First day of school! - Ward`s Island Clubhouse
Volume 100, Issue 6 OCTOBER 2014 First day of school! OCTOBER EVENTS Islanders Billie and Izzy with their friend Piper on the first day of school at the Island Public School. Other first-timers were Elliot, Tyler, Kai and Elsie. WIA Annual General Meeting & Volunteer Dinner Sunday, October 19 AGM at 3 p.m. Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at 6 p.m. Once again, the dinner will be catered by Anne Hynes and Mark Howard, with sweet assistance from Stephanie Smith. If you volunteered for ANY WIA event or activity this season, come and partake of your just desserts. Like the sign says: Don’t Cook, Just Eat! Oct. 5 Blessing of Bikes and Pets Oct 5 Emergency First Aid Oct. 5 WIA Executive Nomination deadline Oct. 5 Volunteer Dinner Oct. 19 WIA AGM Oct. 25 Hallowe’en Dance President’s Notes If you’d told me back in, say, 2008, that I’d serve four years on the WIA executive, I would’ve said “No way!” If you’d told me that I’d spend two of those years as President of the WIA I would’ve spit out my coffee. Yet here I am four years on, and it’s truly been a blast. I’ve worked with some wonderful people, many of whom I wouldn’t have gotten to know otherwise. Now, as I head out for those calmer pastures known as the land of Past Presidents, some random musings… With the deadline for nominations for the 2015 executive fast approaching, I should launch into the annual rah-rah speech urging you to step up to the plate and serve your community, assuring you that being on the executive is a barrel of laughs. Sometimes it really IS a barrel of laughs, because Islanders are fun to be around and great to work with. But running the WIA is a major commitment of time and energy (ditto for serving on the AIA executive, TICA, the Shaw House board, etc.). A lot of the work of maintaining our community organizations is invisible. It just seems to happen – that is, until you actually take on one of the jobs and 2014 WIA Executive President Past-President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer Membership chair Events chair Clubhouse co-chair Clubhouse co-chair Tennis co-chair Tennis co-chair Lawn bowling chair WIA Weekly Team Kathleen McDonnell Bruce Rosensweet Your Name Here? I worry that we’re getting to a point of volunteer burnout here on the Island. We’re an aging community. A lot of us feel like we’ve done our bit. I think we need some fresh thinking in this department. One option is for Island organizations to pool resources and hire more paid staff. The WIA and AIA took a small step in this direction this season: We jointly hired an Event Co-ordinator to do bookings and oversee private events for both clubhouses. It’s an experiment that will be evaluated at the end of the season, but I’m personally convinced that this is the overall direction we need to go. We could consider streamlining the work of maintaining our island buildings. Instead of separate executives and boards of directors, why not manage them under a single governing body, with a paid Superintendent of Buildings. (Then, when a toilet’s plugged, we’ll all know who to call!) Currently our community buildings are funded through membership fees and income from various sources. The problem with that model is that it’s a lot of work chasing down and collecting those member fees. Many people just don’t bother to join, or are missed by the hardworking Block Captains. But the reality is that the whole community benefits from our clubhouses. We really could not get along without them. So here’s another heretical thought: No more general memberships. Instead we figure out what it really costs to maintain our community buildings and organizations and add it to the annual Trust Levy. (Don’t all spit out your coffee at once!) While I’m on the subject of income sources, a word about rentals: The core purpose of the WIA has always been to serve as a gathering place for the community. That includes everything from our own WIA dances, the Island Public School BBQs, the Grannies in Spirit House & History tour, the Animal Clinic, the Terry Fox Run, and more. But private rentals are a big part of the mix. This season we’ve hosted 13 private weekend events (mostly weddings) and a dozen weekday events (mostly corporate picnics), and we’ve been working hard to put that part of the operation on a responsible, businesslike footing. Noise is a perennial issue on the Island, and a fair portion of it is generated right here in our midst – at WIA, AIA and QCYC events, particularly in the summer high season. I don’t think anyone seriously proposes that the WIA should end private rentals – for one thing, it would leave a grand historic building empty for most days of the summer. Rentals are not only a major source of income, they’re a great way for us to engage with the mainland and promote goodwill for our community – something that, in my estimation, we should never take for granted. For generations, we’ve been creating something remarkable on this Island, and I think we should be proud to tell our story and share our community buildings with the rest of the world. I hope to see you all at the clubhouse on Sunday October 19 for the WIA Annual General Meeting, starting at 3 p.m. We need a quorum of 25 people. Come for the thrill of reading the draft 2015 budget! Stick around for the fabulous Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and the presentation of sports trophies and awards. Despite all I’ve said above, the hotly anticipated announcement of the recipient of the 2014 Art Gay Community Service Award will show that volunteerism is alive and well on the Island! – Kathleen McDonnell 2 Emergency First Aid A one-day course There are still a few spaces in the Emergency First Aid / CPR / AED course on Sunday October 5 from 1-5:30 p.m. at the clubhouse. Nomination forms are in an envelope posted on the main clubhouse door. Completed forms and notices of motion can be deposited there or delivered in person to the Little Clubhouse on Oct. 5 between 2 and 3 p.m. Men’s singles finals competitors Shepherd Zambonelli and Cameron Saunders 3 Request for quotes City of Toronto Parks, through Warren Hoselton, has generously offered us six park benches for placement in Willow Square in front of the WIA clubhouse. There is one in use now, directly in front of the clubhouse, and appears to be a good