Looking toward the future, focusing on you. BAPTIST HOMES BAPTIST MANOR 2014-2015 fiscal year REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY PROVIDENCE POINT BAPTIST HOMES FOUNDATION Who we are For more than a century, Baptist Homes Society has been steadfastly committed to providing quality care and living options for seniors of all faiths. Our notfor-profit organization was built upon a mission of benevolence and person-centered care. Through many changes in senior living and healthcare over the years, our Christian mission remains embedded in all we do. And, like the seniors we serve, we are energetic, diverse, independent, and purposeful. Our mission To provide the highest quality of living for all those we serve, while uplifting one person at a time. Our vision Baptist Homes Society Board of Directors Dr. Joseph Angelelli, Director, Health Services Administration Ms. Laurie Butler, Interior Architect Mr. Richard D. Caruso, Certified Public Accountant/CFO Ms. Valerie S. Faeth, Attorney Mr. Brian T. Gongaware, Principal, Investment Advisory Firm Mr. Terry H. Gruneberg, Certified Internal Auditor Mr. Larry W. Jackley, Seniors in our community will experience the most fulfilling life possible. Our values Mr. Frank Petrich, Elder Care Attorney Our values represent the philosophy that guides our organization in all circumstances, throughout all levels of the organization. These values are Faith, Benevolence, Service, Ethics and Wellness. Certified Public Accountant Mr. Mark Pelusi, Realtor Dr. William D. Presutti, Jr., PhD, CPM, Retired Mr. Jeff Tindall, Attorney and Pastor Mr. Jan O. Wenzel (Chair), Attorney Letter from the President and CEO and the Board Chair Providing high quality services to area seniors and their families is not just our mission, it is a blessing to be part of this ministry. Through our broad range of services, Baptist Homes Society serves nearly 800 older adults on a daily basis. We touch another thousand or more lives each year through outreach and community wellness programs. When you consider our community events— blood drives, food drives, and fundraisers—our reach extends even further. Yet, the true measure of success is not in the number of lives entrusted to us, but on the impact we have on those in our care. Rehabilitation outcomes and satisfaction surveys help us measure how well we are doing, but the kind words of appreciation from families, the generous gifts from families and friends to support our mission, the smiles—and sometimes the tears—we share with those who live in our communities—those are the real evidence of our success. In fiscal year 2014-2015, Baptist Homes Society refinanced the long-term debt associated with the development of Providence Point. This achievement may seem far removed from our stated mission, yet, it is at its core. Just as the decision to build the first campus in Mt. Lebanon 100 years ago was a major step in meeting our mission, the commitment of the Board of Directors ten years ago to build Providence Point was also a milestone. It allowed us to create a new model for senior living based on individual choice, independence, and wellness. Due to the changing economic and healthcare environment, refinancing of the long-term debt took on critical importance this year. We would like to acknowledge the Board of Directors, the staff, financial advisors, and all those who dedicated themselves to helping us accomplish this goal. Al Allison, Jr. and Jan Wenzel As you’ll see throughout this report, we also continued to move ahead with several strategic goals and objectives during the year, many of which were dependent on the completion of our refinancing effort. We could not do any of this without the support and trust of our families, friends and supporters. We thank you, and all who work toward providing outstanding services for seniors. Together, with God’s continued guidance and blessing, we will achieve our mission every day. God bless you, Alvin W. Allison, Jr. President & CEO Jan O. Wenzel Chair, Board of Directors Board of Directors: (l to r) Terry Gruneberg, Thomas Ague (former member), Valerie Faeth, Laurie Butler, Brian Gongaware, Jan Wenzel, Richard Caruso, Larry Jackley, Frank Petrich, William Presutti and Jeff Tindall BAPTIST HOMES SOCIETY 2014-2015 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 1 Looking toward the future In fiscal year 2014-2015, the Board of Directors and the executive team of Baptist Homes Society accomplished the intricate and arduous task of refinancing the organization’s long-term debt and moved ahead with several strategic initiatives and service enhancements. New partnerships were created, special events took place, and our communities thrived. Throughout this Report to the Community, you’ll see that everything undertaken by the organization was done so with one goal in mind: to continue our mission. New technologies, shifting demographics, economic challenges and societal change continue to impact every facet of our lives—including the choices and services available to older adults. Though many of these changes are beneficial, others present new challenges for us and those we serve. In 