The 2015 Event Calendar has been realised and promoted by the Lucca Public Institutions in collaboration with
the Association Strada del Vino e dell’Olio di Lucca, Montecarlo e Versilia.
The goal, both for the activities and plans of communication, is to promote a product, such as the Event Calendar,
where the most important promotional events of the typical food find their space, both locally and nationally.
The Lucca area compasses a particular uniqueness of natural environments – the sea, the mountains, the valleys
and the hills –and historical centres, live custodians of a thousand years old culture, which for centuries have
supplied our rural society. An ancient agriculture that through the cultivation of the land, of the vine and the olive
tree and the fishing practice has produced unique knowledge and flavours.
The goal is to offer the tourist or the enthusiast that visits our lands, the opportunity to live and taste a “basket” of
Lucca typical products, presented as tastings or for sale during the events listed on the Calendar.
From the prestigeous doc Montecarlo wines of the Lucca hills, to the lightness of the Lucca extra vergin DOP
olive oil, from the fragrant bread of the master bakers of Altopascio to the artisan high quality butchery production
of Gombitelli, Valle del Serchio and the cheeses produced by the mountain cheese makers, to the refined fish
dishes of Versilia with the thousand colours of the qualified fruit and flower productions.
An invitation to stroll through the routes of the Wine and Olive Oil Road of Lucca, Montecarlo and Versilia during
the course of the year, through a rich calendar of events, to learn about high quality products , appreciate the
hospitality of our hotels, agriturismi, restaurants and historical villas, to visit art towns and historical hamlets, and
enjoy the evening, on the Versilia coast, in the golden light of a magic sunset over the Tirreno sea, accompanied
by the passionate lyrics of Giacomo Puccini.

SAN BIAGIO’S AGRICULTURAL MARKET AND EXHIBIT

It takes place during the last week-end of March and opens the Lucchese spring time
which is dedicated to gardening and to all the plants that make this season unique. 150
exhibitors: nursery production of plants and vegetable garden plants, trees, bulbs, tools
and garden furnishing, excellent food products. VerdeMura takes place in the atmosphere of the Renaissance city walls of Lucca between the bastion of San Martino, on the
walkway of Porta Santa Maria until the San Frediano Platform.
PIETRASANTA
An animal farm and a farmer’s market in association with CIA and COLDIRETTI will be
set in the square Piazza Leone Tommasi (ex Pesa) and simultaneously, in the square
above this one, a food fair will take place to celebrate the different flavours coming from
all over Italy.

IN THE PROVINCE OF LUCCA
The “Compito” is a small ancient hamlet nestled on the Lucca side of the Pisano Mount, a
privileged place for the cultivation of camellias, so that both areas of Pieve and Sant’Andrea di Compito have been named “Camellias Hamlet”. The programme comprises: visit
to the “Camelietum”, a place specifically created to gather a collection of the different
species, from the most ancient ones to the most recent. Some of them are very rare,
often on the path to extinction. The goal of the camelietum is to preserve each variety of
flower camellia and to represent the ideal place to learn all about the cultivation of the
species. The excursion on the “camellia path” through the hamlet, the visit to Mr. Guido
Cattolica tea plantation, only one in Europe, the market exhibition of the artisans of art
and ingenuity, an exhibition of cut flowers inside the ancient villas of people from Capannori and a series of collateral initiatives that will allow to capture and appreciate all the
peculiar aspects of the territory. Thanks to the Tour of the Camellias in Villas, on board of
connecting shuttles which will connect the different villas, it will be possible to visit also
private villa gardens of Capannori that for the occasion will be opened to visitors. The
twenty fifth Ancient Camellias Exhibition of Lucca will valorise as each year, the artistic
and landscape heritage of the Capannori area and will juxtapose to the eyes of the many
visitors, the territory, the villas and the events to such an elegant plant like the camellia

