It has been beautiful here in the Capital district and the students are gearing up for many exciting events! Our Golden Griffin Walk for Education, Homecoming, Breast Cancer Walk, Spirit Week, Eighth Grade Day, Open House… and we can’t forget Halloween! What a busy october! i am happy to be able to report to you that we continue to reverse the trend of declining enrollment and look forward to continued growth in the years ahead. our freshman class is larger than last year’s class and we experienced growth in the upper grades as well, with a healthy number of transfer students. our increase in enrollment was due to a number of factors, including but not limited to strong recommendations from current and former families, increased publicity and presence in the community, and improved and innovative programs. While we are encouraged by current trends, we also recognize that all schools face financial challenges. Fiscal realities make our fundraising efforts all the more critical. Bishop Maginn High School is fortunate to have an active and successful alumni and Heritage School alumni organization. Together, former students and families contribute over $100,000 annually to the operation of the school. Bishop Maginn High School is also fortunate to have many non-alumni supporters of Catholic education as regular contributors to our school. With more than 16,000 alumni, Bishop Maginn High School knows there is strength in numbers. These donations are greatly appreciated by the school and we count on them for continued support but if everyone gave even a little or a little more, we could greatly increase our annual revenue. An analysis of school contributions suggests that we could be so much stronger financially if everyone gave just a little more. The power of this approach is the number of contributions, not the size of the contribution. We are asking you to contribute to the Annual Fund in any amount that you are able. No donation is too small! What we are seeking is full participation and we thank you in advance for your consideration of our request. We know that current and prospective families make significant sacrifices to afford a Catholic education and we know that the investment that they make in their children is well worth the sacrifice. in order to provide a superior education, we need to do all that we can to promote the financial health of Bishop Maginn High School. Please know that any donation that you are able to make is making a difference in the lives of our students. To see how your donation is being put to work please visit the Bishop Maginn High School website at www.bishopmaginn.org or call to arrange a tour so you can see for yourself. As we enter the busy season of the holidays, it is my pleasure to be able to thank you for your generosity and express my deep appreciation for your support of Bishop Maginn High School. May God bless you and your family, Joseph G. Salamack, III, M.S., M.A. dear Parents, Alumni, Friends and Supporters of Bishop Maginn High School, Needless to say, these are exciting times to be a part of the Bishop Maginn Family- and even though we are a wee bit reluctant to “let go of Summer”-- together we know that we will face a new academic year with all of its planning and moving forward. We are delighted to welcome two new members to our Board- Francesca Sidotti and Mary Grimes. i am sure that the expertise and wisdom of both these women will be enriching for all of us as together we continue to work for the well-being of our entire school community. on September 6th an opening School Liturgy celebrated by Bishop Howard Hubbard took place at the Cathedral for all four of our diocesan High Schools. it was an impressive sight and all those in attendance felt the strength that comes with unity. The event was followed by a luncheon held at Bishop Maginn High School and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Once again our Mission was evident — our hospitality exemplary. The opening School Liturgy for our School Community was celebrated on September 11th and we were delighted to have Bishop Howard Hubbard as our celebrant. His presence and support of our endeavors has been with us throughout all of his years of ministry to our diocese. in the last Alumni/ Newsletter i said that one of any school’s assets was its students — they have been and will continue to be our “ambassadors” to the community at large. Another asset is and will continue to be yoU our supportive parents, friends and alumni. one of our goals this year is to foster more school spirit — your presence and support of our school, athletic and fund raising events will contribute a thousand-fold to the well-being not only of this academic year but for many future years to come. Bishop Maginn High School needs yoU — so consider being an active member of our Griffin Club. Both Robin Jira and Lori Anderson, Griffin Club Co-Presidents would welcome your assistance. you can reach them at [email protected]. one of the ways you can assist us is by participating in the “School Bucks Program.” Did you know that just by doing your ordinary shopping, you can help our school by participating in Price Chopper’s “Tools for Schools,” Hannaford Market’s “School Bucks” as well as Target’s “Schools Program”? Give the school’s office a call (463-2247) for further information as to how to participate. Even a little spending on your part can help us meet our financial challenges. Even though as a school community we will continue to face many challenges I know that with your supportive commitment, Bishop Maginn High School will be here to respond to the needs of our youth for many years to come. Together with God’s supportive grace we will continue to offer our students an education which will respond to their spiritual and corporal needs. God’s choicest blessings be with you and all those you love — and together “let us go forward on the road that has brought us to where we are ...” 