2014-2015, these were some of the major steps taken to ensure that our legacy of quality care continues: -Refinancing A new chapter in the long legacy of Baptist Homes Society began in 2009 with the opening of Providence Point. It represented the first new land acquisition in a century and the scope was greater than any project the organization had taken on before. Just as a century before, when leaders of First American Baptist Churches in the region recognized the need to provide senior care services, Baptist Homes Society’s Board of Directors and leadership recognized that, to continue our legacy of quality care, it was time to lead the way with a new model for senior living. With the new community, came new short and long-term debt obligations. In 2012, Baptist Homes Society paid off the short-term debt associated with Providence Point’s development. Just prior to the end of this fiscal year, Baptist Homes Society refinanced its long-term debt. Baptist Homes Foundation Board of Directors - New services With guidance from Baptist Homes Foundation, Baptist Homes Society’s communities developed grant partnerships to enhance services. The B. K. Simon Family Charitable Foundation renewed a grant to underwrite the cost of three Baptist Homes activity positions, enabling the organization to offer more one-to-one activities with residents and more creative and engaging programs to enrich their quality of life. The Mary Hillman Jennings Foundation awarded a grant for a nine-month program of music therapy for residents in the memory support and Alzheimer’s units at both communities. This will benefit our residents and provide clinical data for best practices in art and music programs for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias across the region. Data will be used by BHS administrators, Duquesne University faculty and students, and therapists, and findings will be shared with Alzheimer’s and dementia-care facilities throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. - Expanded Foundation Board of Directors Baptist Homes Foundation restructured the committees and responsibilities of its Board of Directors and created a plan to organizationally restructure the Baptist Homes Auxiliary under the Foundation. -Technology Technology is changing the way we deliver healthcare and other senior living services, and residents of Baptist Homes Society communities benefit. Last year Baptist Homes Society communities adopted MatrixCare as its electronic healthcare record-keeping provider. Electronic medical records facilitate communication and promote accuracy and responsiveness. Baptist Homes Society also hosted a training session for MatrixCare users, and invited organizations from across the western Pennsylvania region to also participate. Compassion James T. BAPTIST HOMES SOCIETY 2014-2015 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 3 Looking toward the future With the expertise provided by a team of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Information Systems students, under the direction of Professor Larry Heimann, Baptist Homes Society completed an assessment of its information/technology structure. The CMU team provided recommendations on how best to address security, hardware and software needs. Thanks to a combination of grants, Baptist Homes Society has entered into an agreement with Elder Care Innovations, LLC to acquire a wireless pager system that can notify staff if a resident is about to fall or if his/her briefs are wet, called Hello Nurse. We are the first healthcare facility in the country to employ the system, and are now under agreement to expand it throughout both communities. - Rubitection, a Carnegie-Mellon University start-up company has been in communication with Baptist Homes to participate in a research project for a new handheld diagnostic device for early detection of pressure wounds and bedsores. Baptist Homes was identified as a potential beta site because of our stable staffing and rigorous assessment processes. Memberships & Affiliations Leading Age American Baptist Homes and Caring Ministries Faith-Based Network PACAH Pennsylvania Assisted Living Association Leading Age PA Southwestern Pennsylvania Partnership for Aging - Promoting Wellness Baptist Homes Society continues to expand its wellness initiatives and to look at trends to ensure we offer the most up-to-date and advanced programs. Support programs for families and residents have been expanded in areas such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, resident caregiver support, and transitions through the continuum of care. “Wellness Works,” a program that is overseen by our Wellness and Human Resources Departments continues to expand. A broad range of educational and fitness classes are offered to residents through “Wellness Works.” A staff wellness program is also featured and is designed to help increase awareness of healthy habits and reduce illness and absences, as well as provide health insurance co-payment discounts. Focusing on you No matter where an individual may enter the spectrum of senior living and care at a Baptist Homes Society community, they can be assured that the services we provide will help them live a full and meaningful life. