In exchange for the school’s use of Town facilities, Community Services programs and community users are allowed free access to all Public Schools. We have access to school gyms, classrooms and some libraries (approval of use is at the discretion of the school principal). However, school use receives priority for all bookings, so if the school has an event come up, non-school users will be notified and their bookings may be cancelled. All school and field bookings must be made through the Community Services Department. Schools will not take your bookings. Call (780) 723-4403 or check our website for more info at www.edson.ca. Registrations For courses offered by Community Services, please contact the Town of Edson Community Services Department at (780) 723-4403. For pool programs, please contact the Leisure Centre Swimming Pool at (780) 723-7665 (POOL). You can register online at www.edson.ca, go to Residents-Recreation and FCSS Programs and click on the active living program tab. REMEMBER: Courses will be taken on first come, first serve paid basis. There will be NO PHONE IN REGISTRATIONS. A $25 service charge will be levied on all NSF cheques. Courses may be cancelled if registration is low. Complete refunds will be given if a course is cancelled. You will be contacted if a course is cancelled or there are changes in date or location There will be no course refunds after the course registration deadline If registrations are cancelled prior to the deadline, a $10 cancellation fee will apply. With the guidance of a certified instructor, you will be provided with instructions and tips to enhance your game. Some hockey equipment is required for this course: neck guard, helmet (both mandatory), stick, knee, and elbow pads. Date: September 10-14 (Monday-Friday) Time: 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm Location: Edson & District Leisure Centre Instructor: Doug Laboucane Cost: $50 Belly Dance Date: September 20 November 8 (Thursday) Time: Level One: 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm Level Two: 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm Location: Westhaven School Instructor: Vashti (Carol Young) Cost: $85 Belly Dance is suitable for all ages and fitness levels and it is a fun and safe way to exercise. No prior dance experience is necessary and it does not require above average flexibility. It's a beautiful and ancient form of dance that is enjoyed around the world. There are many styles of Belly Dance but the style primarily taught will be the more modern form that’s commonly seen in restaurants. The Level I beginner course will include the basic steps for Belly Dance, and a short routine will be taught throughout the course. The Level II course will include more use of props such as a veil (props will be provided), more advanced steps, and a routine will be taught throughout the course. Ages 13 and up. Fall Cycle This class will take place on specially designed indoor road bikes. Take your fitness to the next level with this class. Fall Cycle will include interval training, strength drills and endurance rides. No time after work to squeeze in a workout? Join us for a Fit Blitz that will kick start your afternoon. Session 1 will be outdoors and will run rain or shine. Session 2 will be held indoors. This once a week full body functional workout - will incorporate strength, cardio, speed drills, circuits and interval training. X-TREME Burn is suitable for both males and females. This class is a great way to mix up your exercise routine and push your body to its limits. Be prepared for an X-TREME workout! Fifty and Fit! A low impact, high energy fitness class for our mature adults or those looking to start their fitness program. This class includes warm-up, aerobics, circuits, stretching, strength training, and cardio components. Participants should be prepared to laugh and have fun! Materials will be provided. Optional colors and extra tips and icing bags will be available for purchase. Kids aged 10+ with previous cake decorating experience can attend as well. This class offers four 1.5 hour sessions to teach you the basics of a crochet- foundation chain, single, double, half double, treble crochet, slip-stitch, how to change colors, and how to make a granny square. Successful students will take home the paperwork to apply for a Possession & Acquisition Firearms License. While the children play (with a caregiver), you can go through the weekly flyers, plan your meals and your grocery list. This is a great time to share ideas and be inspired by the ideas of others as well. Work on your own or share with others…it is up to you! Friendship Party Thursday, December 20 from 9:30 to 11:00 am Help us finish the 2012 year at the Family/Parent Centre with a party to celebrate friendships. There will be games, activities, fun and visiting and snacks. Page 33 FCSS SPECIAL FAMILY EVENTS FUN FRIENDS Alternating Wednesdays and Fridays starting September 12 and ending December 7 Wednesdays: 1:00 - 3:00 pm • Fridays: 1:00 - 3:00 pm Through fun and practical activities, young children will practice useful strategies for coping with stress, worry, fear and sadness. For example: how to be brave, solve problems, think positively, relax and face challenges. It helps children learn important emotional and social skills that may support them throughout their lives. This program builds new skills each session. Children registered for the program should try to attend every session. Parents must stay and participate at the FCSS Family/ Parent Link Centre. For children aged 4 to 5 years and their parents/caregiver. (No younger siblings please. Child care can be arranged with advance notice.) Cost: $15.00 (to cover the cost of workbook) Dates: Sept 12, 21, 26, Oct 5, 10, 19, 24, Nov 2, 14, 23, 28, Dec 7 FCSS FAMILY PROGRAMMING Living Well Program - Alberta Health Services • The Living Well Program supports individuals living with a chronic health condition. Chronic conditions; develop slowly, last for long periods and most often have no cure. They also limit a person’s ability to do normal daily tasks such as attending work, volunteering or activities at home. Examples of chronic conditions include: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, depression, arthritis, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, multiple sclerosis, parkinson’s, inflammatory bowel disease as well as many others. • The Living Well Program has three program options; exercise, education sessions and a Better Choices, Better Health workshop. Each of these pieces supports participants to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to better manage their daily health challenges. The Programs are designed for adults 18 years and older, living with a chronic condition as well as for their family members. • The Living Well Exercise Program is an Interactive 8 week program with two 1.5 hour sessions weekly hosted by an Exercise Therapist and an Assistant. • Prior to commencing the program all participants undergo an assessment with the Exercise Therapist and an exercise prescription is completed. • Each exercise session includes a self-assessment, warm-up, cardio component, resistance training, balance, and flexibility exercises. • The exercises are set up in station format with a varying degree of difficulty available for each exercise so that participants have the opportunity to experience success and skill mastery. • There are several Education sessions: diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight wise. Each of these sessions is 2hours in length and delivered by a nurse and dietician. These sessions provide information on disease process, management strategies, benefits of lifestyle change, treatment options and available resources. • The Living Well Better Choices, Better Health™ workshop is a fun, interactive 6 week program addressing different topics to help better manage day in day out, one step at a time: • Symptom management • Techniques to deal with difficult emotions like anger, fear, frustration, fatigue, pain and feeling alone • Use of medications • Nutrition • Physical activity • Communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals • Making informed treatment decisions • Problem solving • Weekly action planning Benefits of attending the Program include: •Better symptom management •Increased confidence in both knowledge and use of new information and skills •Fewer visits to the physician or other members of the health care team. •Increased quality of life •Increased physical activity For more information or to register, call Megan 1-877-349-5711 or e-mail [email protected] Page 34 FCSS FAMILY PROGRAMMING COMPASS Liberty Group Do you provide care for a child or youth who is living with challenges due to disability or illness? COMPASS teaches caregivers to care for themselves. Along with their fellow participants, caregivers gain an understanding of the journey and learn how to make it a little less difficult.
