PAOLO PORTOGHESI
The Architecture of Listening
Portoghesi's works stand out as a movement of tender growth/resistance
against voluntary and obstinate amnesia unable to understand the secret
forces of the earth. Ultimately, Portoghesi strives to achieve a
Geoarchitecture inspired by a different mentality, one which talks of changes
to one's Being in the world, where dwelling and building are indissolubly
linked to Being. He follows on from Heidegger, Holderlin and, even before
them, Goethe and Palladio. Listening and ecology meet through ethical
discourse on the place of dwelling and illuminate the hidden face of
architecture that lives in the minds and hearts of all humans, revealing one
of the oldest and most universal forms of religion: collective memory. More
than a hundred built works and designs in Italy, Germany, France, Palestine,
Nigeria and China narrate the differences in Paolo Portoghesi's creative
designs. The book uses two methods to critically examine these works:
history and listening. In 2005, reacting polemically to the irrational trends of
the turn of the century, Portoghesi proposed the need for a Geoarchitecture
based on geophilosophy, an architecture that still doesn't exist. An
architecture of responsibility that inverts the direction taken by current
developments, commits itself to giving human settlements back their choral
nature, and builds a New Alliance between mankind and the environment.

Architecture and Interiors - Realizations
The Author of “Roman Interiors” and “Interior Architectures” proposes in this
book some of its most attractive solutions of living: his architecture, almost
musical, has a simple poetry and a strong sense of art. Just an emotion.
Stefano Dorata born in Rome, architect and designer, worked as a
researcher and lecturer at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of
Rome. Its interior design studio has quickly attracted the attention of the
public through a number of projects in Italy, in many European countries,
America and the Middle East, has been published on several occasions in
the media. In 1996 a book titled “Roman Interiors”, followed by “Interior
Architectures”, published by Gangemi, collect his most significant
achievements in the capital.

GASPAR VAN WITTEL: VIEWS OF ITALY
Cesare Lampronti Gallery Exhibition
On show at the Cesare Lampronti Gallery in London: 28 June – 28 July
2013. Gaspar van Wittel succeeded above all other artists in capturing the
lights, mysteries and poetry of Rome, skilfully bringing together the painting
technique of the Dutch School he had learnt during his apprenticeship with
the intense emotional character of Roman 17th Century art, which he had
encountered upon his arrival in Italy.

UNESCO ITALIA
Italian Sites of the World Heritage List
through the work of 14 photographers
Catalogue of the UN.IT exhibition presented for the first time at the National
Central Library of Rome from 14 February to 14 March 2008.
In addition to the original introductory texts, which are also included in this
new edition, the catalogue of the first exhibition included photographs of the
41 Italian sites that were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List at
that time. In later years as more sites were inscribed they were also added
to the exhibition and the expanded catalogue, at each edition. The additions
for 2013 are the Italian part of Monte San Giorgio (added to the Swiss part,
which was already inscribed), the prehistoricpile-dwelling sites in the Alps
(in Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria, and Slovenia), and The
Lombards in Italy: Their places of power (568-774 AD); all have been
photographed by Fossati, Guerrieri, and Romano. Some additional texts
have been inserted in view of the substantial size of this update, the
characteristics of the sites, and the number of photographs. The earlier texts
remain unchanged.

JEWISH CATACOMBS
The Jews of Rome
This slender well-written book is packed with easy-toread information about
the structure of the Jewish community of Rome and the politics and history
of the city where it developed and grew. Not an easy task because very little
documentation has survived to the present day; Elsa Laurenzi is honest
enough to inform the reader of this difficulty and avoids making “easy” but
unfounded statements. Instead she takes the reader by the hand and
illustrates the customs and culture of a society that was part of a much larger
society, as different as it was tolerant, one that knew how to integrate
different and contrasting forms of reality. Using a glossary inserted into the
text, she uses the sources available – ancient authors, epigraphic texts,
archaeological remains – to provide useful and accurate explanations about
a terminology not everyone may be familiar with.

MARILYN FOREVER
With this book Giuliana Mariniello develops her photographic research about
the theme of the representation of the “feminine” through the image of
Marilyn Monroe, the icon par excellence of our culture. The volume contains
30 colour photographs and texts by the author and Bruno di Marino, JohnRaphael Staude and Silvio Raffo. The “Marilyn” phenomenon provides an
opportunity for reflecting on the world of images and the appearance-reality
dichotomy in the contemporary world.

ROME
A Brief History of an Ancient Empire
For many centuries the rule of Rome changed the geography, changed the
subject peoples, changed the power, changed civil society. From the Seven
hills and marshes of the Capitol to the hegemony over the known world.
From the rough shepherds of Latium to Julius Caesar. From the furrow torn
between Romulus and Remus to the majesty of the Roman law. So Rome
changed and Rome with the Romans. And the world. All this led Rome, for
several centuries, to not be content with what it had achieved. Until the
decline of morals and the conquest of the known world made its unlimited
borders vulnerable.

ITALIAN CONTEMPORARY ART
VENUES
This guide is a useful tool for visitors and contemporary art enthusiasts; it
provides a comprehensive list of contemporary art centres in Italy, indicates
new fields of specialised research, and presents potentially new itineraries
of contemporary art venues. This book provides information about public
and private museums and similar institutions, foundations, and publicly
financed permanent exhibition venues open to the public; all these venues
have been surveyed, selected and classified according to criteria and
methods which, although different, are all based on the approach and
unitary logic adopted by the study. The 2012 edition is an innovative tool
and not merely an updated version of the previous edition published in 2003.
Its premise is based on the increasingly important role played by
contemporary art in Italy in recent years together with the already
consolidated reality of Italian heritage. The policies of the Directorate
General for the Landscape, Fine Arts, Architecture and Contemporary Art
implemented in the Plan for contemporary art are intended to provide more
in-depth and comprehensive information regarding their status in modern
society and the role they play in creating Italy's cultural identity, a role
expressed fully in the dialectic relationship between architecture - as well
as art - and the country's historical, environmental and landscape heritage.

BUILDING “IN A STYLE”
Italian Architecture in Alexandria, Egypt
This book investigates the design and construction methods imported by
the Italian “maitres d'oeuvre” active in Egypt between the nineteenth and
the twentieth centuries, particularly in Alexandria; it also includes an in-depth
study of the work of the architect Mario Rossi whose most important work
was the design of mosques. His personality and work, reconstructed in their
space-time context, are taken as case studies based on these and other
residential buildings in Alexandria and elsewhere. This study defines two
prevalent approaches which swing between a tendency to import ideas from
Italy and a tendency to assimilate local tradition. Convinced that
contemporary architecture must also develop its own stylistic and
constructional characteristics in accordance with multiple local traditions,
the Author shows how in Rossi's work the complex global phenomenon of
eclecticism - as an historic moment of transition and transformation
animated by the search for a “new style” capable of being defined as
“modern” and profoundly marked by new technologies and materials
imported from Europe - was the expression of a “crisis” in the language of
building which she nevertheless believes appeared to be resisted by the
cultural continuity of typological processes.

MLAC Index 2000 - 2012
Museum of Contemporary Art Lab
Since 1986, the MLAC Museum of Contemporary Art Lab, situated inside
the Sapienza University of Rome represents a reference and meeting point
among artists, art historians, curators and students. With more than 300
events over the last decade, the MLAC is among the most interesting on
the international scene for its museum and educational format intended to
assert the centrality of the direct relationship with the artist and the work of
art. As defined by Simonetta Lux who created and guided it during these
years, the MLAC is a relational micro-territory ahead of its time and unique
for its ability to combine education, scientific research, historical-critical and
artistic creation processes. At the MLAC, an exhibition was never just a
show: interactive lessons, meetings with artists, roundtables, publications
and reportages have systematically enhanced the exhibition period by
helping to shed light on the complex and difficult artistical creation and
critical action processes. Through the essays of those who designed and
administered it, and through those trained as curators and art historians,
this book outlines the history, project and format of its first phases and
activity centres (1986-2000), with a focus on the last 12 years, chronicled
through a fully illustrated critical, thematic and chronological repertoire: the
MLAC Index 2000-2012.

DOCUMENTATION OF
MEDITERRANEAN ANCIENT THEATRES
Athena’s activities in Mérida
Ancient theaters are in many ways one of the most extraordinary legacies
that past civilizations have left us. No less extraordinary is how well this
architectural type is distributed around the entire Mediterranean basin, or
the number of theaters that regularly host performances and shows.
Prospectively, the survival of ancient theaters will oscillate between these
two extremes: on the one hand, a contemporary reuse that keeps their
functions alive along with their cultural, social and even economic
relevance, but in the medium to long run will lead to inevitable progressive
decay; on the other hand, an uncompromising conservation that by
eliminating all manmade pressures would indeed be effective in preserving
the structure but would nevertheless condemn it to an inexorable death,
culturally, socially and economically. All of these considerations, albeit with
different levels of priority and different needs, make it clear that the problem
must be addressed as a whole, chiefly through the design, testing and
concrete application of innovative management tools capable of dealing
case by case with the complex issues we have outlined.

