2008 Miracle Maker
Julia Bianchi
Julia R. Bianchi is committed to helping build a stronger and healthier community for children and at-risk
families through her volunteer work. She is motivated
by a deep sense of purpose and mission to give back
by helping those who have not had the benefits provided by a strong family, good health and a support
network. She believes in the power of networking and
bringing together people who have a shared philanthropic and charitable passion for helping to build a
better world.
She is currently the Miami-Dade chair of the new
national American Red Cross Tiffany Circle Society
of Women Leaders Initiative, which asks women to
contribute $10,000 annually to their local Red Cross chapter. In 2006-07, the
inaugural year of this effort, 30 Miami-Dade women committed to participating
as Founding Members of the Tiffany Circle. She was recently asked to serve on
the National Cabinet for Tiffany Circle. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross of Greater Miami and the Keys. Since 2004
Julia has served on the American Red Cross Ball committee and chaired the
event in 2005 with revenues exceeding $500,000. In 2007 Julia received the
American Red Cross’s fundraiser of the Year Award.
She has been a member of the Junior League of Miami since 1990 and
served as President in 2001-02. During her twelve years as an active League
member, she chaired numerous projects for the organization including serving
as the executive producer of the Emmy award-winning historical film Our Miami
the Magic City and as the chair of the purchase, $800,000 capital campaign
and renovation of the League’s historic 1926 headquarters located at 713 Biltmore Way in Coral Gables. She also served as the League’s VP Communications and VP Community. As a sustaining member, she currently serves on the
JLM Headquarters Board of Directors and is spearheading the Phase IV renovation of the League’s historic headquarters. In 2007-08 she is also volunteering
as the sustaining advisor to the current Junior League Board of Directors and
JLM President.
In 1994, Julia co-founded and served as chair and co-chair of the Fisher
Island Philanthropic Fund, a volunteer organization of Fisher Island residents
and members dedicated to raising funds for designated charities throughout
Miami-Dade. This Fund was a novel concept because many of the residents
of Fisher Island had a tradition of making their charitable donations to their
“hometown” cities. The Fund gave them a new vehicle to make donations
to social service causes in Miami-Dade. Since its inception, this organization
8
2008 Miracle Maker
managed by the United Way of Miami Dade, has raised more than $6 million
for charities serving children and youth in Miami-Dade.
Julia served as a Board Member of Kristi House, a non-residential treatment
and case management center for sexually abused children, for more than 10
years. She was integrally involved in the initial capital $3 million campaign
for the Orlowitz Lee Children’s Advocacy Center which houses the Kristi House
program. She has worked tirelessly to ensure the long-term financial stability of
this program by serving on the Executive committee and chairing numerous fundraising events, outreach efforts and strategic planning initiatives. She continues
to serve on Kristi House’s signature fundraiser The Touch A Heart Dinner and
Auction which netted more than $360,000 in 2007.
She is also a member of the Fairchild Tropical Gardens Gala Committee and
a supporter of the Women’s Fund of Miami Dade, CHARLEE, and is an active
member of the Miami alumnae chapter of Delta Gamma Sorority.
In Julia’s hometown and secondary residence of Akron, Ohio, she is a Board
Member of the Summa Health Foundation. She volunteers as a committee member with the annual Mid Summer’s Night Gala benefiting the historic national
treasure of Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens and recently served as co-chair of
The Denim and Diamonds Event benefiting The Akron Children’s Hospital which
netted $540,000 for pediatric oncology research.
In May 2007, Julia Bianchi was selected by the U.S. Southern Command to
participate in a civilian leaders’ one-day trip to its Joint Task Force facilities in
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The purpose of this visit was to familiarize community
leaders with the complexities and realities of the Joint Task Force Guantanamo’s
role on the War on Terror.
Julia has been recognized for her volunteer contributions by receiving the
American Red Cross Spectrum Award and The Junior League’s Rebecca Herndon Bush Award and the Women Who Make a Difference Award. She has been
recognized by the March of Dimes as a Leading Lady of Miami. She has also
received national recognition for her community service from Delta Gamma Sorority by being the recipient of the prestigious Oxford Award.
Professional experience includes currently working as Vice President of
Business Development for Pointe Group Advisors. She previously owned JRB
Marketing Inc., a marketing consulting and business relocation firm, from
1990-2000. Julia is a native of Akron, Ohio and graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a BA in English and a BS in Mass Communication.
