Conference Chair’s Welcome
Welcome to the 2016 CMEA Bay Section Winter Conference. Thank you
for your commitment to music education by choosing to attend the conference. We can all agree that these are uncertain times for so many educators;
for this reason, I recognize how each of you is dedicated to providing your
students and your communities with the highest level of education in the
arts. Your tireless and sincere efforts are commendable. Thank you for all
that you do.
The Bay Section Conference is a terrific opportunity for each of us to not
only recharge our “teaching batteries” while attending the vast array of
sessions that are presented at conference but it is also an opportunity to
connect with colleagues we see regularly as well as those that we rarely
get a chance to see. In addition, Bay Section veteran educators have the
opportunity to mentor our newest teachers into our community of
advocacy. I hope that you will all be able to go back into your classrooms on Monday morning feeling
recharged with new philosophies to ponder as well as strategies that you can begin to implement.
The conference would not be possible without the efforts of your Bay Section Special Representatives,

working diligently to provide you with sessions that are sure to be inspirational and educational.
Special thanks to our host, Tim Harris of Chabot College and to the students of Chabot for all of their
work preparing for and working at the conference. We are most appreciative for their warm hospitality and
dedicated service.
On behalf of the Bay Section Board I’d like to invite everyone to join us at the Wine & Cheese Reception
being held off site at the Hayward Area Historical Society (22380 Foothill Blvd., Hayward, 94541) on
Friday, January 8th from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. There is both street parking and two small lots available.
The Wine & Cheese is an annual tradition and is generously hosted by Ashli Rulien of J.W. Pepper.
Please be sure to visit the vendors, located in the Art Gallery (room 1002) and registration breezeway. I’d also
like to encourage you to attend the concerts in the Performing Arts Center presented by the Conference High
School Jazz Band on Friday at 3:00 p.m. under the direction of Dr. Steve Roach and Junior High School Concert Band (under the direction of Kara Ravina), Choir (under the direction of Lou De La Rosa) and Orchestra
(under the direction of Kate Francis) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
This year the Bay Section Conference program will feature a QR code for each of the sessions. When the

Using and Understanding the
New CMEA Jazz Performance
and Sight Reading Evaluation
and Score Sheets
Band
This year there are big changes to how groups are being
evaluated at all CMEA Bay Section festivals. This roundtable style discussion will focus on presenting the changes made to CMEA Jazz Festival evaluations that include a
focus on style, improvisation, feel, and sight reading. We
encourage all members who attend CMEA Jazz Festivals
to attend this session to become better informed about
the new adjudication system to better prepare students
for festival performances. Please bring your questions!

Terri Knight, San Ramon Unified School District
Creating and supporting young oboe players is an important part of the job for band directors. Join Terri Knight
as she demonstrates techniques for helping start young
oboe players in your band. A focus of this clinic will be
on helping switch students to oboe from another instrument. Leave with ideas, resources, and encouragement
to begin building stronger double reed players at your
school. From selecting the best students to “switch”,
choosing instruments and reeds, and developing good
fundamentals for a characteristic tone, this is a clinic not
to be missed.
Electronics In Live Music
Dr. Eric Schultz, Chabot College
This session will focus on the use of live electronics in
performance. Case studies will include a demonstration
of the electronics for Mason Bates’ “Chicago 2012” for
band, in which pre-made sound files are played during
the performance. The playback controllers of Ableton
Live will be showcased.

As CMEA is advocating to rework state laws around
mandates for music education, it’s time to begin conversations with your school board, administrators, and community around building your music program, K-12. This
workshop will focus on what music education should
look like and how to advocate for a strong educational
model. Common Core implementation, Cross-Curricular education, and addressing a diversity of needs will
be built into this model. Expand your elementary music
program with lessons that reach across the curriculum
and grade levels. We’ll bridge the gap for our secondary
students whom have missed years of education in music.

CMEA Bay Section Choral Representative
CMEA Bay Section will be rolling out the new Choral
Festival performance evaluations and score sheets at
this season’s festivals. This session will explain the scale,
classification process, and new score sheets. Attendees
will have the opportunity to apply the evaluation scale
to several examples. New proposed sight reading procedures, evaluation scale, and score sheet will also be introduced. There will be ample time for questions on both
of these topics.