PAINTED AJANTA Vol. 1& 2
Studies on the Techniques and the
Conservation of Indian Rock Art Site
The archaeological site of Ajanta in the Indian state of Maharashtra is made
up of five temples and twenty-four Buddhist monasteries, hewn in the rock
wall of the Waghora river valley. Their construction dates back to about 200
BC and the shrines were a focus of spirituality for centuries. Then, around
650 AD they were abandoned and gradually forgotten, until they were
rediscovered by a British tiger-hunting expedition in 1819. Today, the Ajanta
complex is a UNESCO world heritage site and, with its treasure of paintings
and sculptures, is considered an exceptional repertory of the origins and
evolution of classical Indian art.

RAGUSA PIETÀ
History and restoration
This book tells the story of a painting that was recognized as carrying the
signature of Michelangelo Buonarroti in 1868 by his greatest expert of the
19th century, Hermann Grimm. After being exhibited at the Metropolitan
Museum in New York in 1886, attributed to the same painter, the painting
then disappeared without trace.
In 2010, the panel was brought to the attention of art historians once again,
after a careful document research traced its history, from the Italian
Renaissance workshop that brought the painting to life in the mid sixteenth
century, to the Bishopric of Ragusa in Dalmatia, where it was located at the
beginning of the seventeenth century and from there to museums in Berlin
and New York.

THE RADICAL CITY
OF LUDOVICO QUARONI
Ludovico Quaroni, one of the Italian leading masters of Italian modern
architecture, during the Sixties of the last century, involved his University
Chair, his assistants and the students of his university courses in his most
conceptual, utopian project: a linear city between Rome and Florence,
spreading up the Tiber Valley, the Chiana valley and the Casentino, an
immense indeterminate Continuum, a real Non-stop City, a landscape within
a landscape where the shape no longer corresponds to the activities
pursued within it, but conforms to lives lived in a fluid society, which is
submerged in a resilient democracy, possesses no ideologies but is mobile
and interchangeable, and extremely rich environmentally and materially. In
March 1968, with the outbreak of the students’ movement, everything came
to a halt as immobilised in the harsh light of a lightning bolt in the dark.
Quaroni’s utopian vision, crushed by events, nevertheless was able, so far,
to vividly live in the memory of his former students and assistants. Fifty years
after the abrupt end of that utopian and educational project it is time to
collect the left memories and the few left documents to fix its presence in
the history of the European Radical Movements of architecture. A second
issue, Quaroni is burning, complements the understanding of the complex
and deeply Italian Quaroni’s way to live and intend Modernity.

ITALIAN MODERNISMS
The studies in this book focus on Italian twentieth-century architecture, in
particular design and construction techniques. The descriptions of the
worksites and building processes provide a much better and clearer picture
of the different modernist styles that existed in Italy; they also reveal the
‘thin red line' that characterised an univocal construction method: mixed
masonry enriched (and not replaced) by reinforced concrete – a technique
well suited to small artisanal worksites. This was a mild version of modern
construction, in line with the role construction played in slowing down an
industrialisation process which in Italy was, in itself, slow. Each chapter
illustrates a specific aspect of the history of construction and highlights
several new issues involving architecture in general: the important tectonic
similarities which one way or another link the Littorio style and the several
different kinds of rationalisms in the thirties; the continuity between the
autarchic experimentation and the techniques used in reconstruction; the
connection between the large-scale works designed by engineers and the
architectures of the fifties and sixties, which now appear to be one of the
mainstays of the unique Italian Style.

PAOLO RADI. GLANCING UP
Radi rediscovered the physical relationship with matter, the pleasure of
amalgamating the wet impasto and of pressing the sheets with his own
hands. He merged the tradition of the artisan’s workshop with the styles
of his expressive “maniera”. From this point of view this hand-made
paper was no longer a simple medium. Paradoxically, Radi is a
Renaissance artist. Behind his way of working one can discern the great
historic tradition of Tuscany, discover the interest for man-individual and
the study of history, feel the pleasure of observation of natural
phenomena and of the laws that govern them. First of all his link to
material is alchemic: Radi does not limit himself to using material, he
creates it.
The artist kneads the principle material of these unpublished works –
paper – directly with his own hands; it is a pre-material, thought and
produced to best satisfy the needs of his creativity.

SPORT DESIGN SYSTEM
Sport belongs to everyone. It can be enjoyed individually not only when you need
to escape your daily routine and make space for entertainment, but also for your
physical wellbeing, to rediscover new values in nature. It can be used as a
personal challenge or against imaginary adversaries, but it can also fulfil a need
to socialise around a common interest. Whether experienced individually or in a
group, outdoors or indoors, in the air, in the water or on the ground, throughout
all four seasons in the year, it attracts attention for its use of specially designed
tools. Over time, the latter have gradually been moulded by current technological
research, since competitive performances are achieved by continually perfecting
equipment and accessories which, at times, become so advanced, they are not
admitted into the competitions. The research analysed behaviour, customs and
sport life styles. It aimed to reveal the different aspects which Sport brings
together, and the role of Design in the continual product innovation, typical of this
sector. The data we collected highlighted how sport in Italy has rocketed sky-high
from the first decades of the 20th century, when Futurism sensed the very
essence of modernity in the emerging phenomenon of sport. Recent years have
seen the heading sports vocation among the items assessed by the annual
survey by the newspaper, Sole24Ore, on the quality of life in Italian provinces,
attaching an important role to Sport in the economic and social system of an area.

THE ENIGMA LANDSCAPE
“A certain melancholy and solitude of the individual in present-day society
appears to be the central theme of my research. Mine is atmospheric
painting, which though using a language that is only seemingly fluid and
rapid – belonging to the perceptual dimension of daily life in the modern
era – reveals the aura-like aspect of the images and the dimension of
enchantment of our perception of the world, which unlike beauty is not a
relative concept, linked to time, fashions, tastes, latitudes etc., but is
something spiritual, which is in every one of us and can be reawakened
by art”.

the most advanced technologies in the field of survey for digital
documentation of the architectural and archaeological heritage. An overview
of these studies in nine different countries, in Europe, Asia and America,
dealing with architectural remains interesting from an architectural
viewpoint, shows the significant results achieved through specific devices.
The theme of the knowledge of Heritage is of primary importance within the
legislative framework relating to the World Heritage Site protected by
UNESCO; through the various researches we took an initial census of the
more proper methodologies for the documentation of the sites architecturally
and historically of interest.
In this context and for the development of the research, these methods as
well as becoming a point of reference for scholars, they could also be the
purpose of the discussion with themes concerning conservation and
possible restoration or re-use of many sites, in line with the requirements
by UNESCO Management Plans.

THE SONG OF THE SEA
FRUITS OF SICILY
Since the first impact the book donates strong and pleasant emotions,
through colourful images and deep thoughts that immediately inspire joy
and optimism.
In narrowly reading all pages the reader will discover a common thread
carefully meditated in which the author, while explaining the meaning of
abstract art, takes the reader on the exciting journey towards freedom, the
same freedom that is well known to all the people who deeply love the sea.
“Where the sea becomes darker, I was told that the solution to all the
contradictions of life was just there, in that sea. My Mediterranean.
Just open the window and you have all the sea for yourself.
Free of charge. To have the sea - the Mediterranean - is a lot, when you
have nothing. As a loaf of bread for the hungry”.
The bare, definitive, passionate words by Jean-Claude Izzo may well be a
final comment to Daniela Troina Magrí's work. In her painting she talks
about the sea and the images of which her mind is nourished are those of
a particular sea, the Mediterranean, a place that is inextricably Earth and
Water, a sea made of many seas overlooking peoples of East and West
with their stories that intersect and intertwine inextricably.

THE REBIRTH OF MAN
OF ALDO CIABATTI
Vocations are always rooted in childhood as the biographies of so many
musicians, scientists and artists go to prove. And this was certainly the case for
Aldo Ciabatti, who loved scribbling and painting on every available surface as a
child, even drawing attention to this in a recent work: “My dream as a child… was
to paint.” However, his education steered his life to other shores and many
decades were to pass before he could dedicate himself completely to the dream
of his youth. After the second world war, these very skills led to him attending the
Istituto Professionale Margaritone d’Arezzo from 1949 to 1956, a formative period
not only for his acquisition of the chasing technique, but also for his studies in the
history of art and, above all, physics and chemistry as well as mathematics under
a teacher who inspired his love of astronomy, as Aldo himself wrote in a recent
letter to me: “My favourite subjects were sculpture, chasing, art history, physics,
chemistry and mathematics. Prof. Carlo Paci, the chemistry and physics teacher,
persuaded me to take a course in analytical chemistry so I learnt how to use
electrolysis to separate hydrogen from water. I also learnt how to oxidate metal
using hydrosulphuric acid. That’s why oxidised metals appear in my paintings
and why I have such a strong interest in modern physics. Along with numbers
my maths teacher, Prof. Severi, taught me respect and good manners (…). He
taught me to observe the sky and got me interested in astronomy”.