The 6th edition of the event will take place in the streets and in the squares of the historical centre “the vegetable garden path: celebration of vegetable gardens, seeds and
herbs”. The squares, the streets and the private courtyards of the historical centre of Camaiore will become the set for author vegetable gardens, vegetable stands, plants, tools,
fruit trees, flowers and food products of the Versilia and Lucca area

of Altopascio, site of the National Association of the City of Bread. History, culture and hospitality, ancient tradition which this land has been known for since ancient times, thanks

historical cultural heritage of the Capannori territory. The historical and monumental villas will

Villa Lazzareschi, Camigliano and Wineries of the Capannori Municipality. An itinerary of tastings of the Capannori hills wines and local products through the wineries on board of shuttles
with starting point the beautiful Villa Lazzareschi. Many of the Capannori wineries producers of
great wines located in the areas of Matraia, Valgiano, Segromigno in Monte, Gragnano, Tofori,
San Gennaro, Petrognano. Along the itinerary, besides enjoying a panoramic view, the visitors
can stop and explore the local farms and agriturismo (farm stays). In the Villa, the FISAR sommelier will guide the participants through the discovery of the tastes and flavours of the territory.

Hot air balloons and champions coming from all over Europe will challenge each other
in the traditional and famous Capannori Trophy. An event that is part of the national and
international aerostatic programme. The protagonists of the festival will take shape from
dawn to sunset when the weather conditions are perfect and able to guarantee a safe
flight. For the first time in Capannori it will be possible to fly on board the wonderful air
giants throughout the Trophy. Thanks to certified companies, everyone will be able to
experience the magic of flying with hot air balloons purchasing tickets on-line. Emotions
and solidarity; in these days on board the hot air balloon “Comune di Capannori” it will be
possible to fly with special safety measures for disables, and take active part to the project
“Capannori Flies Solidarity”. It’s important to remember that the hot air balloons are also
eco-friendly because the gas that fuels them is one of the cleanest among fossil fuels.
On Saturday, starting at 9:00 pm after sunset the atmosphere will turn magical: the hot air
balloons will be inflated and as if they were giant light bulbs, they will light up with music,
creating the highly anticipated Balloon Glow. The colours of each single hot air balloon,

in the Valleriana countryside, in the Villa Basilica Municipality, with exhibitions of typical
chestnut wood products accompanied by a Medieval show. A tour throughout the whole
village between artisan shops, where you can see real artisan craftmanship and you can
stop at tasting areas represented by the “flavour path”, where you can taste the Lucca
cuisine with typical dishes, combined with DOC wines from the Lucca Hills and Montecarlo. Also the Metato is open for tours, the country life museum, the old village club, the

Boccella, San Gennaro – Artè - The market exhibition dedicated to the local, Tuscan and Italian legumes. When the evenings start to cool down after the hot
summer and the Lucca area celebrates its richest and most exciting cultural time
of the year. The third edition of this event, proposes also this year three days of
celebrations at Palazzo Boccella in San Gennaro with the aim to appreciate the
virtuous relationship between the country side and the city, the local production
as protection and guarantee of the preservation of the territories biodiversity as a
whole. There will be exhibitions and tastings of legumes coming from all over Italy
to honour biodiversity, history and culture of the territories represented by the producers that have come with their products, conferences, flavours and knowledge;

The Farms and Agricultural companies from Montecarlo will be opened to the public to
accompany the visitor on a new and exciting tour, thanks to the family like hospitality of the
owners and with the qualified presence of the wine makers and the sommelier of Fisar and
Ais; in the cellars, the best setting for the Montecarlo wines, qualified exhibitors on local products will be present. The “wine bus” will guide the visitors through the farms of Montecarlo,
on the roads through the vineyards and olive groves. The free shuttle bus will take directly
to the entrance of the cellars; it will also be possible to visit in this occasion the historical
Fortress of Cerruglio and the wonderful Rassicurati Theatre.

A new appointment with the Agriculture and Territory Exhibition, dedicated to the promotion of the typical local products promoted by the Chamber of Commerce of Lucca and
organised by the Strada del Vino e dell’Olio Lucca Montecarlo e Versilia, in the evocative
setting of the porch of Palazzo Pretorio in San Michele square in Lucca. The exhibition is
now over 30 years old, it is part of the historical events during the traditional “Settembre
Lucchese”, and presents to the public the typical products of the Province: DOC and IGT
wines from the Lucca Hills and Montecarlo, extra virgin olive oil, honey, spelt and chestnut
flour from Garfagnana. A showcase to present and promote the territory and the Lucca
products to the numerous tourists that crowd the city during the month of September.

CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL AT PASCOLI’S HOUSE

Giovanni e Maria Pascoli arrived in Castelvecchio di Barga on October 15th 1895, to settle in the
house that will become their home. A journey that began in Livorno, first by train to Lucca and
then by carriage until the village of Castelvecchio, finally on foot along the path, that already at
the time, connected the village with the parish church of San Nicolò on the Caprona hill. Beside
the church, the main gate to the “chiusa” and at the end, beyond the fruit trees, the vineyards
and the garden, the much desired house, where they would rebuild the family nest. It is important to remind of this event, because for Pascoli, the Castelvecchio house, besides representing
all his beloved things, has been the place of great inspiration and poetic production. Casa Pascoli, today, is surely one of the most active cultural heritage centres of our country. In a letter
sent on February 8th 1901 to his Lucchesian friend Alfredo Caselli he wrote: “...and the villa will
be purchased. (...) but it will be the centre of happiness!”. A place where he could finally enjoy
moments of happiness, joy and cheerfulness after experiencing so much suffering. This is why
we would like to re-live this day as a people’s festival, because Pascoli, and all he has left to us,
belongs to the history of our community and its higher values. And such a celebration cannot
be so, unless our children are the main protagonists. We decided to dedicate it to the children
because Giovanni and Maria Pascoli, have always regarded infancy with love and consideration. Giovanni Pascoli even dedicated some poems to young people: L’aquilone (The Kyte),
Valentino. As well as many well-known popular traditions still surviving today dedicated to the
children like: La Befana. Maria had the adjacent building to the house restored, and destined to
be used as a kindergarten for the less fortunate children of the village. For all these reasons we
decided to name this event “children’s festival”. There will be many games, but also music and
poetry. As all festivals there will also be a food section dedicated to the flavours of the autumn
and to the fine Lucchesian wines. A real day of celebrations

The wine festival, that has been a traditional event for over 45 years during the month of
September in Montecarlo, proposes a programme full of interesting initiatives promoting the
typicality of our land: music and popular culture shows, cultural and paintings exhibitions,
tastings of wines and local products. Another occasion to appreciate the history, the culture,
the local traditions, the hospitality and the food of the Montecarlo land.
In the garden of the Palazzo Mediceo, in the late afternoon in the months of July and August, each week, Fabrizio Diolaiuti hosts the “talk show” Medici Aperitif, tastes of Tuscany.
Protagonist of each meeting will be a recipe, a product, a great chef and a restaurant, to
speak about Tuscan products, ideas, culinary suggestions and more.

A festival that repeats itself after each wine harvest and oil pressing, in the moment in
which the wine expresses its new perfumes and the newly pressed olives offer intense
green which anticipates the future extra virgin oils. Appointment in the historical centre
of Montecarlo where, among the new wine and oil, it will be possible to taste the typical
products of the season like the chestnut pancakes “necci”, bruschetta and roasted chestnuts.
An event promoted by the Chamber of Commerce of Lucca, addressed to the culture and
the agricultural and food productions of the entire Province. Numerous the appointments
that will cover the entire duration of the event. On the calendar, meetings and debates
over food and wine and tourism promotion.

It is one of the most important Italian events dedicated to flowers, plants and gardening taking place every year during the first week-end of September in the suggestive setting of
the urban walls of Lucca (Bastions of San Regolo and La Libertà) in the Botanical Garden
and in the underground passages of the walls. About 250 specialized Italian and international nursery exhibitors will be present, offering all that revolves around the plant world
with particular or newly introduced plants, ancient and new cultivations. Meeting point for
enthusiasts and professionals of the sector it offers the visitors an interesting cultural, botanical and horticultural programme with themed exhibitions, conferences, editorial news
