Keeping Families Close
Ronald McDonald House in Raleigh: the First Year,
First Miracles
When Campbell Reed was born at 36 weeks with a premature lung and a lung infection, your support was a
lifesaver for her family.
Doctors in the neonatal ICU worked tirelessly to treat Campbell’s infection while parents Katie and Eric and grandmother
Elizabeth waited anxiously. The family, from Sanford, NC, needed overnight lodging closer than a hotel room, and they
needed more comfort than the NICU waiting area could offer.
“I felt bad asking my 67-year-old mom to sleep in a chair, and I was
recovering from a C-Section,” said Katie.
The day after Campbell was born, Katie and Eric found the Ronald McDonald
House at WakeMed. Katie said their room was extremely helpful because it is
located only one floor down from the NICU.
“Having a child in NICU is extremely emotionally taxing, especially when
you don’t expect it. To be waiting, not just day to day but hour by hour…that
was tough,” said Katie. “Having one less worry of finding a place to stay or
being away from her…that’s an extreme comfort.”
One of 99
Campbell is just one of the 99 infants and children your gifts
touched during the first 12 months of RMH at WakeMed.
On April 15, the Raleigh House celebrated its one-year anniversary. The
residential hospitality program offers overnight lodging, laundry and meals
for the families of up to five pediatric patients each day.
The new House joins an established in-hospital program, the Ronald
McDonald Family Room, that offers respite to the caregivers of all pediatric
patients at WakeMed Children’s Hospital.
Executive director Oie Osterkamp calls the new Raleigh House “a natural
extension of our efforts to support seriously ill children in Wake and
surrounding counties that mirrors our residental and hospital programs in
Durham.” He adds, “We hope this is only the beginning of our support for
families seeking healing in Wake County.”

Long-Time Leaders
Celebrated at Annual
Gala
On March 3, more than 400 friends
gathered at the Angus Barn Pavilion for
the 16th Annual Hearts of Gold Gala.
The evening honored three sustaining leaders
of the organization. Each received the Heart
of Gold Award, the highest honor given by
Ronald McDonald House of Durham & Wake.
Carolyn Ketner Penny
When the doctor who saved her daughter’s
life asked a favor, Carolyn did what any
mother would do. She said, “Yes.”
Her answer wasn’t surprising. However,
the dedication, hard work and love she has
put into RMH since then is nothing short of
extraordinary.
Before the Durham House opened in 1980,
Carolyn was a formidable force, raising
awareness at press conferences across North
Carolina, helping select a site for the House
and rallying statewide support. She proved
to have the skills needed to lead the House in
its formative days. More than 36 years later,
Carolyn is still a vital advocate and leader.
Ric Richards
Surprisingly, Ric’s involvement with the
House isn’t tied to his career with
McDonald’s. His concern for seriously ill
children and their families runs far deeper.
When Ric was just 16, his beloved little
sister, Karen, died. The unexpected loss left a
permanent mark on Ric’s heart, directing his
first career as a nurse anesthetist and later his
involvement in RMH.
2
L-R, Edith Rosenblatt, Ric Richards and Carolyn Penny enjoy
a light moment at the close of the Hearts of Gold Gala.
Ric’s support of the Durham House began 17 years ago. He soon joined
the board of trustees and, in 2009, became president. During his tenure,
the Durham House expansion, from 29 to 55 rooms, was completed. Ric’s
leadership in fundraising and oversight of the construction were
instrumental in the campaign’s success. Always willing to do whatever is
needed, he served as interim executive director during a time of change.
As president of our inaugural advisory board, Ric is never far from our
‘home away from home.’
Edi th Rosenblat t
Edith has a tremendous heart for children. During her 50 years working
at Duke Hospital, she has made it her business to support patients and to
know them by name. The children and their families look forward to her
daily visits to their hospital rooms, a bright spot in their day.
Edith’s great impact on the lives of the children, however, extends well
beyond the hospital.
More than 35 years ago, she was a part of a small group of visionaries who
understood that families need extra support when a child is sick. Edith was
instrumental in launching the Ronald McDonald House of Durham and,
once it opened, spent thousands of hours checking families in and out and
keeping the House running smoothly.
Through the years, Edith’s involvement has never waned. She is still an
active member of our Board of Trustees and has helped groom
organizational leaders, shape the direction of our service growth and has
been a tireless advocate for the children and their families.