THE VOICE IN THE WILDERNESS
WANG LIN’S COLLECTION OF POEMS
I can not smash every obstacle, nor does it every obstacle crush me, so I
do not regard myself as heroes, never boasted wise. I'm just one person.
Person is not required to explain: he is the essence of living, through, and
then quit the scene. If you're lucky, you can recall the last moments of self.
Remember must not companionship, do not need companionship.
Poetry is a person born of speaking to the dead, is preparing memoirs for
quit the scene. The face to the self, say to sad and happy, say sentiment
and the pursuit, of self-understanding, and the secret that understanding
utter self. Because the face to the self, becomes ineffable thing seems to
be speak out, become incomprehensible seems understandable.
Poem, as human other existence, when you are willing, you get
interposition, and more a living law. That is in addition to daily life, you can
live in poetry of the illusion, imagery, words, rhyme and rhythm.
I write poetry, but I'm not a poet, so do not ask myself as the poet's birthright.
In the wild, outside poet city, I feel more comfortable, more freeness.
Poem, originally belonged to a person's life, printed anthology only one
purpose that is to communicate between individuals. As for why, I do not
know. Perhaps happiness need to share and the pain need to share,
perhaps one is born animals that communicate with each other.

WETLANDS
Proposals for the Venice’s cassa di colmata A
During Venice’s 1960s portions of the lagoon have fenced-in (like
boxes/casse) and further filled up (colmata) with excavated mud. Industries
rose on some while, due to the overall industrial plan failure, the A-named
Cassa was kept free. Its ground is flat, the edges merge into the lagoon and
faces the most beautiful skyline: Venice and its bell towers. In the 2000s
Venice got a sustainable water-purifier, the last phase of which works by
bio-depuration, allowing the excess water to flow into the lagoon.
The plant will be sited in Fusina, close by the cassa di colmata A, designated
for this finishing system.

Higher Italian Education in Art and Music
Special Issue/the National Arts Award
The national arts system is a rather complex and ragged world, which sets
itself the difficult mission of being a “bridge” with the society of tomorrow
through theoretical knowledge and artistics practices that are not separated
from the search for a poetry that is always intimately present in humans and
the world in which we live. Restarting from young people is the most
important imperative for countering the sadness of a period like today, which
is without memory and is killing dreams and erasing memories, to counter
the ethical desert of appearance in a liquid and rarefied world: this is the
only real challenge that our country must win.

100 OBJECTS OF ITALIAN DESIGN
LA TRIENNALE DI MILANO
ACHILLE PINELLI’S ROME
WATERCOLOURS 1832-1835
Author: Silvana Annicchiarico
Author: Maria Elisa Tittoni (edited by)
The permanent exhibition in Milan Triennale uses the objects
that have made Italian design famous all over the world to tell
this story. The exhibition is a way to discover the history of a
country which, thanks to its creativity and design, is once again
a leader on the world stage; a role it intends to pursue and
develop by welcoming all and every contribution.
Between 1832 and 1835 the painter created a series of
approximately two hundred watercolours, all of which are
conserved in the collections of the Museo di Roma, depicting the
city's churches, with episodes from the daily life in the foreground.
Many buildings which no longer exist today are depicted in these
views, and they provide precious evidence of corners of the city
that have disappeared, or changed radically over the course of the
years.

A SEMI SERIOUS HISTORY OF
LAPAROSCOPY
ABU GHRAIB. ABUSE OF POWER
Author: Nicola Basso
Author: Maria Elisa Tittoni, Federica Pirani (edited by)
Laparoscopy is the new technique that has revolutionized
surgery during the last 15 years. The so called “key hole”
surgery has had a profound impact not only on surgery but it
has imposed a new way of conceiving therapy: the minimal
invasive therapy.
Susan Crile had already stumbled in his artistic career, with the
consequences of the war: his apocalyptic fires of war, made
over a ten-day journey in the conflict zones of Iraq in 1991,
restored landscapes and fiery sterile, hallucinated, senseless .
Now, again, the war. This time the unbearable disgust revealed
to the whole world by the images of hell at Abu Ghraib.

gathered documents and contributions about Design search,
developement and project. The contributions of the people
involved, each of them in his point of view and know how,
adding to the contributions didactic materials, has been

ADVENTURES OF PINOCCHIO
Illustrated by Franco Staino
AESTHETICS OF TASTE
A Japanese Art
Author: Carlo Collodi
Author: Iko Damiani, Salvatore Damiani (edited by)
The tale of the wooden puppet who longs to be a real boy and the
old woodcarver who created him. This new edition brings a fresh
and inviting look that invites readers to rediscover the story on its
own terms and not the Disney version. It is not an easy tale to
digest, with lots of mistakes made by the young Pinocchio, and
hardships around every corner for dear Gepetto, but along the way
we understand that it many ways we are all trying to escape life as
a puppet, with strings pulled by those with bad intent and are just
as fascinated by a dream of freedom and free will.
“The Aesthetics of Taste. A Japanese Art” will embark on a
fascinating journey, in which that which is beautiful rivals with
that which is good, and the “beauty” of a dish is an essential
component of its “goodness” and vice-versa. If we consider this,
it is easier for us to appreciate the attention for detail that goes
well beyond the dish, from the choice of the crockery to the
place where the meal is consumed.

ANGELO ALIGIA
WAITING FOR THE WIND
ANTONIO SANNINO. UNDRESSED
Author: Andrea Romoli Barberini (edited by)
Author: Barbara Genio (edited by)
“Waiting for the wind” is the title of the exhibition of the latest
works by the master artist Angelo Aligia. The exhibition presents
an interesting cross-section of his cultural and artistic
perspectives, his recent experimentation and choice of one of
the endless expressive possibilities provided by contemporary
art, an art he interprets with rare talent.
I start from a dream vision of the element of nature that I
represent, the color is suggested by a visual excitement. The
tract is almost always an instint action. I chose to name my
works with names of persons thus creating metaphors. I avoid
in this way to outline the profile of each one of them. The viewer
is free to discover the true face due to lack of anatomical
reference. [Antonio Sannino]

ARCHITECTURAL DECORATIONS OF
THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY IN
THE AMERICAS
ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE
ITINERARIES Barcellona, Lyon, Paris
color illustrated
Author: Giovanni Battista Cocco, Cesarina Siddi (edited by)
Author: Carlo Severati (edited by)
The three itineraries in this volume are devoted to Barcelona,
Lyon and Paris. They do not describe the cities overall but
rather offer a selection of projects that illustrate how the cities'
urban fabrics, spaces and buildings can be reread and
rewritten. In this sense, each itinerary reveals the intensity with
which cities update their languages offering structural resources
that can respond to the new needs of contemporary society both on local and international levels.
The Research on Decoration and History of Architecture in the
Americas in the twentieth century was proposed and
coordinated by Carlo Severati and financed by Roma Tre
University. The scope of the historical and documentary
research was to find obvious matches between the decorations
on works built between 1910 and 1950 by the urban bourgeois
in large and small towns and cities in several countries in the
Americas, from Chile to Canada.

ARCHITECTURE AND POLITICS
ARCHITECTURE AND TOWN PLANNING
OPERATING INSTRUCTION
Author: Bonicalzi, Galliani, Antonio Piva (edited by)
Author: Ettore Maria Mazzola
If considerations about the relationship between architecture
and politics are to take shape around the problematic question
of what the current situation really is, it is necessary to stress
how the interpretative elements of philosophy, psychology and
the social sciences are just as necessary with regard to
architecture and the city as are the operational aspects of
planning and design.
Ettore Mazzola observed with righteous indignation that
notwithstanding the utter failure of modernism to provide an
enduring architecture that serves the Common Good, modernist
architects continue with unrepentant arrogance to claim
exclusive ownership of the idea of modernity. [Samir Younés]

ART AND NATURE
Author: Daniela Pastore (a cura di)
Author: Petra Bernitsa (edited by)
The work is divided into three sections: “Historical Journey
movements and tendencies”, “The Contemporary
Protagonist”, “The New Generation”. Time has worked in
unfavour of the old continent since the arrival of Le Corbusier
who illuminated generations of architects, as it did in the case
of Alberto Sartoris (1936-37). Modern Argentinian architects
are truly sons of the land that has received them. Argentinian
architecture is principally characterized by a strict geometrical
design marked by imagination, joy and colour.
The Nature / Art relationship appears over throughout history,
but always in different ways which mirror the spirit of the times.
In an epoch such as the one which we are living, we search for
a new alliance between Man and the Earth which permits a
peaceful coexistance.

ARTENA

ISRAELI CONTEMPORARY ART
Author: Ettore Maria Mazzola, Samir Younès
Author: Ruth Cats (edited by)
There are places where natural form and urban form
reciprocally enhance each other. Artena has embodied such a
successful con-formation revealing the mythic image of a city
embracing the hill, where Santa Croce’s bell towers are the only
architectural elements that detach themselves from the urban
fabric to accentuate this remarkable landscape.
Israeli is an absolute place: this magnetism is immediately
apparent to anyone who visit the country, speak to its
inhabitants, take in the unique atmosphere of the place where
the three great monotheist religions developed and still confront
each other, even today: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. This
catalogue explore topics extremely emblematic and meaningful:
diversified identities, conflict and desire for peace.

planning and governing contemporary cities?
The world of contemporary art is changing quickly, bringing the
need for expression with authentic language and with clearly
defined and comprehensible ideas to an increasingly attentive
audience, more and more than to the fore.

