Lac Simon. TC Media - Rob Amyot
Road to recovery
Safe and sound in their care, the volunteers
at Forever Homes Rescue made the tough
decision that they couldn’t give Renny, the
orange, double-coated dog, the required care.
The one-year-old’s long road to recovery
began February 5 when Rosie Animal Adoption
agency brought the dog to Pierrefonds Animal
Hospital.
There, Renny was diagnosed with a broken
tail, and worse – a pelvis that was previously
fractured a month before his arrival that has
recently healed.
“He had a depressed look in his eyes,” said
Elysia Rodi, a canine physiotherapist who
helped take charge of Renny’s recovery.
It was either surgery to break the pelvis once
more to allow it to heal properly, or a less painful rehab.
The latter would change Renny’s life
forever.
Rodi, the jovial physiotherapist who’s currently studying to become a certified canine
rehabilitation practitioner at the University of
Tennessee, began with basic range of motion
exercises until she introduced Renny to the
Pierrefonds-based clinic’s underwater
treadmill.
“He just started swimming and he loved it.
Then we did more exercises to regain his
muscle mass and slowly, his real personality
came through,” she said.
Like all 15 dogs under Rosie’s foster care
program at any given time, Renny was given
the proper veterinary treatment at Pierrefonds
Animal Hospital; veterinary costs at the
expense of Rosie, a volunteer-run adoption

After being left for dead in a snowbank, a
hit-and-run the likely cause, a northern dog is
getting a second chance at life thanks to three
animal agencies.
Renny, a one-year-old Husky mix, was
found in Lac Simon in Northern Quebec on
January 30 by Sarah Saintsbury of Forever
Homes Rescue during one of the organization’s missions.
“We saw right away that something was
wrong…he was extremely thin, had trouble
standing up and could barely walk,” she told
the Chronicle last week.
Though most dogs in far off northern
communities are considered stray, some living
without food for up to three days, Renny wasn’t
homeless, said Saintsbury.
“We had found him near someone’s house.
We knocked on their door and convinced
them to release him to us,” said the trained animal behaviourist, who has undertaken what
she called Nordic rescue missions for the last
five years.
As many of these northern communities are
burdened with an overpopulation of stray dogs,
added Saintsbury, Forever Homes Rescue
extracts 25 to 60 dogs per mission.

The debate rages on
The electronic cigarette proponents have
long argued that this new tobacco-less product
is a safer alternative for regular smokers trying
to end a bad habit.
Critics say the long-term effects of the battery-powered device, which in some cases uses
liquid to produce vapour, others an infusion of
nicotine, are still unknown.
The liquid used is said to contain propylene glycol (PG), known as a food additive.
The health risks remain unknown.
Though it isn’t authorized for sale in
Canada, e-cigarettes that don’t contain nicotine nor make health claims are not yet
illegal.

Pierrefonds-Roxboro will make it official
during an April 7 council meeting, according
to borough spokesperson Johanne Palladini.
Last week, the borough’s mayor told the

is simple – the lack of information.
“It’s pretty clear there isn’t enough information available to tell us that this is a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes,” said Dimitrios
(Jim) Beis.
Pierrefonds-Roxboro will be the seventh
borough of the City of Montreal to ban e-cigarettes in public buildings.

West Island College goes electric, saves teachers thousands of dollars
First high school in Quebec to install electric car charging stations
● [email protected]
Since the West Island College
became the first high school in
Quebec to install electric car charging stations in May 2014, science
teacher Philippe Marsolais has
saved at least $2,500 in gas
consumption.
Over the last 11 months, he’s used his Chevy
Volt to drive over 17,000 km, averaging nearly
half a litre per 100 km. The $40,000 hybrid runs
entirely on a fully-charged battery until it drops West Island College teachers Patrice Nantel and Philippe Marsolais say they've saved

Environmentally, the private school in

Financially, a government subsidy program,
Branche au Travaille, was reimbursing Quebec
employers up to 75 per cent or a maximum of
$5,000 for installing charging stations.
The decision was a no brainer, said Lisa
Lafontaine, WIC director of finance and
operations.
“We realized that the future benefits of installing the charging stations far outweighed the
costs, and the two charging stations were installed in May 2014,” she told the Chronicle
last week.