match with both the clubhouse and the still to-be-installed Landing Stage. These benches have been in use for many years, but are still in good shape. We would like them to last a lot longer, maintenancefree, and to that end are requesting quotes for the scraping, sanding and painting of the wood slats and the metal framework. They will also need to be permanently installed in the concrete pavers once the work has been completed. The remaining benches can be delivered to the Square at any time. Anyone with experience in this kind of work is asked to please contact Kathleen Doody at [email protected] for more details and/or with a quote. Deadline for quotes is Friday, October 17. The quote will be for time and materials: •Clean, scrape and sand all painted surfaces, removing all loose and bubbling paint. •Replace all parts of the wooden slats that are rotten. •Paint all surfaces with a high quality exterior paint in a colour specified by us. •Scrape and sand the metal surfaces, removing any rust and loose paint. •Enlarge the holes in the metal feet if necessary to accept the bolts for attaching the benches to the concrete. •Paint all the metal with a high quality exterior antirust paint. •Install the benches in the Square in the positions indicated by us. •Liaise with us throughout the process. Thank you, – Jerry, Kathleen and Penny In memory of Bob Knebel Bob passed away peacefully at his home in Mississauga on September 18, 2014. He was 74. He is greatly missed by the family of his sister Betty. Especially her children and grandchildren were very fond of “Uncle Bob.” Bob was a chemical engineer from McGill University; he worked most of his life for Domtar and subsequent companies. Bob and three of his university friends (Don, Peter and Jim) came to Ward’s Island in 1965 where they purchased the cottage at 18 Channel Avenue. They enjoyed their summers 4 there immensely and made many friends, all of whom will remember Bob fondly. He was a big man with a big heart and a big laugh. Bob was an active member of the WIA tennis club. He also enjoyed heli-skiing in B.C. In the late eighties the cottage was sold to Lynn Harpell. A funeral mass was held on September 27, 2014 at St. Martin of Tours Parish in Mississauga. In his later years Bob devoted much time as a valued resource person at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Centre in Pickering. Those who knew him will miss him. – Martin ter Woort A Celebration ... Starting next issue, and into the AIA newsletter, there will be a guest column entitled “Animal Tailes”. OWL BE WATCHING Linda Wilson at the wedding of her son Kallin, August 2, 2014 Cameron, Gordon, Courageous, Coppermine Photo: Julia Pepler Voyageur II is a life-changing 52-day canoe trip led by Camp Wanapitei that many island youth have been fortunate to go on, and several have also led these epic adventures. This past summer, Julia Pepler joined seven other campers and leaders Sophie Roher and Charles Heath to travel from outside Yellowknife up to the Arctic Ocean. Their approximate route followed the Cameron, Gordon, Courageous and Coppermine rivers. By day 29 they had completed 59 portages! If you’d like an insight into some of the unforgettable moments of their Voyageur II trip, you can watch a video Julia made at vimeo.com/juliapepler – Allyson Woodrooffe 5 2014 Terry Fox Weekend September 13th -14th marked the Fourth annual Terry Fox Weekend! This weekend incorporates a variety of events around the community, bringing Islanders together to support The Terry Fox Foundation and cancer research. Cancer has affected too many individuals in our community and only together can we beat cancer. Events this year included: The Baseball Tournament (a.k.a. The Fox Bowl), Kid’s Baseball, Soccer, Tennis and of course the Terry Fox Run. The Terry Fox Run was held on Sunday morning - with the weather being perfect and the sun shining brightly, it seemed as if we got some help from those looking down on us. It is with great pleasure that we announce that the run had a record year as we had 291 participants jog, bike, rollerblade and walk over 1,800 km (the equivalent of Halifax to Toronto!) to raise over $28,000! This event could not have been successful without the tremendous support of our volunteers around the Island community. I would like to thank everybody who came out during run day. See the amazing list below! I would also like to give an extra special thank you to Bridget MacDonald, Joan MacDonald and Val Cook for their support in organizing the run for the previous 15 years. They have done a tremendous job in building the run to be as successful as it can be. I look forward to continuing this success and the Island community can’t thank these individuals enough! Tom Butscher represented the Toronto Island Rowers by rowing the full Marathon in four hours and 25 min. Tom (71) was the only entry in the over-60 category and received a gold medal. The previous day, Tom raced in a 10 km sprint race – also on the Ottawa River – in a time of 56 mins. and 30 secs. Where the waters of the Rideau canal drop into the Ottawa River. Shadowland Recap Shadowland’s 30th summer has been a full one. We began in May in Kingston creating a giant puppet of Sir John A. MacDonald and big-headed versions of other historical characters. We celebrated Canada Day with these puppets and created a 40-foot-long Eh! Train representing Canada, for an arts festival run by the Island’s own Lory MacDonald. We moved right along to the Ward’s Island Fire Parade and were glad to mark this anniversary year with our Island community. For August, we focused on the Ashkenaz Festival parade at Harbourfront Centre with a cavalcade of giant puppets that represented all the stages of life, all accompanied by the fantastic Lemon Bucket Orchestra. As I write, we are in the midst of a run of performances in Norfolk County with Treading Water, the third collaboration with this wonderful rural community on Lake Erie. We round out our season with a celebratory opening ceremony of the new June Callwood Park on October 4 at 7 p.m. The youth theatre program has begun again at the AIA on Mondays, soon it will be Mummers time. How time flies. Thanks to so many of you for your support of Shadowland. – Anne Barber Recent Milestones Kallin Nagelberg and Faiza Khan were married on August 2, 2014 in Toronto. Congratulations!
