Cicilia Laurent, 120-year-old Haitian woman in
Laval, Que., could be world’s oldest person alive
Guinness officials are in Haiti
to verify if the 120-year-old is
new record-holder
Could the oldest person alive be a Haitian woman from Laval, Que?
Officials from Guinness World Records are in Haiti to determine if
Cicilia Laurent, who celebrated her 120th birthday Sunday evening, is
the new record-holder, Montreal’s Haitian Consulate said.
She could claim the title from 116-year-old Susannah Mushatt Jones
of Brooklyn, N.Y., who was given it last year.
Laurent would also only be two years shy of the all-time recordholder, Jeanne Louise Calment, the French woman who died at age
122 in 1997.
For Montreal’s Haitian community, Laurent is bigger than royalty, in
quite a literal sense because Queen Elizabeth is actually 30 years her
junior. In fact, Canada’s sovereign has sent Laurent a birthday greeting in
the past.
Laurent moved here from Haiti in 2010 after the devastating earthquake that killed more than 100,000 people.
In downtown Montreal, at the Haitian Consulate, many generations
gathered to celebrate her life on the weekend.
“It can’t be easy to live all the way up to 120,” said 12-year-old Jason
Merjuste.
Such longevity isn’t easy, but her family said a few things help.
Laurent constantly prays and enjoys watching cartoons on TV. She
never turns the news on because that stresses her out.
“She likes everybody, and she likes to laugh and to have fun with
everybody,” said her granddaughter-in-law, Marie-Lorna Pierre.
Laurent doesn’t eat junk food anymore. Her diet is all natural,
consisting of chicken, bananas, juice and mashed corn.
She wouldn’t even eat her birthday cake.
Her birthday wish? To meet Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and ask
him a special favour: Allow her two great-grandsons in Haiti to visit her
in Canada so she can see them again.
The response so far from the Prime Minister’s Office is a congratulatory
letter on the way.

City council gets rowdy over ethics and Khalil
Opposition wants Sainte-Dorothée councillor’s resignation
Mayor accuses opposition of defamation and slander
(TLN) Laval city council’s monthly meeting on February 2 became a “tennis match”
between the mayor and members of the
opposition.
The reason was persistent demands by
opposition members that Sainte-Dorothée
city councillor Ray Khalil resign after newspapers and television newscasts reported that
back in June 2013 police found contraband
tobacco and firearms at the residence of his
father, George Khalil.
Opposition councillors Michel Trottier and
Alain Lecompte demanded Khalil’s resignation since he is the manager of his father’s
restaurant, Lordia.
The mayor repeatedly reassured them
that Khalil, from the moment he was elected
Saint-Dorothée’s city councillor, has had no
relations or interests in the Lordia restaurant.
“I was for 30 years in the police force and
I learned that before accusing anyone there
should be an inquiry,” said Mayor Marc
Demers. “If someone is going to enquire on
the subject it will be the ethics officer of the
City, but it is not ethical to accuse someone
purely on allegations,” he added with an angry
tone.
Ray Khalil: I have nothing to do
with the restaurant any more
It was inevitable for Ray Khalil to address
the council. In a short speech he explained
that he has no shares in the Lordia restaurant
and he withdrew from the restaurant long
ago. Sometimes, though, he goes to give them
a hand when it is really busy, he added.

the money is badly needed since the swimming pool facility is in a terrible state. She
said the lockers are also broken, the showers
don’t work, and with those that work the
water temperature is not stable, but on the
contrary is extremely hot. “Imagine little children using the showers what could happen to
them,” she said. On top of that the dryers do
not work plus there is a problem of insulation
and heating in the rooms used by the Jardins

Chomedey councillor and official opposition leader Aglaia Revelakis presented a
motion for the Laval transport authority to
implement a direct transport service – shuttle
– from the city to the Dorval airport. “This
will help many citizens in their travel plans,”
she said. Unfortunately since there was no
one to second the motion – even among the
independent opposition councillors – the
motion was dropped.
Khalil: “I am neither an administrator or a
manager of the restaurant.”

Demers: “You can not ask a resination
just on allegations.”
Among the various questions coming from
citizens, one had to do with the deterioration of the infrastructures of the Centre
Josée Gauthier: “Centre du Sablon has
been waiting for funding to do major
renovations.”
Mayor Demers pleased with new provincial cabinet
(TLN) Laval mayor Marc Demers has
reacted favorably to Quebec Premier Philippe
Couillard’s recent shuffle of his cabinet.
Demers had special praise for the choice of
Martin Coiteux as the new Municipal Affairs
Minister.

