Mayor of Sports & Culture in Copenhagen
2011 BmX World BmX city
championships copenhagen
The fact that the 2011 UCI BMX World
Championships are being held in Copenhagen
is further proof of the city’s dedication to
cycling. Copenhagen was the first city in the
world to receive the UCI Bike City label, which
is awarded to internationally renowned cities
for their support of cycling at all levels. One
of the criteria for becoming a Bike City is the
organisation of events on the UCI international calendar.
Copenhagen has more than fulfilled this
requirement over the last few years by organising legs of the UCI BMX Supercross series,
UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics and last
year’s UCI Track Cycling World Championships. In September, Copenhagen will also
host the UCI Road World Championships. But
for the moment, all eyes are on the specialists
of cycling’s spectacular BMX discipline. I know
that Copenhagen will once again rise to the
occasion to ensure that this is a top quality
event, and I am looking forward immensely
to this edition of the Worlds. I have no doubt
that my enthusiasm is shared by the competitors, especially those who have already been
fortunate enough to come to this beautiful city
for the UCI BMX Supercross.
I wish them all the best of luck.
Finally, my thanks go to the Organisation Committee, volunteers and the city’s
authorities who have made this event possible. Yours is a city dedicated to cycling and
we are honoured to return once again for the
2011 UCI BMX World Championships.
The City of Copenhagen wants to welcome the
UCI BMX World Championships 2011. Five
days of world class action, speed and drama,
from the world’s best BMX riders.
Copenhagen is ready - and so are 2,500 riders
from the age of 5 and up - including the professional elite. Ready to give the thousands
of spectators some value for money - at what
will probably be the biggest UCI BMX World
Championships ever.
And our BMX track has once again been
upgraded with a number of new, permanent
facilities - and according to the UCI, we now
have the best venue in Europe.
Copenhagen has been awarded the UCI Bike
City label - and we are proud of that.
Because we are a biking city – with a big biking population. To us the bicycle is more than
an environmentally friendly leisure sport - it is
simply just the best way to get around Copenhagen. Together we bike around 1.21 million
km on our 350 km bike paths and green bike
routes – the same as two bike rides to the
moon and back again – every day!
We know we have now gathered all the best
BMX riders in the world. We know they are all
fighting hard to win. We know we have one of
the world’s best tracks. I don’t think any UCI
BMX World Championships can ask for more.
I wish you all a pleasant stay here in Bike City.
Maybe some of you will tune in on Wonderful
Copenhagen again this September - when riders
are on other bikes - and the UCI Road World
Championships is rolling.

to the World
It is with great pride that Danish BMX, under
Danmarks Motor Union, has been given the
honour to present a Danish audience with the
pinnacle of international BMX.
BMX was established in Denmark just 30 years
ago, and in that relatively short period of time a
tremendous amount has happened to both the
sport, and the Danish clubs.
As such, Denmark is one of the leading countries in Europe when it comes to number of
members in relation to number of inhabitants.
In Denmark BMX is represented by 24 clubs nationwide and is a remarkable sport which manages to grow year on year. The growth comes
largely from the ability to attract new riders that
are fascinated by the youthful sport where action and excitement goes hand in hand.
BMX World Championships are measured by
number of competitors and the breadth of the
elite that compete. These numbers are the
highest within the sport. The World Championships do not have the same restrictions on the
number of Elite competitors that is noticeable at
another of the sport’s mega-events: the Olympic
Games.
At Copenhagen’s BMX facility you will get the
chance to see more international BMX stars
than at any other event in the World.
Congratulations to all the organisations that
have been involved in bringing a world class
event to Denmark. And congratulations in
particular to the local club, Copenhagen BMX,
whose fantastic can-do attitude has set new
standards for what is achievable by a dedicated
yet smaller club.
Welcome to a World Class Sport.

