The coast along the Oslo fjord, the countryside and vast forest areas all offer exciting outdoors’ experiences. And – all of this is located in close proximity to the nation’s capital. Some of this the riders and spectators will get to experience during the first stage of the race. Tour of Norway - welcome to the bicycle county of Akershus! Anette Solli County mayor It is with great pleasure that I welcome all participants and partners in the Tour of Norway competition to the county of Akershus. Akershus is a county of big contrasts, and it is currently experiencing substantial growth. Although it is one of Norway’s smallest counties in terms of geographical extension, it is one of the biggest in terms of population. It comprises some of the leading technological resource centres, research institutions, consulting firms and companies in the country, as well as Norway’s main airport Gardermoen. At the same time Akershus is the biggest producer of grain in Norway, with rich natural resources and endless possibilities for ØSTFOLD Welcome to Østfold! Even though Østfold is the second smallest county in Norway, we like to call our region “compact and complete”. Everything is reached within an hour or so by car. Østfold is a region with a diverse nature – rivers, quiet lakes and forests in the inland, and a beautiful coastline that attracts a great number of tourists every summer. Østfold is the gateway to Norway – and is actually your first meeting with the Norwegian fjords, as you cross the border from Sweden over Svinesund. We like to call Østfold both “the gateway to Norway” and “The gateway to Europe”. Because of our central location between the capitol Oslo and the Swedish border, we are also close to Europe and EU. You will se a lot of Østfold while you’re here. Most people prefer to see our county by car, which can be practical, due to the distances. But as mentioned earlier, Østfold is a compact county. By seeing from your bikes, you will see a lot more. You will travel from the sea into the woods, and back. You will hear seabirds and city noise, and then, maybe just an hour later, experience the calmness of inner Østfold. Beware of the moose! Once again – welcome! We hope to see you again! Ole Haabeth County mayor 4 BUSKERUD Welcome to Buskerud! climbing, hiking, fishing and not to forget; cycling. Our ski resorts offer exciting tracks for downhill cycling, and if you want to go inside the mountain there are opportunities for joining mine safaris in old cobalt and silver mines. It`s a great pleasure for me to welcome cyclists, collaboration partners and guests to our county. This race has become a joyful recurrence in Buskerud, but the 2015 edition of Tour of Norway is very special to us because this year`s race will utilize larger parts of our county. The race´s journey will take us through valleys and villages encircled by spectacular mountains in the north-west, as well as urban areas by the coastline of the Oslo Fjord in the southeast. Both racers and guests will really experience what Buskerud has to offer, and I truly appreciate that. We are proud that Buskerud has opportunities for everyone, and it is therefore a great honour for me as Chairman of the County Council of Buskerud to see our county as an arena for this race. Good luck to all of you! A steadily increasing number of people discover the great opportutunities of Buskerud both as a region to visit as well as to live the Good Life. The urban areas in the south experience the fastest growth in the country. In the north of the county we find Norway´s biggest tourist region with major ski destinations visited by a lot of international guests during the season. We are also pround of our innovative businesses and clusters in various sectors; hi-tech, subsea, bio-economy and health. Buskerud attracts both talents and investments to a thriving business life. Morten Eriksrød County mayor From the Oslo Fjord to the mountain plateau of Hardangervidda, Buskerud comprises the best of Norwegian scenery. During the summer season there are great possibilities for water sports, TELEMARK Welcome to Telemark! seat or on board one of the nostalgic canal boats. Get your adrenalin kick at the Mountain-bike Park in Vrådal, or cycle on the Hardangervidda, North Europe largest mountain plateau- you can also take Krossobannen to the top. One destination. Thousand opportunities. «Norway in miniature» is a well-known and often used description of Telemark. Why? Telemark has it all! Here you can enjoy Norway’s amazing and diverse nature - from the beautiful coastline to the majestic mountains – within short distances. However, there is nothing miniature like when it comes to your Telemark experiences – on the contrary. Besides the great nature and the fun activities, Telemark is also known for its history. Get an insight in Henrik Ibsen´s world at his childhood home at Venstøp in Skien or learn