“Mr. Coiteux will be for us a reliable partner who is dependable and conscientious to
put forward the cities’ dossiers, especially as
regards municipal autonomy,” said Demers.
“As regards our city, it is with confidence
that I welcome this nomination and I know
that we will be able to speak openly about
our dossiers.”
The appointment of Jacques Daoust as
Transport Minister elicited the mayor to
comment: “The arrival of Mr. Daoust will
allow us to discuss with him our willingness
to electrify transportation as well as our
desire to develop active transport in Laval.”
Anglade appointment
Demers said he was also pleased with
the appointment of Dominique Anglade as
Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation
as well as Digital Strategy. “We worked with
Mrs. Anglade at Montreal International
where she demonstrated qualities of leadership and of vision,” he said. “We know that
we will find in her a minister who listens
and who is in tune with the direction Laval
took recently with regard to economic
development.”
Charbonneau appointment
Finally, Demers said he was pleased to
see that Mille-Îles Liberal MNA Francine
Charbonneau was given responsibility for
senior citizens as well as oversight for the
Laval region. “As the third most important
in Quebec, we will be able to pursue our
discussions which are already started on
Laval’s priority dossiers which she knows
well,” Demers said.

QESBA should beware of Moreau as
new Education Minister
Although the Quebec English School
Boards Association says it is pleased with
the nomination of Pierre Moreau as the
province’s new Minister of Education,
the QESBA’s members have either short
memories or they don’t follow municipal
affairs news very closely.
Either way the QESBA doesn’t appear to
grasp the implication of Moreau’s appointment, taking into account at least some of
his past municipal affairs record which
included intolerance and a tendency to be
heavy-handed and authoritarian.
In a statement the QESBA issued last
week on the same day Premier Philippe
Couillard announced his new cabinet, the
school boards association said it has always
tried, in good faith, to maintain a positive
relationship with successive Ministers of
Education.
“We hope that today’s nomination
will bring a new openness and a healthy
dialogue among all partners in education
for the ultimate benefit of our students and
community,” the QESBA said. “We are confi-
dent that the Minister will quickly call for a
meeting of the Table Québec-Commissions
scolaires in order to gain a proper perspective of our public school systems and on the
English minority community.”
Putting aside the fact the education
portfolio has been in the hands of several
ministers since the Couillard government
came to power nearly two years ago, let’s
take a look back a little more than a year
ago to December 2014 when Moreau was a
few months into his mandate at Municipal.
Around that time, Moreau got into a
fairly strident public confrontation with
Laval mayor Marc Demers. This was after
Demers claimed that a 3.2 per cent overall
tax hike projected for his city’s taxpayers in
2015 was largely the result of Quebec’s new
“fiscal pact” which summarily terminated
$15 million in annual transfer payments
to Laval.
While the mayors of most of Quebec’s
municipalities chose to be discreet about
the situation, Demers had the temerity to
actually link the tax increase in his city to
the provincial government’s “austerity”
program. It was a criticism that Moreau,
looming high over the towns and cities,
wouldn’t stand for and which ought to stand
out as a distinct sign of his potential for
being unconciliatory.
At one point, in an effort fairly obviously
meant to humiliate Demers as well as the
mayor of Longueuil who shared the Laval
mayor’s views, Moreau threatened to
withhold transfers owed by Quebec to the
two cities if they didn’t roll back their tax
increases. Then, in a manipulative gesture
playing on the average taxpayer’s natural
inclinations, Moreau threatened that the
provincial government itself would mail
refunds to taxpayers and send Laval the
bill afterwards.
Since downloading expenses onto school
boards and municipalities is a tactic the
municipal affairs and education ministries
are both well versed in, it’s rather surprising
that the QESBA would see anything positive
in Moreau’s appointment – although the
association’s stance is perhaps understand-