You’ve Got Your Keys –
Now What?

This interactive presentation offers simple classroom
management tools for your teaching toolbox to help
you through those first years of teaching. Topics include
setting yourself up for success with procedures and routines, behavior interventions specifically designed for the
music classroom, and resources for daily application.
This session will invigorate your love for teaching with
new strategies for success that you can use tomorrow.
The Laptop Orchestra
Dr. Bruno Ruviaro, Santa Clara University
Laptop Orchestras are a fun mix of performance ensemble, electronic music classroom, and research platform. As
an ensemble, students create original compositions and
perform them electronically, with the goal of presenting
a public concert at the end of the term. As a classroom
environment, laptop orchestra students are constantly
learning novel digital tools for musical expression (software and hardware), as well as familiarizing themselves
with electronic music theory as it directly relates to practice. Finally, as a research platform, the laptop orchestra
introduces students to cutting edge tools and topics of
investigation in the field of computer music. Based on
the experience of SCLOrk (the Santa Clara Laptop Orchestra, created in 2012), this session will demonstrate
musical compositions, software and hardware tools, and
teaching strategies commonly used.

Steven Hendee, Castro Valley High School
Bring your instrument and play as Steven Hendee directs this year’s Reading Band. New and classic repertoire
will be featured along side music with a twist, “novelties”
that you might not hear during a typical reading session.
Serious musicians are welcome, but be sure to bring your
sense of humor and maybe a whistle, quack or a honk.

Keith Terry, Director of Crosspulse and
the International Body Music Festival
Using the oldest instrument on the planet – the human
body – we clap, slap, snap, step and vocalize our way
through some very fun and funky, original and traditional rhythmic music. “Body Music” is an effective
way of internalizing rhythmic work, which enhances the
development of time, timing, phrasing, listening skills,
independence, coordination, and ensemble awareness.
We will explore a variety of rhythmic systems and concepts from around the world, including polyrhythms,
crosspulses, polymeters, phasing, half time/double time,
and more. It is a useful tool for musicians, dancers and
movers of all kinds, actors, DJs, and film editors – anyone interested in deepening their rhythmic skills. Wear
comfortable clothing and clean sneakers or jazz shoes.

Clarinet Fusion: Improving
Musicianship Section By Section
Karyn Weber and Clarinet Fusion
Clarinet Fusion, a San Francisco Bay Area clarinet choir,
presents a workshop on developing musicianship in your
clarinet section from top to bottom. These techniques can
be applied to all sections of your band. Demonstrations
will include short excerpts of pieces designed to improve
sound, articulation, musicality, blend, balance, and intonation. Clarinet Fusion will also share strategies to keep
your lower voices engaged, and a list fun of pieces to encourage growth from all players. Be sure to check out
their lunch time performance in the Grand Courtyard.

Ms. Drury is currently the Orchestra Director at Dougherty Valley HS and Windemere Ranch MS in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. The Dougherty Valley
HS Chamber Orchestra, appearing here today is part of a
large, thriving music department at DVHS. This year in
addition to their appearances at sessions at the CMEA Bay
Section Conference and at ASMEC, the DVHS Chamber Orchestra’s performances include a lobby performance
prior to an Oakland Symphony concert at the Paramount
Theater in Oakland. Their year will culminate with a performance at Carnegie Hall. Music for this reading session is
graciously furnished by Ashli Rulien of J.W. Pepper.
Intro To Jazz Improv:
A Hands On Approach!
Dr. Aaron Lington,
San José State University
Teaching students about jazz improvisation is a challenge
for many, especially for teachers that have limited
experience. This session focuses on providing teachers of
all levels with a basic approach to teaching jazz improvisation in an ensemble setting, using a handful of jazz
standards and live demonstrations. The basics of important
elements including melody, harmony, rhythm, style, and
intent will also be addressed. Attendees are encouraged
to bring their instruments and participate in the
session!