denmark in high gear
In 2011, Denmark is gearing up for no less than three
great cycling events on Danish soil, namely the UCI BMX
World Championships 2011, the 2011 UCI Para-Cycling
Road World Championships and the UCI Road World
Championships 2011.
In many ways, 2011 will be a year of great bike events
and cycling sport in Denmark. With the UCI BMX World
Championships coming up in July in Copenhagen, the
UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships in September in Roskilde and the UCI Road World Championships
in September in Copenhagen/Rudersdal, Denmark
gets the opportunity to show the world that the bike is
a natural part of the Danes’ everyday life and culture.
Moreover, the said three cycling events are important
drivers for Denmark’s brand as one of the world’s
leading sports events destinations.
CEO of Sport Event Denmark, Lars Lundov, says: “Within
the cycling sports community and the sports community
for disabled, these three events are hallmark events.
We do expect that the UCI Road World Championships,
along with the UEFA U/21 European Championships
2011 in June, are the largest sports events in Denmark
ever both in terms of media coverage, prestige and number of visitors. But it doesn’t stop there. I am pleased
to add that beyond these hallmark events, Denmark
is hosting a great variety of World Championships and
European Championships throughout the year. As a
national partner and expert, we are involved in the many
different events, a.o.t. to ensure that Denmark’s image
as an innovative and creative international sports event
destination is strengthened, but also to make sure that
the organiser experience gained at all the events is shared with future organisers of sports events in Denmark.”
Behind the hosting of each of the above three hallmark
events stands a very strong event organisation, estab-
lished early in the process and determined to deliver
successful events to the full satisfaction of the rights owners. In the run-up for the events, it is possible to follow
the preparations closely, e.g. on social media platforms,
and to share the excitement leading up to the hosting of
the events.
Both jointly and separately, the three events are used
as a leverage for a thematization of the Danish bike culture. Just to mention one of the side-events, Copenhagen is staging a “bike festival”, which runs parallel with
the core event; the UCI Road World Championships. And
in Roskilde, the city has announced the year of 2011 as
“Bike Year”.
The UCI BMX World Championships 2011
Both in 2008, 2009 and 2010, Denmark has hosted a
UCI BMX Supercross World Cup. Throughout this period
of time, the organisers have upgraded the track and it
is now ready for the championships, including two permanent starting ramps (5 and 8 metres). In 2010, this
BMX-track was announced as Europe’s best by the UCI
and after the UCI BMX World Championships 2011 it is
an ideal training venue for the world elite in its preparations for the Olympic Games 2012 in London.
The UCI Para-Cycling Road World
Championships 2011
Cyling is one of the biggest sports within para-sports.
In Denmark, there are approx. 600 active riders and
Denmark has a long-standing tradition for medals at the
Para-Olympics (gold in Athens) as well as at European
and World Championships, both on track and road. The
participants at the event in Roskilde will use the race as
a potential leverage for their London 2012 Para-Olympics
qualification. The participants are competing in different
classes of handicap, split up into four categories each
according to the level of disability.
By Eline Andersen, Event and Communication Manager, Sport Event Denmark
The UCI Road World Championships 2011
It has been 54 years since Denmark hosted the largest
cycling event of them all last. With an expected liveaudience of 400,000 over the 6 days of race (20,000
Monday, 30,000 Tuesday, 50,000 Wednesday, 50,000
Friday, 100,000 Saturday and 150,000 Sunday) and
about 1,000 journalists, not to mention a tv-coverage
of 400 hrs, this huge cycling event is by no means the
greatest of the said three hallmark events.
The Danish Cycling Federation has about 25,000
members and is the 14th largest sports federation in
Denmark (under the auspices of the National Olympic
Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark).
FACTS:
Copenhagen is the only city in the world, which has been
appointed as Bike City by the UCI by now and between
2008 and 2011 Copenhagen is host of 6 major international cycling events. HRH Crown Prince Frederik, who is
also an IOC-member, is protector for the BikeCity events.
Behind BCC (Bike City Copenhagen) stand as strong
partners as the Danish Motor Sport Union, the Danish
Cycling Federation, Sport Event Denmark, the City of
Copenhagen, the City of Ballerup, the City of Rudersdal,
the Capital Region and Wonderful Copenhagen.