A decision by a Quebec Superior Court
Judge to award $8 million in damages to a
21-year-old man paralyzed five years ago
following a brutal and sneaky on-ice body
check sends a chilling message into Canada’s
hockey community: your future could be
nipped in the bud financially should you
wilfully inflict injury on someone – even
while playing hockey.
In his ruling, Judge Daniel W. Payette
essentially dismissed a line of reasoning
promoted by the NHL and other apologists for hockey violence, that the onus of
responsibility is such matters is primarily
upon players who must protect themselves.
“A participant in a sporting activity is
entitled to the expectation that other players
will take reasonable steps to avoid gestures
that are likely to cause prejudice, even within
the framework of a dangerous sport,” Justice
Payette wrote in his judgment issued on
Feb. 1 regarding the incident dating back
to October 2010.
In itself, the judgement constitutes a
condemnation not only of the acts of an
individual, but of an entire system upholding
how hockey is played in Canada. Ironically,
the player, Ludovic Gauvreau-Beaupré,
who was ordered, along with his insurer, to
pay the staggering amount, went on after

the incident to play in the Quebec Major
Junior Hockey League. He currently plays
at a semi-professional level where brawling
is a common occurrence.
Gauvreau-Beaupré had been playing for
the Royal de Montréal against the Patriotes
de Laval in 2010. The injured player, Andrew
Zaccardo who suffered a serious spinal injury
and paralysis of the legs with partial paralysis above the waist, was an up-and-coming
player who had led his team the year before
in scoring.
The hit was something that happened
quickly: although it was only seconds into
the first period when tempers should have
been cool, Zaccardo made a sudden stop
at the sideboards and Gauvreau-Beaupré
slammed into the physically smaller player
with obvious full force.
Two years before the 2010 incident,
Zaccardo had also been involved in a similar
collision for which he was suspended for
two games. It’s worth noting that the judge
ruled legally on an issue that Hockey Quebec
and Hockey Canada have been unable to
resolve within the sport, although they’ve
tried for years.
Gauvreau-Beaupré, 21, is currently listed
on the 2015-16 roster of the Prédateurs
de Laval, who play in the Ligue Nord-

described by an online encyclopedia as a
“low level” league “not known for its skill
level. Its teams employ many enforcers
and has a rather infamous reputation for
on-ice antics, primarily fisticuffs. The LNAH
has the unofficial reputation as the world’s
toughest hockey league.”
The $8 million award is believed to be
the largest in Canadian sports history, with
two previous decisions in British Columbia
resulting in awards of $4 million each. All the
same, Hockey Canada and Hockey Quebec,
which had previously been named as co-defendants in this latest case, were absolved by
the judge who said they had taken measures
to educate players about the dangers of rear
body checking.
But as Judge Payette also stated in this
case, “a hockey rink is not a law-free zone.”
Therefore, it might be in the best interests
of the overseers of the sport in this country
and province to adopt a more pro-active
approach to the problem before it’s too late,
lest they find themselves forced to pay a
multi-million dollar judgment if found guilty
of abdicating their responsibility.

able as a diplomatic gesture towards the
new education minister. All the same, what
seems more likely is that Moreau will end
up doling out to them a treatment not much
different from what he gave municipalities.
Regarding Premier Couillard’s other
choices for cabinet positions, they are
perhaps an indicator of his temperament
– politically and personally speaking. A
neurosurgeon prior to immersing himself in
politics, Couillard arguably has been able to
use the cool-headed qualities learned from
his specialized medical training to unflinchingly implement the rigorous program his
government is imposing in stages running
up to the next election in two years.
The Premier has come to be known as
someone with a very long memory, someone who does not take disloyalty, rejection
or slights easily, especially when they are
political. While questions are still being
asked as to why former Transport Minister
Robert Poëti was summarily tossed from
the cabinet in the latest shuffle, it can be
viewed as an example of the prerogative
of a Premier – or as a sign of personal
capriciousness.
It might be recalled that following the
2013 Quebec Liberal Party leadership race,
when Couillard prevailed over Raymond
Bachand and Pierre Moreau who were
also in the running, among those to feel
Couillard’s wrath afterwards for not
supporting him were Chomedey Liberal
MNA Guy Ouellette. All signs indicate
that Ouellette’s paying the price for giving
Bachand his backing.
Despite Ouellette’s sterling qualifications
as a Sûreté du Québec police officer and
investigator with 30 years experience (he
was very active in the 1990s during the
Hells Angels gang war and logic suggests
that he ought to be a shoe-in for the Public
Security Ministry), Ouellette’s exclusion
from successive Couillard cabinets makes it
quite evident that the Premier hasn’t forgotten the past and quite possibly never will.
While Couillard’s predecessor, former
Liberal Premier Jean Charest, was also
cautious in his selection of teammates, it
was nothing in comparison to the towering
conceit of the province’s current Premier.
On the other hand, sometimes what’s
needed to drive a difficult program to
successful completion is someone with an
exceptionally large ego and the determination to win another election.

