BOB SPOO
Eastern Illinois
Head Football Coach
(Purdue, 1960)
21st Season
Bob Spoo, the dean
of coaches in the Ohio
Valley Conference returns
for his 21st season on the
Panthers sidelines. After missing the 2006 season for medical reasons,
Spoo returned to the team in a full-time capacity
following the Panthers 2006 first round playoff loss. In 2007 that recognized drive and “voice” returned in
full force as Spoo guided EIU to its third straight FCS
playoff appearance and 12th overall.
Over his 21 years on the EIU sidelines, Spoo has
been named the OVC Coach of the Year twice (2001
and 2005), Gateway Conference Coach of the Year once
(1995) and the Region Coach of the Year two times (1995
and 2001). In 2000 he was the runner-up for the Eddie
Robinson Coach of the Year Award. In 1995 he was
named the Football Gazette I-AA Coach of the Year.
Demanding excellence on the field and in the
classroom, Spoo believes that the foundation for
constructing a championship program lies with a strong
defense and sound kicking game, revolving around a
ball-control passing attack.
Spoo and his staff have been commended publicly
by the Faculty Senate for their emphasis on academics. The Daily Eastern News, the campus daily newspaper,
named Spoo as their “Person of the Year” in his second
year in Charleston.
A three year Purdue letterman, Spoo replaced NFL
Hall-of-Famer Len Dawson as the starting quarterback in
1957 and guided the Boilermakers to a two-year record
of 11-5. He co-captained the 1958 Blue team in the
Blue-Gray All-Star game.
Spoo later returned to his alma mater to coach
quarterbacks in the 1980’s, building his resume by
coaching such nationally known passers as Mark
Hermann, Scott Campbell and Jim Everett. All three
would go on to play in the National Football League. During his time at Purdue (1978-1986) the team made
four bowl appearances. Spoo also spent several years
at Wisconsin (1973-77) as the quarterbacks coach.
Prior to becoming a mainstay in the college coaching
ranks, Spoo was one of the most successful prep coaches
in Illinois. He was the head coach at Loyola Academy
in Wilmette from 1967-72 directing the school to a 519-2 record and the 1969 Chicago city championship. He
was the 1970 National High School Athletic Coaches
Association “Football Coach of the Year”, 1969 Illinois
Coach of the Year and 1972 Chicago Coach of the
Year.
Spoo and his wife Susan have one daughter Kate.
EIU would finish the 2007 season with an 8-4 record,
7-1 in the OVC. The Panthers were ranked No. 15 in
the final FCS Coaches poll making their sixth playoff
appearance in the last eight seasons.
The winningest coach in Eastern Illinois history and
the active leader in wins among OVC coaches, Spoo
maintains a career mark of 127-102-1. He has led the
Panthers to ten winning seasons in the last 13 years and
in 2007 won his 60th OVC game.
Under his leadership the Panthers qualified for an
unprecedented three straight trips to the NCAA I-AA
playoffs between 2000-02 and again from 2005-07. EIU has won (or shared) Ohio Valley Conference
championship in four of the past seven seasons. In his
21 years at EIU the Panthers have made nine trips to
the NCAA playoffs with ten finishes in the Top 25 poll. EIU’s deepest run in the playoffs under Spoo came in
1989 when the Panthers knocked off Idaho in the first
round before losing the quarterfinals at Montana. During his tenure at EIU, the Panthers have produced
numerous All-Conference picks including seven
Offensive or Defensive OVC Players of the Year since
the 2000 season. EIU has also had a number of AllAmerican players both on the field and in the classroom. Career Record: 127-102-1 (.552), 20 seasons
Spoo also coached 2002 Walter Payton Award winner OVC Record: 56-24 (.700), 11 seasons
Tony Romo, now a Pro Bowl quarterback with the Dallas
Cowboys.
ROC BELLANTONI
Assistant Head Coach
Defensive Coordinator & Defensive Line Coach
(Iona, 1993) - 8th Season
Winning the turnover battle is something that Eastern Illinois
defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni has preached since he joined
the Panthers staff. Completing his seventh season at EIU that
mantra was proven correct during the 2006 season as the Panthers
led the nation in turnovers gained with 31.
Bellantoni joined the Panthers defensive staff in 2001 and
was promoted to his current role of coordinator following the
2002 spring practice season. In spring of 2007 he was elevated to
assistant head coach.
This year Bellantoni will also coach the defensive line after
coaching linebackers the last couple of seasons. During that span
he had back-to-back Ohio Valley Conference Defenders of the
Year with Clint Sellers in 2005 and Donald Thomas in 2006. In
2007 Thomas finished as a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award
handed out to the nation’s top FCS defensive player.
In 2005 Bellantoni’s defense ranked 19th in the country in
scoring defense allowing just 19.2 points per game. The Panthers
ranked first in the OVC in rushing defense and second nationally
in turnover margin with +1.5 per game. The Panthers scored an
unprecedented eight defensive touchdowns.
Prior to coming to EIU, Bellantoni was the defensive coordinator
at Drake University which shared the Pioneer League title in 2000
with a 7-4 record. Drake’s defense forced 26 turnovers and had
36 quarterback sacks that season. He also coached defensive line
at Drake in 1998 and 1999 with the Bulldogs winning the 1998
conference title.
Bellantoni started his coaching career at Mamoroneck High
School High School in New York in 1993 and made his first
collegiate coaching stop at Buena Vista University in Iowa in
1995.
A 1993 graduate of Iona College, Bellantoni earned three
varsity letters playing defense tackle for the Gaels. He stated his
playing career at Massachusetts as a member of the 1998 Yankee
Conference championship team.
Bellantoni currently serves as the Panthers recruiting contact
for the Iowa Junior Colleges and south Florida. He also serves
as the liaison with campus food services and housing and is the
summer camp director.
Bellantoni and his wife Jenny have four sons, Gino, Marco
and twins Nicolas and Ricky.