She and her husband David W. Bianchi, an attorney with Stewart Tilghman
Fox & Bianchi P.A., reside in Coral Gables with their seven-year-old son, Trent.

2008 Miracle Maker
Paula Brockway
Paula Brockway is dedicated to community service
and is involved in numerous local and national
charities and non-profit organizations. Paula,
originally from Texas, and her husband, Bob,
reside in Coral Gables, Florida with their three
children, Cole, 17; Madelaine, 12; and Edith,
almost two years old.
Paula currently serves on the board of directors for Community Partnership for Homeless,
Miami Science Museum, Palmer Trinity School, St.
Thomas Episcopal Parish School and St. Thomas
Episcopal Church Vestry. She is the chair of
development for Palmer Trinity School and the
chair of the Miami Science Museum capital campaign, a $110 million fundraising initiative and the museum’s most ambitious development goal to date. She is on the committee for the Fairchild
Tropical Botanical Garden Gala and will be chairing the 2008 Red Cross
Ball. And, most recently, Paula was asked to chair CHARLEE Homes for
Children’s 25th Anniversary Gala.
In Spring 2007, Paula was invited to join The Tiffany Circle, a major
gifts campaign created by the Chairman of the national Board of Governors and the national campaign chair of American Red Cross. This most
special Women’s Initiative will enhance the services of the organization in
communities throughout the country through each member’s investment
of time, talent and treasure.
Paula has received several awards for her unwavering commitment to
philanthropy and voluntarism in 2006 and 2007. These awards include
being named a “Woman of Substance and Style” by The Miami Project
to Cure Paralysis; the “Starfish Award” presented by the Jackson Memorial Foundation for seven outstanding women who have truly made a
difference; the American Red Cross’ “Victoria Cummock Philanthropic
Spectrum Award;” and the Episcopal Diocese of South Florida’s “Bishop’s
Award in Volunteering.” Paula was also recently honored by Neiman
Marcus Coral Gables at a special luncheon to salute five women in the
community that show exemplary commitment to community.
Paula also devotes her time and resources to other local organizations, including The Junior League of Miami and Kristi House.
Paula and Bob are owners of Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables and
Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay, Bill Ussery Motors Companies, where Bob
serves as Chairman and CEO. With more than fifty years in business, Bill
Ussery Motors is the second oldest Mercedes-Benz dealer in the nation.

Constance Fernandez
Constance Fernandez was born and raised in
Sterling Heights, Michigan and earned a Bachelors degree in finance from The University of
Michigan’s School of Business Administration.
Constance has held dual management and
ownership positions in marketing and operations
in the healthcare, retail and restaurant industries
throughout her career. Her diverse professional
experience has drawn her to philanthropy and
taking an active role in numerous community
organizations. Her recent contributions, enthusiasm, and commitment to the community have
brought her into the spotlight for her achievements.
Constance serves on the Board of Trustees of the United Way, the
Board of Directors of Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation and the
Board of Advisors of The Country Club of Coral Gables.
Her leadership in fundraising includes Miami MetroZoo, Miami
Children’s Hospital, the Children’s Home Society, Miami Children’s
Museum, Mercy Hospital, and United Way of Miami-Dade.
As the 2002 Co-chair of the United Way Mayor’s Ball, she was instrumental in raising more than $1.5 million, the largest and most successful
United Way event in the nation.
Constance and her husband Miguel recognize the importance of
encouraging education and creating an environment for students to reach
their potential. With their endowment of The Miguel B. Fernandez Family
Entrepreneurship Building and its new programs at the University of
Miami, their generosity will further the University’s position as a leader in
business innovation, and will help fulfill Miguel and Constance’s dream
of helping secure the future for students in business professions.
Constance is the proud mother of one son, Cristofer, and four
stepchildren.

2008 Miracle Maker
Evelyn Greer
Attorney and community activist Evelyn Langlieb
Greer wears many hats within the public sector.
She was elected to the Miami-Dade County Public
School Board from South Miami-Dade in 2004.
She served as the first Mayor of the Village of
Pinecrest from 1996 to 2004, she is president of
Greer Properties, Inc., a commercial property developer, and she has practiced law since 1973.
Evelyn received her Bachelor of Arts degree
with a major in economics from Barnard College,
cum laude, in 1970, and earned her law degree
from Columbia University School of Law in 1973.