CRTC executes warrant in malicious
malware investigation
The Canadian Radio-television and
Telecommunications Commission (CRTC)
today announced that it executed a warrant
under Canada’s anti-spam legislation
(CASL) at two locations in the Niagara
region of Ontario.
The warrant was obtained as part of an
ongoing investigation relating to the installation of malicious software (malware) and
the alteration of transmission data. The
CRTC launched its investigation further
to a lead from FireEye Inc., a vendor
specializing in cyber threat protection
and forensics.
The CRTC takes online threats very
seriously and is working closely with its
domestic and international partners,
including law enforcement agencies to
aggressively pursue investigations of
alleged violations under Canada’s antispam legislation.
Canadians are encouraged to report
spam, malware and other electronic threats
to the Spam Reporting Centre. The information sent to the Centre is used by the
CRTC, the Competition Bureau and the
tools at its disposal and is using cyber
investigative techniques to investigate
alleged violations of Canada’s anti-spam
legislation.
The warrant was granted by a Justice
of the Peace, from the Ontario Court of

Vimont city councillor for Vimont,
Michel Poissant, announced recently that
the snow will be removed from the pathway,
giving access to the Vimont train station
from Renaix street. The implementation of
this measure is a step forward in promoting
active mobility and public transportation.
Citizens living only meters away from
the train station had to take a detour of
approximately 3 km to get to it as soon as
snow would start accumulating. Because
snow was not removed, citizens could not
use the path and instead used their cars
to get around it. This situation was problematic for Vimont’s councillor, who is
concerned with promoting healthy lifestyles
and the environment. Now that the snow
is removed from the pathway, citizens are
only a few steps away from the train station.
“It was essential for me to give access to
the pathway”, he said
Poissant went to meet citizens Monday
morning at Vimont station to share the
good news with them. He greeted them
on the docking station to invite them to
use the pathway.
In accordance with Laval’s Urbaine de
nature strategic vision, “this measure will
improve the neighbourhood residents’
quality of life. The implementation of this
measure is in harmony with all our decisions,” concluded Poissant.

Lalie Bélanger-Dion who oversees suicide
issues at the Laval public health office.
“One must never hesitate to ask for help,”
she added. “At one time or another, anyone
can be living through difficult periods. It’s
normal. But when despair takes control, it
is absolutely important to seek help, just as
one would do for the flu or another type
of infection that would prevent you from
being well. Speak to someone who will not
judge you, who will listen and who will be
able to help.”
Bilingual crisis line
Sylvie Picard, executive-director of
the Laval regional crisis centre (L’Îlot),
points out that it is possible to call this
local suicide prevention line at any time
at 1-866-APPELLE (277-3553). Interveners
who are trained in crisis management are
there to answer calls from people who are
in emotional distress. The service is free,
bilingual, confidential and available 24
hours a day, seven days a week.
According to the public health office,
impending suicide can often be difficult
to recognize in people, and that is why they
emphasize the importance of not relying on
appearances. “Instead of avoiding a person
who shows psychological signs of distress,
one must approach them and ask how they
are and listen,” says Stéphane Chartrand,
coordinator of the mental health and
dependency program at the CISSS de Laval.

Experts estimate that there are on average
42 suicides annually in Laval for an average
of 11 in 100,000 people (which is significantly lower than in the rest of Quebec).
Since the year 2000, they say, there’s been a
decline in the number of suicides, although
80 per cent continue to be men. The highest
rate of suicide is among men aged 35 to
49 years, followed by those 50 to 64 years.
Among women, those 50-64 years are most
likely to commit suicide.