Poetic Calculations:
East Indian Rhythms For the
American Music Classroom
Jim Santi Owen,
Park Day School and Ali Akbar College of Music
For thousands of years, India’s percussion traditions
have nurtured the perfect marriage of mathematics and
poetry – “beautiful calculations.” Indian drummers recite
quick-tongued, vocal percussion syllables through the
onomatopoeic languages of India’s many drums. These
syllables and the math on which they are based guide the
students toward an embodied understanding of complex
rhythmic concepts. Through reciting, clapping, singing,
and stomping, this workshop will show how traditional Indian rhythms can be used in the American music
classroom as a powerful tool for rhythmic training and
igniting your students’ musical creativity.

In this presentation Dr. Nick Vasallo will discuss his
approach to teaching both music majors and non-music
majors the fundamentals of digital music production. He
will describe both the macro and micro structure of his
introductory courses in an 18-week semester. Subjects
of focus will be: MIDI, Digital Audio, external synths,
VSTs, composition, music theory for computer musicians, TML (Technology Mediated Learning), and various pedagogical approaches.

How will you get through this and survive? “I’ve never
taught band!” “I’ve never taught choir!” “I’ve never taught
algebra!” This round table discussion will feature two long
time veteran teachers who have experienced the same situations, as well as a younger teacher new to the profession
dealing with these issues now. Join our panel for a lively
discussion on what they did to make the best of the situation. Questions, group discussion, and sharing to follow.

A session focused on new and standard repertoire that is
accessible for jazz ensembles at all levels. Information on
instrument ranges, difficulty of each piece, in addition to
resources for finding new jazz literature will be presented.

tomorrow.” String Repair For
Band and Orchestra Directors
Patrick Heaney, Ben Richard, Heaney Violins
Patrick is the owner of Heaney Violins in Mountain
View. A student of bow making, restoration, and rehair
with Lynn Armour Hannings and also violin restoration
with Hans J. Nebel, Patrick has been providing bow rehair and repair services for the St. Lawrence String Quartet workshop since 2005 and is a mainstay in the violin
repair and restoration community. Prior to opening his
own shop, Partick apprenticed with Hideo Kamimoto at
Kamimoto Violins for ten years, specializing in violin set
up, restoration, and repair. He was also manager of the
string department at West Valley Music for five years.
In his spare time, he is studying cello with Irene Sharp
and formerly studied violin with the late Jenny Rudin.
Ben Richard is a graduate of The University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and performs professionally as a violist while maintaining regular hours at
Heaney Violins.

The Jazz & Democracy Project® (J&D) utilizes jazz as
a metaphor to cultivate a profound understanding of
American democratic ideals. J&D brings American
democracy to life, enriches the study and teaching of
U.S. history, government, civics and culture, and inspires youth to become active, positive contributors to
their communities. J&D founder, “Dr. Wes”, will share
insights on the power of metaphor, integrating the arts at
levels that artists themselves find enlightening, and how
teaching students about the jazz process/aesthetic, is to
teach them about the democratic process.

Dr. Steve Roach
Steve has been the Director of Jazz Studies at Sacramento State University
since 2001. He has also served as Director of Jazz Studies at Baylor University and has held teaching positions at the University of Northern Colorado
and Northern Illinois University. Steve’s duties at Sacramento State include
directing large jazz ensembles, teaching jazz trumpet, administering the jazz
studies degree program, and teaching courses in jazz history.
He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance from Indiana
University, a Master of Music degree in trumpet performance from Northern Illinois University, and a Doctor of Arts degree in trumpet and jazz
pedagogy from the University of Northern Colorado.
Professional appearances as an assisting artist include studio and live sessions with such jazz and pop musicians as Tito Puente, Dave Pietro, Louis
Bellson, Billy Drummond, Alan Ferber, Conrad Herwig, Lou Rawls, Jon Tchicai, Ben Vereen, Melissa Manchester, Toni Tennille, Roberta Flack, Rosemary Clooney, Jeffrey Osbourne, Carl Fontana, Paquito D’Rivera,
The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, The Glenn Miller and Jimmy Dorsey Orchestras, and others.
Steve also works as a clinician and adjudicator for jazz festivals and various workshops nationwide and
has directed several California high school honor jazz ensembles including the San Mateo Honor Jazz Band,
the Fresno-Madera County Honor Jazz Band, the Solono County High School Honor Jazz Ensemble,
the Tulare Kings County Honor Jazz Band and the Southern California Band and Orchestra Association
Honor Jazz Band.
Steve maintains an active schedule as a freelance artist and is a member of the Sacramento Jazz Orchestra,
a group which he co-founded.