CAPUCHIN MUSEUM
CARACAS
Author: Emanuele Martinez, Marco Pizzo
Author: Giuseppe Imbesi, Elisenda Vila
The Museum of the Friars Minor Capuchin host a series of
sections devoted to its origins and history as well as the life of
those who joined the order and drew inspiration from the
example of extraordinary Capuchin saints. The museum is also
a new repository for the artistic and historical legacy of the
Capuchins of Rome and the region of Lazio, as its rooms are in
fact designed not only to house and exhibit the various items
but also to ensure their preservation.
This study is particularly important because Caracas is a city in
the process of continuous transformation reflecting the
dynamics of our age and heralding contradictions. It is located
in a narrow valley overflowing with the urban sprawl triggered
by the all too rapid construction of a modern metropolis now
tasked with tackling future challenges.

CASTEL DEL MONTE
New comparative theory about the
monument identity
CASTLE OF TABIANO
A thousand years of history, legends, in the
Pallavicino fiefs
Author: Fallacara, Occhinegro (edited by)
Author: Giacomo Corazza
Castel Del Monte is one of the most visited touristic destination
in Southern Italy, for its natural beauties, for the fascination that
its imposing polygonal mass arouses, its historical importance
and, last but not least, for the series of questions about its real
utilitas.
The aim of this book is to illustrate the principal events that took place
in Tabiano Castle and in its village. I have examined the old archives,
but in the middle ages the documents are scarce; even the parish
archives before the Concilio di Trento and so are the notarial acts
are poor and the chronicles of the time are full of gaps. There are still
many mysteries about the origin of the castle, the arrival of Pallavicino
and the battles in that place. I have tried to collect and to order the
documents that I have found and what has been written about the
events concerning the castle since the 11th century until today.

CENTRAL MUSEUM OF THE
RISORGIMENTO
Historical and artistic guide
Author: Rosetta Gozzini (edited by)
Author: Marco Pizzo (edited by)
Cecilia Paredes, after her firstmoves in Italy with IILA (the
Italian-Latin-American Institute) and after her first solo exhibition
in Italy at the Galleria Michela Rizzo, is back exhibiting with us
the fruit of a serious and mutual appreciation effort. Paredes
already ravished the Italian public back in 2005 with her Costa
Rica at the Latin American-IILA pavilion of the 51st Venice
Biennial. Today she has earned her space on the European
scene and we are honoured to present the exhibition “The Final
Garden”.
The Central Museum of the Risorgimento was proposed at the
end of the nineteenth century to illustrate the deeds and leading
figures involved in the historic events that led to Italian
unification. These items have today become genuine
documents, bearing specific and evocative witness to the main
events and key figures in the story of Italy's epic Risorgimento.
The Museum's exhibits are a sort of archive preserving the
memory of the Risorgimento.

Art as a ‘shortcut’ to achieve reciprocal appreciation between
Christianity and Islam and for peace. The effervescent, hopefilled moment of the new millennium is the right time to take

pages of the centuries-old history of humanity. The Jubilee
marking the eight hundredth anniversary (1198/595H
1998/1419H) of the foundation of the Order of the Most Holy

CHURCH OF THE ENGLISH COLLEGE
IN ROME
Its history, its restoration
Author: Cesare Cundari and Gian Marco Jacobitti (edited by)
Author: Various Authors
In 1991, an interdisciplinary team surveyed and studied the
Church of Miracles of the Holy Virgin of the Sign in Podol’sk,
Moscow soon after its reconsecration in the USSR. The team
included university teachers and technicians, officials from the
Ministry of Cultural Heritage and the Environment, and art
conservation experts.
The book is a compendium of papers illustrating the studies,
surveys, and overall project. The project was also participated
by the Moscow Institute of Architecture.
This special publication is the occasion of the reopening of the
restored church of the Venerable English College in Rome. It is
in three parts. The first section is historical, a collection of
articles on subjects related to the origins of the College; the
second part is photographic: a celebration in images of the
finished church; the final chapters explain the work of the
architects and artists, covering divers issues from project
management to the philosophy behind the chosen degree of
restoration and level of intervention.

CIRCONFERENZA COSMICA
CITIES OF NEW YORK
Author: Elisabetta Giovagnoni (edited by)
Author: Maria Teresa Cerretelli (edited by)
Cosmic circle is the title of an exhibition of four artists, Bizhan
Bassiri, Mario Lamorgese, Maurizio Mochetti and Marco Tirelli,
inspired by the geometric forms that have always occupied a
special place in the human mind: the circle and the sphere.
The exhibition “Cities of New York” tells the story of then and of
today, in a vision that from destruction moves to reconstruction,
focusing on what was inevitably lost but also the power of
memory.

CLAUDIO ASQUINI
Tainted Love
CLOTI RICCIARDI
Author: Augusto Pieroni (edited by)
Author: Simonetta Lux, Stella Santacatterina (edited by)
Tainted Love: “sick love” is the Italian translation of the title of
this wonderful song by Soft Cell (recently reinterpreted first by
Marilyn Manson and then by the Pussycat Dolls). This very
song will disclose the doors to the new works by Claudio
Asquini: in fact we will often find in them the notion of an ideal
passion altered or filtered in unexpected ways. But let's proceed
gradually.
...Cloti Ricciardi today reaffirms the modern pre-eminence of
the intentionality of art's planning stage and the resumption of
the aesthetic experience that plans, or, better yet,
foreshadows... [Tommaso Trini]

COLOURS OF THE AVANT-GARDE
ROMANIAN ART: 1910-1950
Author: Erwin Kessler (edited by)
Author: Scolaro, Callegari, Costa, Pizzo (edited by)
This is decidedly not an exhibition thoroughly and honestly
dedicated to the avant-garde, not even to the complex and
contradictory, Romanian one. Seen from the purist, advanced
avant-garde outposts, the exhibition is almost disloyal. It not
only starts with modernist works of the 1910s, long before the
Dadaist European debut through the agency of the lunatic
proceedings at Cabaret Voltaire, but it also ends with pseudoavant-garde, realist-socialist collages produced in 1950s, long
after the official expiration of the properly historical avantgarde.

COMPETITION IDEAS FOR THE
ITALIAN PAVILION AT EXPO SHANGHAI
Author: Ettore Maria Mazzola, Samir Younès
Author: Franco Purini (edited by)
Continuity is judiciously approved where architectural
production has rationally been proven successful, and change
is carefully accepted where and when there is a rational need
to depart from a practice that has failed. Such is the rationality
of tradition, and this is why the University of Notre Dame
teaches traditional architecture as a modern practice.
Many outstanding and exceptional proposals were submitted
by designers who rose to the challenge of creating a pavilion
worthy of Italy's commitment to improve the quality of life in
cities and the urban environment. This book is our homage to
those designers.

CORRADO ANTICOLI

CULTURAL LANDSCAPES
Author: Angelo Bucarelli
Author: Camilla Casonato, Rossella Salerno (edited by)
The scenic beauty, the rich artistic heritage, the variety of
traditions and communal identity that make it so only the
territory of Rome and its province, has always offered an
extraordinary source of inspiration for artists and intellectuals
from around the world. The history of Anticoli Corrado is, in
many ways, almost a symbol of this condition: a small town
became, over time, the crossroads of the grand tour and chosen
land of great painters and sculptors.
The theme of cultural landscapes, debated for some time in
Anglo-Saxon countries and in Europe, there is not many years
to the attention of the Italian company, equipped with many
different facets, is offered as a balance between the need for
an environment human scale, the memory and the desire of a
landscape area.

E-LEARNING FOR ARCHITECTURE
E-LEARNING QUALITY ASSURANCE
a multi perspective approach
Author: Rosalba Belibani, Stefano Panunzi
Author: Ricci, Baldazzi, Valle Baroz (edited by)
This research firmly believes in the idea that information science
tools and the On-Line System should be utilized in innumerable
ways in the various independent stages of an architect's
learning itinerary, but that they can never totally replace the
maieutic aspect of master-pupil relations, even if the masters,
due to the extraordinary capacities of computer science, can be
themselves multiplied, since, even though distant in space, they
can be visibly and audibly next to us in a shared environment,
even interacting with our own designs.
Quality in e-learning is connected to innovation, both in the
human resources and technological-didactics fields. The
evolution of didactics material and teaching methodology must
follow the rhythm to which technological tools, students'
background and cognitive models change and evolve, always
remembering the basic principles of traditional pedagogy.

ESTORICK COLLECTION OF MODERN
ITALIAN ART
ENIGMA OF THE “SUNFLOWER”
Critical reading of an architectural
masterpiece by Luigi Moretti
Author: Roberta Cremononcini (edited by)
Author: Ruggero Lenci
The artworks on display in the gallery not only testify to the
flourishing of remarkable creativity between 1900 and 1950, but
also celebrate a number of Italian movements that exerted a
substantial influence on foreign artists. The Italian Government,
and specifically the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, supports the
Collection and its numerous activities.
Luigi Moretti in the ‘Sunflower', strong of a passionate
knowledge of the laws of composition and aggregation of the
Baroque art, blows up its virtual volume, restarting from a
vacuum. Ruggero Lenci argues that the genesis of this masterly
work must be sought in a poetic translation of the Bernini's
theme of transition between nature and architecture. A theme
that materializes especially in the Fountain of the Four Rivers
in Piazza Navona.

