At the end of 2013, we asked
ourselves if the Zoo could continue its record-setting pace
into 2014, and the answer was
a resounding “Yes!” The year
2014 proved to be another
landmark in the Zoo’s 51-year
history. While attendance
kept pace with the 490,000+
visitors trend, revenues topped
$10 million for the first time.
This means that while receiving no support from public
funds, the Zoo’s ability to
generate revenue covered the
cost of operations. That’s great
news for donors, because their
designated essential support
goes right into the capital
projects and programs that
make the Zoo a valued community resource.
Thanks to the generosity of individuals, corporations, and
foundations, we were able to bring a new Zoo facility on line in
March: the long-awaited Discovery Pavilion! This energy-friendly
education center quickly became the hub of Zoo programming
and conservation activities. So many anticipated benefits of
the $7.5 million, 9,500-square-foot facility are already being realized. In fact, it’s difficult to imagine how we got along without
it for 50 years! Guests now enjoy the opportunity to observe
the inner workings of the Ridley-Tree Animal Kitchen following
their walk through the Volentine Family Gallery with its changing exhibits; Zoo Camp has new space for camper projects in
the Children’s Activity Zone (sponsored by Deckers Outdoor
Corporation); Zoo volunteers have a place all their own in the
Diane Pearson Volunteer Lounge; the field conservation team
has a dedicated space to call home; the education team has
offices befitting a group of outstanding professionals; financial
management expanded into the Dreier CFO Office; Zoo staff
and educators can find valuable resources in the Mimi & Dennis
Muraoka Library; the new evening adult lecture series has a
home in the Frank Jordano and Sharon & David Bradford classrooms; and special and private events find ample space in the
classrooms and on the Crawford Family Terrace. It’s fantastic!
The Zoo’s three celebrity dinosaurs starred in a new, always-popular summer show, “Chomp! Chomp! Dinosaurs are Picky Eaters.”
With his participation in the shows and special events off Zoo
grounds, such as the Downtown Santa Barbara Holiday Parade,
Duncan the T-Rex remains the rock star of our dino trio, who are
all sponsored through the generosity of the Duncan family.
When it comes to recognition, the Zoo continued to capture
the attention of the media. Nancy McToldridge (Zoo Director),
Carol Bedford (CFO), and Estelle Sandhaus, PhD (Conservation
& Research Director) were all honored by the Pacific Coast Business Times for their professional contributions to the Zoo and
our community. The Zoo also remained in its position as the
second-most attended museum-like venue in the tri-counties;
second only to Hearst Castle. And the Zoo continued to reign
as the most popular family attraction in the Santa Barbara NewsPress Readers’ Choice Awards.
In August, Zoofari Ball: Spy-fari set an all-time revenue record.
Sponsorships were also at an all-time high, with long-time Zoo
partner Union Bank leading the way as they stepped up for the
second year in a row to be the event’s “naming sponsor.”
Animal births made headlines throughout the year, especially
the births of baby anteaters in April and November and the
arrival of a baby giraffe on November 13. Buttercup, the baby
male Masai giraffe hit the ground at 6’8” tall and 186 pounds.
The timing was perfect. In just over two weeks, Buttercup had
made headlines in more than 220 media markets across the U.S.
Thanks to the Pryor family, the baby giraffe entered the world
with a name and his very own Ty Beanie Baby.
Is the Zoo’s team of highly-skilled, enthusiastic, and professional
staff and dedicated, passionate volunteer crew ready to face the
challenge of making more record-setting progress in 2015? You
bet we are! We are committed to delivering memorable and
inspiring guest experiences, meeting the highest standards of
animal care, and participating in important field conservation
programs. It’s worth repeating that the significant improvements to our facilities and enhancements to our programs
would not be possible without the generous support of our
donors, members, and friends. Thank you for believing in our
mission and having the confidence to invest in our vision for a
treasured community resource that will touch millions of lives in
the years to come.

It’s a Boy (x5)!
The Zoo had several notable births in 2014, including
golden lion tamarin (GLT) twins, two giant anteaters, and a
giraffe calf…all males!

The GLTs were born on July 20, and
both boys grew quickly. They were the
first offspring for our new breeding
pair of GLTs, and are expected to be excellent big brothers in the near future.

The giant anteater pups were born
March 1 and November 6. Since
zookeepers hand-reared the male born
in March, his mom quickly became
pregnant again. She took to mothering
well with the pup born in November,
and is raising him on her own. The Santa
Barbara Zoo has a long history of success
with breeding giant anteaters; however, these two pups are the first giant
anteater pups born here in the past nine
years. The prospect of having a successful breeding pair again is exciting!

