$1 million campaign to reform the national Republican Party
platform between now and the 2016 GOP convention.
The group’s aim is to strike existing
anti-gay language from the official party
platform and replace it with more respectful
and unifying language.
“It’s time to modernize the Republican
Party,” said Tyler Deaton, campaign manager
for the Young Conservatives for the Freedom
to Marry. “Our aim is to make the national
platform less divisive toward gay people and
their families — and more focused on
unifying all conservatives around our core
beliefs of freedom, family and limited
government.
“The future of the Party is clear on the
marriage issue — a seismic shift is already

tarting at midnight on May 6, the Sacramento LGBT
Community Center is asking everyone to “give where your
heart is,” as part of the region’s 24-hour BIG Day of Giving
online challenge, organized by the Sacramento Region Community
Foundation and GiveLocalNow.
Sadly, the Sacramento area falls 15 percent
below the national average for giving, so
local nonprofits will participate in the
challenge with the goal of increasing the
number of donors and the amount of their
donations across the region.
“We are very excited to be a part of this
regional effort and hope to increase our
donor base so that we can ensure a bright
future for programs currently offered at the
Center and expand our operations to meet
changing community needs,” said Interim
Executive Director David Heitstuman. “We
are so thankful for the hundreds of people
who have stepped up to give back to the
community with donations of time and
money in the past and hope this 24-hour
challenge will encourage even more of our
friends and supporters to invest in their
community center.”
As a bonus, every donation made on May
6 will be matched by funds from a regional
pool of businesses and organizations.

ccording to the 2010 U.S. Census, the most recent data
available, 11,773 same-sex couples live in Oregon. According

Sacramento Pride Festival Turns 30
T
he axiom is that you should never trust anyone over 30,
but when it comes to having a good time in the sun — and
strutting your Pride — this year’s Sacramento Pride and
Parade is going to prove that wrong, with what organizrs promise
to be a bigger, better and more prideful celebration.
The 2014 Sacramento Pride Festival and
Parade will be on Saturday, June 14, and is
expanding the festival’s size by a full block,
stretching from 3rd St. to 7th St.
on Capital Mall. Some 15,000
visitors from Sacramento and
Northern California are expected
to attend the day-long event, which
is produced by and for the
Sacramento LGBT Community
Center, a non-profit organization
providing programs and services for
LGBT youth and adults.
The Festival will feature hundreds of
business and non-profit exhibitors and
attractions, including live entertainment
on two stages, a dance tent hosted by local
DJs, a family-friendly kids’ zone, animal
adoptions sponsored by Subaru and Front
Street Animal Shelter, and food trucks.
Event sponsors include long-time Pride
beverage sponsor Budweiser, Wells Fargo,
Cares Community Health, HP, Barefoot Wine
and Bubbly and Regional Transit.
Tickets are $10 per person, free for

Bill to Modernize Birth Certificates Passes Assembly
Health Committee with Bipartisan Support
The Assembly Health Committee voted April 9 to pass a bill that would modernize
California’s birth certificate system by ensuring LGBT parents can accurately record their
relationships to their children. AB 1951: “Modernizing Birth Certificates,” garnered
bipartisan support, and will next move to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
Currently, parents are required to select “Mother/Parent” and “Father/Parent;” AB 1951
would allow each parent to select “Mother,” “Father” or “Parent.”
“A child’s entry into the world should be celebrated, not marked by discrimination
against the diversity of their family,” said John O’Connor, Executive Director of bill sponsor
Equality California. “Modernizing birth certificates means the next generation will be born
into a California that treats their families with equal dignity and respect.”
AIDSWatch Organizers Honor Members of Congress for
Dedication to Ending HIV
AIDSWatch 2014 organizers is honoring two retiring members of Congress who have
been leaders in advancing public policy that helps to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the
United States.
Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA) is a leader on health and environmental issues
and Delegate Donna Christensen (D-Virgin Islands), is a strong advocate for sound,
science-based public health policies and has worked to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS in
African American communities.
“These two Members of Congress have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their
work to end the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the United States and its territories,” said Ronald
Johnson, Vice President of Policy and Advocacy for AIDS United, one of the AIDSWatch