Singing is a natural road into music education for older
beginners, but it can be a daunting task for teachers to
choose meaningful repertoire and beginning songs and
activities that will build enthusiasm among students.
Julie Haydon and Rita Alway will present a collection
of accessible songs and skill-building activities for upper
elementary, middle school, and early high school students, that has been successful in their work teaching
music in Oakland schools where students previously had
little singing or general music experience. This interactive
session will also provide helpful ideas for instrumental
music teachers who find themselves teaching in a choral
or general music setting.

The public school student population is a richly multicultural canvas in which dozens of world languages are
spoken. Instrumental music is not equitably reaching
all of our students. We have to think outside the box in
order to engage our students with high caliber music
education. In this workshop we will explore several different ways to overcome obstacles by using culturally
specific music and instruments as well as cross-cultural
instruction. This workshop will include opportunities
to share your ideas and experiences and explore ways to
implement these ideas in your school or district.

Come hear veteran teachers discuss what it takes to create and sustain a successful band program. The panel is
made up of three outstanding high school directors with
a vast array of experience and knowledge. This format
will allow the panel members to discuss their values as
music educators, how they handle the challenges of the
profession, and outline the critical steps to building a
great band program
Jazz articulations are an important component to performing as a jazz artist. In this session, trumpeter Steve
Roach discusses some of the obstacles that brass players
are dealing with beyond the technical demands of their
music and offers approaches on how to improve phrasing
and tonguing that will help them as soloists and section
players.

a Strong Foundation In Basic

Dr. Jennifer Miyahira Townsend
This will be a crash course in the basics of cello playing – from posture, left and right hand position, to bow
strokes, shifting, vibrato, and thumb position. She will
also show how to troubleshoot common problems. Dr.
Miyahira Townsend has 15 years of teaching experience
and holds a Doctoral degree in cello performance from
Northwestern University. She has studied with Maestro
Robert LaMarchina, Hans Jorgen Jensen, the late Allen
Trubitt, and Janice Trubitt. Jennifer was born and raised
in Honolulu, Hawaii and is a graduate of Punahou High
School. Jennifer taught cello at the New Mozart School
of Music in Palo Alto for the last eight years.

Porter leads this session with tips on how to strengthen
your developing jazz ensemble. The session incorporates
singing, time and feel, listening, strategies for playing
changes, transcribing, and strategies for getting the shy
improvisers to jump in!
This presentation will show how mindfulness can be
effectively incorporated into an orchestra rehearsal. He
will be touching briefly upon what mindfulness is and
how mindfulness practices and goals overlap significantly
with musical ones. Then he will discuss a number of concrete mindfulness strategies that can be incorporated into
all stages of the rehearsal process, in order to help you
and your ensemble members be fully present at your rehearsal from the moment they arrive until they walk out
the door. This is a 50 minute session.

“Right note at right time with good tone and in tune”…
heard this before?... teach that way?…want more for your
students?…and more satisfaction from your job? If so,
come along and listen to this continuation of last year’s
presentation (“Beyond the Baton”) in exploring ways to
identify and practice practical skills for teaching comprehensive musicianship in large ensemble settings. This session will include video examples of superior teaching from
directors throughout the Western United States who foster
a deep, lifelong involvement with music for their students
and gain satisfaction in that accomplishment – all within
the traditional performance orientation.

classification process, and new score sheets. Attendees

to several examples. New proposed sight reading procedures, evaluation scale, and score sheet will also be introduced. There will be ample time for questions on both
of these topics.