Austro-hungarian photographs of the Great War
FIABESQUE. CITY OF FAIRY TALES
FANTASTIC IN EVENT PLANNING
Author: Giuseppe Talamo, Marco Pizzo (edited by)
Author: Massimiliano Pinucci, Enrico Cioccolini (edited by)
Can war shots be artistic? These photographs taken by a
special corps of the Austro-Hungarian army seem to provide an
affirmative answer. The elegant semplicity of the frame, the
classical postures and poses, the clarity of the light, the solemn
yet participative look on the subject’s faces require a rather
unique aesthetic culture, expecially if one compares them to the
more documentary, reportage-style photographs taken by the
Italian army.
Fiabesque book, with its sections and photographic
contributions, represents a compendium simple and easy to
understand the activities and potential of the City of Fairy Tales
event.
Conceiving a quality event, through the creation of contextscontainers within which to channel the attention of citizens and
media, in brief, is the framework purposive of the project
Fiabesque.

referred the artists in the specific movement of Form I, ie the

on the other hand, contains monographic essays on individual
artists: Clara Accardi, Peter Consagra, Piero Dorazio, Achille

expressive of each to the most recent developments.

FROM BABYLON TO SYBARIS
FROM BUILDING FABRIC TO CITY FORM
Author: Arcangelo Mafrici
Author: Francesca Valensise
We sometimes think that western civilization started in the
Mediterranean: in Greece and then in Rome. It didn't. We are
amazed when we discover that our history started 3000 years
before the birth of Christ, in Mesopotamia, between the Tigris
and the Euphrates, an area now occupied by Iraq and
neighbouring countries.
The ancient province of Calabria Further, one of the most
backward of the Kingdom of Naples, was discovered in its
natural values , urban, architectural and social, only after the
catastrophic earthquake of February 5, 1783. Through the
chronicles of travelers and scholars along time, and especially
a place where a state of emergency turns the disaster areas in
the territory of study and experimentation

Sperimentale di Cinematografia - Cineteca Nazionale and the
Grand Orient of Italy to mark the bicentennial celebrations of the
birth of Garibaldi. The book comes with a DVD of the film La
presa di Roma and Il piccolo garibaldino restored by the Centro
Sperimentale di Cinematografia - Cineteca Nazionale.
The theme of the square (and its representation), revisited in a
charming historical background that accompanies the visitor is
the heart of the show and it is the engine of attraction and the
centerpiece pregnant. The exhibition allows to explore in depth
the polyphonic dimension of the square, a privileged place of
encounter and exchange, dialectic and tension, market and
mysticism but also of artistic and aesthetics on the mysteries of
space and its geometry and perspective.

FROZEN IN TIME
The Mountain Photography of Vittorio Sella
FUKSAS ARCHITECT
Author: Harry, Cremononcini, Adams (edited by)
Author: Mario Pisani
The Estorick Collection brings a selection of photographs by
Vittorio Sella to London for the first time in many years. Sella's
images of the mountainous terrain of five continents are some
of the most breathtaking and beautiful images of their kind ever
taken - as well as astonishing feats from a technical point of
view.
“Massimiliano Fuksas is a personality whose means of
expression is architecture. He is entitled to this merit. The
architecture he has produced is a self-portrait in which his
character traits are evident; impetuosity, which in some cases
becomes vehemence, the need to astonish and amaze, the
desire to work in depth”. [Paolo Portoghesi]

The Garden City, as development in an environmental sense
of the Greek colony and Roman, the French bastide, earth
walled Florentine villa nueva Spanish, the nowe miasto Polish,
the German neue stadt, the Czechoslovak novy sad, to the town
of colonization Spanish central and South America.
This book presents a less known side of Garibaldi campaigns
for human rights by pursuing a policy of peace and solidarity.
His principle goal, at a European level, was the creation of a
federation of States willing to resolve their mutual controversies
in a friendly way, while at a national level, his wish was for
changes aimed at improving the living conditions of the whole
population through reforms that ranged from universal suffrage
to the freedom to form associations.

GHETTO REVEALS ROME
GIOVANNA PICCIAU
Author: Luca Fiorentino
Author: Giovanna Picciau
This monuments of the jewish area in Rome are from the more
than three centuries of constraint and they rest on ancient
structures, those which two thousand years ago surrounded the
Circus Flaminius. What you can see, what you can think and
how you can follow the path of memory between reason and
fantasy.
“I’ve always painted. It’s as if the paintings act as counterpoint.
Synthesis and very often also antithesis, to my daily reality and
to the daily reality of every man (or woman). I have painted a
great deal in all the places in which I have lived. It is all, or
nearly all in this book”. [G.P.]

GIOVANNI ALBANESE. WORKS
GUIDE TO UNDERGROUND ROME
Author: Achille Bonito Oliva (edited by)
Author: Carlo Pavia
Catalog of the exhibition held from 31 January to 30 March
2013, this book contains pictures of the latest installations by
Giovanni Albanese, eclectic artist and multimedia among the
most interesting Italian. Works, as Achille Bonito Oliva writes in
the text “Eloquent machines and the Columbus egg” on the
catalog published by Gangemi, “organized on a circular
program, to which the public can access, but staying on the
threshold”.
In its long history, the Milan Triennale has always followed
developments in the field of applied arts; from the thirties to the
post-war years, during the reconstruction years and the
country's economic miracle and later during the economic and
energy crisis of the seventies. Since the eighties, Milan has
increasingly become an international centre of design. The
Triennale played a leading role in organizing important
qualitative events that have enhanced the city's image.

GUIDELINES

heritage sites
Author: Various Authors
Author: Various Authors
Even before the administrative provisions and practical
guidelines are issued for orienting the complex problems of
structural safety of monuments and works of art situated in
zones with high seismic risk in Italy, which now includes most
of the national territory, the Guidelines have created an in-depth
scientific and technical reflection appropriately aimed at
restoration of this heritage.
These Guidelines are intended for all those who, in whatever
capacity (regulators, financiers, designers, site managers,
testers) are involved with, or responsible for, the accessibility
of cultural heritage sites, in particular architects and engineers,
public employees or private entrepreneurs.

HEROES FROM THE SEA
HISTORY AND VISION
History of the National Dance Academy
Author: Lombardi Satriani, Paoletti (edited by)
Author: Andrea Porcheddu (edited by)
This report can only be a technical contribution focusing on
some facts un-known, sometimes forgotten or ignored but
offering food fot thought. From the moment the two Riace
Statues arrived on the scene, winning the heart of the public
and their own space in the international press, many scholars
have formulated working hypotheses.
This volume illustrates the history of the National Dance
Academy, founded by Jia Ruskaja, a Russian artist who arrived
in Italy in the twenties and became famous in the theatrical
world as a dancer and later as a director of modern dance
department of the Ballet School of the Teatro alla Scala.

CATALOGUE OF THE EXHIBITION
Author: Jacopo Mattia Alegiani (edited by)
Author: Guido Schlinkert, Egidio Cossa
In this series of works, Elena Pinzuti portrays conditions of the
soul, expressions of inner emotions using clear-cut, transparent
and suffused traits. As a starting point, Pinzuti, employs
photography to capture features and expressions that attract
her and re-interprets them on canvas endowing them a highly
expressionist character.
HybridAfrica, amused and attentive look on the African artistic
creativity, returns the image of an African reality in transit and
at the same time enacts the quirky creativity strategies that
define the search for new perspectives in contemporary African
societies.

I'M EVERYTHING YOU SEE
Author: Veronica Botticelli
Author: Various Authors
Catalogue of the exhibition held from 17 April to 23 May 2013.
“The space of my pictures is a mental space. It is the dialogue
that I have set up with memories, traces, music, colours and
steps that have interested my life. The public is there or has just
gone. I am there, in the background, always. In the dim lights.
Saying anyway and despite everything”. [Veronica Botticelli]
Iko Itsuki’s paintings on porcelain and Izumi Ōki’s glass
sculptures show the public of Rome, always ready to absorb
what other civilisations have to offer, a perfect fusion of two
ancient cultures, cultures that seem distant but actually have a
great deal in common, especially in terms of the refinement of
their past and contemporary artworks.

INTERNATIONAL MEETING
on illicit traffic of cultural property
ITALIAN ARCHITECTURE FOR CHINESE
CITY
Author: Jeannette Papadopoulos
Author: Franco Purini (edited by)
The International Workshop held in Rome on 2009 during Italy's
G8 Presidency offered an outstanding opportunity for experts,
academics and officials from various Countries and
international Organisations involved in the cultural sector to
meet and exchange news and views. Nowadays, an increasing
number of Countries is involved in the fight against illegal
trafficking of cultural properties.
The Chinese exhibition has been the most extraordinary event
ever organised on urbanisation, and has set a crucial challenge
to the world, including to Italy - which city model can you
imagine in the future? Italy took up the challenge, setting up a
pavilion on the “city of the future”, entitled “The City of Man,” in
which man becomes the main character, where the concept of
living plays a leading role.

ITALIAN BELVEDERE
ITTO KUETANI
The dream of the white and the stones of the past
Author: Achille Bonito Oliva
Author: Various Authors
The Italian art of the last decades on the one hand experiments
with new fields of technology and image, the other is part of the
broad lines of its tradition that runs from the Renaissance to the
present day. A voltage to the form, meaning the ability of
transfiguration of matter and port to the unveiling of an internal
sense, through the territories of Italian art in over five hundred
years, setting up so the thread can give identity to the image
Italian.
Itto Kuetani came to our country in 1969, driven by a passion
for sculpture and in quest for new inspiration. His first stop was
Rome, where he was fascinated by the grandeur of the marble
works in the Forum. From there, he went on to the quarries of
the Apuane Alps. But only on reaching Carrara did the sculptor
feel he had reached his destination - it was in the heart of
Tuscany that he was to find once again the majesty of ancient
Rome and the mastery of Renaissance craftsmen.