previously served in from 1990-2002.
Wittke comes back to EIU following his most recent stint at
Northern Illinois during the 2007 season where he served as the
offensie coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Wittke is best known for helping to develop current Dallas

coordinator from 1990-2002. During that time frame EIU posted
82 wins, made five FCS playoff appearances and was capped off
by Romo earning the 2002 Walter Payton Award. He was named
the AFCA Division I-AA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2002 as
the Panthers offensive unit ranked fourth in the nation in scoring
(35.3 ppg) and fifth in total offense (452.6 yards/game).
During his first stop at EIU, Wittke coached 14 players
who earned offensive All-American honors and numerous AllConference selections in both the Ohio Valley Conference and
Gateway Football Conference. Three of his offensive units
rank among the top five at EIU for total offense and scoring in a
season. Following the 2002 season, Wittke worked as the offensive
coordinator at the University of Arkansas from 2003-05 and one
season at both Arizona State University (2006) and Northern
Illinois University (2007). Wittke coached in both the 2003
Independene Bowl with Arkansas and the 2006 Hawai’i Bowl with
Arizona State.
He has also had stints at his alma mater Wisconsin EauClaire (1979-81), Montana State University (1982-84) and Central

2008 Eastern Illinois Football Spring Notes
2008 SEASON OUTLOOK
-- Eastern Illinois should once again be near the top of the Ohio Valley
Conference race and in contention for its fourth straight FCS playoff
appearance. EIU returns most of its offensive line from last year and
has loaded on running backs for an offensive that likes to pound the
ball at its opponents. Junior Bodie Reeder returns at quarterback but
will have to learn a new system as former EIU offensive coordinator
Roy Wittke returned to EIU this spring. Wittke’s last run at EIU
produced three straight OVC Player of the Year Awards for Tony
Romo. On defense, the question mark will be how quickly can a new
corps of linebackers adapt to college football. EIU returns most of its
defensive line intact and had only one loss in the secondary. Both of
those positions had more than capable back-ups to step in and produce
for the Panthers. PANTHERS DRIVE FOR FOUR
-- Eastern Illinois will make a drive for its fourth straight FCS playoff
appearance in 2008. EIU made three straight playoff appearances for
the second time in school history last season. EIU has never strung
together four straight FCS playoff berths. EIU currently is tied for
fourth in the FCS ranks for active FCS playoff appearances with three
time FCS defending champion Appalachian State.

