Principal’s Message
From The Principal
It is hard to believe that we are already in the second semester . The month
of February is dedicated toward selecting courses for next year. This process
is very lengthy and involves critical components from many different parties.
Please discuss the importance of this process with your children. The actual
electronic selection of the courses is a fairly straightforward process; it is the
thought and planning before that which is extremely important. When your
children select classes, please make sure that they discuss their selections
with the appropriate teacher. The professional evaluation by a teacher for the
appropriate placement in future classes is very important. If your children are
uncertain about future courses, please have them discuss the options with
their advisory teacher, counselor, or grade level principal for recommendations related to course choices for 2013-2013. It is important that selections
be as accurate and firm as possible.
There is a great deal of information regarding the course selection process on
the Counseling Department portion of our website. To access it, go to http://
www.haverford.k12.pa.us for the “District Home page. Under “select a
School” at the top choose “Haverford High School”. Near the top under
“Programs and Services”, select “Counseling Department” and then “Course
Selection Process 2013-2014”.
There are two other very positive events which you can read more about in
the newsletter. One is the naming of all 6 National Merit Semifinalists as Finalists. This is an outstanding accomplishment by all of them. In addition,
the high school recently received a $10,000 donation from the Kal and Lucille
Rudman foundation to help update and improve WHHS, our high school radio
station.
Thank you for your continued support. Feel free to contact me at 610-8535900 ext. 2527 or [email protected] if you have questions or concerns with
which I may be able to assist.

SINGING VALENTINES AT HAVERFORD
The twenty-fourth annual Singing Valentines were delivered during blocks
1, 2 and 4 on February 14, much to the delight of the high school faculty,
staff, and students. This long-standing tradition, begun in 1989 by junior
Matt Zemon, has continued to grow in popularity.
The sixty-two singers are students of choral music teacher Marsha
Core but the administrators of the event are the eight 2012-13 Choral
Council officers: Tristan Horan, Liz Kurdyla, Wendy Chao, Kim Carden,
Chris Donnay, Emily Yacina, Kim Hosan, and Alexis Livanos. These students were elected by singers in both choirs and organize many of the
year’s activities. Ms. Core is always quick to state, “The students run the
telegram business by themselves with no help from me. They also make
their own arrangements and it’s very challenging for them, despite the fun
aspect of it.”
Adding an additional educational component to the Singing Valentines
this year, members of two digital photography classes sponsored by art
teacher, Samara Talkin, shadowed the singing groups. Talkin stressed
that the student photographers were coached in appropriate demeanor as
well as in proper camera technique and they became the positive spirited
paparazzi for the singers.

Delaware County Hi-Q is the oldest, continuous academic quiz competition in the United States. Schools from across Delaware County choose
teams of motivated, intelligent students to compete in three regular season contests. Based on the cumulative scores of those contests, teams
are ranked and the top seven move onto the semifinal contests. The season culminates with the championship competition set to take palce on
March 12 ,2013. The Haverford Hi-Q finished in third place at the end of
the regular season and has advanced to the semifinals where it will host a
contest against Strath Haven and Delco Christian. The team members
have devoted countless hours to study and preparation for each contest.
Hi-Q team members study topics as diverse as sports, and chemistry,
American government, and Shakespeare. The success of the Haverford
Hi-Q team is a testament to the dedication to education of each of their
teachers as well as their own ambition, talent, and intelligence.

