renewal
has
changed
I'm
not
sure
how
many
people
are
aware
of
the
renewal
process
for
your
expired
GUE
certification.
There
is
no
longer
a
requirement
to
send
in
your
logs.
It
is
simply
an
acknowledgment
of
the
following:
I
(blank)
warrant
that
I
am
an
active
diver
having
done
at
least
an
average
of
8
dives
per
year
(25
over
three
years)
within
the
curriculum
for
which
I
am
applying
to
renew.
I
remain
confident
in
my
skills
with
diving
experience
across
the
range
of
my
diving
qualifications.
Additionally
you
need
to
fill
in
the
details
of
your
current
GUE
card,
pay
the
fee,
and
you’re
set
to
go.

Past
Activities
Sue travels each year to spend quality
time with humpback whales. She
traveled in March to the Silver Banks
(located midway between the Dominican
Republic and Turks Caicos) for 2 weeks
of whaling adventures. This year her trip
was blessed with unusually good
weather and abundant whale encounters,
both on the surface and in the water.

Sue and Beto Nava: Aruba
Sue & Beto ventured to Aruba for a
Nava Family vacation. In addition to
spending time with their nephews
(snorkeling and riding inner tubes pulled
by fast boats), they got in a few dives.
Their favorite dive was on the Antilles,
which is a shallow-water wreck on the
NW side of the island. This was a fun &
relaxing trip, and the location was
perfect for family activities, but while
Aruba is world-renowned for
windsurfing it is not considered a dive
destination. General

The
Escapade
Ranger Chuck Bancroft, Point Lobos
State Park, and BAUE hosted a 3-day
interactive event at Whalers Cove, for
Carmel Middle School students. The
event included a presentation by the
Lifeguards, two marine-life exhibits, and
a geology tour of the park. More than
ninety 7th graders attended the camp,
and they were instructed to keep a
journal and to answer quiz questions on
what they learned during their activities.
Clinton Bauder kicked off the event by
giving an early morning presentation at
Carmel Middle School on the marine life
at Point Lobos, and BAUE activities in
the local area. At Point Lobos, BAUE members were in
charge of the marine exhibits. Our divers
collected specimens, set up displays, and
gave presentations about invertebrate
marine life found in Whalers Cove.
BAUE volunteers were accompanied on
their collection dives by curious harbor
seals who assisted in selecting and
capturing the most interesting
invertebrate specimens. All of the marine life was returned to the
ocean with the help of the CMS students
immediately after the presentations.
We
had
lots
of
hope
for
a
great
winter
season
of
diving
but
that
was
not
to
be.
In
January
we
planned
2
Tech
boats
and
1
Rec
boat.
February
had
3
Tech
boats
scheduled,
and
March
had
2
Tech
and
1
Rec.
Unfortunately
not
all
these
boats
were
able
to
go
but
we
had
a
few
good
dives
through
all
the
sea
nettles
and
brown
water
that
tried
to
dissuade
us.
Community
Activities
In February, BAUE had a few members
participate in a in-water event open to all
divers at Wallins Dive Center. Susan
Bird organized this event to introduce
people to our system and the gear we
use. Susan, Rob Lee and Joakim Linde
provided gear and in-water feedback to
participants, and Beto Nava helped to
introduce GUE by doing a presentation
and lending surface support. The event
was widely appreciated, and Wallins has
asked for BAUE to support a Try-GUE
event once a quarter at the shop.

to
BAUE

Project
Baseline.
Since
their
visit
BAUE
has
been
investigating
the
best
way
to
help
GUE
in
their
vision
for
Project
Baseline
and
how
to
enable
our
members
to
get
involved.
Mark
Lloyd
volunteered
to
be
the
point
of
contact
and
has
had
a
number
of
meetings
with
Todd

Point

Invitational
March
had
BAUE
at
Point
Lobos
for
one
of
the
regular
invitational

as
a
way
for
all
BAUE
members
to
meet,
have
fun,
and
dive
without
having
to
worry
about
getting
reservations.
The
reservations
are
handed
out
to
all
those
who
wish
to
attend,
till
they
run
out.
Those

Dionna
House,
our
own
BAUE
nurse,
will be putting together CPR and FirstAid Training for those
people that are
interested. Eventually
we can incorporate a
day on the Escapade to
practice rescues and
procedures with Jim
and his crew. Stay
tuned!!