STABLE FULL OF RUNNERS
-- With the loss of a 1,000 yard rusher in the each of the last two
seasons to graduation, you would think Eastern Illinois would be
young at the running back position. This season is quite the opposite
as the Panthers will have several top running back options. Senior
Norris Smith returns after missing the 2007 season with some knee
injuries. In 2006 he was a force with two 100-plus yard efforts and 656
total yards with 6 touchdowns. He will be joined by senior Travorus
Bess who started a handful of games in 2007 rushing for 612 yards
with 121 yards receiving. The most explosive back in the mix did not
play at EIU last year, Chevon Walker, is a mid-year transfer from the
University of Florida. He played in a couple of games for the Gators
in 2007 after redshirting in 2006. Coming out of high school he was
rated the No. 5 running back in the nation. EIU also returns fullback
Chip Keys who missed a portion of last year with an ankle injury. In
five healthy games, Keys scored six touchdowns with 121 yards and
5.5 yards per carry.
OFFENSIVE LINE INTACT
-- Eastern Illinois lost two seniors from its 2007 offensive line, but
the impact should not be overwhelming as both seniors missed a
total of seven games due to injury. In those games, EIU started five
sophomores across the line that all return this season. During one
start against Tennessee State, that collection of sophomores helped the
Panthers rush for a season high 351 yards. The group is anchored by
honorable mention All-American guard Chaz Millard at guard. AllOVC newcomer selection Kevin Mahoney plays the other guard with
tackle Will Norris also starting all 12 games last season.
WIDE RECEIVER SHOES MUST BE FILLED
-- EIU’s biggest concern on offense may be filling the shoes of several
wide receivers, most notably All-American Micah Rucker who scored
22 touchdowns with 1,743 yards receiving the last two seasons. EIU also lost possession receiver Jason Fisher to graduation. EIU
does return senior Alicus Nozinor who made 37 grabs fro 367 yards
last season and junior Adam Kesler who missed the season with an
ACL injury. EIU is counting on the production of some newcomers
including redshirt freshman Lorence Ricks and incoming freshman
Von Wise and Chavar Watkins.
EIU SPECIAL TEAM STANDOUTS
-- Special teams should be one strong area for the Panthers as they
return all facets of the game. Kevin Cook ranked fourth in the nation
last season as a redshirt freshman. Kicker Tyler Wilke was a perfect
40-for-40 on PAT’s and was strong down the stretch in made field
goals. Quinten Ponius will be a senior kick off returner after taking
one back for a score last season. EIU’s punt return game should be
bolstered by the return of punt returner Adam Kesler.
NOT MANY NEW FACES UP FRONT
-- Eastern Illinois will only have to replace two players from its ten man
rotation on the front defensive line as the Panthers only lost seniors
Michael Torres and Tim Kelly. To replace them, EIU will move up
Trevor Frericks and Ryan Bennett. Frericks had 30 tackles including
7 for loss and two sacks last season. Bennett made 16 tackles with
3.5 for loss. The strength of the line will be in seniors Jeff Sobol and
Pierre Walters. Walters is an All-American candidate with a team high
4 sacks last year. Sobol was big up the middle making 26 tackles and
a team high 9.5 for loss.
SECONDARY TO NONE
-- After entering 2007 having to replace all four starters in the defensive
backfield, EIU will only to replace one player in 2008 and the Panthers
appear ready to do just that. EIU returns starters Rashad Haynes and
Ke’Andre Sams who were both second team All-OVC performers last
season. Haynes led EIU with five interceptions at cornerback. Sams
was fourth on the team with 67 tackles. Senior Adrian Arrington also
returns after ranking third on the team with 72 tackles. Add to that
mix Seymour Loftman, a second team All-OVC pick in 2006 who
missed last season with an injury, and the Panthers have four veteran
starters returning. EIU also expects improved play from sophomores
Bobson Mercier and CJ James who played a good amount of nickle
coverage last year. EIU also have four freshman cornerbacks entering
this fall who will compete for time.
LINEBACKER QUESTION MARK
-- The biggest question mark on EIU’s defensive unit will be the
growth of EIU’s linebacking corps. Gone are Buck Buchanan finalist
Donald Thomas and fellow senior Matt Westrick. EIU has several
returners at linebacker including some young players will get their
shot at starting spots. Seniors Jack Kosinski and James Larson split
time at one linebacker spot last season combining for 87 tackles. In
the middle sophomore Alain Marcelin will get a shot. In his only start
of 2007, he responded with a team-high 8 tackles. Other linebacker
candidates will be Nathan Shortridge, Nick Nasti, Corey Leman and
incoming freshman Gordy Kickels.
2008 Eastern Illinois All-Star Candidates
PIERRE WALTERS
Defensive End - RS-Senior
(6-5, 261, Forest Park, Ill./Westchester St. Joseph)
Walters was a third team All-American selection by the
Associated Press last season after a solid year anchoring the
Panthers defensive line. Walters finished the season with
47 tackles (25 solo) and 6.5 tackles for loss. He was the
team leader for a second straight year in sacks, leading EIU
with 4. He also added two pass break-ups, two quarterback
hurries, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery to his
list of stats. Walters was also a first team All-Ohio Valley
Conference selection.