more about the fascinating industrial History at Notodden and Rjukan that brought Telemark on Unesco’s tentative world heritage list. Explore the maritime museum and science centre, Du Verden- the children will be fascinated. For a customized Telemark-holiday get in touch with Visit Telemark. Telemark is the ideal place for combining wonderful nature with fun activities for both adults and children. Start your adventure with a RIB- trip on the Kragerø-archipelago, or just enjoy a relaxing canoe trip on Møsvatn-lake. Don’t forget your swimming suite, you might want to jump into the sea or swim in the amazing natural waterpark in Nissedal. If you are a hike-enthusiast, we recommend Southern Norway´s largest mountain Gaustatoppen, or a cruise on the Telemark Canal-here are also good fishing opportunities. Terje Riis-Johansen County mayor Take a break in the heart of Telemark and spoil yourself with some local made bakeries, local apple juice or maybe local winetasting. Further visit also Bø Sommarland or the new Høyt & Lavt Climbing Park is not so far away - the children will totally love it. The well-preserved ruins of the old church are what remains of the church built in the 1100’s. Centrally located, near Oslo and the country’s main airport, is one of the largest agricultural municipalities in Norway, Nes. The countryside here has been cultivated for generations and the area is often referred to as ”The Nordic Tuscany”. This is where Norway’s two largest rivers, the Glomma and the Vorma, meet, giving rich opportunities for fishing, bathing and recreation. Further south along the river Glomma is the old farm Store Hvam. This was one of the richest farms in the larger area of Romerike and its history can be traced back for many generations. People have farmed here for 1500 years. North along the Vorma we find the lock at Svanefoss, enabling boats to travel from the rivers up to the great lake, Mjøsa. The central town of the area, Årnes, was established with the building of the railway line to Stockholm in the 1860’s. About 4,000 people now live in Årnes and the area has a total population of 21,000. Both the town and the municipality are growing rapidly and a large increase in the population is expected in the years to come. Stein school, or The Fairytale School, as it is called, is beautifully and playfully decorated by some of Norway’s foremost artists in the 1930’s. The school was greatly influenced by Henrik Wergeland, a leading pioneer in the development of Norwegian literature and culture. In the school we find the artist Reidar Aulie’s painting of Henrik Wergeland on his horse. A large number of people commute to Oslo, Lillestrøm and Jessheim, as well as the national airport at Gardemoen for work. Agriculture is the largest industry in the area and there is a growing focus on green industry with the construction of one of Europe’s largest plants for the production of biogas from household waste. In adition to boating on the rivers, the great forests which stretch toward the Swedish border provide almost unlimited possibilities for camping and canoing with their numerous lakes both large and small. The Halden watercourse and channel systems along the Swedish border start in this area. Nes also has two 18 hole golf courses, one at Hvam and the other at Vormsund. There are many sports and cultural activities in Nes. Possibilities are many, the activity level is high and we have many talented people. For instance we can mention that 3 of the 4 on this year’s winning relay team in the junior World Skiing Chapionships came from Nes. Welcome to Nes! On the headland where the two large rivers meet stand the ruins of Nes church. This headland has given the area its name Nes, 16 STAGE 1: ÅRNES > SARPSBORG Sarpsborg Sarpsborg has 54 000 inhabitants and is the tenth largest Norwegian city. It´s centrally located in the heart of Østfold, with good communication links to Europe and the rest of Norway. Sarpsborg is rich on culture, sports and history. We look forward to welcoming Tour of Norway to our city of optimism, vitality, growth and change. We have growing businesses, great living facilities and beautiful scenic surroundings both by the coast and in the inland. We also have the largest waterfall in North of Europe, measured in water flow. Welcome to Sarpsborg! Sarpsborg is founded by St. Olav and thus the country´s third oldest. Here you will find an exciting combination of both urban and green experiences. Do it all on the same day − or even on the same afternoon. You will be astonished at everything that we have to offer. We welcome Tour of Norway 2015 to the river city of Drammen. Drammen offers an excellent salmon river with pleasure cruising, nice beaches and idyllic sea fronts. A many- sided cultural life with the most beautiful theatre building in Norway. A prizewinning main square with lively street life. Walking trails in