Welcome to the Terry Fox Assembly where... Who was Terry Fox? born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 28, 1958 but he was raised in British Columbia Ordinary young man extraordinary man At age 18 he was suffering from pain in his right knee and one morning he could not move that leg He went to the doctor and was told that he had bone cancer and he had to have his leg amputated Why is Terry Fox a hero? -He was active and loved basketball and hockey - he did his best to continue doing what he was used to -Terry saw the suffering of cancer patients, especially young children and in 1979, he had a dream to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research and he started training -He ran 5000 km just to PREPARE! That is almost 10 kilometers a day -On April 20, 1980, the Marathon of Hope began and he started to run for his dream and left St. John’s Newfoundland Terry’s Route Terry’s journey He ran 42 kilometres per day rain or shine Unfortunately, after 143 days of running, he got sick when he reached Thunder Bay, Ontario on Sept. 1, 1980 and had to stop because the cancer had spread to his lungs. He ran from Newfoundland to Ontario for a total of 5373 kilometres across 6 provinces! Terry Fox passed away on June 28, 1981 His dream continues today There are over 58 countries who participate in the Terry Fox run Over 650 million dollars has been raised to date because of his dream Over 2500 schools around the world also participate and raise money for this worthy cause "Even if I don't finish, we need others to continue. It's got to keep going without me." – Terry Raising money We are now going to hand out to your teachers, the pledge forms that you will receive at the end of the day. As usual we ask you to go to family, friends and relative for donations Please do not go door to door! Bring in your money and if teachers could send the money to the library on a daily basis it would be greatly appreciated. Money will be counted daily so please do not keep it in your rooms until the end of the campaign. We will try to have daily updates on announcements On Thursday, September 25, our whole school will be participating in the Terry Fox run! Classes will be divided and some of you will be running/walking before nutrition break 1 and others will run/walk after nutrition break 2 On the day of the run, you will receive a Terry Fox tattoo as well as a sticker where you can write on it a person for whom your are running; it could be someone who died from cancer or a cancer survivor School goal This year we are working together as a school community to reach our goal of Incentives – Pajama Day $1500.00 – Crazy Hair Day $2500.00 – Hat Day $3500.00 – Class dress up Day $4500.00 – Sports Jersey Day $5500.00 – nutrition break dance party $500.00 Terry’s mottos Anything is possible if you try! One person can make a difference!