Outrage. That’s the only word that comes
close to describing one Laval business
owner’s feelings of frustration after 17
years of fighting with the City of Laval over
a chronic but as yet unresolved flooding
and sewer backup problem on Notre Dame
Boulevard in Chomedey.
Monster on the loose
“We’re fighting a monster called Ville de
Laval,” Jane Moraitis, owner of the Oneiro II
boutique, which specializes in formal attire
and accessories for baptisms, first communions and confirmations, said in an interview
with The Laval News.
“They deprived us of our dream being
accomplished, our time with family and
friends, suffering great losses, and suffering
with health issues caused by immense
fatigue and stress?” added Moraitis.
In Greek, the name of her boutique,
Oneiro, translates literally as dream. But
since buying their building in the late 1990s,
the situation has been anything but. “We
started out with big dreams of making
something exclusive and big, which it is, but
this is what we’ve ended up with,” she said.
A year after purchasing the building at
3812-18 Notre-Dame Blvd. in August 1998,
they faced the first of a series of floods: it
was a huge inundation that destroyed an
estimated $27,000 worth of merchandise
in the basement, not including lost patterns
and plans or time spent cleaning up.
A nightmare grows worse
Her family’s dream of success came to
a halt. While the insurance company paid
the first $10,000, the city – citing a variety
of reasons – refused to pay the balance of
$17,000. She took precautions by closing
the valves on the floor of the basement and
by placing all the boxes of merchandise on
bricks.
However, when the city decided to repair
and enlarge the street in front of the business about eight years ago, the problem
worsened and became a nightmare. Every
time there was a heavy rainfall, the street
became a river, since the sewers appeared
inadequate to do their job properly.
On June 3, 2014, rainwater came in
from the front doors of the business. That
day, according to Moraitis, she and other
members of her family removed 48 huge
buckets of water from the basement floor
and spent days afterwards cleaning and
disinfecting. Then during another large
downpour on June 14, water in the basement rose to about a foot, ruining everything that had been placed on the bricks.
The next day, they realized they had close
to $14,000 in damages, and this time their
insurance would not cover it. And since the
problem was recurring, they were now at
risk of not being covered anymore. Fed up
and tired, they sought a solution by calling a
building inspection company, which helped
guide them to a foundation specialist.
Expert said sewers blocked
After being told it was not a foundation
problem, they consulted a drain specialist. The report from the drain specialist
shocked them. According to Moraitis, there
was absolutely nothing wrong with their
building, but the specialist agreed with the
insurance adjuster that since the building
has a flat roof, the water from the roof had
nowhere to go when the sewers were so
badly blocked.
Moraitis maintains there’s pretty much
nothing she and her family can do, as the
only solution would be to force the city to fix
inadequate sewers. She said that when the
insurance adjuster visited the surrounding
area, the other store owners told him that

business as well as at others.
they also had sewer blockage problems and
floods for years, which more recently had
become a nightmare.
According to Moraitis, she was told by
municipal officials in September 2014 that
the city acknowledged the sewer problem
and that it would be dealt with within a few
years with the help of some government
subsidies. But when nothing further was
heard, she attended a city council meeting in
December 2014 to bring up the issue again.
Sparks flew in exchanges between Moraitis
and the mayor and the council president.
Waiting for their day in court
Feeling they had no choice but to go to
Small Claims Court, on Jan. 29 she and her
family asked the court for a postponement
of their case. In the meantime, she maintains, the city offered a settlement, $1,000,
which she and her family declined.
Moraitis claims that she asked the city
that if such huge problems with the sewers
on Notre Dame Blvd. existed for so long,
how come they gave permits in the area for
businesses like a baby and children’s store,
a restaurant, a depanneur and an old age
home?
In a final ironic twist, Moraitis said that
during the first week of June 2015, a sink
hole appeared on the surface of Notre Dame
Blvd. outside their business. They could see
the asphalt rising into the air, under which was
a black hole, meters wide and deep, as far as
the eye could see. Although the city poured
gravel in and patched it up, she wonders: if
the street collapses one day, will the city be
blamed if somebody gets hurt?

CSDL holds open house at its professional
training centres
(TLN) On Feb. 2, the Commission scolaire de
Laval (CSDL) held an open house at its eight professional training centres. Several hundred people
interested in expanding their horizons turned up
on this special day to learn about the CSDL’s range
of professional training services.
During the one-day event, visitors were able to
take part in workshops, visit premises and view
demonstrations of all kinds. Students and their
teachers were also on hand to speak about courses
and to answer questions.