almost unspoiled nature and a great panoramic view from the Spiral Top. Try combining a city trip in dynamic Drammen with a wilderness expedition, or a round of golf in a picturesque cultural landscape. Or you can take a chance on a ravine expedition or high ski jumps on the slopes. Drammen is located 40 kilometers west of Oslo. Drammen has more than 64,000 inhabitants, but the city serves as a regional centre for an area with a population of about 150,000. Lakes, rivers and a long coastline with 286 kilometres of river- and waterfronts await you, with swimming, sailing, fishing and other exciting water activities. The city of Drammen was founded in 1811 as the two towns of Strømsø and Bragernes were united. The city shield was originally created in 1715. It says ”In fide et justitia fortitudo” (From faith and justice comes strength). The central location of the Drammen region and its accessibility make it easy for you to come visit. The total area of Drammen is 145.2 square kilometres, including 9.5 square kilometres of lakes and rivers, 15.8 square kilometres of farming land and 89.9 square kilometres of forest. Drammen is a city of diversity and 20 percent of the population have immigrant background, a fact which leaves its colorful mark on the cityscape. 24 STAGE 2: DRAMMEN > LANGESUND Langesund Langesund offers a perfect blend of active days, hiking along the coastal path, island hopping, bike rides, and lazy days on one of the many beaches. Cyclists flock to the city for an ice cream break on the pier as a natural highlight. At Bamble municipality, with no less than three bicycle clubs, we are looking forward to a fast-paced finish in the sprint leg of the Tour of Norway on Thursday May 21. Welcome to Langesund, a coastal gem at the edge of the Telemark coast. With the most sunny days a year, Langesund is an established tourist resort, bustling with life and a number of festivals throughout the summer, such as Fishing Festival, Garden Festival, Shanty Festival and the International Youth Film Festival, to name a few. The well-known outdoor stage Wrightegaarden is a rallying point, frequently visited by major international and Norwegian stars. Langesund is popular with boaters and our guest piers are frequently visited. 25 26 200 m 150 m 100 m 50 m 0m altitude O KM am 0 k Dr mm el Sv 20 KM 15 k vi km 40 KM 3 an H m 44 km va ei ,5 (3 l ek 0 21 km ,7 /5 ) % 60 KM 80 KM e Fe 78 8 bu m de 6 k An km g n di 100 KM 120 KM ve Li 140 KM d ta s e m km m 129 o B k km vi 133 ern km r 1 La av 14 St 12 TV 3 km .) st H 160 KM oa er 4 k m g el 15 m (1 ,6 /7 ) % 180 KM en ng km a n g 174 La 1 26 km 193 KM d ik 4 k m n ev 18 esu km r B n g 193 La Stage profile en Sa e km nd 8 (e STAGE 2: DRAMMEN > LANGESUND STAGE 2: DRAMMEN > LANGESUND Start area Ne dre Str a Løkkebergve ien e lle Eng gat ene sA e ens en gat Bergstien pel ørr es es Cap kB ug Eri Ha PPO Address: Engene 1, Drammen. Home of just over 53,000, Skien offers city life with concerts and pleasant cafés, and the Mersmak food festival, but also salmon fishing right in the town centre, and great nature and outdoor experiences. The Telemark Channel starts here, to be enjoyed as a passenger on one of the channel boats, and you can freely jump on and off along the way, so as to include your own cycling holiday if you so please. Channel Week from May 18 to 25 opens this year’s season, inviting you to a long list of various events on and by the channel. Skien is Henrik Ibsen’s native town and a visit to his childhood home at Venstøp is recommended. In the summer ”Ibsen and Food” offers samples from the playwright’s works along with culinary treats. Riders in the Tour of Norway starting from here get to taste honey cake, Ibsen’s favourite. Skien has proud cycle traditions and racers Thor Hushovd, Dag Erik Pedersen, and the sisters Monica and Anita Valen all kicked off their careers here. Welcome to Skien! 32 STAGE 3: SKIEN > RJUKAN Rjukan Rjukan is situated in Tinn municipality, about 2.5 hours from Oslo. Sam Eyde is the founder of Rjukan. He bought the Rjukan waterfall in 1902 and built the Norwegian Hydro. Artificial fertilizer were produced and saved the world from famine. Rjukan grew from being a small farming community to a vibrant industrial community with more than 10,000 inhabitants. This unique industrial history has led to UNESCO nomination. with the industrial history, as well as the world famous war history ”the drama of the heavy water”. Krossobanen is a cable car that within 5 minutes whisks you up to the foot of Hardangervidda - Norway’s largest National Park. The sun is behind the high mountains all winter, thus a large mirror ensures that sunlight is reflected and sent down to the Rjukan square. Few other places have so much to offer within so few square meters. Today Rjukan has about 3,000 inhabitants and most of the industry is shut down. However, tourism is a blooming industry. Gaustatoppen