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has placed new significance on resident-centered planning and care to give seniors more choice and more options for how and what services are delivered. Baptist Homes Society, having always been committed to providing person-centered care to seniors, welcomes this new focus in the senior living industry, and strives to offer living options that promote choice, purpose and independence. In the 2014-2015 fiscal year, our initiatives included: - Celebrating milestones In addition to Baptist Manor’s 35th anniversary, the 20142015 fiscal year also marked the 105th anniversary of the organization and 100 years since Baptist Homes built its first permanent facility on Castle Shannon Boulevard in Mt. Lebanon. These milestones were recognized through a celebration and through the creation of a traveling exhibit that provided information on our history and vision. The exhibit was on display at both campuses for several months. On May 29, Baptist Homes held a 100th anniversary party for residents and staff to mark the date the cornerstone was laid. - “On The Move” Providence Point was one of 28 University of Pittsburgh “On the Move” program research sites attempting to determine to what extent exercise is beneficial to the physical and mental health of persons 65 and older. During a 12-week study, residents were asked to to walk and carry out everyday activities and complete an assessment. Findings will provide evidence to help determine the value of such programming for older adults in our area and across the country. Our communities offer countless opportunities to engage in wellness activities, including spaces for solitude and privacy, like the Baptist Homes gazebo and the Providence Point courtyard. BAPTIST HOMES SOCIETY 2014-2015 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 5 Focusing on you A glimpse at the numbers 2 Senior living and care communities 910 Residents on average in the continuum 747 People served in our healthcare residences in fiscal year 2014-2015 588 Full and part-time staff 205 Volunteers contributing more than 7,500 hours of their time and talents 18,000 Daily activities per year made available to residents 28 Strategic partnerships helping to provide services 4 Seasonal farm to table dinners 480 Continuing Education credits awarded through our CE programs $7,200 Donated to local food banks - Support from the community The success of Baptist Homes Society as a senior living and care provider is reliant upon the continued trust and generosity of those who support our mission. That couldn’t be more evident than in the improvements made to Baptist Manor earlier this year. The 100-unit residential living HUD apartment building celebrated its 35th anniversary. The well-maintained building has had a waiting list since the day it first opened. Through gifts from longtime friends Becky and John Surma, the Baptist Homes Auxiliary, and the George H. Campbell, Lillian S. Campbell and Mary S. Campbell Foundation, ceiling fans were installed in the living room and bedroom of all 100 Baptist Manor apartments this year. This upgrade gives residents more lighting and some individual control over the temperature of their unit year-round. Another donation made anonymously to Baptist Manor this year allowed us to convert bathtubs in 60 of the apartments to the more accessible cut-out tub. - Parkinson Foundation When the Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania saw a wish list item in a recent issue of Along the Journey, they reached out to Baptist Homes and provided us with 19 new reclining chairs for resident and lounge areas. The gift is deeply appreciated by our residents and all who care and embrace our mission. Advancing Excellence in Nursing Homes campaign, continually updating its reporting measures to help ensure we achieve all quality goals. We are committed to meeting all CMS requirements and to adopting best practices in serving today’s seniors, communicating with caregivers and support providers, and creating a person-centered environment. - Community Outreach Annually, Baptist Homes Society staff visit more than a dozen area senior and community centers on a semiannual or quarterly basis to bring health and wellness programs to older adults. Educational sessions about heart and brain health, exercise classes like chair yoga, and demonstrations of healthy eating and staying active are presented in free, easy to understand programs. Demand for these programs at various venues around the Pittsburgh region continues to grow. - Spiritual Care The growth of our communities has increased the need for spiritual services. In addition to the many regularly scheduled Bible study and church services, Baptist Homes Society’s full-time chaplain assisted families in holding weddings and memorial services, and organized programs to honor our Veterans. - Quality Assurance Initiatives Since its inception, Baptist Homes Society has focused on providing excellent care for every individual within our communities. Recently, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed updates to the requirements for nursing homes who participate in Medicare and Medicaid. In anticipation of these CMS changes, Baptist Homes Society has been involved in the Above left: Enjoying the Savor the Seasons dinner are Tony and Pat Waterman, Rosemary Killmeyer, Bill and Lavisa Ward, and Judy and Leroy Snyder. BAPTIST HOMES SOCIETY 2014-2015 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 7 Community outreach and social benefit 2014-2015 Community Benefit Report Nearly 106 years ago, Baptist Homes Society came into being through the commitment of area Baptist churches to bring their vision of quality living for area seniors and orphans to life. Today, our vision statement—Seniors in our community will experience the most fulfilling life possible— continues to reflect that aspiration. Our commitment to care for older adults goes well beyond the walls of our communities, and our benevolence reaches far beyond our doorstep. In addition to providing $2,534,000 in benevolent care to supplement Medicare and Medicaid shortages, and underwrite shortfalls in third-party reimbursement, we provided more than $400,000 to cover costs for those living in our Personal Care Residences whose funds have been depleted so that they may no longer be able to pay the full cost of their care. Baptist Homes Society reaches out to area senior programs and service groups, to healthcare workers, and families. Our outreach efforts range from hosting free continuing education programs for healthcare professionals to visiting area community centers and providing engaging wellness programming for seniors. We continue to expand these efforts out into the surrounding community, working with organizations like Mount Lebanon Village and Lifespan to fund educational and social programs for their constituents. Much of what we do would not be possible without the support of a large roster of volunteers. This includes the Board of Directors who were instrumental in the refinancing process, going above and beyond to assure smooth transitions. The Baptist Homes Auxiliary members provide manpower and monetary resources that make a profound difference for our residents. The residents of Providence Point’s patio homes and apartments have also become integral to the quality activities and programs provided in the nursing, personal care and memory support areas of the Healthcare Residence. Although many of the services provided by staff and volunteers in partnership with others in our community are given a monetary value in the following Community Benefit Report, they are truly invaluable. - Community health and wellness services...................................................................................... $27,821 In 2014-2015, our health and wellness programs reached more than 1,000 seniors at various community centers, libraries and other venues. Through free engaging programs, seniors were provided with information and activities that support their quest for wellness. Friends and families of our residents, guests, volunteers and others also benefitted from informational sessions on topics such as veterans’ benefits and Medicare enrollment. - Educational Programming and Staff Development....................................................................... $27,518 Baptist Homes and Providence Point regularly open their doors to serve as training and observation sites to many healthcare educators. Our expert staff are also invited to provide educational programs for students and senior living and healthcare professionals. Internships, lectures and demonstrations in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Technical Institute, Duquesne University and many others, benefit students, our staff and ultimately, our residents. - Flu shots.............................................................................................................................................. $6,692 Each year, residents, staff and volunteers are encouraged to take advantage of flu shots which are administered for free by our staff at the beginning of flu season. - Quality of life programming.......................................................................................................... $227,839 In fulfilling our mission of providing the highest quality of living for those we serve, we ensure that residents have access to physicians, services and social events by providing access, transportation and opportunities. We also address the health and wellness needs of caregivers, staff and families, offering enrichment programming throughout the year, ranging from nutrition information to transitions in care and grief support. -Reaching out to other service organizations.................................................................................. $58,060 Baptist Homes Society receives many blessings from community service groups, families, foundations and other organizations who align with our mission. In turn, we support them and others throughout the year. Food collections, fund-raisers and donations, large and small, are made to groups such as the Alzheimer’s Association and South Hills Interfaith Ministries and others. This charitable work is embedded into our work culture. - Regional investment and involvement........................................................................................ $443,689 Baptist Homes Society supports the communities it serves through participation in and contributions to their events and programs. We also work closely with local officials and support municipal services through payments in lieu of taxes. - Uncompensated care and services..............................................................................$2,951,000 Baptist Homes Society’s commitment to providing benevolent care has been unwavering. No senior who has outlived his or her resources has been asked to leave our communities due to an inability to pay for services. The charitable and uncompensated care we are able to provide annually is always a challenge, yet it remains at the core of our mission and vision. - Volunteers—our most precious resource.............................................................. $186,923 Volunteers assist residents, work at special functions, offer their expertise as members of the Board of Directors and give generously to the organization—sharing precious time, talent and resources. In the last fiscal year, more than 170 volunteers donated more than 8,400 hours to benefit the seniors we serve. Baptist Homes staff Marvin Eicher, Leslie Evans, Jessica Haines, and Jerome Nkhuwa serve at a staff appreciation event. Total 2014-2015 Fiscal Year...............................................................................$3,928,912 BAPTIST HOMES SOCIETY 2014-2015 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 9 Baptist Homes Foundation 2014-2015 Donor Report Baptist Homes Foundation Baptist Homes Foundation, the charitable arm of Baptist Homes Society, is the cornerstone of our legacy of benevolent care. Our success in this area began on the shoulders of our founders and their vision of providing care for older adults through Christian ethical behavior and responsible stewardship. It continues today with your support. We would not be able to enhance the quality of life for older adults in such a dynamic way without our generous donors and the dedication and leadership of our Board. This year, we were blessed to receive a variety of gifts and achieve several strategic goals, including: • A $675,000 gift from the Estate of Martha M. Crone, believed to be the largest single bequest in our history; • Foundation and corporate grants totaling more than $215,000 to underwrite a music and art therapy project, provide recreational staffing and address capital and program needs; • Nearly $220,000 in Employee Appreciation Fund contributions to honor our nearly 600 dedicated employees serving on both of our campuses, the largest EAF goal ever achieved; • Nearly $107,000 in net proceeds from our 22nd annual Charity Golf Invitational; • An irrevocable and binding $100,000 pledge from a July 1, 2014 —June 30, 2015 Providence Point entry fee, the first gift of its kind ever received by BHF; • An expanded Foundation Board of Directors and new pool of advisors to help us explore new and better ways to garner community support for our charitable mission; • Untraditional first-time gifts like: an antique car, commercial storage space and mineral rights that will provide a 15% royalty on net-proceeds from the oil shale generated there; and • Countless gifts of time and talent by our Auxiliary and volunteers who passionately serve those entrusted to our care. We are grateful to have this opportunity to thank the individuals and organizations who share our passion for our work and who so generously and compassionately provide support for the mission and ministry of Baptist Homes Society. We also wish to acknowledge those of you, who like Martha M. Crone, have included Baptist Homes as a beneficiary in a will, living trust, gift annuity or other form of planned gift. You make it possible for us to provide the highest quality of living for all those we serve, not just for today, but for years to come. We pray that God will bless you for your generosity. $500,000+ Estate of Martha M. Crone $100,000-$499,999 Mr. & Mrs. Carl W. BAPTIST HOMES SOCIETY 2014-2015 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 15 Financial Overview Baptist Homes Society and Affiliated Corporation Operating Revenue Baptist Homes Society continues to meet the economic and demographic challenges that are prevalent in the senior living services industry. New government payer methodologies, debt requirements, and a growing and increasingly aged senior population continue to be addressed to provide uninterrupted care and services to those we serve. Occupancy in all levels of care at both Baptist Homes Society communities was at a stabilized and sustainable level for the entire 2014-2015 fiscal year. Due to the final fill-up of independent living at the Providence Point campus, operating revenues increased 7% over the previous fiscal year. Operating expenses decreased 1% from the previous fiscal year as a result of the continued and on-going efforts to control costs without compromising the quality of care and services provided to our residents.
