Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou Supports Cancer Research Through the Terry Fox Run Co-founder Bill Vigars joined the event in Guangzhou to mark the 35th Anniversary of the Terry Fox Run January 12, 2016, Guangzhou, China As part of the largest single day fund raising event for cancer research worldwide, the Terry Fox Run in Guangzhou took place at Guangzhou Luhu Golf Driving Range on December 5, 2015. Approximately 4,000 participants in total from both local and expatriate communities joined the non-competitive run of 2, 5 and 10 kilometres. More than half a million Chinese yuan was raised from t-shirt sales, corporate and individuals’ donations, a silent auction and food concessions. All proceeds will go to a local cancer research institute by the Terry Fox Foundation for finding cure of cancer. This is the third year that Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou has organised this event, with support from Guangdong People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Consulate General of Canada in 1 Guangzhou, Guangdong Charity Federation, Guangzhou People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and Luhu Golf and Country Club. This year, a very special and meaningful participant joined the event. The co-founder of Terry Fox Run, Bill Vigars, came a long way and brought more than 20 volunteers for the event from Changsha. He delivered a significant speech about the very initial story of Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope, which took place in early 1980s. As the director of public relations and fund raising at that time, Vigars accompanied Terry along with the run across Canada. He said that it was the first time that he joined the run in China, and it had been of great meaning since 2015 is the 35th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run. He also emphasised the dream of Terry’s as he bore a special mission: “Your participation today gives people with cancer hope. The funds you raise will enable us to take a step closer to finding a cure. Terry taught us to follow our dreams, to believe that one person can make a difference, and how one person's dream can change the world. A little bit of Terry Fox lives in all of you. You keep Terry's dream alive.” “We feel very excited to continuously organise this annual charity event, which is really successful! Special thanks to all participants, supporters and donors,” said Bahram Sepahi, Regional Vice President and General Manager of Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou. “I believe the Terry Fox Run will become even more successful with everyone’s joint effort. Our goal is not only to raise more funds for local cancer research, but also to increase public awareness on cancer.” About the Terry Fox Run Terry Fox is a hero in Canada. Losing one of his legs due to bone cancer, Terry proceeded to prove to everyone that it couldn't stop him running all the way across Canada on an artificial leg. That was in 1980 when Terry Fox started a 143-day journey across the country to raise money for anti-cancer medical research. Named after this inspiring young Canadian man, and firstly launched by a group of supporters including Four Seasons Founder and Chairman Isadore Sharp enthused to keep the young man’s dream alive, the Terry Fox Run has since spread all across the world from Canada, arriving China in the 1990s. The campaign is now the largest single-day fund raiser for cancer research worldwide.
