1, 2, 3! Qui est
là?
Take a deck of cards and remove the cards
numbered ace to 5. Shuffle those cards and
place them in a pile upside-down on the table.
Say: “1, 2, 3! Qui est là?” (“1, 2, 3! Who’s
there?”), then turn-over a card. Ask your child
to read the number on the card and to show the
same number of fingers. If necessary, check your
child’s answer by counting the elements on the
card and the number of fingers. Continue the
game, then switch roles.
• Reading numbers.
• Reciting numbers.
• Associating a number
with a quantity.
• Labelling each object

• Representing numbers
in different ways.
Variation: Instead of asking your child to show
the number using his/her fingers, ask him/her to
use objects such as blocks or tokens.

missing word. Sing other songs leaving out more
and more words. Once your child is skilled at this
game, sing relay songs with him/her by starting a
song, then stopping it and letting him/her pick up
where you left.
Let’s chitchat!
Invite family members to chitchat or to discuss
a particular subject. Everyone gets a chance to
speak but at the sound of a bell, whomever is
speaking stops and lets the next person either
pursue the conversation or pick a new topic he/
she would like to discuss. To help a child who
is out of ideas, suggest he/she do one of the
following:
-
tell an anecdote;
-
describe a picture;
-
speak of his/her favorite book’s
cover page.

appropriate vocabulary.
• Using simple sentences

sentences.
• Developing imagination.
Choose sounds (e.g., [o], [i], [on] or [in]) and
select 2 to 4 pictures which elements rhyme
with these sounds. Print and cut out the chosen
pictures. Ask your child to make a soupe de rimes
(rhyme soup). First, gather together the pictures
that rhyme with one of the chosen sounds and
put them in a pot. Then, add the other pictures
that rhyme. When all the pictures are in the pot,
stir the soup while saying the following words
with your child: “Voilà une soupe pleine de rimes!
Miam-miam!”(“Here’s a soup full of rhymes!
Yum-yum!”).
Variation: Choose a sound and ask your child
to find objects that rhyme with that sound and
to place them in a large pot. When his/her hunt
for objects is over, ask your child to stir the soup
while saying : “Voilà une soupe qui rime avec
le son [_]! Miam-miam!” (“Here’s a soup that
rhymes with the sound_! Yum-yum!”).

Play detective with your child by asking questions
that will allow him/her to become familiar with this
type of book; for example: “Peux-tu trouver la page
qui montre 7 objets?” (“Can you find the page
with 7 objects?”); “Peux-tu me montrer autant de
doigts qu’il y a d’objets?” (“Can you show me as
many fingers as there are objects?”); “Combien
d’objets y aura-t-il sur la prochaine page?”
(“How many objects will there be on the next
