the key partner in the
project, is responsible for overseeing the implementation of 2-1-1 as well as standards of quality
on the network. It should be noted that 2-1-1
service is available free of charge in English and
French. A multilingual version will also be available to callers in more than 200 languages.

The new service, accessible by simply coding

to get instant information on any of the 300

Information on related groups and organizations
in Montreal and across Quebec will also be available depending on the user’s needs.
The start of the service is the result of a fiveyear agreement reached by the City of Laval and
the Information and Referral Centre of Greater

Minister of National Revenue in Laval
Last Month the Federal Minister of National
Revenue Dianne Lebouthillier visited the office
of Laval-Les Îles, MP Fayçal El-Khoury for a
meeting to hear the concerns of his constituents
and owners in the Taxi industry about the unfair
competition of UBER.
Laval Representatives of the Regroupement
des propriétaires de taxi de Montréal (RPTM)
et du Comité de concertation et de développement de l’industrie du taxi (CPCDIT) expressed
their concerns and the problems that taxi
owners and drivers of Laval and Montreal
face with the unfair competition of Uber.
They mentioned that this company is operating in illegality. They asked the Minister to
support the Government of Quebec and the
city of Montreal in their fight against a company
that does not pay its taxes while grabbing more
and more their income. - “All we want is that
governments implement laws, asked the industry representatives in turn.
The minister stated that she understood very
well the frustrations of industry. She recalled
the limits imposed by the exclusive federal-provincial jurisdiction while stressing that
her government has initiated legal proceedings
against Uber. “Be assured that your message
is heard and directed to the right people “
said the minister and MP for Gaspésie-Les
Îles-de-la-Madelaine.
The problem particularly affects Mr.
El-Khouryas hundreds of taxi drivers live with
their families in the riding of Laval-Les Îles.
George Tanous, Kamal Sabbah, Saabe
Khairallah and Edgard El-Kalaani expressed their concerns to Laval-Les Îles,
MP Fayçal El-Khoury and especially to

Greeks Conmmunity gather for Independence Day celebration
Chomedey MNA Guy Ouellette honoured to be Parade Marshall
MARTIN C. BARRY
Hundreds of patriotic Greek converged on
the Hellenic Community Centre in Montreal
on March 26 to take part in the annual Greek
Independence Day gala.
Every year this time, Greeks trace their
modern-era quest for independence back to
1821 when the Greek War of Independence
against the Ottoman Empire began and
continued for more than a decade.
special plaques recognizing their years of
efforts and contributions to the Montreal
Hellenic community were Panagioti Tzima. A
Canadian citizen for more than 50 years, Tzima
came to this country from Kastoria, Western
Macedonia. In Canada he became an engineer and worked for many years in the pulp and
paper industry. Also honoured with a plaque
was World War II Greek armed forces veteran
Theofanis Moutis.
A decade-long struggle
Young Greeks’ contributions
Following a protracted war in which Greek
patriots received support from Russia, Britain
and France, Greece finally received recognition
as an independent nation in 1832. Today, the
Greek Revolution is celebrated on March 25
each year, with ceremonies taking place in the
days leading up to and following that date.
Among the dignitaries seated at the head
table were former Canadian Ambassador to
Greece Robert W. Peck who was the Philhellene
of the Year (and who was accompanied by
his wife Maria Pantazi-Peck), Greek Consul
General in Montreal Nicolas Sigalas, Park
Extension city councillor Mary Deros, Vimy
Liberal MP Eva Nassif and Laval city councillor
for Chomedey Aglaia Revelakis.
Ouellette Parade Marshall
Also among the dignitaries were Parc
Extension city councillor Mary Deros, SaintLaurent Borough Mayor Alan DeSousa and
Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal
(HCGM) President Nicholas T. Pagonis. It
should be noted that the Laval Greek community is part of HCGM.
Chomedey Liberal MNA Guy Ouellette was
presented as the official marshal for this year’s
Greek Independence Day parade on Jean Talon
St. in Park Extension this coming Sunday April
3rd..