was a first team All-Ohio Valley Conference selection and

season record for punting at Eastern Illinois passing the
record previously held by former NFL All-Pro Jeff Gossett. Cook had a long punt on the season of 61 yards. He also had

Senior Cole Stinson tossed for a career-high 308 yards hitting
19-of-26 passes with two touchdowns as the Panthers routed
Tennessee Tech 45-24 in the conference opener for both
teams. TTU lead 10-7 in the first quarter as Lee Sweeney
hit Larry Shipp for a 15-yard score with 1:03 left in the first. EIU scored the next 24 points and put the contest out of
reach as Micah Rucker hauled in 9 passes for 169 yards and
two touchdowns. Chip Keys also scored two short yardage
touchdowns as the Panthers improved to 11-1 in Ohio Valley
Conference openers. The EIU defense limited TTU to only
83 yards rushing including one yard rushing in the second
quarter. The Panthers also forced three turnovers.
All-American candidates Curtis Painter and Dorien Bryant
both had big days as Purdue spoiled EIU head coach Bob
Spoo’s homecoming to West Lafayette. Painter threw for six
touchdowns while Bryant had 111 yards receiving during the
52-6 Boilermakers win. Tyler Wilke provided all of EIU’s
scoring as he connected on field goal attempts of 24 and 27
yards during the first and third quarters. EIU was held to
less than a 100 yards rushing for the second straight game
as Purdue was able to put pressure on the EIU quarterbacks
most of the afternoon. The game was slowed by a one hour
lighting delay as both teams came out of the locker rooms
for the second half.
Illinois State’s Kaschiev Hunter recovered a fumble on the
20-yard line with 26 seconds remaining in the game that
ended an Eastern Illinois potential game tying or winning
drive. The fumble helped ISU secure a 24-21 win as the
No. 17 Redbirds and No. 14 Panthers did battle in their
annual rivalry game. EIU was driving down the field under
the direction of back-up quarterback Bodie Reeder who
had already marched EIU down the field early in the fourth
quarter for a Chip Keys touchdown and 21-17 EIU lead. Rafael Rice scored what proved to be the game winning
touchdown on a two-yard dive with 6:52 left in the game. First Downs................................ 19.......................25