FORBIDDEN CITY PAINTER
Author: Claudio Strinati (edited by)
Author: Andrea Quattrini
This catalogue presents the work of one of the leading personalities
of contemporary Chinese art. With careful attention paid to Western
art, and especially to European realism, but also to recovering and
valorising the past of his own country, this artist has developed a
refined pictorial technique concentrating on large canvases. In
September 2004, Fang presented, first of the modern painters,
many of these works just inside the Forbidden City, in a play of
references between the real city and the one painted.
Andrea Quattrini offers us his Japan in thirty-two images. Thirtytwo portraits of modern Japan where you can see both the
traces of the continuing tradition of vigorous innovation. They
are all black and white photographs that ignore the advent of
color.

JOHN PAUL II AND THE CITY OF ROME
JUBILEE BRIDGES
Author: Nicosia, Pizzo (edited by)
Author: Chiara Tonelli (edited by)
This is another opportunity for Rome to honour and express its
affection and gratitude towards John Paul II, a Pope who was so
important for the citizens of Rome and our entire community. His
was a long, incomparable papacy that for more than twenty-six
years was a journey of spiritual affinity, a combination of high points
and everyday life. The photographs, mementos, documents and
quotes from his writings and speeches published in this book
illustrate and define the Pope’s relationship with the city of Rome.
Every citizen, every tourist, every pilgrim, knows that the best
way to visit Rome is on foot. Rome is a city with a long and
formidable history that has left its traces at every corner, in
every piazza, along every street. A visit on foot means,
therefore, having the opportunity to read this history and
experience its beauty, in detail, as pilgrims have been doing for
hundreds of years while searching out, with the help of the
Mirabilia Urbis, the sites of History and of Faith.

KAKUSHIAJI
The hidden taste
Author: Simonetta Lux, Domenico Scudero (edited by)
Author: De Leonardis, Zanella (edited by)
If we can describe Cowan as one of the major exponents of
New British Sculpture since the 1980's, in the line whose
greatest exponents are Stephen Cox, Tony Cragg and Anish
Kapoor, Judith Cowan stands out for her esprit de finesse,
united with her spirit of contradiction.
The hidden taste, an intriguing literary definition that arouses
our curiosity. An invitation to depart on a fantastic voyage of
discovery in the universal world of “taste”, intended to include
the sensory dimension: tangible and intangible, substantial and
aesthetic, erotic and sublimated. Opposed in constant
becoming yet inclusive of the thing itself, its contrary that
included the thing and its opposite.

KITESURF PLANET
ROBERTO FORESTI’S PHOTOS
Author: Manfredi Nicoletti, Luca F. Nicoletti (edited by)
Author: Roberto Foresti
The project represents what the place lacks, its possible
completion. Going to Astana and flying over the Russian
steppe, its salt lakes, its flat and deserted land, its petrified
carcasses of crabbed trees, we noticed the lack of a flower that
opens in the heart of this city, and decided to fill this absence.
This photograph album will be available containing on its pages the
capability of all the magic and charm of this sport, the appreciation
of the style, the admiration of the manuvers during their
development and for the first time to maybe come close to this
extreme sport. Having followed Kitesurf from its beginning, as
official photographer of P.K.R.A. (Professional Kiteboard Riders
Association), allows Roberto Foresti to have on hand a vast photo
gallery which proves the development of this sport, its style, its
peculiarity and its unquestionable charm.

LIMA
The Historic Center. Analysis and Restoration
LOOKING FOR MORE LIGHT
Works 2008-2012
Author: Lombardi, Montuori, Palmerio (edited by)
Author: Gianfranco Caldarelli
The center of Lima is a heritage of great historical and artistic
value, currently in an advanced state of decay, threatened by
speculative pressures and not protected by appropriate laws
and regulations. This book, published with the support of World
Monuments Fund, presents the approach developed in a joint
research focused on identifying and evaluating the endangered
heritage preliminary to the rehabilitation process.
Gianfranco Caldarelli bears witness, through his artistic work,
to a cyclic path looking for the filigree that gives life to and
supports the tangible reality. Painting is a discovery. Also using
paintbrushes and colours can be a spring of magic and wonder!
That is testified by his loving reproduction of details, observed
with a very careful attention. But also the great size of many
among his paintings bears witness to this feverish thrill: telling
is not enough; it is necessary to affirm, to declaim.

MAASTRICHT 2010
Galleria Cesare Lampronti
Author: Francesca Argentero (edited by)
Author: Silvana Annicchiarico
It’s very difficult for an architect early in his career to produce
an image which is representative of his work; it’s even harder
for him, as the years go by, to maintain the course of his
research without falling into rigid ideological approaches. In the
work of the Norvegian studio JVA, one can find a real
coherence. Its roots are deep, and yet it is always capable being
innovative, responding to the challanges that each project offers
without ever falling into a “style”.
Cesare Lampronti represents the third generation of a family of
antique art dealers. Grown up in a stimulating cultural
background, Cesare Lampronti became one of the most
important art dealers and conoisseurs of 17th and 18th
centuries' fine art. Specialized in still life and landscape
paintings, he really plays a significant role in stimulating the
interests of art critics and scholars, both in past and present
times.

MANFREDI NICOLETTI ARCHITECT
Author: Dennis Sharp (edited by)
Author: Elena Giussani (edited by)
For the first time, the complete work of Manfredi Nicoletti and
his studio is published in a single volume. The book contains
sections on Nicoletti's drawings on architecture and nature and
completed projects including international competitions and
major internationally known works.
The most incisive features of Nicoletti's architecture arise from
his anti-academic philosophical approach. The motif of
technological innovation is tackled from an artistic point of view
because it is an instrument subject to architectural design, an
expression of the ecosystem concept of buildings that must be
pushed to behave like true, real self-sufficient organisms, even
from the point of view of energy.

MATTIA PRETI
A bridge between Italy and Malta
MAURIZIO DIANA
An illuminated figuration
Author: Marica Mercalli
Author: Gérard Xuriguera
The restoration of Mattia Preti’s work of art St George and the
dragon, kept in the Co-Cathedral of Valletta, represents a
significant success within the cooperation between the Italian
and Maltese Governments in the area of Cultural Heritage and
it is also a precious evidence of the skilfulness of the
technicians of the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro who saved it
from degradation.
Painters always research the harmonic balance in which shape
and intellect concord. Result of antagonist exchanges end
provoked casualties, of repentances and overturns, this
substains the paintings structure. This is the case of Maurizio
Diana, heir of a millenary culture, hit by social events early
enough, he did not turn to the advance of the stereotypes of his
inheritance or to the last turbulences of instability, instead, little
by little, he forged a problematic for his use in which the image
overlaps.

MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI
The Enchanted Mountains
MICHELE COSSYRO
Abysses
Author: Anna Imponente (edited by)
Author: Sergio Troisi (edited by)
The exhibition illustrates the artist's entire creative process: from
the original, miniature tempera drawings to the photographic
enlargements, the blow ups, in other words, the mechanical
transformation of the scraps of paper. The exhibition focused
on the multiple pictorial styles experimented by the artist;
instead in this year's exhibition in Rome, Antonioni had
presented his last works painted with the “colours of silence.”
160 works, a broad-ranging and almost complete selection from
the Enchanted Mountains in the Museo Antonioni.
Michele Cossyro earches inside things, in the nooks and
crannies of life where amazing worlds appear…worlds that take
your breath away... ... An abyss towards the infinitely small, the
microscopic, and an abyss towards what is big, towards infinity.
This is the intellectual thinking behind Cossyro’s new
works...[Marco Bussagli]

Glimpses of Italian street life
Author: Renato Miracco (edited by)
Author: Harvey Stein
With this exhibit by Mirko Basaldella (Mirko), New York
University’s Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimo continues to explore
contemporary Italian art by bringing to the American public one
of the most significant artists of this prolific era. From Lucio
Fontana to Carla Accardi to Achille Perilli to Carlo Guarient,
these artists reach the United States, and particularly New York,
a city especially attentive to artistic ferment from Italy.
Glimpses of Italian Street Life looks at the mosaic of daily life in
Italy – the intimate, short-lived moments that occur in public and
reveal the sensuous and the humorous, the ordinary and the
mysterious. The photographs reflect more than the passionate
personal vision of the photographer, author and teacher who
has visited and worked in Italy for the last 10 years.

PIETY AND PRAGMATISM
Spiritualism in Futurist Art
Author: Francesca Gottardo (edited by)
Author: Adams, Cremoncini, Duranti, Miracco (edited by)
This book shows how Portoghesi has taken up the gauntlet thrown
down by the problems afflicting man and the city, how he has
introjected the ethical legacy of modern architecture projecting it
towards a possible future where the lava flow of homologised,
consumer-oriented architecture can be stemmed and eliminated.
Portoghesi is convinced that the season of violent and
irresponsible vitalism is coming to an end, giving way to a new
season of what he calls Geo-architecture: an architecture that will
help us establish a “new alliance” with nature.
Futurism - which had initially recognised progress and the
machine as its only religions - increasingly felt an impulse to
transcend time and matter and to strive for a more spiritual
interpretation of modern life. This exhibition - which is the first of
its kind - in anticipation of Futurism's centenary in 2009. It
provides a comprehensive overview of this little-studied aspect
of Futurist art through works by many of the movement's major
exponents, including Giacomo Balla, Fillia and Gerardo Dottori.