A choir of children from Montreal-area
Greek schools, led by Chroma Musica music
producer Maria Diamantis, performed the
Greek and Canadian national anthems as well
as other Hellenic folk compositions. A group of
Greek youths also staged a theatrical reenactment depicting a class in a clandestine Greek
school in early 19th century Greece during the
time vof the Ottoman oppression.
Former Ambassador Peck and his wife
presented the HCGM with a special gift: a large
painting depicting ‘Mykonos.’ In an interview
with Newsfirst Multimedia, Peck, who served
two terms in Greece with the most recent
ending last November, said: “I was in Greece
at a very difficult time, but needless to say we
worked hard to try to promote opportunities
between both of our countries.
Former Ambassador honoured
“The many challenges facing Greece were
such that I was very, very touched by what I
saw at a very human level,” he added. “Now with
the refugee crisis on top of Greece’s existing
problems it makes life for everyday Greeks that
much more difficult. But my message as a friend
of Greece is that we have to continue to work
and support Greece in good times and bad –
Canada always has – and to try to find ways
that help the country move forward.”
In a speech, Hellenic Community of Greater

Among the dignitaries gathered in the
VIP lounge at the Hellenic Community
Centre before the Independence Day gala
were Chomedey Liberal MNA Guy Ouellette, Vimy Liberal MP Eva Nassif, former
Canadian Ambassador to Greece Robert
Peck and his wife, and Consul General for
Greece in Montreal Nicholas Sigalas.
Montreal President Pagonis said the example
of the 1821 Greek patriots along with the “high
values of the Greek revolution, including freedom, democracy and humanity” should be
followed today in the context of the current
crises in Greece involving economic hardships,
refugees and the dangers of terrorism. Pagonis
had special praise for the women of Greece who
have been making special efforts to feed the
refugees. “This is exactly what Hellenism stands
for,” he later told Newsfirst Multimedia.

Day Parade Marshall.

These 3 Laval divers are in the spotlight,
having recently won together 4 silver
medals in the Dubai world competitions.
All 3 will be representing Canada in Rio
this summer.
At age 16 Jennifer Abel was the youngest Canadian diver at Beijing 2008. At
London 2012, it was Abel and partner
Émilie Heymans who won Canada’s first
medal of the Games with their 3m synchro
bronze. Abel was a double medallist at
Toronto 2015, adding gold in the individual 3m event. Abel will also be competing
alongside synchro partner Pamela Ware.

stick, skates and puck so that they can have
even more fun on the ice.
For some players next year will be their
first opportunity to move into a competition team so their performance is closely
monitored by parents and coaches this
season but, for the kids, they are just having
a good time and putting their heart in it.
Meaghan Benfeito
The two have already qualified Canada for
the Summer Games in both the individual
and synchro 3-metre event.
In their second Olympic Games at
London 2012, Roseline Filion and partner Meaghan Benfeito won 10m synchro
bronze. At the 2015 Pan Am Games the
pair won gold in the 10m synchro event
and shared the podium in the individual
10m event, in which Benfeito took bronze
behind silver medallist Filion. Roseline Filion participated the in Rio
Olympic qualifier 2 months after breaking
her ankle in order to qualify a second spot
for Canada on 10-metre event. Canada’s
first spot in the 10-metre event was secured
last July. They also qualified Canada for the
10-metre synchro event spot.
- Men’s sabre
Although the Olympic qualification
period officially closes on April 4th, final
events last weekend saw five Canadians
in position to clinch an Olympic berth.
Canada could have at least one athlete
in each discipline, among them, Laval’s
Joseph Polossifakis who will represent
the nation in men’s sabre event.

I recently broke up with my girlfriend of a
year and a half. We met each other during the
breakdown of our marriages and helped each
other through hard times as friends, nothing
more.
Eventually, after we separated we became
romantically involved and things developed
from there. We moved in together after six
months and until recently had the best relationship we could have wanted. We enjoyed
each other’s company, were best friends and
talked about the future.
About four months ago something changed
for me. I started treating her with ambivalence
and had second thoughts about being in the
relationship. I was not happy. After three
months of this, I broke up with her. Until that
time I had not said anything about the way I
was feeling.
I told her I didn’t think I loved her anymore
and didn’t think I wanted to spend the rest of
my life with her. A few days later I realized I was
wrong in my decision and told her so. I didn’t
want things to be over. After a month she said
she wanted to work things out, too.
Question is, how do we deal with the uncomfortableness we feel about being together again?
How do we start over and what can we do to
remove the discomfort?
Derrick
Derrick, you thought about leaving for three
months before you told her. You weren’t having
second thoughts. Your thought was, I don’t
have feelings for you. So you left.
And came back. Did you realize you loved
her, or did you realize that the space she filled
was now empty and you didn’t love that? It’s
almost as if you moved out before you had
another apartment lined up.
People often don’t tell their boyfriend or
girlfriend, their husband or wife, they are
looking for someone else because they want to
have that person installed in their life before
they leave.
After you broke up you simply failed to
do the next step: date other people until you
found the one you love above all others. You
two were a crutch for each other in a difficult
time. That’s all. But once a crutch is no longer
needed it is put aside.
Why does it feel awkward now? Because
it’s supposed to feel awkward. Your heart is
inconstant. This can happen again and you
both know it. Your feelings toward her are
limited, and you know love is unlimited.
What does it mean to say you will work on
this relationship? Is this work, like working on
an assembly line? Would you go to baseball
games so you can work on loving baseball?
Working on it and love have little to do with
each other. What you seek is the relationship
like no other. Working on it means, I will act
contrary to my true feelings.
Anton Chekhov, the Russian short story
writer, said, “If you are afraid of loneliness,
do not marry.” What he meant was, in a
wrong relationship you will feel the greatest
loneliness of all.
She can’t trust an inconstant heart and
neither can you. You care about her, she’s a
good person, but she’s not the one for you.