Lou De La Rosa
Lou De La Rosa is the Director of Choral and Vocal Studies at the Bill &
Leila Cilker School of Art and Design at West Valley College where he
conducts the Chamber Singers and College Chorale. He has taught music
in San José, California for over thirty years, thirteen of which were at Abraham Lincoln High School, a performing arts magnet. Mr. De La Rosa’s
choirs have performed throughout the United States and Europe and have
won first place in choral competitions across the United States.
Lou De La Rosa was named Teacher of the Year at his schools in 1991 and
2002, and in 2010 the West Valley College Academic Senate honored him
with two Faculty Excellence Awards. Mr. De La Rosa has served on the
Board of Directors of multiple professional organizations including CMEA
Bay Section, and presently serves as President for the California chapter of
the American Choral Directors Association.
Mr. De La Rosa has conducted numerous festival and honor choirs throughout California and Nevada. In
addition, he has guest conducted The Santa Clara Chorale, The Winchester Orchestra, and the San José State
University Choraliers in concert with The Rolling Stones on their May 2013 U.S. tour. He prepared the Symphony Silicon Valley Chorale for the West Coast premiere in San José of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, with
250 musicians performing the musical soundtrack to live projection of the movies in two cycles over four days.
As guest chorusmaster of the Symphony Silicon Valley Chorale in a March 2014 performance of “Carmina
Burana”, his work garnered the following review by San Francisco Classical Voice: “The choruses outstripped
even the soloists in awesomeness. The SSV Chorale…guest-directed by Lou De La Rosa…enunciated its lyrics
with a clarity that overwhelmed its position far off at the back of the stage… All parts of the choir were superb.”
Mr. De La Rosa is the happily married father of three daughters, all of whom were raised as musicians and
lifelong fans of the World Champion San Francisco Giants.

Kate Francis
Bay Area native Kate Francis grew up in Lafayette and holds a Bachelor of
Music in string pedagogy and viola performance from the University of
Michigan and a Master’s degree in viola performance from San Francisco
State University. It was natural for Ms. Francis to become a music teacher,
as both of her parents are music teachers. Kate has taught grades K-12
orchestra throughout the Bay Area with most of her time at Lincoln Performing Arts High School and Mill Valley Middle School. Kate is currently
the Director of Orchestras at R.J. Fisher Middle School in Los Gatos.
In 2009 Kate was the recipient of a Fullbright-Hays scholarship where
she traveled throughout Mexico, studying Mexican folk music. In 2015,
Ms. Francis was awarded the Richard L. Levin Orchestra Educator of the
Year by CMEA.
Aside from teaching, Kate is an active violist in the Bay Area and is Past-President for the California Orchestra
Directors Association.
When not trying to take over the world through orchestra, Kate loves reading The Week, doing crosswords,
watching “Jeopardy” and spending time with her wonderful husband Nathan and their two-year old son
Thomas.

Kara Ravina
Kara Ravina has been teaching elementary, middle, and high school band
and orchestra for the past fifteen years, and is currently a 2015 quarterfinalist for the GRAMMY Foundation’s Teacher of the Year award.
Mrs. Ravina is the Director of Instrumental Music at Las Lomas High
School, in Walnut Creek, California. Under her direction, the bands and
orchestra have received top ratings at numerous festivals including CMEA
festivals, the Campana Jazz Festival, Folsom Jazz Festival, and the Reno Jazz
Festival. In addition to local and regional festivals, Mrs. Ravina’s students
also participate in international travel, including a 2014 trip to the eastern
coast of Spain.
Mrs. Ravina is a 2001 graduate of California State University in Hayward,
where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s degree in trumpet
performance and an emphasis in music education. While at CSUH, she had the privilege of studying trumpet
with Mr. Jay Rizzetto, and music education methods with Mr. Tim Smith and Dr. Ann Porter. She was also
mentored in jazz by Mr. Dave Eshelman. As a member of multiple jazz ensembles, she has performed with
Allen Vizzutti, Bobby Shew, Gerald Wilson, Ayn Inserto, Maria Schnieder, and the late Louis Bellson and Bob
Brookmeyer.
An advocate for self-guided learning, Mrs. Ravina spends a good deal of time in the classroom teaching her
students to be leaders in their ensembles and to be passionate about making their own musical choices. Her
students take these skills with them as they participate in ensembles outside of the school setting, including
CBDA All-State Ensembles, Contra Costa County Honor Ensembles, SFJazz, JazzSchool Studio Band, Diablo
Wind Symphony, and the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra.
When she is not teaching, Mrs. Ravina spends time with her husband Jason (music director at Pleasanton
Middle School), and their two young children, Jacob and Emily. The Ravina’s are avid SF Giants fans, and love
playing disc golf and being active outdoors.