2018
Expanding job market
Most of all, the day was organized to inform
visitors of the options which are available for professional training in Laval. As the availability of certain
types of jobs will be expanding in coming years, the
CSDL’s training centres will be playing a key role in
the awarding of diplomas by the Quebec Ministry of
Education following two years of intensive training.
A wide range of training programs are available
at the eight professional training centres of the
CSDL. Whether it’s in the domains of health, auto
mechanics, restaurant management, construction,
administration or fashion and design, there’s something for everyone.
(TLN) As a result of recent interest stirred up by media
reports regarding the City of Laval’s plans to set up a
centralized animal protection office, officials with the city
have decided to set the record straight.
The city says its main goal is to equip itself with a
comprehensive animal services centre by 2018. For that
purpose $15.3 million has been set aside in the 2016-2018
triennial capital works budget. In the meantime, preparatory work is underway for the construction of the facility
and a city-owned site has been reserved.
Quality animal protection
“We hope to offer quality and ethical animal services
which respond to the needs of Laval residents,” says Marc
Demers. “To do this we need to be proactive while prioritizing practices and actions adapted to the well-being of
animals on our territory. In this effort, the city will be
accompanied by a consultative committee made up of
experts from the sectors of animal health, management
of large projects, community action and legal affairs.”
In the meantime before the opening of the new centre,
the mayor said an animal control contract is being awarded
to Berger Blanc. He said the city will also be relying on
independent inspectors who will be making sure that
good practices prevail in regards to animal welfare and
health in Laval.

According to Laval executive-committee member
Sandra Desmeules, the three-year contract to Berger Blanc
costing $1,836,000 includes an option to renew for a year.
“What is certain is that our new supplier will have to
conform to all legal requirements and regulations,” she
said. “In addition, Berger Blanc commits itself to working
closely with organizations in the community.”
Berger Blanc’s contract, which begins on Feb. 27, stipulates that it is responsible for examining, vaccinating,
deworming, sterilizing and placing microchips in animals
before their adoption. The company will also be required
to refuse to euthanize healthy animals simply because
someone requests it.
Contractors’ obligations

Berger Blanc is also required to take part in two microchip days per year, with on-site adoption and sterilization
information, in conjunction with community organizations. And the company must work proactively with
animal shelters in order to facilitate interactions leading
to adoptions.
“The city has the well-being of animals at heart and
believes in the importance of a partnership with the various players involved,” added Demers. “We are committed
to letting be known what our thinking is regarding the
well-being of animals with the development of the animal
services centre.”

$1 million for children’s breakfasts from
President’s Choice

Donation announced at École primaire du Bois Joli
President’s Choice Children’s Charity
announced during an event on Jan. 22 at École
primaire du Bois Joli in eastern Laval that
it is making a donation of $1 million to the
non-profit ‘Breakfast for Learning’ organization
in order to support 29,371 children in Quebec.
According to President’s Choice, the money
will be invested in developing, implementing
and supporting healthy eating programs in
schools by offering 4,956,263 breakfasts,
lunches and snacks to kids across the province
who are in need.
Hunger a problem
Despite greater awareness in recent years of
the impact hunger makes on school children
and their ability to learn, it remains a very real
problem across Quebec and its regions. The
most recent HungerCount, published by in Fall
2015 by Food Banks Canada, says that close to
400,000 people, including 150,000 children, go
hungry every month in Quebec.
“The health and well-being of children is
a priority for Loblaw,” said Johanne Héroux,
director of the Quebec branch of President’s
Choice Children’s Charity. “We are pleased
to help children to maximize their academic
potential and to promote awareness of the
importance of healthy eating, thanks to our
partnership with Breakfast for Learning.”
Helping future leaders
Laval mayor Marc Demers, who was one of
several dignitaries on hand for the announcement, said he was particularly pleased to see
such a large gift being made for the well-being
of children who are the future. “This is the best
thing that any community can do,” he said. “I am
certain that there people here in this room who
one day will become mayors or elected officials.
“Today it’s our turn to extend to you a hand
and to help you,” Demers continued. “But later
it will maybe be you who will make decisions to
take care of the elderly which is important. This
is an important gift for the whole community.
It’s not everyday that a foundation or an enterprise offers $1 million in assistance for a cause
as good as this.”
Encouraging school success
Quebec Family Minister and Liberal MNA for
Mille-Îles Francine Charbonneau was equally
pleased with the gift, as were Liberal MP for
Alfred-Pellan Angelo Iacono and Commission
scolaire de Laval president Louise Lortie.
Experts say that nutrition programs aren’t
just beneficial to children’s nourishment, they
also have a direct positive effect on their behaviour and success in school. Studies have shown
that a nutritious and healthy diet helps children
concentrate and solve problems in class while
also stimulating creativity and performance in
their studies.