Brady Woolverton recovered a muffed punt at the Southeast
Missouri 3-yard line and Ademola Adeniji scored two plays
later to help lift Eastern Illinois to a 31-16 victory. EIU
overcame two first half fumbles on its half of the field as the
Panthers defense limited the Redhawks to only two Doug
Spada field goals. Bodie Reeder hit Jordan Campanella on
a 5-yard pass to give EIU a 14-13 halftime lead. Following
another Spada field goal that put SEMO up 16-14, Reeder
hit Micah Rucker on a 45-yard fly pattern to put EIU up
for good. Rashad Haynes picked off his second pass of the
game at the five yard line to ice the game in the fourth.
Eastern Illinois had an onside kick recovery overturned
by penalty with 1:30 left in the game as Eastern Kentucky
recovered the second attempt to hold on for a 28-21 win. Colonels quarterback Allan Holland was an effective 30-for44 for 321 yards. Both of his touchdown passes came as
he eluded a Panthers pass rush and hit open receivers while
scrambling out of the pocket. EIU’s offense was led by
Ademola Adeniji’s career-high 186 yards rushing. Adeniji
had a 73-yard touchdown burst and added 58 yards on three
pass receptions. EIU’s defense held one of the OVC’s top
rushing games in check with only 74 yards.

Seniors Ademola Adeniji and Micah Rucker each posted
career days as the Panthers escaped Murray State with a 2724 win during the Racers homecoming game. Adeniji ran
for 197 yards and three touchdowns. He just missed a fourth
touchdown when the ball was stripped as he was reaching
for the goal line. Rucker hauled in 11 passes for 153 yards
and a touchdown as the Panthers made it seven straight
games without an interception. Despite the big offensive
numbers, Joel Evers had to recover an onside kick attempt
with 20 seconds left to help preserve the win. Murray State
was able to take advantage of three EIU fumbles including
two on punt returns.
Adrian Arrington made a tackle at the one yard line with
one second left and Tennessee Martin spiked the ball as
time expired to hand Eastern Illinois a 29-23 victory. The
Panthers had take the lead as Bodie Reeder marched EIU
down the field hitting Micah Rucker and Ademola Adeniji
on the drive. Travorus Bess broke a 25-yard run to put EIU
in field goal range, but Adeniji scored a touchdown two
plays later to put EIU up for good. The Panthers trailed 20-7
at one point before rallying for the win. Rucker hauled in
seven passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns. It was the
eighth straight homecoming win for the Panthers.

Michael Torres tipped a pass to himself with just over
three minutes left in the game and rambled 40 yards with
the interception for a touchdown to seal the Panthers 3723 win at Jacksonville State. Following an offensive
outburst by both teams in the first half, EIU scored second
half touchdowns with the Torres interception return and a
Quinten Ponius 97 yard kick return to open the second half. EIU’s defense limited Jacksonville State to only a Gavin
Hallford 25-yard field goal in the second half. In the game
Ademola Adeniji rushed for 158 yards and two touchdowns. The 158 yards pushed him over the 2,000 yard mark for his
career and 1,000 yard mark for the season.
Eastern Illinois stated its case for an NCAA playoff atlarge bid with a solid 33-17 win over Samford University
in the Bulldogs final OVC appearance. Ademola Adeniji
opened the win with a 65-yard touchdown run on EIU’s first
offensive play from scrimmage. He would finish the day
with 170 yards and three touchdowns to finish the season
with 1,178 yards. The defense was also solid as Trevor
Frericks blocked a kick that was returned 60 yards for a
touchdown by Rashad Haynes. Frericks also recorded a
safety in the third quarter. EIU had its questions answered
following the win as they were selected to the field of 16 for
the 2007 NCAA FCS Football playoffs.
Southern Illinois scored ten first half points off of Eastern
Illinois turnovers and the Salukis built a 20-0 halftime lead
to advance to the NCAA second round. After EIU made
a stop on the first SIU drive, the Panthers fumbled their
first offensive snap inside the redzone allowing SIU to
score a couple of plays later. SIU held Ademola Adeniji to
just 76 yards rushing as the Panthers scored 11 points late
but were never really in the contest. Nick Hill was a dual
threat passing for 234 yards while rushing for 32 yards and
a touchdown. EIU did play with out All-American wide
receiver Micah Rucker for a majority of the game. Senior
linebacker Donald Thomas finished his career wtih a 15
tackle game.
*** Note *** Eastern Illinois has now made the NCAA FCS
Playoffs 12 times since joining that level of football in 1981. The 12 playoff appearances currently ranks 9th among active
FCS level schools.