Through the years she has received many honors there, including the
Lawrence A. Wien Award for Public Service, as well as the Columbia
University Alumni Medal. She is the Vice-Chair of the Law School’s Board
of Visitors and served for twelve years as a trustee of Barnard College at
Columbia University.
Within the South Florida community, Evelyn is a founding director of
Our Kids, Inc., the Miami-Dade foster care umbrella organization. She
serves on the Arsht Performing Arts Center Board and is a director of City
National Bank of Florida, N.A. and Fusion Telecommunications Inc., a
public company. She is also a partner in the Miami law firm of Hogan,
Greer & Shapiro, P.A.
Evelyn’s service and commitment to securing the wellbeing of children
and families is commemorated within the Village of Pinecrest. Opened
in 2001, the former Pinecrest Park was renamed Evelyn Greer Park in
November 2004 in recognition of the contributions and accomplishments
of the Village’s first mayor.
Evelyn has been married to Bruce Greer since 1974 and together they
are the proud parents of three children.
12
2008 Miracle Maker
Irene Korge
Community service has always been the principal focus of Irene Korge’s life. The youngest of
seven in a spiritual Greek family, Irene’s childhood and adolescent years were spent at her
church, singing in the choir and working with
the youth ministry. It was during this time that
she came to realize that our service to others is
our greatest gift--and a true humanitarian was
born.
At 18, Irene relocated to Miami to pursue a
degree in merchandise marketing, and it was at
that time she met her future husband, Chris. The
couple later became very active with the Junior
Chamber of Commerce, a non-profit civic organization of people under
35 whose mission was to raise funds in support of myriad local charities.
Over the years, the couple has supported The United Way (The Mayor’s Ball), Children’s Home Society (Pink and Blue Gala), Project Smile,
Honey Shine Kids, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the American Cancer Society
and many more South Florida organizations.
As a board member of the Special Olympics, Irene has hosted fundraisers for the organization and currently chairs the upcoming Special
Olympics First Fashion Show Luncheon.
Irene is a proud volunteer for the Democratic Party and has held
numerous fundraising and social events at her Pinecrest home, including
hosting President Clinton, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and former
Vice President Al Gore. These fundraising efforts earned the Korges the
honor of being invited to the White House, as well as to State dinners with
the King and Queen of Spain, the President of Colombia, and others.
Despite an active schedule, Irene has never lost sight of what is most
important: her family. A devoted mother to Andrew, a lawyer; Kristina, a
junior at FSU; and Angela, a junior at Gulliver Preparatory School, she
takes great pride in her children’s achievements. She is actively involved
in coordinating events to benefit Gulliver, and her efforts have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to enhance the educational experience of
thousands of children in Miami-Dade County.
Humbled to be receiving this year’s Miracle Makers distinction, Irene
is thankful that she has the health and resources to continue her community service efforts. Most important to her, she says, is the example she
hopes she has set for her children. 13
2008 Miracle Maker
Commissioner Richard Steinberg
Commissioner Richard L. Steinberg, the son of
former Florida State Senator Paul B. Steinberg,
is carrying on his family’s tradition of public
service. Since his graduation from Miami Beach
Senior High School, Steinberg has become an
accomplished and well-rounded individual in his
own right.
Graduating in the top ten percent of his class
from the University of Florida’s College of Business, majoring in Business Management, Steinberg was honored with membership in Phi Kappa
Phi, Order of Omega and a Savant University of
Florida Leadership Honorary. Steinberg continued his education at the
University of Miami where he earned a law degree, cum laude, and
remained politically active. Not content to rest on his laurels, Steinberg
also obtained a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in Finance and
earned the Dean’s Award of Academic Merit.
He now serves the community as an attorney and is active in the
legal community where he has served as a member of both the board
of directors of the Dade County Bar Association and Miami Beach Bar
Association. Commissioner Steinberg also gives back to the community
through his involvement with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami
where he has served as a Big Brother to 15 year old Nick since 1997. In
addition to being a Big Brother, he serves on the organization’s Board of
Directors. Additionally, Steinberg served on the Miami Beach Transportation and Parking Committee and was a member of the North Beach
Development Corporation board of directors prior to his election to City
Commission.