2 Sister Anne Tranelli, CSJ, School Board President Fall 2013 Sharmell Brown Quiana Colon Shiann Coons Joey Deso Shokri Enbawe Maurice Friend Belinda Goodridge Demere Hannah Caitlin Hupe Kahree Langston Sierra McPherson Kathryn Nowosielski Mary Preston Lahjahniek Ramdene Kia-raja Smith Tommy Wheeler Charlita White Ja’Juan Williams Imani Young Brian Ziembiec Fall 2013 5 • lookING AHeAd • “We have seen a fundamental shift in our students and faculty toward wireless internet availability and portable devices. Students no longer want to be tied to a computer lab to complete their work. They wish to have the ability to do their work from anywhere, at anytime. Likewise, teachers wish to, and are more confident and comfortable when they can incorporate internet activities in their classroom environments, where they and their students have an established learning environment.” — rich Gilooly, director of Instructional technology, bishop Maginn High School Technology in the Bishop Maginn Classroom The Challenge Bishop Maginn High School is acutely aware of the importance of incorporating technology into classroom education. The school has taken a proactive approach, incorporating laptops, iPads and Bring your own device programs while expanding availability of internet capabilities with wifi in the school building. As a small, but growing, Catholic high school in the south end of Albany, New York, we serve a very socio-economically diverse student population. Many of our students are technology literate and savvy; however they often lack the full range of resources necessary to dependably rely on their ability to have access to such technology. In today’s digital world, students are expected to be proficient in technology; however, many schools and classrooms are ill-equipped to provide the resources to help students achieve this. Bishop Maginn High School is no exception. With internet connectivity available only in the computer labs and selected areas via wireless connections, a limited number of laptops and computers, students have limited access to technology for day-today assignments at school. The Plan • Introduce Students to Google apps, docs and chromebooks and the full range of resources of their gmail account. • Implement a pilot program of inclusive labs in core classrooms to facilitate collaboration, engagement, research and interaction. Goals • Introduce technology into classrooms for direct impact in classroom learning environments • Create an immersive experience for students without relocating to computer labs • Create a uniform program using gmail, google docs and other google apps for student and teacher communication and collaboration • Create a cost effective plan for students to acquire chromebooks as part of educational package • Expand to a campus wide wifi system with student and teacher networks HALL OF FAME DINNER • MAY 3, 2013 From left: Dan Gecewicz, VI ’70; Bill McCormick, VI ’67; Mike Motta, CM ’70; Jim Gaffney, VI ’76; Vince Foley Jr., CM ’59; Richard Gleason, CM ’67; Corey Ellis, BM ’89; Burke Adams, CM ’62; Julie Reilly, BM ’03; Megan Peper, BM ’02; Alyssa Lotmore, BM ’03; Quan Liddell, BM ’99. 6 Fall 2013 • AluMNI ACtIVItIeS • CLASS oF 1973 Memory Test d o you remember what happened in 1973, the year we graduated from Cardinal McCloskey Memorial High School, (now Bishop Maginn High School)? Richard M. Nixon was president, Secretariat won the Triple Crown, and George Steinbrenner bought the New York Yankees. Pink Floyd released its, The Dark Side of the Moon album, and Roe v. Wade was decided by the Supreme Court. Gas cost 40 cents a gallon, the average household income was $12,900, and a new home cost $32,500. The US withdrew our troops from Vietnam, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was invented, and the US launched Skylab, its first space station. Topping the charts that year were hits like: You’re So Vain (Carly Simon), Bad, Bad, Leroy Brown (Jim Croce), Angie (Rolling Stones), and Touch Me in the Morning (Diana Ross). How about in school? Remember Jack Weaver? He was our Vice Principal, and we dedicated the 1973 year book to him. Remember Sr. Florence Edward, DC? She taught us English in our senior year. How about Sr. Mary Ellen Lawrence, CSJ who taught us Social Studies? Do you remember any of the lunch ladies? Let’s try the office; do you remember Nancy Cordi, one of the secretaries? Did you know when we started at McCloskey in 1969 we had 307 in our freshman class? We graduated 233 seniors in 1973. I also remember things like, the senior door (the one on the right as you look at the front of the building), where no underserving underclass personages would dare to enter. We also had our own “private” section in the cafeteria for lunch period, (the first row closest to the entrance), and we got to leave first to go to our lockers to prepare for our next class. My hope here was to jog your memory, and maybe take you back to a very important time in your life. 8 We were ending our “childhood” journey, and becoming young adults going into the real world. Some went on to college, some went to work in business or a trade profession, and still others got married. No matter which path you took, what prepared you for that next step was the growth you experienced during our years at Cardinal McCloskey. Much has changed over the last 40 years including how much more expensive it is to operate a Catholic school today. one thing that remains of our legacy at Bishop Maginn is kids today get the same solid foundation and growth experience we all cherish. The faculty and staff work hard each day to provide our young men and women with an experience of values and learning in the Catholic tradition that will last a lifetime. In honor of our 40th graduation anniversary, I ask each of my classmates to donate $200 to the Sponsor a Student Program. That’s $5.00 for every year since 1973. The money donated to this program goes directly to provide financial aid to students whose parents struggle to pay tuition. if we all contributed, we could give close to $50,000.00 and make a positive impact on many people’s lives. if you can’t afford $200, give what you can. if you can afford more than $200, please be generous. Together we can help others to become young adults ready to face the real world, which desperately needs people with values and learning in the Catholic tradition, and who hopefully will pay it forward when their time comes. Make checks payable to Bishop Maginn High School and mark class of CM’73 in the remarks area or go online to www.bishopmaginn.org and make a secure donation using your credit card. — William Bowen, CM’73 Fall 2013 Thank You! We would like to thank our alumni from all of our Heritage Schools for donating to our 2012-13 Annual Fund Appeal! Our Annual Fund plays a significant role in the mission of Bishop Maginn High School by supporting our annual operating budget. These unrestricted gifts are important supplements to tuition income. These unrestricted gifts are an investment in our ability to provide young men and women with an opportunity to grow spiritually, intellectually, socially and emotionally. • bISHoP MAGINN HIGH SCHool ANNuAl rePort oF GIFtS • To all our alumni, parents, students, faculty, administation, volunteers, and the greater community who so generously provided a Catholic edeucation through their support of our fundraising events and programs from July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013. More than 3,000 contributors donated over $180,000 supporting events such as the Annual Fund, Golf Classic, Silent Auction, Hall of Fame dinner, Sponsor-a-Student program, as well as our other fundraising efforts.