towers majestically over the town. Inside the 1883 meter high mountain there is a lift called Gaustabanen which enables you to reach Gaustatoppen within 15 minutes. Geilo’s first hotel, Gjeilo Hotell (now Geilo Hotel), was established in 1880. In 1909 – the same year as the opening of the Bergen Railway – came Dr. Holms Hotel. Skarverennet was first organized in 1974. It is a cross-country skiing race, arranged by the club Geilo IL. The race begins in Finse, and runs along Hallingskarvet, before it finishes at Ustaoset, a total of 37 km. More than 12 000 people participate every year. Geilo is the biggest town in the municipality of Hol, with approximately 2500 inhabitants. It is located halfway between Norway’s two main cities, Oslo and Bergen. Geilo is situated at 798 meters above sea level, near two national parks; Hardangervidda and Hallingskarvet. Here you will find plateaus, waterfalls, rivers, and a rich wildlife. There are several mountain roads and wellmarked and well-trodden paths if you want to walk or cycle. In Hardangervidda National Park you can experience Europe’s largest reindeer herd, and perhaps be lucky enough to see both snowy owls and arctic foxes. In 2008 Geilo, as one of five in Norway, was designated the title “National Park Village”. In addition, Geilo is working hard to be sertified as a “Sustainable destination” in 2016. Hol has fostered several great athletes such as the freestyle skiers Andreas Håtveit and Tiril Sjaastad Christiansen, the ice skaters Hege and Håvard Bøkko and Christoffer Fagerli Rukke. In addition, the upcoming singer/songwriter star, Daniel Kvammen, is from Geilo. It is over 100 years since Geilo welcomed its first ski tourists. As early as 1867, the first English tourist, Lord Garvagh from London, came to the area around Hallingskarvet. In 1880, his son had the well-known Lordehytta built at Folarskaret on Hallingskarvet. Modern ski tourism began in 1935 when one of the country’s first slalom races was organized in Geilo. That was the beginning of today’s modern, all-round sports resort. Some of the greatest events that have marked the development of Geilo have been the opening of the Bergen Railway in 1909, the establishment of an Geilo has developed into a popular destination – winter, spring, summer and autumn. You will find a selection of restaurants, shops and activities and a wealth of accommodation options. From Geilo it is also only a short distance to the fjords of Western Norway, and the journey by train from Geilo station is an experience in itself. 41 42 altitude 1200 m 1000 m 800 m 600 m 400 m 200 m 0m O KM Rj an m uk 0 k 20 KM rå At 20 de A yg tb 7 km s u 2 km 40 KM Im km 60 KM ll 53 11 fje g km in 54 m 4 (2 ,3 /4 % ) 80 KM l m da 80 k v U L e iv 83 R 0 m Rå 100 KM 97 km km ,7 (4 ia l en 78 rg be 1 km d ø 9 TV km .) st (e 5 , /8 ) % 120 KM vd m ho 22 k n 1 Tu 140 KM n le da 9 km r u 14 Sk 160 KM 0 m km (2 ,3 168 KM ,9 ) % da en r g ls km /7 / ilo da km Ge avs 168 H 96 ilo 163 Ge Stage profile ng di 2 km e 8 Fe STAGE 4: RJUKAN > GEILO 37 STAGE 4: RJUKAN > GEILO Start area 43 Mæland sgata 37 Sam Eydes gate Skriugata Storgata RJUKAN Ingulfsland Svaddevegen 37 Sam Eydes gate Øverland PPO Address: Sam Eydes gate 67, Rjukan. This is by far Norways largest travelling region with almost 6 mill guests each year. The last few years a lot of the industry in Flå has shifted towards travel and leisure. Olav Thon has invested more than 500 MNOK to help develop Flå from a place primarily based mainly on agriculture and forestry to also include retail and tourism. Lately Flå has also started competing with the rest of the Hallingdal region when it comes to recreation and tourism. The last ten years hundreds of cabins have been built and there are more to come. At Høgevarde around 1000 cabins are planned and will be offered in the years to come. This is pristine area where you can hike at 1000moh + With only a 90 min drive from the capital Oslo, Flå has a serious advantage to rest of the region. Flå is the warmest place in Norway during the summer. Should it be too warm you can seek up in the mountains for a cooler breeze or you can go swimming in the river or go to the lake Krøderen only 10 minutes away from Flå sentrum. Flå is working hard to focus on nature-based tourism. During summer you can attend different kind of trips with the best guides possible. The Norwegian hunting and Fishing association has placed its national course-center here where you learn from th best on how to improve your skills in shooting, fishing, and general hunting. The Bearpark alone attracts around 70.000 guests each year and is the largest attraction in the summer for the whole region. One of the reasons why it is placed here is that the last of wild brown bears in Norway resided here. With weights up to 400kg this is by far the largest predator in Scandinavia. In the park you can experience this