Healing is a Family Matter for
Virginia Teenager
Meet 17-year-old Talejah Watts from Virginia.
The shy teen was like others her age until January 7, when she developed
a severe headache and stroke-like symptoms. Her mother, Wanda, rushed
her to a local hospital where doctors found bleeding on her brain.
TT, as her family calls her, was transferred to Duke Children’s Hospital.
Continued testing confirmed the diagnosis of Acute Promyelocytic
Leukemia (APML).
She was treated in the pediatric ICU for five days and then transferred to
a pediatric unit. TT is now receiving physical rehab following the brain
bleed and chemotherapy for APML.
Your Love at Work
TT’s family is one of 60 staying at our Durham and Raleigh Houses each
night. With your help, RMH keeps TT’s family together, her little sister
and mother by her side since her arrival.
When asked her favorite thing about Ronald McDonald House, she said,
“The food and the love.” TT and her family are favorites of other House
guests for their generous friendship and peer support.
Doctors expect the family to be at RMH until late October. Wanda sends
thanks to you and other RMH friends for keeping her family together
during her daughter’s healing.

KEEPING FAMILIES CLOSE in the TRIANGLE:
Creating Space for Physical, Emotional, Spiritual Healing
When families come to Ronald
McDonald House, they are filled with
worry – worries about the future, about
how to comfort a seriously ill child right
now, how to maintain employment and
keep the family afloat. The added worry
about where the family will stay while
out of town for medical care and where
to find three family meals each day can
seem too much.
This is where you come in. Your
support of residential and in-hospital
programs provides respite and
residence to caregivers and siblings
while clincians treat the pediatric
patient. We stabilize families in crisis
so they can focus on a child’s medical
treatment.
And, together with you, Ronald
McDonald House does so much
more!
Studies show that children heal better
when their families are near. Further,
children’s medical outcomes improve
when parents are free of financial and
logistical stresses. Outside support
improves everything!
2015 was a milestone year for us. We
launched a new Ronald McDonald
House at WakeMed, a first for Raleigh.
Our hopes were high for this familycare partnership, and we weren’t
disappointed.
Throughout our first year, we heard
stories from caregivers – first-time
parents of preemie babies, the parents
of children with new, scary diagnoses,
and others whose children had
devastating accidents.
These parents and families thanked
Ronald McDonald House for one
thing: room to breathe.
This sacred space is where parents turn
inward to their source of strength; it is
the place caregivers receive support in
turn, allowing them to better nurture
children facing difficult treatments.
Thank you for creating this breathing
space for so many families, our friends
and neighbors in Durham, Raleigh and
beyond. Thank you for keeping
families close!
With gratitude,
Jerry Schafer, President
Oie Osterkamp, Executive Director
Oie and Jerry with 4-year-old
transplant patient Austin at the
Durham House.
This spring, Austin will be admitted
for a life-saving transplant for
Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), the “bubble boy”
disease.
After his release from the hospital,
Austin and his parents will live at
RMH for several months while his
new immune system stabilizes. Like
other RMH families, they will return
to RMH for periodic visits
throughout Austin’s childhood.
Friends like you make this possible!

Ronald McDonald Houses are more than a place to stay. They offer space for
respite, hot meals, activities and even therapy dogs to pediatric patients and their families.
Without Ronald McDonald Houses, the families of young patients would sleep in their cars
or in hospital lobbies. Thanks to thousands of friends and volunteers just like you, Ronald
McDonald House can be there for families so they can be there when their children need them
most. Thank you for being a hero to seriously ill children!

Pet therapy is a favorite
evening activity for
patients, siblings and
parents. We are
blessed with several
certified canine “regulars”
like Jackson (left).
Many families who stay at
our Houses have pets at
home that they cannot see
for extended periods of
time while they are with us
for treatment.
We love our dedicated dogs
and their people!