World Championships
Simone (17 yrs) and Chris Christensen (15 yrs) are siblings, but first and foremost they
are BMX riders and both selected for this years World Championships in Copenhagen.
Everyone knows just a little about these things has great expectations to Simone and
Chris achievements at this years World Championships, which are being held I Copenhagen. And since a large part of their life is being spent on BMX, they find comfort in
each others understanding for and commitment to the sport.
’‘It’s quite cool that we are together on this. We practise together and if anything
comes up, we always have our mutual support’’ says Simone. ‘I don’t even think about
the fact, that my sister is practising a sport exercised mostly by boys’ says Chris.
Without doubt, not many people connect BMX with a typically sport for girls, but that doesn’t
worry Simone at all. On the contrary she believes that her gender gives her better odds: ’I´m
used to racing against boys, so I have a clear advantage. Besides I´m the youngest
in my group, so I’m definitely aiming for a place in the finals’, says Simone. Both Chris
and Simone can without a doubt agree on what they love about the sport: - Chris: ‘The speed is
definitely the coolest thing about it’
Simone: ’Yeah and then the fact that BMX is much more unpredictable that any
other sport. You really have to use your head, when you are riding. It’s extreme and
unpredictable’.’

Fascinated by BMX?
How to get sta
Not only in Denmark but also abroad, BMX is a fast growing sport.
The number of athletes has tripled over the last 10 years. You can easily be part of it yourself!
Klaus Bøgh Andersen started riding BMX
when he was 4 years old. Today he is 24 and
participates in major competitions in Europe
and the rest of the world. He is practising between 14-18 hours a week divided between 9
training passes.
We asked him, how you get started if you
want to ride BMX.
Who can practise BMX?
If you can ride an ordinary bike without any
help, you can ride BMX. We have riders down
to the age of 4 years and in fact you can keep
riding until your body can’t keep up anymore.
How much time does it require?
Most clubs have training twice a week and
races during the weekend. So I think it’s
pretty much simular to all other sports.
Which equipment is required in the
beginning?
The clubs have most of the equipment, which
you can borrow in the time it takes for you
to figure out if the sport is for you. So in the
beginning you can start with a pair of jeans, a
sweater and some sneaks. The rest you can
borrow from the club.
Why Jeans?
They are a little more durable than ordinary
sports clothing, so they provide better protection if you fall of the bike.
What will it cost to start riding BMX in
a club?
A BMX club membership costs approximately
1.100 Dkk a year. For that amount you will off
course get the training, but you will also get a
membership of DMU
(Danish Motor Union), who is the organisation behind BMX in Denmark. It also includes
insurance, if anything happens to you during
training. Last but not least you also get a
membership magazine, which gives you an
update of the sport and the latest news and
up coming events.
“If I fall head over heals for the sport,
how much will it cost to get my own
equipment?
You can get a great bike for somewhere in between 2.500-3.500 Dkk. The rest of the gear
will cost app. the same. So for somewhere in
between 5-6.000 Dkk. you will be geared up.

The handlebar is extra high up to compen-

which is connected to the rear

Wheels
Are typically produced from
aluminium and only 20” big,
if you need them to race.
Gear
Nope, there is no gears on a BMX - and no foot brakes.
Head
Most riders ride with full face helmets, which
cover the entire face and jaw. The helmet
shouldn’t weigh too much in order not to
bother the rider during the race.
arted!
Neck
Many riders started riding with a
neck collar, like the race car drivers
are using. It protects against whiplash, when they crash with the bike.
The rider
Arms
Elbow protection is something the elite
riders usually don’t use with, but for
everyone else, it’s a really good idea,
because if you crash you are most likely
to hurt yourself badly on the elbows.
Hands
The rider's BMX gloves cover the
whole hand and they are without padding as usual bike gloves
Legs
The pace in BMX does,
that you should protect
both your knees and shins
with special guards, which
stretches from just above
your knee and down to
above the instep.
Feet
Riders above the age
of 13 years old can
choose to ride with
click shoes, which
you might know from
other bicycle sports.
But regular sport
shoes will do as well,
as long as they have
a solid sole.