Police Seek $10K Bingo Cash Thieves
Four Bank Robbers Arrested
Mar 28 – Police in Laval have asked
for the public’s help in identifying
and locating two men involved in a
robbery last May. The theft happened
on May 26, 2015 in the parking lot
of a Bingo hall at the Galeries Laval
on Boul. Corbusier. According to
police, the two suspects followed
the victims to the parking lot of the
bingo hall after they made a $10,000
withdrawal from the bank. At first, the
thieves stole the victim’s purse, then
returned and smashed the car windows
before making off with the cash. The
suspects are both white males, and one
is around 25 years old.
Anyone with information is asked
to call the LPD confidential tip line at
450-662-4636, or 911, and mention file
number LVL-150526-060.
Mar 18 – Four men were apprehended in connection with
a string of armed robberies at several banks in Laval and
Longueuil. Working in collaboration with the Longueuil
police force, Laval police were able to identify the four
suspects who had robbed a bank in Fabreville in July 2015.
Three of the suspects were apprehended while committing another bank robbery in Laval. The first suspect,
Brunelle, was caught at the door of the bank holding a
fake gun, while the second suspect, Grandmaison, was
apprehended inside the bank, and a third suspect, Gonzalez
Garcia, was nabbed in the getaway car. The fourth suspect,
Pineros, was arrested later that night. They face multiple
charges, including armed robbery and illegal possession
of firearms.

Elderly Couple Pleads Guilty to 22 Counts of
Child Abuse
Birks Robbery Suspect Arrested
Mar 22 – Police arrested a man suspected of robbing the Birks store at Carrefour Laval in
a “smash and grab” that took place on December 23rd. 51-year-old Marco Ruest appeared in
court on Monday to face 14 charges, including armed robbery, possession of a firearm and
having stolen goods.
Ruest was found on Friday with two watches from the Birks robbery in December, valued at
more than $16,000. The overall heist of that robbery was valued at more than $300,000.
This isn’t Ruest’s first foray into armed burglary. During the summer of 2004, Ruest staged
two armed robberies at the Birks store in the Fairview Mall, during which he made off with
more than $1 million in jewelry.
Mar 17 – An elderly couple from Laval are in jail after pleading guilty to 22 counts of child
abuse against five former foster children. Jacques Laporte, 75 and his wife Micheline Laporte
Charland, 71, await sentencing after pleading guilty to a total of 22 charges, including physical
and sexual abuse of the foster children in their care. The abuse took place in the early 80’s in a
home in the St. Francois district. In court, survivors of the childhood abuse described acts of
sexual molestation and physical violence, including regular beatings with a belt that often ended
in blood. Two sisters, now in their 50’s, did not appear in court, but also accused Laporte and
his wife of sexually and physically assaulting them on a weekly basis during the 60’s and 70’s.
They say the abuse began in Montreal when they were nine and six, then continued in Laval
and lasted over a decade. There were 16 different charges relating to the sisters. Five years ago,
Laporte was also found guilty of drugging and sexually and physically abusing two brothers
in their care. He served 30 months in jail. The couple both pleaded guilty to all new charges
against them. They were handcuffed and placed into detention until their sentencing on May 6.

For
more details, visit iihs.org. 3. EyeSight ® is a driver assist system which may not operate optimally under all driving conditions. EyeSight ® is not designed as a substitute for due care and attention to the road. The system may not react in every situation. The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors such as vehicle maintenance, weather and road conditions. Finally,
even with the advanced technology activated, a driver with good vision and who is paying attention will always be the best safety system. See Owner’s Manual for complete details on system operation and limitations. 4. ALG is the industry benchmark for residual values and depreciation data, alg.com.