Better eating habits
“Our programs’ success is very tangible,”
said Marie-José Mastromonaco, Breakfast for
Learning’s regional manager. “During the school
year of 2014-2015, 90 per cent of participating
schools in Quebec observed an improvement

‘Backbeat Showband’ winter gala fundraiser has earned $46,275 for educational
equipment, programs and resources
at schools and training centres across
the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board’s
territory in the Laval, Laurentian and
Lanaudière regions.
Popular silent auction
Held at the Château Royal in Laval on
Jan. 21, the 2016 event’s silent auction
featured some very fine collectibles. The
items on the block included a numbered
bleacher seat from the old Montreal
Forum that had been autographed by the
Montreal Canadiens’ late great captain
Jean Béliveau, a hockey jersey signed by
the Habs’ star forward Alex Galchenyuk,
as well as some Maurice ‘The Rocket’
Richard memorabilia.

for four to experience a simulated space

Vacation’s Over
I don’t remember meeting my boyfriend, but he always
says the minute he saw me he had to find
a way to get me into his life.
Five years ago we started dating. Here’s
the catch. He travels for work so our relationship has always been long distance.
Add to that, he is legally separated from
his wife but not legally divorced.
We travel together about once a month,
no less than four days at a time. It’s been

Police Seek Assault
Suspect with Aging Issues?
Jan 27 – Police are turning to the public for help in identifying a man
wanted in connection with an armed assault that occurred last year on
November 15 at the Shell gas station located at 3785 Boul. Dagenais
West in Fabreville. The suspect approached the cash to buy cigars and
became highly aggressive and verbally abusive towards the cashier when
she asked to see the suspect’s ID. After proving his age and grabbing his
cigars, the agitated man threw some coins at the cashier, then picked
up a nearby blunt object and hurled it at the cashier’s head. Luckily, she
managed to avoid being hit.
The suspect is described as a French-speaking Caucasian male, about
30-35 years old, with a mustache, goatee, and prescription glasses. He
is about 5-foot-10-inches (1.78 m) tall. At the time of the incident, he
was wearing a red hoody sweatshirt with a white logo, dark blue jeans,
a grey NY Yankees cap, and white running shoes.

Murder
suspect
turns
himself
in
Wanted for
masturbating in public
Jan 28 – His name was on the list of ‘Quebec’s
10 most wanted criminals’ for less than a
day before 56-year-old André Michel Boyer
turned himself in to authorities to face charges
of murder in the first degree and improperly
interfering with a dead body.
The victim, Laval resident Domenico Iacono,
went missing on October 25, 2015. When Laval
police issued a missing person’s report, tips
from the public led investigators to the victim’s
abandoned car in Montreal-North a few days
later. Iacono’s corpse had been stuffed into the
trunk of his car.
Owner of Construction Amlac National
Inc., Boyer was linked to the disappearance
and murder of Iacono after the investigation
revealed that the two men had had a business
relationship. Authorities confirmed that the
murder took place at a residence that belonged
to Boyer. After the homicide, Boyer fled the
country and travelled to Costa Rica and then
Asia, before returning to Quebec on January
11th, according to the Canada Border Services
Agency. The murder suspect turned himself in
to local police shortly after a Canada-wide arrest
warrant had been issued for him.
Jan 28 – The LPD is asking for
help in identifying a man who is
facing charges for masturbating
in public. Last summer at about 3
p.m. on July 10th, a man made his
way by boat to the Ste-Rose belvedere located at 345 Boul. Ste-Rose
and proceeded to pleasure himself
in front of several witnesses.
The suspect is described as a
Caucasian male, about 50 years
old, 6 feet (1.83 m) tall and about
200 pounds (90 kg) heavy.

arrested a man in Chomedey who
was carrying a concealed gun.
Several witnesses alerted 911 at
about 2:45 p.m. after the man had

Proof that Crime Doesn’t Pay
Jan 20 – Police are asking for information that could
help identify an armed robber that ostensibly held up the
Tim Horton’s on Boul. le Corbusier at 2 a.m. on October
19, 2015. The suspect entered and headed straight for the
cash register, demanding the contents from the cashier.
She looked down to open the register and when she looked
up again, the suspect was heading out the door and into a
waiting car.
The suspect is described as a French-speaking Caucasian
male, about 30 years old, 5-foot-9-inches (1.75 m) tall with
a medium build. He has short brown hair and at the time
he was wearing glasses, dark pants, a white shirt, a black
coat and black shoes.