Lafontaine expects other employees to follow Marsolais’ lead and purchase hybrid or
electric cars in the near future.
The addition of the charging stations was
also a good opportunity to educate the WIC
student body about the environment.
“At West Island College, ‘green’ initiatives
form a part of our culture and we strive to educate our students on the importance of being
environmentally responsible. Our students,
staff and administrators are continuously looking for new ways to reduce waste, save energy
and help to preserve the environment,” said
Lafontaine.
Cost of charging stations
The school paid over $800 for the two charging stations, 75 per cent of which was
refunded.
The school’s electricity bill hasn’t seen a
significant increase, according to Lafontaine.
“Hybrid cars take approximately three to
four hours for a full charge, but since the
employees have installed chargers at their
homes, they only use our chargers to ‘top up,’”
she said.
Since Marsolais drives 25 km to and from
WIC, he only needs a partial charge from the
private school.
Based on his estimation, the charging of his
Volt should cost the school $15 to $20 a year.
The ‘Branche au Travail’ program is open to
Quebec businesses until Dec. 31, 2016, unless
the government budget allocated to the program runs dry.

Ste.Anne de Bellevue
receives funding for future
tree-planting project
Project viewed as a way to eventually replace public
property ash trees
KirKland
KirKland
Ste. Anne de Bellevue is being proactive in
their fight against the eventual appearance of
the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) as the small
town moves forward with a new, recently-funded urban tree-planting project to take place
this summer.
The town’s project to plant over 80 trees of
12 different species based on climate change
research won a $12,500 award from TD Bank’s
Friends of the Environment Foundation (TD
FEF) and Tree Canada, as part of the TD
Green Streets program.
“What we propose is an innovative treeplanting project aimed to deal with replacing
our ash trees, which are threatened by the invasive insect pest the Emerald Ash Borer, with a
higher diversity of tree species that take into
account the latest research on climate change,”
said city councillor Ryan Young, who filed the
application for the award.
Ste. Anne was one of 22 cities across
Canada to receive funding urban forestry
projects last week.
Proposals ranged from community tree
plantings to urban farming to Adopt a Tree
programs, according to Tree Canada.
“Planting trees and growing the tree canopy
in urban centers can have a tremendous
impact on the health of people and the communities they live in,” said Michael Rosen,
President of the non-profit organization Tree
Canada in a released statement. “Programs
such as TD Green Streets will help communities from coast to coast reap these benefits for
many years to come.”
A total of $300,000 was awarded.
Ste. Anne’s environment committee carefully selected trees like the red oak, the tulip
tree, sycamore, and more.
“Climate change or global warming is
expected to shift the geographic ranges of some
tree species. Because habitats of some types of
trees are likely to move northward, it seems
wise to start planting tree species in our area
that have a more southerly distribution,” Young
said of the decision behind the selected trees.
Ste. Anne will document and monitor the
trees it plants over the course of the year; the

The thief left in an older, four-door grey car
the 57-year-old clerk believed to be a Mazda.
She couldn’t read the licence plate, said
Const. Daniel Maheu of the SPVM, because
it was covered in a black substance.
The car escaped the scene heading west on
Gouin Boulevard.
KirKland
Neighbourhood police station 3 released
last week the description of the armed robber
who allegedly held up the Bowl-O-Drome in
Pierrefonds earlier this month.
On March 5, a man described as a 5 feet 8
inches tall white male sporting a black hoodie
and a scarf of the same colour, and sunglasses
held a female clerk at gun point until she gave
him money from one of the bowling alley’s
cash registers.

Black bears Genie and Juno made their first
appearance of the season at the Ecomuseum
Zoo on March 17 after sleeping all winter.
The female bears are among the 115 animals that were once injured or orphaned when
brought to the island of Montreal’s lone
outdoor zoo located in Ste. Anne de Bellevue.
Juno, in particular, had been found by
wildlife officers in Manitoba at the approximate age of 1 and weighing 10 pounds – far
below normal. She arrived at the Ecomuseum
Zoo from the Assininboine Park Zoo last year.
For more information on the bears, and the
other animals at the zoo, visit zooecomuseum.ca.
