FREE PROGRAMME!
The happy - but exhausted! - 2010
Pride Crew after the
Parade.
We don’t
mean to blow
our own trumpet,
but NW Pride
2010 was (practically) perfect! And
to prove it, we
scooped the coveted GALA award
for Community
Organisation of
the Year’...
...(practically) perfect Pride pockets precious prize!
Facing stiff competition from our good friends in TENI and Marriage Equality, we
were surprised but very pleased and proud, to bring home the NLGF GALA award.
Thanks are due to everyone who nominated us, and all our previous volunteers
who made NW Pride groovy for it’s first five years.
Nominations for the 2011 GALAs are now open at www.galas.ie. It’s a great
chance to show appreciation for people who do amazing work in the LGBT community. So vote now. We hope whoever wins the 2011 GALAs gets as much pleasure as we do from ours.
Our Best Bits...
2006: Our first Parade. The wettest BBQ ever (it never
rains now we bring a tent).
2007: Workhouse Studio’s Carnivale rocks The Mall!
Mayor Declan Bree welcomes Pride.
2008: Impromptu drumming and Lissadell.
2009:Sambanana
& ‘Easkey (pop. 250) goes Gay for the
2009:
Day’.
2010:Youth
Explosion. Phenomenal Parade. Our GALA!
2010:
And every year,
Dave Dellow’s perfect Pride pics!
Our PRO & Chair
show their delight at
the 2010 GALAs.
Trans in the
Northwest?
A new Transgender support group is
starting in the Northwest area:
Transgender Affirmative Action Group Northwest: TAAG-NW.
The main purpose is to create interaction & support for the transgender
community in the northwest and to accept and give support to all the other
people under the umbrella of gender diversity. No discrimination here!
TAAG-NW are in the
planning stage: meeting dates & activities
will be anounced in
due time. We’d appreciate you letting your
friends or groups
know that we are welcoming everybody:
pass the word on!

We have tried to use venues with the best access
we can find. Access issues are included in our listings. If
you know about a problem not listed, please contact us. Access information will be updated on our website
www.northwestpride.wordpress.com
Thanks to our friends at Greenbow we will have an
ISL interpreter on Friday night for our Table Quiz &
Karaoke. Deaf and hearing Brainiacs and Divas take note!
Suggestions are welcome for ways to improve Access For All
at this event or others, contact as above. We want to make
this a great night for all, your help is welcome.
Saturday’s Parade route is reasonably level (some accessible transport available, see above). Unfortunately
we have no ISL interpreter. Our volunteers will be glad to help
with any problem you may have. They will have training in access awareness and sighted guiding. Some have also done
Deaf Awareness Training. If you are lost or stuck, make
sure you have Isolde’s number saved. Call or text
and someone will come and get you back on track.
Our Big Moment comes when we all sing ‘Somewhere Over
the Rainbow’ after the Parade. Funnily, most of seem to
know all the words! If you don’t, they are easy to get. Divas of
all genders and persuasions are welcome to belt it out in their own language, whether English, Irish, ISL,
Polish or Klingon!
Don’t be afraid to ask any
volunteer for help or information:
This Pride is Our Pride!
Butterflies & bubbles
at this year’s Parade!
The best thing about any Pride is the Parade. It’s our
chance to show off and shine. In previous years
we’ve all enjoyed the Carnivale of Workhouse Studios. This year they’re unavailable so step in artist
Sherrie Scott. She promises ‘big waves of laughter’
when her inflatable butterflies hit the street. Special
Pride bubbles will of course be available!
Volunteer performers are still needed, so if you love
the limelight & are game for a laugh, contact
[email protected] for details of your
chance to shine. Individualists who want to do their
own creative thing are warmly welcomed.
Embrace the theme or disregard it, as you see fit.
This is your Parade & no-one’s the boss of you!
Workshops in costume and banner-making are
available if there’s sufficient interest. Get in touch:
workshops and other updates will be on our website
www.northwestpride.wordpress.com.
