Farm
Johnson Dairy
Baldwin, WI
For the Johnsons, farming and family is their life.
Bob and Nancy oversee Johnson Dairy, a 5th
generation dairy farm near Baldwin, Wisconsin.
Started in 1904 by Bob’s great great grandparents,
the farm has grown from a 50 cow dairy milking in
a tie stall barn to 330 milk cows and 400
replacement heifers. Bob and Nancy’s sons,
Matt (28), Brad (27) and Pat (21) are all integral
parts of the operation that make it truly
a family farm.
Growth has been gradual, the first free stall barn
was built in 2005 for 150 cows. The parlor, a
double 8 herringbone, was added the following
year. Since then, the Johnsons have added a
dry cow barn consisting of free stalls with sand
bedding and another free stall barn in 2014 which
has mattresses and sawdust bedding. Bob, Brad
and Bob’s nephew, Mitch take care of the milking
duties while Nancy and Pat care for the calves
and heifers. The Johnsons also have a daughter,
Jessica, who fills in on the farm as needed as well
as 13 month old grandson, Kayden, who will be

operates a custom square baling business in
addition to the family’s 1,500 acres of corn,
soybeans and
alfalfa. Today,

genomic breeding

genomic breeding is the
process of pulling DNA on
young calves to determine their
future production and breeding
them based on that information.
Their first cow they purchased

since then they have purchased
Larcrest Constance and

use are RSI calf pens. Their calves are housed
in indoor pens from birth to 2 months old. While
not exclusively an “RSI farm”, they have been very
pleased with the pens. “If the calves work them
hard enough they can get the gates open on the
other pens but not the RSI ones, they are designed
different,” Brad noted.
Looking toward the future, Bob says they would
like to add more cows to the dairy as well as look
at updating their grain facility. They currently have
Larcrest Carabella which have become important
parts of their breeding program. The boys flush
4-6 cows per month and have exported embryos
as far away as Japan, Spain, Italy and other parts
of Europe. Bob noted, “We have about 20-25 bulls
in stud stations now as well as bulls for sale
on the farm.”
In 2011, the Johnsons switched from bagging their
forages to a bunker system. Currently they have
2-50’x150’ and 1- 40’x150’ bunker that are covered

in the purchase of Secure Covers are the lack of
tires needed and the labor savings. “They
[Secure Covers] are working extremely well and
we are very happy with them,” said Bob. “It is
amazing how it settles the plastic down as you are
covering. We can cover a 50’x150’ bunker in an
hour”. Bob and Brad agree that spoilage has
not been an issue although they were concerned
initially upon switching from bags to bunkers and
hearing horror stories from other producers. In the
winter, they have found it easiest to take off the

A Favorite at Bag Man’s House!
Tater Tot Hotdish
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1/2 cup milk
1/2 grated Cheddar cheese
1tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 cup grated Cheddar cheese
Preheat oven at 350 F. Grease 13x9 pan.
Spread half of the tater tots in the casserole dish. Bake until headed through, about 10
minutes. Brown hamburger and onions. Season beef mixture with 2 tsp Worcestershire
sauce and rest of seasonings. Stir cream of mushroom soup, milk, 1/2 cup of cheese and
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce in a bowl.
Smash the warmed tater tots in the casserole dish. Spread the beef mixture over the
mashed tater tots. Pour the soup mixture evenly over the beef layer. top with remaining
tater tots and cheese.
Bake until hotdish is bubbly and golden brown, about 30-40 minutes