beautiful and intelligent animal in its natural environment. In addition to the brown bear you can also see other animals that resides naturally in the woods of Norway, like lynx, moose and red deer. You also get to attend feeding sessions and there are loads of other animals that you can pet and get to know better. The park emphasis interaction between visitors and animals like few other, but of course on premises best for the animals. www.visit flaa.no Funfacts: • The bear looses up to 40% of its weight during hibernation. • The bear can eat up to 184000 blueberries in one single day. • The male can kill cubs in order to breed with the female bear in order to ensure continuation of its own genes • The Lynx can jump 2m straight up and 5m forwards from a still stand, thus making it capable of completely taking its prey by surprice. 48 STAGE 5: FLÅ > EGGEMOEN The Ringerike Region Hadeland Glassverk is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Norway. The glassworks was founded in 1762 in Jevnaker, and is the oldest handicraft factory in Norway. Kistefos Træsliberi was founded beside the Kistefos waterfall in the river Randselva in 1889, and is now a museum. Here you can see how the old tree grinding factory worked, and enjoy the many sculptures in the park around the old buildings. Christen Sveaas has spent many years developing this unique activity centre. Once upon a time … This is how many of the famous Norwegian fairy tales collected by Jørgen Moe and Peder Christian Asbjørnsen begin. The two good friends sat down in Ringerike in the middle of the 19th century to write them down. And the landscape stretching from Sollihøgda in the south to Sør-Aurdal in the north really seems to be part of a fairy tale. Fjords, plains, forests and mountains inspire the visitors to look for trolls and gnomes. From “Kongens utsikt” (The Kings viewpoint) you can gaze out on this beautiful landscape. Many kings have lived here. The region has a rich history that includes six kings from the old sagas. For sports lovers, the possibilities are many and varied. We have a modern soccer stadion, a swimming hall, an outdoor scating arena , a ski jumping hill, an athletics arena, an ice hockey arena and a large indoor sports arena with many facilities including a climbing wall. All these facilities are possible because the municipalities, the county and private donors cooperate in building and maintaining them. The Ringerike Region has 43.000 inhabitants and includes the municipalities Ringerike, Hole and Jevnaker. Hønefoss is the capital of the region. The forests and lakes have been very important for the region’s development. In the 1300s, Hønefoss started building its industries along the exceptional waterfall where people lived and worked. The water driven sawmills along the Hønefoss waterfall were the beginning of the city. The waterfall can still be impressive at times. In the middle of it stands the “Oppgangssaga”, (“The water driven sawmill”), a sculpture by Knut Steen. Hønefoss officially became a city in 1852, and has become an important connection between the east and the west of Norway. Both the railroad and the main roads go through Hønefoss. We also have a broad spectrum of cultural events. Norway’s largest summer revue can be enjoyed in Hønefoss. There is a children’s show on Gladtved pier, and the show Jailhouse Rock takes place in the garden of the cultural foundation Fengselet (The Jail). A variety of other events take place in the culture centre and other local stages all year round. You can see the exciting finish of the Tour of Norway at Eggemoen. On this former military camp you now find Eggemoen Aviation and Technology Park, a national and international cluster for technology and aviation industries with with its own operative airfield Hønefoss is a vital city. You can walk from the South Square to the river and to the recreational areas in the outskirts of the city. Many people enjoy spending time in their boats on the rivers and lakes. Fishing is a lot of fun; you can even catch delicious crayfish in the right season. The charming yacht, Dronning Tyra, provides lovely sightseeing tours in the summer. Both lake Tyrifjorden and lake Steinsfjorden have many islands, which are rich in many different plants and animals. The geology of these islands is interesting, with rare rocks and fossils. www.ringerike.no 49 altitude 300 m 200 m 150 m 100 m 50 m 0m O KM å Fl 0 km 20 KM N 40 KM k So km 60 KM 55 na 80 80 KM k As km m s nd n oe 100 KM la ge km el 88 ing m H k ed 91 Fe 8 TV6 km S o m dv 08 k n 1 u n lle 7 11 120 KM a Ås km t en e nc ra 140 KM t m e ui 1 k lin ri c 13 h C s ni Fi o m ef 8 k øn 12 H ss sh ni i F m 0 km 19 ,6 (1 % ) sh ni i F 160 KM e lin ,4 /5 e lin 174 KM n oe m m k ge 174 Eg Stage profile d un m s e k or 35 L e iv .) st (e STAGE 5: FLÅ > EGGEMOEN 50 STAGE 5: FLÅ > EGGEMOEN Start area PPO Address: Svingelie 6, Flå.