We also need stewards, to keep everyone safe and

Young? LGBT?
In the North West?
Last year over 30 young LGBT people from
BeLonG To and the National Network of
LGBT Youth Services attended Northwest
Pride. It was a highlight of the year for some
of these young people and also the first time
that any Pride in Ireland included a specific
Youth Programme of events.
This year promises to be even better. There
will be Youth Activities throughout the weekend: DIY Publishing with Ariel Silvera, Deaf
Awareness Training and Basic Irish Sign
Language with Greenbow Deaf LGBT Group
and Theatre of the Oppressed with Isolde Carmody. All of these are on Friday. On Saturday morning, we'll be preparing for the Parade, when BeLonG
To members will be carnival dancing and National Network groups will participate in their own individual ways. If the sun shines, we'll follow that with
a barbecue and later a battle of the youth bands/performances/disco in an
alcohol-free youth venue. For Sunday we are currently planning seaside activities, maybe a Beach Barbeque for those who have time!
Youth Events are open to all
LGBT young people from
Sligo, Mayo & surrounding
counties between the ages
of 14-23 & are strictly alcohol-free.

Backstory...In the summer of ‘69
In the summer of 1969, Pride as we know it was born when some gay New
Yorkers made a stand against a police raid at a popular gay bar in the Village.
Back then, gay bars were regularly raided. But on Friday June 27th, 1969, the
day of Judy Garland's funeral, patrons of The Stonewall Inn had had enough.
During the raid, 400 patrons gathered outside and watched officers arrest the bartender, the doorman and a number of customers, including Trans activist Sylvia Ray
Rivera. Something that night ignited years of anger at the way gay people were
treated. The crowd grew to 2000 strong. Chants of “Gay Power!” echoed in the
streets. Soon beer bottles and trash cans were flying. More police arrived and tried
to beat the crowd away, but angry protesters fought back.
By 4am, it was over. 13 people were arrested and four police officers injured. At
least 2 rioters were said to be severely beaten by the police and many more were
injured. The next night. an even larger crowd of protesters rioted outside the
Stonewall Inn until a riot squad arrived to disperse the crowd. On the following
Wednesday, 1000 returned to continue the protest and march on Christopher Street.
A movement had begun.
Stonewall was a
pivotal moment in
the fight against
discrimination.
The
following
year, a march was
organised on the
anniversary and 5000 to 10000 men and
women attended. In honour of Stonewall,
many Pride celebrations around the world are
held during the month of June, including New
York's and Dublin's.
In 2011, in many parts of the world, Pride Parades still banned, and in others, participants
are in danger of attack. Support these Prides
however you can - messages of support are
always welcome!
Fun, sun & sport (of a kind)...
Forget the London
Olympics, it’s the NW
Pride BBQ where wellythrowing, beach bowling
and lesbian human
pyramid attempts are
the order of the day. All
this and burgers too!
Plus free transport from
our Pride Village (donations gratefully accepted!).
More adventurous
types, out blowkiting (or
whatever) with Wet &
Wild, will join us
deckchair-potatoes later
to raise the (muscle)
tone of the afternoon.
Volunteers are needed
for this event too. If you
are an expert BBQ chef
or a budding Games
Mistress, now is your
moment! Email [email protected]
Please note!
BBQ GOES AHEAD
REGARDLESS OF
WEATHER
(we’re tough
out here in
the sticks)
and shelter
will be
provided!
Aries - March 21 to April 20 - "I am"
Get ready for romance and adventure as the stars shine all the brighter. Fate takes a willing hand and you could
even meet the person of your dreams. Keep an open mind and heart if you want to grow. At work, don't entertain
the whims of time-waters and begrudger's, there little more then a distraction from your higher goals. Be productive, and channel your efforts well. You can climb high!