With his election to the City Commission in November 2001 at the
age of 28, Steinberg became the second youngest Commissioner ever
elected, and the youngest commissioner in a quarter century. Subsequently, when the Mayor and Commission unanimously appointed
Steinberg to serve as Vice-Mayor during 2002, Steinberg became the
youngest Vice Mayor in the history of Miami Beach. Commissioner Steinberg’s fresh and youthful perspective has been a welcome addition to the
commission as he furthers his commitment and service to our community.
14
2008 Miracle Maker
His advanced business degree and legal education have proven him well
suited to protect the interests our residents.
While Commissioner Steinberg dedicates a great deal of time on his
roles as an attorney and Commissioner, he also serves on several committees and boards. Currently, Commissioner Steinberg serves as Vice-Chair
for the Land Use and Development Committee. He has also served as Chair
for the Neighborhoods/Community Affairs Committee and Vice-Chair for
the Finance and Citywide Projects Committee. Commissioner Steinberg
serves as President and Legislative Chairman of the Miami Dade League
of Cities, as an ex-officio/government liaison on the Board of Governors
for the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce and as a governing board
member for the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization.
His family has deep ties to the community. His parents Sandy and Paul
have lived in Miami Beach since the 1950s. While Paul and Richard practice law together, Sandy is in the antique and estate jewelry business and
has been very active with charitable causes, including Sun Flower Society,
Temple Emanuel Sisterhood and Mt. Sinai Medical Center’s Foundation.
His sister Lisa, who works with Sandy, resides in Miami Beach with her
husband and their four year old twins. Richard’s other sister, Samantha,
serves our community as Miami-Dade’s forensic artist.
Commissioner Steinberg married his wife, Micky, in July 2005. Micky
is a Realtor Associate with Palm Properties.
Commenting on his service to the community, Commissioner Steinberg states, “I look forward to the opportunity to continue using my strong
experience and passion for the city to serve the great people of Miami
Beach.”

Miracle Maker Lifetime Achievement Award
Electra Spillis
Children and family are the focus of Electra
Spillis’ remarkable life. For more than four
decades she has occupied her days and nights
with reaching out to children in need in the
community, while at the same time serving the
needs of her own family of four children and 13
grandchildren.
She began her community service early on,
after settling in Miami in the 1950’s with her
family, and becoming an active member of St
Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Upon
meeting and marrying her husband of over 50
years, Peter Spillis, she embarked on a future rich with affection for
family and home.
As her family grew, so did her dedication to the community. Her children’s schools, her church, and surrounding community organizations
received the benefit of her effulgent personality. She has lent her energy
and drive to dozens of South Florida organizations including past involvement in the United Way of Miami-Dade, The Children’s Foundation
of Greater Miami, the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis Women’s Guild,
the University of Miami Ear Dears, Miami-Dade Community college
Friends and Family, the Greater Miami Heart Association, Children’s
Resouces. She is a Life Member of the University of Miami Cancer Link
of Sylvestor Comprehensive.
In addition, her leadership skills have brought her to the forefront
to serve as president of the Children’s Home Society Council, Pentland
Hall, Miami Children’s Hospital Community Council, the Philoptochos
Society of St. Andrew Greek Orthodox Church, Gulliver Academy Mothers’ Club, the Florence Crittenton Home, and the Dade County Mothers
of Twins Club.
In 1989, Electra established the Electra V. Spillis Endowment to
benefit the Children’s Home Society of Florida, serving abused, abandoned and neglected children. For her outstanding commitment and
exemplary service, she was named 1997 Woman of Valour by the Children’s Home Society. As a fundraiser Electra is unsurpassed. She was
instrumental in founding the organization’s highly acclaimed Annual
Pink and Blue Gala.
16
Miracle Maker Lifetime Achievement Award
Electra currently serves as president of the Parish Council of St.
Andrew Greek Orthodox Church in Miami, where she has been director
of the Miami Greek Festival Dancers since 1976, and serves on the
St. Andrew Philoptochos Society.
Together with her husband, Electra is an active Trustee of the Miami
Science Museum and Planetarium, a member of the Museum Patrons,
and most recently served on the Museum’s 2008 Gala Committee.
As a long-standing member of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater
Miami Board of Directors, Electra has won the respect and friendship of
all who have come to know her. Among her many achievements, she
was named Woman of the Year in 1996 by the Women’s Committee,
and served two terms, totaling three years, as president of that body.
She is the founder of the annual Miracle Makers Luncheon to honor
community leaders, and continues to serve on the planning committee.