Dr. Birx Sworn-In as New U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator
Dr. Deborah Birx was sworn in on April 4 as the new Ambassador at Large and U.S.
Global AIDS Coordinator to lead all U.S. Government international HIV/AIDS efforts.
Ambassador Birx now oversees implementation of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for
AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease
in history, as well as all U.S. Government engagement with the Global Fund to Fight
AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
“I am honored and humbled to lead PEPFAR into a brand new chapter to achieve an
AIDS-free generation through shared responsibility, accountability, and impact.” said
Ambassador Birx.
PEPFAR now directly supports 6.7 million people globally on life-saving antiretroviral
treatment. In Fiscal Year 2013, PEPFAR also supported HIV testing and counseling for
more than 57.7 million people.
Federal Judge Rules Ohio Must Respect Married Same-Sex
Couples
U.S. District Judge Timothy Black on April 14, struck down part of a constitutional
amendment in Ohio that denies gay couples the freedom to marry and withholds legal
respect for gay couples who have gotten married.
He ordered the state to treat couples married elsewhere like any other couples who
marry out of state — as married.
“Couples who are married should be treated as married no matter where they are in the
country, including Ohio,” said Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry. “Couples
should not have to play ‘now you’re married, now you’re not’ as they travel, work, move, or
return home.”
MI Sued to Recognize Marriages of Same-Sex Couples
The ACLU of Michigan filed a lawsuit on April 14 to guarantee that the marriages of
300 same-sex couples performed last month are recognized by the state. The lawsuit was
filed on behalf of eight same-sex couples who were married after a federal judge struck
down the state’s ban and before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals put the decision on
hold.
“As a matter of law and fundamental fairness, the state is obligated to extend the
protections that flow from marriage to all those who celebrated their weddings last
month,” said Kary L. Moss, ACLU of Michigan executive director.
On Friday, March 21, Judge Bernard Friedman struck down Michigan’s ban on the
freedom to marry as violating federal law. The next day, approximately 300 same-sex were
married. A few days later, Governor Rick Snyder announced that, while the marriages
were legal, the state would not recognize them.

Community Center’s new Development Director, hopes to
bring one thing to the Center that she picked up from her
previous job: the philosophy of “giving what feels right.”
“I want to create an environment where
people feel that every donation is important,
that every donation helps build a bigger and
better Center,” says Robinson, who
previously worked for four years in the
Membership Department of Capital Public
Radio. “I want people to feel proud that they
are part of the Center and what makes it
happen. I want people to know that’s how I
feel. That’s the heart of the development
program I want to create at the Center.”
Calling her new position “one of my
dream jobs,” Robinson’s optimism and
energy are contagious as she talks about her
vision for the Center. “I think the Center has
a ton of potential, and I feel honored to be
one of the people that can help us attain that
potential,” she says.
“I see the Center as a cornerstone of the
community and a community resource, and I
want to build on and expand on that
foundation.”
Established in 1986 as the Lambda
Community Center, the Sacramento LGBT
Community Center today serves a diverse
population of youth and adults, ranging from
a Girl Scout troop to a senior leaders group.
On April 23, the Center will reopen the
Q-spot resource center for queer youth. “The
Q-spot is a drop-in center that provides a
safe place for all youth between ages 13 and
22 to hang out with friends, play games,

represents parts of Monterey and San Benito
counties before returning to the Sacramento
area. In addition to her work with Capital
Public Radio, she helped with the March of
Dimes March for Babies fundraising
campaign.
Upon returning to the area after college,
Robinson got connected with the Center
through its popular 20-Somethings group in
2011, later serving as a group facilitator for a
year. A former rugby player during her college
years, Robinson currently lives in South Land
Park with partner Kait and dog Leah. A
musical theater player in her teen years, she
looks forward to finding more time to enjoy
Sacramento’s rich local theater offerings.

house of ill repute, he agrees, in exchange
for his freedom, to help the innocent Hero
win the maiden’s love.

A.C.T. Tries on The Suit
Plus Tribes in Berkeley

I don’t encourage folks to drive all the way over to the Bay Area to
attend a performance unless the productions in question merit special
attention. Neither of the two shows below has yet made it to
Sacramento, and both of them qualify as must-see theater.
The Suit
From legendary theatrical innovators Peter Brook, Marie-Hélène Estienne, and Franck
Krawczyk, The Suit is a tragic tale of betrayal and resentment adapted from the short story
of the same name by South African writer, Can Themba.
When a husband catches his wife in the arms of her lover, the lover flees but leaves his
suit behind. As her penance, the husband makes his wife treat the suit as an honored guest.
Accompanying her wherever she goes, the suit becomes a whimsical yet cruel reminder of
her infidelity. African melodies interweave with jazz standards to underscore this simple yet
surprising tale, set in Apartheid-era Johannesburg.
The Suit is described as a haunting work that integrates virtuosic musicians directly into
the action. It will play through May 18 at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theatre

