Music at Beck Center for the Arts The music department at Beck Center for the Arts fosters a love for music in students of all ages. From music classes to private lessons to our ensembles, students have many opportunities to explore the joys of making music. Our Early Childhood Classes are designed to introduce children from the ages of 6 months to 6 years to musical instruments and simple music concepts that will encourage future musical growth. If your child is constantly singing around the house, enjoys pounding out rhythms on pots and pans, or if you are interested in having your child eventually take private lessons, we suggest they begin by enrolling in either Kids-N-Tunes or Dalcroze Eurhythmics. After taking Dalcroze, we suggest parents register their children for Instrumental Classes, Private Lessons, or Vocal Classes so they may continue to explore music making. Whether or not your child has taken Dalcroze Eurhythmics, we suggest you consider our Instrumental and Vocal Classes and our Suzuki Violin Lessons for children. Private Lessons Private lessons at the Beck Center for the Arts are offered to anyone who wishes to learn an instrument or to increase their ability on an instrument they are studying already. Our Music Staff is an accomplished group of instructors who have years of experience helping musicians of all ages discover their true potential on a wide variety of music instruments and in singing. Ongoing Registration Students may enroll at any time throughout the year. Instruction available at all levels for half-hour, 45-minute, or one-hour lessons. Tuition for 17 weekly half-hour lessons will range from $357 to $425 ($21 to $25 per half-hour), depending on instructor. Lessons may begin at any time and are pro-rated for the remainder of the semester. Students may enroll at any time throughout the year. To schedule private lessons, contact the Music Office at 216.521.2540 x17. Registration Policies for Private Lessons Registration: Must be made prior to first lesson. Tuition and fees are due at that time. Registration can be made by phone with payment by credit card. Lessons are prorated after the session begins. Cancellations/Absences: Contracting for private instruction obligates a student for the entire semester. All lessons must be paid for whether taken or missed. Beck Center does not require instructors to make up student’s missed lessons. In the event the instructor cancels a lesson or a class, a make-up will be offered or a fee adjustment will be made. Refunds: After the third week, no refunds will be issued for the remaining lessons for which the student has registered. For private voice study for those ages 7 to 11, contact the Music Department at 216.521.2540 x17 to discuss options. Those students without prior vocal experience are encouraged to register for Beginner Voice Classes. The Young Beginner Voice Class is designed for students ages 6 to 9, Pre-Teen Voice Class for students ages 10 to 13, and Teen Voice Class for students ages 13 to 18. Read more about these classes in the Youth and Teen Music Classes sections. A note for beginners When enrolling for music instruction, parents and students have the option of either group or private lessons. In private lessons, each student may learn at his or her own pace, and the teacher is able to focus completely on that individual student’s strengths and weaknesses. A child may change from group to private lessons at any time. Group Lessons Group lessons are a good way for beginners to experience an instrument and work with other students who are also beginning their musical journey. In group settings, students develop rhythmic skills as well as improve skills of cooperation and peer interaction. See class options under Youth Music Classes on the schedule page and the course descriptions . The Suzuki Method combines a music teaching method and a philosophy embracing the total development of the child: “Character first and ability second.” Prompted by a nurturing environment of parental involvement where students listen to highquality recordings and use repetition of step by-step mastery of instrumental technique, musicality, memory and reading. Parents attend lessons and direct practice at home. As a part of the Suzuki method, the Suzuki Violin Class is offered in addition to private Suzuki lessons. Students simultaneously develop rhythmic sense, listening and singing skills, and muscle coordination. Eurhythmics unlocks creativity and opens the door to enriched and enlivened music making. This class creates rhythmic unity between the eye, ear, mind, and body. It is a unique, joyful and powerful education in music. Recommended before the study of a musical instrument and beneficial while taking lessons. Parents/visitors are welcome to observe and participate on the last day of class. Our Outreach Education program offers a wide variety of arts education activities (featuring more than 80 artists), including residencies, assemblies, field trips and workshops for schools, social service agencies, libraries, and other community organizations. Activities offered include dance, music, theatre and visual art. All Outreach Education programs are custom designed to fit your classroom’s grade, size and curriculum needs. The Arts Sampler Our popular field trip, The Arts Sampler, is a completely participatory arts sampler field trip where students grades K-12 can experience many areas of visual and performing arts firsthand. These field trips are available throughout the school year and during the summer for day camps and child care centers. Activities are also available for scout troops, community organizations and early childhood centers. Early Childhood Centers Our teaching artists and faculty are available to share their expertise at early childhood centers throughout the region. We provide developmentally and age appropriate activities to supplement the early childhood curriculum with music, theater, dance and visual arts. The arts provide opportunities for creative expressions, problem-solving, cooperative play, physical development, attention to task, following directions and many academic needs. For more information about how to bring the arts to early childhood center please contact Angel Foss at 216.521.254 x34 or via email at [email protected].