The final birth of the year was Buttercup,
a big, healthy male giraffe calf born on
November 13. Buttercup weighed 168
pounds and was 6’8” tall at birth, then
grew another 12 inches in his first two
months of life!
At the close of 2014, the Zoo’s animal collection consisted of
585 individuals representing 144 species. We participated in
Species Survival Plan programs with 44 of these species, collaborating with other zoos to maximize the genetic diversity
and overall health of each population via breeding (or not),
transfers, and information sharing.

Thanks to a partnership with Gold Coast Toyota Dealers (including DCH Toyota of
Oxnard, Toyota of Lompoc, Toyota of San Luis Obispo, Toyota of Santa Barbara, Toyota
of Santa Maria, and Ventura Toyota), Santa Barbara Zoo staff raises awareness about
local species of concern while riding in style out to rugged field sites in Santa Barbara,
Ventura, Los Angeles, and Kern counties. The Gold Coast Dealers Association’s generous
donation of three 2014 Toyota 4Runners (4x4 Trail Edition) allows the Zoo to support
multiple local conservation programs simultaneously and safely.

California Condor
The California Condor Nest Guarding Program, a collaborative
effort between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Santa
Barbara Zoo, has shepherded the successful fledging of 25 wild
condor chicks since 2007. In addition to helping fledge three
chicks this year, the team also assisted with critical nest entries,
remote streaming nest camera installation and maintenance, and
general monitoring. A generous grant from Disney Conservation
Fund provided assistance for nest guarding equipment and staff.
Additionally, support from the Phoenix Zoo enabled the Santa
Barbara Zoo to purchase motion-activated game cameras, allowing the team to capture social interactions, chick development,
and feather growth, as well as fledging activity.
Southern Sea Otter
The Zoo joined the U.S. Geological Survey in 2012 to help monitor the southern sea otter as the species expanded its range to
southern California. This year, Zoo staff continued to monitor the
spatial distribution, social dynamics, and breeding success of
tagged otters to learn more about the local population and its
interactions with the nearshore habitat.
Channel Island Fox
Approximately 15 years ago, four subspecies of Channel Island
fox were at risk of going extinct. Today, thanks to the work of the
Santa Barbara Zoo and its partners in island fox recovery, many
of the populations are returning to historic numbers that were
recorded prior to the dramatic decline. The Zoo partners with
the National Park Service to monitor fox populations on the
northern islands and to help prevent future declines of these
curious and complex canids. This past year, the Zoo sent several
Animal Care staff to Santa Rosa and San Miguel Islands for eightday tours, where they assisted with tracking the distribution and
population of foxes by trapping target animals.
Amphibians
Zoo staff collaborates with the U.S. Forest
Service to monitor and protect breeding
habitats for local threatened and endangered amphibian species: specifically,
the threatened red-legged frog and the
endangered arroyo toad, which are found
throughout the Santa Ynez River and its
tributaries. Frog surveys in the Los Padres
National Forest are conducted in spring
and early summer months to determine
breeding efforts and successes, estimated
population densities, and available habitat. The Zoo also hosts a local FrogWatch
chapter that recruits and trains citizen
scientists to learn about amphibians in
their communities, and report data on the
calls of frogs and toads.

programs such as adult lectures,
homeschool science semester,
fall Zoo Camp, kids-only “date
night,” watercolor “playshop,” Girl
Scout badge, and teen research.

Zoo Camp
More than 1,700 students attended our awardwinning Zoo Camp in 2014, and experienced a freshly
updated program. Campers enjoyed a variety of
activities, including animal encounters, train rides,
crafts, and rock climbing while learning about animal
care and conservation. Our Conservation Crew (ages
9-12) enjoyed off-site learning at the neighboring bird
refuge and local beaches. We launched our first-ever
Fall Camp during Thanksgiving week, hosting more
than 130 campers over four days.

Homeschool Science
In the spring of 2014, more than 100
students registered for the Zoo’s pilot
Homeschool Science program. The new
course made great use of the recentlyopened Discovery Pavilion. Students
aged 4-17 engaged with a variety of Zoo
resources for a hands-on, inquiry-based
approach to learning about ecosystems
in the spring semester, and body systems
in the fall semester. Local homeschool
families are already registering for spring
2015’s biodiversity semester.