Tribes
I have not seen Berkeley Rep’s production yet, but when I saw Tribes off-Broadway in
2012 I was very impressed by the complexity of Nina Raine’s play and its insight into the
world of the hearing impaired.
Never dull or preachy, this humorous drama follows Billy, a young deaf man born into a
hearing family. Raised inside the fiercely idiosyncratic and unrepentantly politically incorrect
cocoon of his parents’ house, he has adapted brilliantly to his family’s unconventional ways,
but they’ve never bothered to return the favor.
It’s not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness, that Billy finally
understands what it means to be understood.
Tribes is probably the best play on the subject of deafness since Mark Medoff’s Children of
a Lesser God, which was published in 1980. If you know anyone who is deaf or hearing
impaired, you should take him or her to see this play.
Berkeley Rep will offer at least three ASL-interpreted performances of Tribes, and their

The Return of Robyn & Royksopp

er “little monsters” can keep those over-priced
$200 tickets to Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP Tour
because I already have my $45 ticket for the
dance party of 2014 – which may also turn out to
be the concert event of 2014 – featuring Robyn and
Royksopp.
Two revolutionary electro-pop
acts from Sweden, Robyn and
Royksopp recently announced
plans to return (and reteam) this
year with a mini album and a tour
scheduled for the spring and
summer, respectively.
Do It Again is the name of the
mini album (due May 26), its first
single (due April 28) and also their
tour, which will kick off in Spain, at
the Sonar Festival.
The five track mini album serves
as an introduction to a new,
full-length Royksopp album to be
released later this year and arrives
on the heels of Robyn’s triumphant
Body Talk releases from 2010 and
2011.
The Robyn/Royksopp tour hits
the U.S. this summer, with stops
including the Hollywood Bowl in
Los Angeles on June 29 and Pier 97
in New York City on August 20.
The closest stop to Sacramento
on the Do It Again Tour is

Sexy Scarlett Johansson Is Back,
Plus Jude Law Takes It All Off

T
his month I spotlight new films featuring three of the sexiest
movie stars on the big screen – Scarlett Johansson, Jude Law,
and Tom Hardy – plus a superb little sleeper hit from India
and some classic Hollywood films back on the big screen.
Under The Skin
This strange, maddening cinematic acid
trip will mostly be remembered for star
Scarlett Johansson’s nude scenes. Those sexy
scenes are lengthy but tastefully done, and
the good news is that the always-voluptuous
Johansson has a normal body – or normal
for a movie goddess, anyway.
Johansson isn’t one of those rail-thin,
Hollywood bone wrecks we mostly see
nowadays. She has real curves, and her body
looks more like the fleshy sex symbols from
yesteryear, say Marilyn Monroe – the
ultimate sex symbol whom Johansson
sometimes resembles.
The first thing to say about Under The
Skin is that the average moviegoer is going
to hate it. The film is truly bizarre, slow, and
very repetitive. That said, Johansson is oddly
convincing as an alien who roams around
northern Scotland in a white van picking up
strange men to kill.
The way these unlucky men meet their
doom is the coolest part of Under The Skin,
and director Jonathan Glazer and his leading
lady are to be commended for trying to
make something totally “off the grid.”
Unfortunately, Under The Skin is as
frustrating as one of the great David Lynch’s
duds, and despite some arresting images,
this movie will likely not get under your
skin. It actually got on my last nerve.
Scarlett Johansson
Dom Hemingway
I don’t remember Jude Law being so buff,
but he looks pretty hunky in his latest film,
in which he appears completely nude (from
behind). More importantly, the actor’s
performance in Dom Hemingway is also
emotionally naked.
Law plays a small-time crook and recent
convict hanging with big-time mobsters, and
his role is a juicy, colorful character that the
talented actor can really sink his teeth into.
This is the best little British crime film in
many a moon, and Jude Law is on fire as
Dom Hemingway.

Equality and by donating the proceeds to MarriageEquality.org’s
#MyLoveisEqual campaign.

The “My Love is Equal” campaign partners with music artists to create music inspired by

Gay Men And Their Music Reviewed On CD
T
he ‘70s and ‘80s were a heyday for gay men in music. Even
before they were out of the closet, I was listening to hit after
hit by Elton John, Boy George and George Michael during
my high school and college years.
They say that everything old is new again,
and true talent always comes back around.
In that spirit, I have decided to take a tour
down memory lane with new releases from
some of the greatest gay male singers from
back in the day.

release, plus highlights from John’s 1973 live
show at Hammersmith Odeon and nine
newly-produced covers by current artists of
selected songs from the album.

The new campaign, called “Reform the
Platform,” reflects and builds on grassroots
pro-freedom successes already seen in
states like Nevada, Indiana, California,

The campaign is also in response to the
Republican National Committee’s post2012 election Growth and Opportunity
Project. “We do need to make sure young
people do not see the Party as totally
intolerant of alternative points of view,”