Taurus - April 21 to May 21 - "I possess"
Now is a terrific time to start networking and tapping into your own resources. If done properly you could very well
combine business and pleasure for a far brighter future. You have many talents that are going unrecognised,
don't sell yourself short. Hobbies are a key to your true passions. Explore what really makes you happy. Relationships can be in a tough place at the moment but working through.
Gemini - May 22 to June 21 - "I think”
A creative venture can get the go-ahead right now. It would be wise to adopt a money-making and budget strategy to work towards for upcoming plans. When in love, don't let something silly come between you and your
beloved. Words can’t always undo pain but they can help ease it. Family strength comes from sticking together
so put aside some long held frustrations and let yourself succeed.
Cancer - June 22 to July 22 - "I feel"
Have you taken time to de-stress lately? Channel out the mundane frustrations and annoyances in your life? If
not now would be a terrific time to. Why let the steam build when you can work though the mess right now. Take
the time to banish self doubts as this will not only open new doors of deeper intimacy but will put you in a place of
personal power. Ask for the support you need and deserve._
Leo - July 23 to Aug 23 - "I shine"
Open the lines of communication and direct expression with work, especially when dealing with office politics and
strong personalities. The best way to win the game is by simply not playing it. You may not have noticed it yet but
you’re very much at a crossroads in your life, what happens now will matter greatly in what direction your future
will take. Think, but use your heart to make the choices.
Virgo - Aug 24 to Sept 22 - "I critique"
The Jupitarian flow is very much in the focus of your sign. Things are about to start moving forward quickly with
luck and love very much on your side. With work and employment, think quick and act quicker, unique and
blessed opportunities are on their way. Take a chance with romance and don't be afraid to truly let someone in.
Sometimes the cruellest person in our life, is ourselves.
Libra - Sept 23 to Oct 23 - "I choose"
For the next while passion is your key to success. Focus on things and directions that fill you with energy and a
sense of movement. It can carry you far. Right now spirituality and romance are very much entwined. You know
what you want and how to get it. What exactly are you waiting for? Act. Follow your instincts and gut feeling and
the rest will take care of themselves. Live a bit louder. Dance.
Scorpio - Oct 24 to Nov 22 - "I desire"
The stars are aligned for you at the moment meaning doors are opening and fresh opportunities are presenting
themselves. Be sure to break the cycle in which you are living. Life may be long at times but it is far too short to
be lived with such tight boundaries. Be a bit brave and brazen, live for the moment. Family concerns need talking
about as hiding from a situation does not make it go away.
Sagittarius - Nov 23 to Dec 21 - "I aspire"
Right now you’re in the right place at the right time for something terrific. Prepare yourself to mix with influential
circles and have a far deeper impact on others then usual. Take the chances that come your way as social and
work invitations are providing you with new introductions to interesting and important people. Be sure to take
care of yourself along the way though, be kind to yourself.
Capricorn - Dec 22 to Jan 20 - "I build"
Dreams are not just meant to be dreamt, they are made to be lived and life is giving you a rare opportunity to
gain new heights and find new horizons. You need only to trust in yourself and your capabilities. You win over the
gaze of an attractive stranger, be sure to find out if their intentions are sincere as you’re more then a prize. An old
act of kindness will bring a timely and much needed reward.
Aquarius - Jan 21 to Feb 18 - "I know"
Romance is very much in your stars right now. Keep an eye out for the sparks. While they may entertain at times
and help keep you warm, so much friction can bring a make it or break it time. You are in control of your own life,
take responsibility and let the upcoming new dawn be a very welcomed one. Travel is in your chart right now, try
somewhere new. It will be good for the mind and soul.
Pisces - Feb 19 to March 20 -"I care"
Now is a time to be both practical and passion filled. You can wait for your ship to come in or you can swim out to
meet it. Don't limit yourself with low expectations or the undermining of your talents and abilities. You can do
more. Know where your line in the sand is and what you will and will not accept. Your current worries are transitional, the stars suggest you relax and let life deal with it.