POPES POSING
500 Years of Papal Portraiture
PROJECT ROMA THE CITY IN 2000
Author: Francesco Petrucci (edited by)
Author: Various Authors
it is one of the most important expositions of portrait painting
ever because of both the outstanding quality and the
considerable number of paintings and sculptures offered –
executed by Europe’s leading artists from the last five centuries
– and the great spiritual and social significance of the
personages portrayed: the greatest Pontiffs who from the 16th
century to the present have sat in the Chair of Saint Peter.
This volume gathers together all the works which have been
carried out or are now in progress and offers the reader an
impression of the changing face of Rome at the turn of the
century. The architectural projects include: the Auditorium by
Renzo Piano, the new satellite for Fiumicino Airport by
Tommaso Valle; the church for the year 2000 by Richard Meier.
And amongst the most important works of restoration: Galleria
Borghese, Palazzo Massimo, Palazzo Altemps, the Capitoline,
St. Peter's.

massive, detailed set of laws discriminating against the Jews.
In 1933, Telesio Interlandi, writing for Il Tevere and Roberto

ROMA TEARNE
RICHARD-GINORI 1737-1937
Ceramics from the Manifattura di Doccia
Museum
Author: Rosy Colombo, Domenico Scudero
Author: Various Authors (edited by)
Roma Tearne is a Sri Lankan-born artist living and working in
Britain. Trained as a painter her work has, for the last five years,
been almost exclusively about the traces of history in public and
private spaces. In 2002 she began work at the Ashmolean
Museum, Oxford, where she was the prestigious Leverhulme
Artist in Residence. She worked for a year amongst the
collection in close collaboration with Dr. Arthur Macgregor,
Senior Keeper of Antiquities, where she excavated the ‘secret'
and fragile histories of the objects.
The elegant porcelains of Richard Ginori are unquestionably
among the trademarks of excellence and superior quality that
distinguish products of Italian manufacture throughout the
world.

ROMAN MICROMOSAIC
ROME TOWARDS THE SEA
Author: Roberto Grieco
Author: Silvana Annicchiarico
This catalogue, written by the master mosaicist Roberto Grieco,
is a major contribution to our knowledge and understanding of
cut enamel minute mosaics of micromosaics in the eighteenth
and nineteenth centuries, five hundred of which are illustrated
in this book.
From the Capitol to the beaches of Ostia, a glance along the
line to the South West, that from the old town centre reaches
the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea: one multiform vision, a
metropolis that reaches the sea. Colours and shadows of a city
without time, because Rome is time, the change within eternity.
The work of Miro Gabriele and Enrico Fontolan tells apparitions
and surprises of a long journey, the infinite angles of light, that
touches everything like a feather: monuments, streets, houses,
suburbs, the reflections of sand, the waves of the sea.

ROME’S SUBURBIO
A cartographic History
ROSES IN CLOSE UP
Colour Music Poetry
Author: Gabriella Restaino
Author: Giuseppe Aulitto
The study of a portion of the surroundings of Rome – the
southeastern Suburbio in particular – has been an occasion for
an interesting and complex methodological operation of
cartographic interpretation of the place, in order to ‘re-construct'
the historical landscape, from the 16th century to the present,
of a particularly significant part of the region, as far as
characteristics, structure and permanencies.
Strolling through the Municipal Rose Gardens in Rome, the
camera lingers on the parts of a flower which have enhanced its
superior beauty and visual impact. The sequence of frames
records a dynamic image, forcing the photographer to use only
one image, or better still, one model, for his photographs – the
rose – portraying different shapes and colours. This selection
showcases poems and operas that sublimate the features of the
protagonist in order to elevate the latter to a higher, heavenly
dimension.

SEVENTEENTH CENTURY BLAZONRY
of the lesser roman aristocracy
SERGIO PETRUCCIOLI
Frames of architectures 1972-1992
Author: Gianni Venditti, Luca Becchetti (edited by)
Author: Sergio Petruccioli
The book presents forty-five, seventeenth-century coats of arms
of the aristocratic Roman families related to the Della Valle. The
coats of arms come from the Della Valle-Del Bufalo Archives
currently housed in the Vatican Secret Archives. The blazonry
is accompanied by historical notes and comments on the
documentation kept in the extensive family archives.
The suggestions and considerations which have informed my
experience as a designer over a period of twenty years, are so
numerous and ever-changing, often so intertwined with the
events of private life, to make very difficult to explain with clarity
comprehensive cultural disciplinary andhumans content. I
realized clearly reflecting on how to bring in the most
appropriate and effective the meaning of this book. [S.

SOLAR BUILDINGS
SPIRIT INTO SHAPE
Contemporary Italian Sculpture
Author: Giulia Falconi
Author: Renato Miracco (edited by)
Today throughout the architecture and town-planning world
systems based on renewable energies are being studied,
experimented with and created. This is not merely a response
to the energy crisis that has involved our whole planet, but it
also reflects a renewed sense of ethics, one that leads us to
want to act with economy, in harmony with the environment.
Sculpture is a very special form and has its own vital spirit. It is
open to reflection from the perspectives of scale, balance, line,
and texture. It is also an experiential form, referring a concept
and disclosing an expression of the spirit and its interaction with
the physical world, one in constant evolution. These changes
and new directions provide new stimuli for our contemporary
artists, who are conveying fresh creative concepts in forms that
embody bold new directions, original visions, and innovative
spaces in which we can take pleasure.

At a time when landscape is becoming one of the primary resources
with which to reinforce regional identity as expression of cultural,
natural and industrial heritage, it is important to explore ways of
transforming this new sensibility into a concrete opportunity for
regional development. This experience grew to contribute to the
thinking about an important theme in the contemporary landscape
both on the local, and European, levels – urban sprawl.

SUSTAINABLE CITY IS POSSIBLE
SUSTAINAB.ITALY
Contemporary Ecologies
Author: Ettore Maria Mazzola
Author: Alessandro d'Onofrio, Luca Molinari (edited by)
“The book is very direct and well documented, as for the
demonstration both of the scarce durability of contemporary
housing, and of the absolute negativity of the contribution
provided by it to our Country's economy and ecology. All of this
is cleverly supported by a very accurate historical summary,
compiled by Mazzola, of the negative consequences of the war
to the “traditionalism”, a phenomenon still present in a lot of
Italian Schools of Architecture”. [Paolo Marconi]
This design approach concentrates on improving the quality of
life and the landscape, optimising the use of resources, creating
a positive balance between economic growth, social equality,
respect for the environment and specific projects. Given the
tasks facing us in the future, this design approach has taken on
a whole new meaning.

TAIHE DIAN
The Hall of Supreme Harmony

English
TAKE THE SPACE
Author: Patrizia Ferri (edited by)
Author: Laura Moro (edited by)
This volume reports on the cognitive survey carried out in the
Hall of Supreme Harmony of the Forbidden City in Beijing by
the Directorate General for the Architectural and Landscape
Heritage. It aims at providing a thorough reading of geometries,
matters and building features of the Taihe dian, through a
“reverse path” to knowledge starting from the tangible document
of the building. A scientific report rooted in a long tradition of
cultural heritage management.
This book is an invitation to the artists and by the artists to the
public to use all their five senses to take over space: they are
asked to fill it, measure it, enhance it, violate it, transfigure it
and represent it as a way to create a relationship that will
irreversibly transform it from a neutral space to a chosen space,
for example this venue which for the first time hosts the
collection of the historic “Salerniana,” a collection of works by
young artists, most of whom are already famous while others
are still emerging.

