Hair Weave Masters…
The Business of Beauty
This company provides
natural weaves, plus a one-of-a-kind
beauty business network.
Courtnee and Myron Hu
ff
Courtnee Huff comes from a long line of hair stylists, and has
worked with hair extensions as far back as she can remember. At
age 6, she learned how to braid her dolls’ hair. At age 11, while
living in Europe with her family, she began helping weave extensions into her mother’s hair to create the latest styles.
“As a child, I anxiously awaited each time I could help my
mother with her hair. And I eventually started doing my friends’
hair. I loved weaving,” Courtnee says. Today, Courtnee and her
husband, Myron, own and operate Hair Weave Masters and Les
Cheveux Studio in downtown Dallas, Texas. Their goal is to offer
“business and beauty at its best.” So, in addition to utilizing
fine quality, unprocessed hair for weaving that isn’t available in
most salons, they also give their clients access to a one-of-a-kind
beauty business network.
“Our clients range from soccer moms to professional performers, and some have traveled from as far away as Greece and
Denmark to have their hair extensions done.
Our company believes in delivering quality over quantity, and
we offer a professional, top of the line product. An added bonus
is our disclosure clause, which ensures complete confidentiality,”
Courtnee says.
To meet the needs of both local and long distance patrons,
Hair Weave Masters also provides convenient travel service.
“About 50 percent of our clients are here in Dallas. The rest are
across the country and around the world in locations such as Los
Angeles, New York, Canada and France. We travel to meet the
clients, and work completely around their schedules,” she says.

Over the years, Hair Weave Masters has enjoyed great
national media exposure. In fact, the studio’s work has been seen
on A Wedding Story on TLC, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Black
Entertainment Television (BET), the BET Awards, the MTV Video
Music Awards, The World Music Awards, and many more.
Did you always want to be a hair stylist?
I was all set to become a biochemist in college. But, somehow,
I would always end up doing hair extensions on top of everything
else. Everyone would say, “You are missing your calling!” So my
husband and I figured out a way to go to college, work our jobs
and attend a school that specialized in hair weaving. We dreamed
of owning our own business so we could be free of having to work
for other people. Later, after being fired from my job twice, my
husband and mother sat me down and said it was time to go into the
business full time. I decided to give my hair career a wholehearted
effort, and eventually began the business of Hair Weave Masters.
How did you know where to find hair for weaving?
In the beginning, my husband and I started weaving with hair
that came strictly from a local beauty supplier. This was processed
hair. The poor, inconsistent quality of this product compelled me
to pursue something better. I wanted unprocessed hair, and would
have to find it from direct sources. My husband, who is very
resourceful, found virgin hair in many different regions including
South America, Russia, Italy, India and all over Europe. While he
was looking for samples, a harvester contacted us and we made
our first purchase.
NATURAL HAIR WEAVE
Is it expensive to purchase from
a wholesaler?
The cost varies from wholesaler to
wholesaler, and it depends on the quality and how the hair is handled. We have
several harvesters in many regions. We
don’t change harvesters because we only
like a certain quality of hair. The texture
and consistency requested by our clients
determines which harvesters we use.
What is the cost of receiving a
hair weave?
The consumer can expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $5,000, depending
on the technique needed to secure the
extensions or weave, and the type of hair
they choose.
And this is human hair?
The hair we use is 100 percent
human hair. It is unlike other hair that
is processed and has a lot of synthetic
fibers and animal hair fillers that stretch
it. We focus on quality over quantity.
Do people pay you to teach them how
to weave hair?
We train stylists all over the United
States and offer certification in specific
techniques. Our training consists of private classes, which can be limited to one
to two people, as well as on-site salon
training. The prices vary, and start at
$4,900 per person or group.
Do you also sell your hair to
other salons?
We provide our hair and products to
other salons and stylists around the country. Our hair lasts anywhere from one to
four years. Because of the quality, you
will probably never discard it. Our line of
hair products, Les Cheveux, is formulated
to treat hair that is used in extensions or
weaves. It is extra moist and mild.
What are some of the most popular
methods of hair weaving?
The following methods are not the
only techniques we use, but these are
some of the most popular:
Custom Sewn Net Weave: All of your
hair is corn-rolled, and a net is added to
anchor your hair wefts. This is good for
growing and resting your hair, because
it provides a barrier between your hair
and your extensions. It lasts three to
four months.
Micro-Weft Integrations: This method
adds hair wefts to your existing hair without braids, glues or tapes. Wefts are sewn
to your hair, and there is no bulk. You can
wear ponytails and up-dos. It lasts four to
six months.
Micro-Fusion: This technique involves
adding tiny units of human hair to your
real hair. Units are pre-prepared keratin
bonds, and they work as an adhesive.
It looks awesome, but the hair growth
is not as fast because you are still wearing and styling your hair daily. It’s
mostly cosmetic.
Lace Fronts: This is popular with
the stars, but I suggest it only as a last
choice. It is a full, natural hairpiece that
is adhered to the front of your hairline. It
is sometimes adhered to the back hairline
as well. The adhesive is not healthy for
your hair, and it can stunt hair growth.
How do you market your business?
We do most of our business by
word-of-mouth. We also have marketing
vehicles with signage, posters and cards
in all the local beauty suppliers. A lot of
our new clients are friends and family of
former clients. When in public settings,
we handpick ladies to give cards to. We
also host network parties.
Can you tell us more about the Hair
Weave Masters network?
We decided to start Hair Weave Masters Network because we saw a need for
women to have access to all kinds of
beauty and business needs. We always
had requests or referrals for a good place
for a facial, or for a stylist for clothes, or
maybe for a makeup artist. So we decided
we would bring all these things together.
Our networking parties feature handbags,
fashion, stylists, shopping, facials, brow
threading, hair extensions, makeup artists, promotional models, and more. Our
clients rarely get to meet one another, and
we wanted to get them together in an open
setting. So we started throwing networking parties. Our goal is to provide “business and beauty at its best.” This is one
of the ways we market our business and
show appreciation to our loyal clients.
What is your vision for your business?
I see our company selling Hair
Weave Masters franchises in different
states. I see us having representatives in
private stores selling our products. We
aspire to have one of the most popular
schools and to learn the most innovative methods and latest trends in the hair
extension industry.
HAIR WEAVE MASTERS is located on
the third floor of 1700 Commerce Place
in Dallas, Texas, across from Neiman
Marcus. The phone is 214.455.8706. For
more information, visit the Web site at
www.hairweavemasters.com.
Can you help people who have
no hair?
Yes. We only require a consultation
so we can advise the clients on what
would work best for them. We work well
with clients who have weak follicles and
with cancer recovery patients.