Condor Kids
As partners in a grant award, the Zoo’s
education team is heavily involved in the
development of the Condor Kids Project.
This year, the team began developing
inquiry-based, interdisciplinary lesson
modules tied to Common Core and Next
Generation Science Standards for 3rd
and 6th grade students. The multi-year
project is designed to increase condor
awareness and generate a passion for
these fascinating birds whose natural
habitat is nearby.
Safaris
In 2014 the Zoo hosted more than 2,200
guests - Scout groups, schools, camps,
and families – for an after-hours Zoo
experience through the overnight and
twilight Safari programs. It is an experience unlike any other, with behind-thescenes tours, animal encounters, and
a roaring lion alarm clock! On the last
day of 2014, a record number of guests
attended New Year’s Eve Date Night, an
increasingly popular local tradition.
Lectures
In tandem with Discovery Pavilion opening, the Zoo’s lecture
series - At the Watering Hole – added to the list of education
programs in 2014 with six conversations about conservation.
Whether the discussion focused on recovering local species, the
uniqueness of the Channel Islands, or how animals think and
play, guests were invited to contemplate a larger vision for local
conservation, and to discover how the Santa Barbara Zoo plays
a significant role in broader conservation initiatives.

It isn’t easy being green. The Santa Barbara Zoo is committed to
this effort and continues to improve every year. In 2014, the Zoo
was certified as a Santa Barbara Green Business.

Solar Energy
The new Discovery Pavilion has 65 solar panels (245 watts each) on
its roof, and a 15.92 kW generator with estimated monthly energy
production of 2000 kWh per month. A 5.28 kW generator was added to
the 44 solar panels (120 watts each) currently installed on the roof of
the Gorilla/Giraffe Barn. The estimated monthly output of 800 kWh gives
the Zoo a total solar output of roughly 21.2 kW of power for an overall
energy production of roughly 2,800 kWh per month. All excess power is
distributed to other areas of the zoo via internal distribution panels.

Food Service
We serve sustainable seafood at The
Wave restaurant, and source local produce for our animals.

Water Consumption
We use a reverse osmosis water cooler to
reduce disposable bottled water use, and
monitor water usage monthly to detect
leaks. Potable consumption was reduced
by 16% from 2013 levels. In addition,
the Zoo uses reclaimed water for plants,
restrooms, and landscape features.
Recycling and more
All glass, plastic, aluminum, and paper in guest and employee
areas is recycled at the Zoo. The restaurants use sustainable, compostable materials for flatware and tableware, and napkins made
of unbleached fibers. Congratulations to Zoo employees Chris
Gambler, Trent Barnhart, and Brian McDonald, who were honored
with the Looking Good Santa Barbara Award for their efforts in
composting and sorting recyclables with new Zoo receptacles.
In 2014, more than 2,700 pounds of hazardous waste was properly disposed of at the UCSB CEC Collection Center as well as at
the SB County Transfer Station, including e-waste, batteries, paint,
waste oil, and unwanted cleaning chemicals. More than 350
pounds of that total was from batteries collected from the public.
More than 300 cell phones and other small electronics were collected throughout 2014, and the proceeds from this recycling
program were contributed to gorilla conservation organizations.
Electrical Consumption
The Zoo’s electrical consumption for 2014 was roughly 3% less
than in 2013: 898,250 kWh, down from 925,907 kWh in 2013. An
automated lighting system controls the entire Discovery Pavilion
complex. There are skylights in all work spaces to take advantage of natural illumination, motion sensors throughout to turn
off lights automatically, T-8 florescent lights with electronic ballasts, and a highly efficient HVAC system.
More Space = More Food
In March of 2014, Discovery Pavilion opened, providing
additional resources for volunteers, including a
dedicated volunteer lounge, library, and a new volunteer
office. The former site of the volunteer office is being
prepared for a green classroom. This project will be
maintained and interpreted by a group of volunteers,
and is scheduled to open next winter.

New Programs
The Volunteer Office welcomed five
enthusiastic team members in 2014.
Shomari McLemore came on as the
new Volunteer Programs Manager in
May, overseeing all aspects of volunteer
operations. Madalyn Mender, Jacqueline
Pereira, Audrey Sauvey, and Ali Lutz take
care of database management, special
event logistics, and miscellaneous office
tasks. The Zoo’s dedicated volunteers now
have a full team of individuals devoted to
adequately supporting their needs as the
program continues to grow.

Current Programs
The Keeper Aide and Docent programs
experienced significant success this year,
bringing in an additional 22 volunteers
who went through several weeks of
classroom instruction and on-the-job
training. These dedicated volunteers put
in more than 7,000 hours of service and
interacted with 21,811 guests.
The Santa Barbara Zoo’s Foster Feeder program began
in 1974 as a way for individuals, corporations, and
organizations to sponsor the animals that captivate,
inspire, and amaze Zoo guests of all ages. In 2014, Foster
Feeders generously gave more than $213,000 to help
cover the cost of the animal food bill.