TAROT CARDS
Meditation and Music
Author: Angelo Bucarelli (edited by)
Author: Bruno Battisti D'Amario
In compiling this note on Vietnamese photografy, taking note
that four authors are definitely not sufficient to represent the
large production the region undertakes today, the curators have
searched to privilege the regions of the authors. It seemed
important to choose who produce their art in their region of
origin. This selection of works by Nguyen Hai Dong, Hong Xuan
Lam, Duong Minh Long and Long Thanh gives glimpse at
Vietnamese photography, through a keyhole that stimulates
curiosity and interest by the audience.
This very interesting and fascinating project to couple the
symbolic value of tarot cards with closely associated sounds is
the brainchild of Maestro Bruno Battista D’Amario, a famous
concert guitarist and teacher at the Santa Cecilia State
Conservatory of Music in Rome. The 22 figures of the Major
Arcana of Tarot Cards are all interrelated, symbolising a moral
journey as well as several important key concepts.

heritage.
Born in 1969, Controspazio, whose approach to “architectural
autonomy” arose out of the climate of the “protests of '68”, is
today reviewing the contradictions in an architectural concept
focused on its own formal investigations which has generated
autonomous objects a float in a metropolitan sea of misery and

TOKO SHINODA
Line and Space
TOWARD SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE
Recreating our cities before they collapse
Author: Various Authors
Author: Ettore Maria Mazzola
Toko Shinoda is rightly considered one of the major Japanese
artists of our time. Her works are original and unmistakable, and
have set a standard both in Japan and throughout the world.
Her art in our country has stimulated the interest of a number
of connoisseurs, who enthusiastically received the Italy-Japan
Foundation’s invitation to make the work of this extraordinary
Japanese painter known to a wider public.
Apparently, in his world that has chosen to lose an
awareness of time, racing far ahead of its capacity, where
architects seem only to be interested in gratifications of the
moment, with no interest in past commitments and future
obligations...who will pay for their transitory decision? Parting
from these premises, the author wants to try making a series
of observations aimed at bringing about a reversal in the trend

TRANSFORMATIONS OF LANDSCAPE IN
RURAL TERRITORY
Author: Romano, Caruso, Borelli, De Leonardis (edited by)
Author: Patrizia Tassinari (edited by)
The colour is a scream, poetic and disorganised like a jazz
piece. The first step to enter the artistic work of Fabrizio Borelli
is the colour,as a confirmation to his interior universe.
Something in this chromatic dynamism — matching to the
gestures of the sign, to certain iconography — retaken from
compulsive spontaneity from the Street Art, mindful of the road
of the avant-gardes to the language of cartoons and
videogames.
The study presented in this book arose from the above-outlined
framework, and was carried out by authors belonging to the
University of Bologna, the University of Molise and the University
of Marches. The research groups agreed on a research
architecturte aimed at investigating different and complementary
issues of landscape change, and at verifying and comparing
various methodologies and approaches through their test in
different contexts.

UTOPIAS AND MODERNITY
UTOPIAS FOR THE EIGHTIES
Arthur O. Lewis, Giuseppa Saccaro Del Buffa
Author: Giuseppa Saccaro Del Buffa, Arthur O. Lewis
Like all conceptual categories in the history of ideas, utopia
also undergoes metamorphosis because it is a crucial part of
the continuous self-clarification movement with which society
interprets its own changeable characteristics, determines its
new direction, and modifies its goals and means. As a result,
the concept of utopia as a model - once so important and now
the constant temptation of constructive rationality - should be
considered as too narrow and restrictive for our complex
modern world.
The book contains papers by sixty-four authors, all with a
different cultural background, different methods, and
different beliefs. The papers reveal a complex vision of
utopia considered in the forms in which it has been
imagined, planned, and to some extent implemented. The
authors also focus on the explicit or at times hidden ways
in which utopia has coloured the aspirations of individual or
collective, superficial or radical change.

VIDEOZOOM SPANISH VIEOARTISTS
VIDEOZOOM SAN MARINO
Author: David Barro (edited by)
Author: Emanuela Termine (edited by)
VIDEOZOOM is an important initiative and work ‘in
progress’. Its scope is to trace the history of video and other
artists, especially the work of younger generations.
“Videozoom, Spanish video artists” is the fifth edition of the
video exhibition previously held in Israel, Poland, Iran and
China.
The artists in this project are especially using video as a
document of action for a timeframe that is mental and
corporal, in the conviction that is now necessary to react o
weighty epistemological dualism.

VITTORIO SELLA’S GEORGIAN

WHAT IS FREEMASONRY?
Author: Various Authors
Author: Paolo Gambi (edited by)
Vittorio Sella in addition to devote himself to climbing with
photography documented the high mountains, with annual
campaigns that took him from 1880 to 1893 across the whole
of the Alps with his famous machine for plate size 30 x 40 in
order to obtain the best possible results at the time. Vittorio
Sella was able to coexist in his images the appearance with that
of the geographical documentation and, even more rarely,
mountaineering.
A review of the philosophy of the “Grand Master of Spring”. A
journey through esoterism, the pedagogy of dialogue, the Great
Architect of the Universe, laicism, the eternal conflict between
science and faith, the sacrosanct right to the pursuit of

WATER ARCHITECTURE IN FRIULI
VENEZIA GIULIA
WORKSHOP MISSONI
Daring to be Different
Author: Anna Frangipane
Author: Paola Noè (edited by)
Water-related architectural works, some visible, others hidden,
define a network of relationships traced into the collective
memories of communities, forming the roots of a shared sense of
place. Making reference to elements that still exist and to others
re-evoked through documents and images, the author leads us
on an exploration of the symbolic and functional relationships
between architecture and water in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
It was always important for the Estorick Collection not only to
show the beautiful clothes and designs produced by Missoni
over their fifty-year career, but also to make our public aware
of the close connection between art and the Missonis' idea of
fashion.

WOUNDED WATER
YOUNG ARCHITECTS IN ROME
Author: Mary Angela Schroth (edited by)
Author: Naseddu, Dell'Aira, Rebecchini (edited by)
Six Iraqi artists interpret the theme of water.
This publication, supported also by Major Patron Hussain Ali Al
Hariri, is thus a homage to all participants in the Pavilion of Iraq,
a pilot project that is the basis for the creation of a permanent
platform for Iraqi contemporary art.
The book illustrates a university project designed to foster
knowledge, within the lecture halls, the professional realities of
the assets and of the research project, which undertake, in our
country, a generation of architects who undertake today the
new training.

DWELLING ON EARTH
A magazine of geoarchitecture
edited by Paolo Portoghesi
DRAWING
Ideas images
Author: Paolo Portoghesi (edited by)
Author: Piero Albisinni (edited by)
Portoghesi is convinced that the season of violent and
irresponsible vitalism is coming to an end, giving way to a new
season of what he calls Geo-architecture: an architecture of
responsibility that will help us establish a “new alliance” with
nature.
The fact that drawing was on the syllabus of young architects
for three years and they could add specific modules in design
workshops injected new life and above all new enthusiasm into
young architects who rediscovered drawing thanks to the use
of highly advanced technological tools.

1866. UNE MISSION SECRÈTE PAR
LODOVICO FRAPOLLI À BERLIN
ARTS D’AFRIQUE
Author: Luigi Polo Friz
Author: Chantal Dandrieu

COLLECTIONS D’ART ET

L’ITALIE DU RISORGIMENTO
BURUNDI CONGO RWANDA
Author: Carlo Carbone
Author: Michela Scolaro, Sandra Costa, Paola Callegari, Marco Pizzo
(edited by)

Author: Various Authors
Author: Alessandra Mastronardi

Author:Yves Bergeret, Alessandra Cardelli Antinori (edited by)
moyens.

NATANGUÉ SÉNÉGAL
PAYSAGE DE LA PROXIMITÈ (LE)
Author: Elena Malagodi,Yasmina Barbet (edited by)
Author: Maria Gabriella Trovato
Children at school, mothers helped and protected – this is the
aim of our work in Senegal. [Elena Malagodi, president di FAI
in Senegal e Natangué Sénégal].

PIERO (DELLA FRANCESCA)
THÉORICIEN DE L'ART
PROJET ROME - LA VILLE DE L’AN 2000
Author: Omar Calabrese (edited by)
Author: Ministero Affari Esteri
Jubilée de l'an 2000.
Valle, l'Eglise pour l'an 2000 de Richard Meier.

T’ANG HAYWEN. LE DERNIER VOYAGE
Author: Lionella Scazzosi, Anna Di Bene (edited by)
figure de la tradition calligraphique contemporaine.

Ersten Weltkriegs
MARIO FERRANTE
Author: Giuseppe Talamo, Marco Pizzo (edited by)

SOLAR BUILDINGS
ITALIENISCHES DESIGN
Author: Giulia Falconi
Author: Silvana Annicchiarico (edited by)

Suche vereint. Weite Farbfelder schaffen einen
undeutlichen, mystischen Raum, der weder bildnerisch noch
konstruktiv-geometrisch sein will und als Widerhall des
Inneren den Faden der lyrischen Abstraktion aufgreift.

ARQUITECTURAS 1880- 2004
ARQUEOLOGÍA INDUSTRIAL
Author: Daniela Pastore (edited by)
Author: Carlo Aymerich

CARACAS
Author: Emanuela De Menna, Gastone Ave
Author: Elisenda Vila , Giuseppe Imbesi

FRANCO ABBINA. OBRAS
GARIBALDI. DEMOCRACIA Y
DERECHOS
Author: Franco Abbina
Author: Lauro Rossi (edited by)
originalidad y extraño a cualquier movimiento artistico
conocido.
A nivel

HOUSING CONFERENCE
KITESURF PLANET
Author: Milena Farina (edited by)
Author: Roberto Foresti
presentadas muenstran enfoques comunes y significados

Author: Patrizia Montuori, Angela Lombardi, Giancarlo Palmerio
Author: Alessandro Ferretti

INSTRUMENTOS
PROYECTO ARQUEOLÓGICO / DISEÑO
ARQUITECTÓNICO
Author: Alessandro Ferretti (edited by)

Author: Rita Giuliani
Author: Rusudan Lordkipanidze

KAZAKHSTAN CENTRAL CONCERT
HALL
Author: Stefano Dorata
Author: Luca F. Nicoletti, Manfredi Nicoletti (edited by)

DESENHOS DE CARLO SCARPA PARA A

MARIO FERRANTE
NEGRO NO CORAÇÃO
Author: Carlo Scarpa
Author: Various Authors
Veneza. Arquitetura e Projetos [1948-1968]” apresenta as