Haverford High’s WHHS (99.9 FM) to Receive
Timely Donation from Kal & Lucille Rudman and Rename
Radio Studio in Their Honor
Donation Will Provide Equipment in Crucial FCC License Renewal Process
For One of Nation’s First and Longest Running High School Radio Stations
The Kal and Lucille Rudman Foundation presented a timely donation for new equipment to the
Haverford High School student radio station, WHHS (99.9 FM) on Wednesday, February 20, at 1:00
p.m. at the WHHS Studio at Haverford High School. Students then named the WHHS Studio, The
Kal and Lucille Rudman Studio. Radio and music industry legend Kal Rudman and his wife Lucille
toured the studio and talked with students about their radio training experience.
Thanks to the donation, new equipment will be purchased which will strengthen WHHS’ bid to meet
the requirements to renew its FCC license. One of the oldest running high school FM stations in the
United States, WHHS has persevered when the number of high school radio stations has dropped
to only 200 in the nation.
“I consider a communications teaching program to be the same as any other vocational program,”
said Mr. Rudman. “The ability to start at the high school level, including engineering, programming,
and administration has enabled students at Haverford, since the late 1940s, to have a big edge in
obtaining professional careers both locally and around the United States.”
School District of Haverford Township Superintendent Dr. William Keilbaugh commented,
“Haverford High School has a rich tradition of student radio. For 64 years, WHHS has provided students the opportunity to gain skills in communication, teamwork, and the ability to navigate and
manage technology and content. Mr. Rudman's generous donation comes at a perfect time as we
start our FCC renewal process and contend with increasing budget constrictions. The students, administration, and alumni are grateful to Mr. Rudman for his generosity, and we look forward to many
more years of Fords on the air.”
WHHS was started in 1949 as an experiment in radio electronics at Haverford High School. The
Principal, Mr. Granger, secured a frequency from the FCC. With the help of a physics and chemistry teacher, WHHS was on the air.
Haverford High School students now produce and DJ live music, news, sports and current events
shows. To go on the air, students are required to learn the federal regulations that govern the station, use of equipment, and how to organize air time. WHHS alumni now work for radio stations like
WMGK, WYSP, WXPN, and others around the country.
A Philadelphia native, Kal Rudman, started as a DJ and high school teacher before launching his
radio and music industry publications. The founder of six industry-leading publications, including
The Friday Morning Quarterback, he and his wife Lucille have continued to give back to the industry
through supporting radio education opportunities for students throughout the region.

Teacher is 2013 Haverford High Wing Bowl champion, with 39 wings
By Kevin Tustin
Daily Times Staff Writer
Haverford High School teacher Leon “L-Train” Smith rode into victory station Friday afternoon to become the school’s 2013 Wing Bowl Champion.
Smith ate a total of 39 wings at the school’s 7th Annual Wing Bowl, reclaiming the title that he had previously won in 2007 and 2009.
The history teacher ate just one more wing than the defending champion,
student Gavin Vanstone, in the final round for the win.
“It was a good feeling but I was also worried,” Smith said about getting to
the final round once more. “In the finals I know that you have to eat more
and I was already stuffed.”
Smith ate 11 wings in the three-minute final round, beating Vanstone’s 10,
and teacher Meghan MacConnell’s, the 2011 champion, six.
“I was worried because I was going up against two great competitors,”
Smith said. “I was watching out for (MacConnell), I was always concerned
where she was.”
Smith and MacConnell tied in the teacher’s round, eating 28 wings in 10
minutes. The unprecedented tie allowed both teachers to go to the final
round.
In the student round, Vanstone ate 30 wings in the same timeframe, edging out Eddie Gillespie by one to get to the finals. Even though he ate one
more wing than Smith overall, losing the final round ultimately cost him.
Smith was awarded a trophy and a $100 cash prize for the victory, which
he donated to the program Best Buddies at Haverford High School.
Page 13
The school’s annual Wing Bowl serves as the primary fundraiser for the
program, which allows non-disabled students to form one-to-one friendships with students with developmental and intellectual disabilities. The
program currently has 150 members.
The biggest Wing Bowl to date, the event brought in over $1,000 to the
program. The funds were collected by prospective wing eaters who had to
raise money for the program in order to compete. The 10 students and
teachers who raised the most money for the program earned a spot to
compete in the bowl.
Tickets sold for the Wing Bowl also contributed to the grand total.
With three wins under his belt and a full belly, Smith said he may compete
again next year.
“We’ll see. I think so, if it works out.”

A Message from Haverford’s HEART TEAM
(Student Assistance Program)
Underage drinking is a serious issue among teens. Within the past month in the United States, an estimated 10 million young people under the age of 21 drank alcohol.
Teen drinking has been a factor in countless cases of alcohol poisoning, automobile
accidents, assaults, rapes, and deaths. Statistics show that children whose parents
regularly talk with their children about alcohol use are less likely to drink. SAMHSA
(Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) has a new campaign
called “Talk. They Hear You.” You can access a variety of information on their website, all designed to help you talk with your children about this vitally important subject. They even have scripts for text messages that you can send to your child!
Check out their website for some great ideas.