cities wanting to get involved in cycling
(from competition to sport for all), as
an environmentally-friendly leisure
sport and a gentle means of transport.
The awarding of the label is based
on criteria such as the international
standing of the city and its active
commitment to develop cycling (e.g.:
Organization of cycling events, network
of cycle tracks and other quality
facilities).
Events
Bike City Copenhagen offers six world
class races in four years: UCI Track
Cycling World Cup Classics in 2008
and 2009, UCI BMX Supercross World
Cup in 2008 and 2009 - and the two
major events, the 2010 UCI Track
Cycling World Championships and the
2011 UCI Road World Championships.
In 2009 Copenhagen was awarded
another two major events: UCI BMX
Supercross World Cup 2010 and the
UCI BMX World Championships 2011,
just three months before the Road
Worlds. Moreover, a great number of
cycling for all events and other cycling
initiatives are included in the event
calendar.
1.1 million kilometers on bike
Today, 36 % of all Copenhageners
travel on bicycle to work or school. That
is one of the highest percentages in
the world and the ambitious target for
2015 is 50 %. Furthermore, 1.1 million
kilometers are ridden on bicycle in
Copenhagen - every day.
The label enables the selected cities
to organize major events and also to
have a high level of media coverage.
They will in fact receive major media
coverage through the international
UCI events and also, on a wider scale,
regular publicity as a bike city (above
all as a tourist attraction).
The UCI is delighted with Copenhagen’s
commitment to cycling, both in
terms of the organization of high
level competitions as well is in the
development of leisure cycling on a
daily basis.

The Branding Denmark Fund
On our toes for the
UCI BMX World
Championships
Hosting this year’s BMX World Championships offers lots
of opportunities for Denmark.
As you’ll notice the Danish cities are already
full of bicycles. The infrastructure is carefully designed to make a simple bike ride the
fastest and easiest way to get around. And
now the Danes are privileged to welcome
Pro BMX riders into the city as well. The outspoken Danish love for bicycling is just one
of the many reasons behind The Branding
Denmark Fund contributing in organising the
best World Championship ever.
All eyes are on Denmark
Creativity. Attitude. Fun. The BMX discipline
is great entertainment for the masses. And
as international participant or BMX-supporter visiting Copenhagen you are of special
importance to Denmark. As host country
we are on our toes making everyone feel at
home and have some exciting days in Denmark. At the same time providing the best
possible conditions for the visiting international press is equally important. We want to
tell the World what’s going on in Denmark.
And we strive to demonstrate our capacity
in executing high quality sport events and
having more people visiting Denmark in the
future.
Having recently qualified as Olympic discipline Denmark hope to assist the further
development of BMX racing by making sure
that all eyes are on the 2011 Championships!

Volunteers – Help making it happen
The UCI BMX World Championships 2011 have received great help from the BMX sport of Denmark. A high number of volunteers from BMX Clubs all
over Denmark are vital in the making of the event. Besides the invaluable support from the BMX sport and the local football club BK Hekla the support from CPH Volunteers is extremely important to help making the UCI BMX World Championships 2011 happen.
Cph Volunteers is the volunteer squad of Copenhagen city. The main reason for its establishment in June 2009 was to make Copenhagen more qualified to host large international events, for which availability of coordinated volunteer work is one of the necessary preconditions.
By helping Copenhagen host more prestigious international events, Cph Volunteers are providing their share for making Copenhagen a better international host city and a more lively and exciting place to live in for all its inhabitants. Cph Volunteers seek to improve social networking opportunities for
international students as well as Expats. Today the squad consists of more than 1400 members. Hereby Copenhageners have proved that they are
more than willing to support actively great international events in the capital.
Thanks to all volunteers for making it happen!
