2014 Summer Ballet Intensive
Weeks of July 21, July 28 and Aug 4
This summer, DDC&G is bringing the Summer Ballet Intensive experience to you! Master teachers
will be traveling to DDC&G from New York, Houston, and Pittsburg to share with students a wide
range of education. They bring experience from the Dance Theatre of Harlem, BalletMet, Les
Grandes ballets Canadiens, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and more!!!
Students may attend any one week, but are encouraged to attend all three. Students returning
home from other intensives are also highly encouraged!! Those attending all three weeks will end
the Intensive with a special student performance the evening of August 8.
Classes:
Classes run daily from 9-3:30. *Rehearsal for students attending all three weeks is daily from 3:30-4.
Daily classes offered include Ballet, Pointe or Pre-Pointe, Variations, Flamenco, Stretch & Strengthening,
and a special week-end Q&A with visiting teachers.
Eligibility:
2014-2015 Placement Ballet VI– Ballet Intensive (A, B and C) and College-Level Dance Majors.
Tuition:
Similar to those who travel for Intensives, credit will be applied for the relative amount of regular DDC&G
tuition. Students are not expected to attend their DDC&G classes during the intensive (except where a
company commitment demands), therefore tuition will be credited toward the Intensive. Additionally,
students attending the Intensive will receive credit for their attendance and their absence will not count
against their overall attendance scores.
A $200/week deposit is due by May 30, 2014 in the DDC&G office.
One Week: $400 Two Weeks: $750 Three Weeks: $1100*
*Those attending all thee weeks will perform in a showcase the evening of August 8.
Details:
Students should bring a water bottle, healthy light lunch and snacks, and everything necessary for class.
Black leotard, pink convertible tights, and a neat bun are required daily. For Flamenco, students need
character shoes and a long flamenco-style skirt.

Judith Winters Grywalski
Received her Classical Ballet training at the prestigious Houston Ballet Academy in Houston, Texas under the direction of Ben Stevenson and Principal
Teachers Anne St. Paul, Nicholas Polajenko and Nina Popovich. Full scholarships to further train with Michel Pannieff in Los Angeles CA and Madame Natalie Krassovska in Dallas Tx , both legendary Principal dancers and teachers
from the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Ms. Grywalski joined the Dallas Ballet in
1972 under the direction of George Skibine and Marjorie Tallchief dancing in
classical and contemporary ballets. In 1978 Ms. Grywalski was thrilled to work
with Jazz pioneer Gus Giordano in Chicago, Illinois performing his choreography in concerts and theaters until 1980. Married to fellow dancer Joseph Grywalski in 1981 and relocated to Columbus, Ohio where the couple performed with OperaColumbus and Columbus Youth Ballet directed by Shir Li Wu. Judith joined the Ballet Faculty at CYB (Columbus City Ballet) in 1987.
Concurrently Judith studied RAD Ballet Pedagogy with Royal Ballet alumni Alan Miles and in 1991
joined the faculty of BalletMet Dance Academy, Company School of BalletMet Columbus. Further
Teacher Training in RAD Syllabus under the direction of Artistic Director John McFall and School Director Daryl Kamer. In 1995 David Nixon became Artistic Director of BalletMet Columbus and Yoko
Ichino the Director of the Professional Track program of the Academy. Judith was invited to teach in
the Professional Track Program teaching technique and pointe. Ms. Ichino developed a wholistic approach to classical ballet training including floor exercises and set combinations to increase muscular
understanding of turn out, flexibility and extension. In 1998 an opportunity to work with Tim Veach of
Columbus Dance Theatre presented and Judith became School Administrator and Ballet Faculty
working with Mr. Veach and Roberta Taylor.
In 2007 Judith moved to her hometown Houston Texas and joined the Ballet Faculty at Galveston Ballet and Amy Blake Academy of Dance teaching and coaching students who have participated in summer intensives at American Ballet Theater, Texas Ballet Theatre, Ben Stevenson Houston Ballet
Academy, Tulsa Ballet, Austin Ballet and Joffrey Ballet Chicago as well as coaching finalists in the
Houston Youth America Grand Prix . Judith is the proud parent of beloved Ballet teacher Martine Clark
in Dublin, Ohio; Gabrielle Grywalski, free lance ballet dancer in New York, NY and Marisa Grywalski
company member Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, PA.
Gabrielle Grywalski
Gabrielle Grywalski is a native of Columbus, Ohio. She received her R.A.D.
syllabus training at Columbus Dance Theatre where she danced solist roles
in Ballets icluding La Bayadare, Carmina Burana, Sleeping Beauty, The
Nutcracker, and Pas de Quatre. For her senior year she trained at BalletMet Columbus and performed with the professional
company. While in the Pre-Pro progam, Ms. Grywalski joined YouthMet!
She performed works by Alvin Ailey such as Revelations and Satisfaction.
Upon graduation, Ms. Grywalski moved to dance with Pittsburgh Ballet
Theatre in the Graduate Program, performing with the company in Don Quixote, The Nutcracker and Derek Dean's Alice in Wonderland. In the grad
program, she worked with choreographers such as Alan Obuzor, (Texture
Ballet) and Victor Plotnikov. After to moving to Houston, Texas -her second
home- Gabrielle began dancing Classical Chinese Dance with Dance of Asian America. In 2011, Ms.
Grywalski made the move to New York City, where she is currently dancing with Terra Firma Dance
Theatre. Since living in NYC, she has performed with Ballet Neo, New York Couture Fashion Week,
Derek Mitchell Dance, Prime Cut Film Production and Obey Not Studio's on multiple music videos.

Nikki Hefko
Nikki Hefko is a freelance dancer and dance instructor living in New York
City. After receiving her primary dance training in Mobile, Alabama, she
then went on to Loyola University New Orleans and graduated with honors.
While at University, Nikki performed professionally with the New Orleans
Ballet Ensemble. She then moved to New York to dance with the Dance
Theatre of Harlem touring nationally and internationally. Since, she has
danced with Les Grands Ballet Canadiens and as a freelance dancer with
companies across the country. In 2007, Nikki helped found Janusphere
Dance Company under the direction of Darion Smith. In addition to JDC,
she also worked as a principal dancer with Madison Ballet and WillowOak Contemporary Ballet .
Nikki is on faculty at The Dance Theatre of Harlem School, Brooklyn Ballet School and Joffrey Ballet School and directs The Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Summer Intensive Program.
Griset Damas Roche
From La Habana, Cuba, Ms Roche is an international performer, choreographer and teacher of Flamenco dance and Ballet. Since 2005, Griset owns and
directs “Griset damas Escuela de Flamenco” and has won the Traditions of
World Festival in Bogota Columbia in 2004, 2005 and 2007 among numerous
other achievements noteably, nominated as of the 5 best shows of the year in
Columbusa with “Salir del Paraiso”. Her training began with Ballet at Alejo Carpentier School and Flamenco at Centro Andaluz, Cuba. She danced professionally as a ballerina with and teacher with Instituto Superior de Arte for three
years spent 6 years in the soloist dancing program. She has danced with numerous Ballet and Flamenco masters and continues her career to this day. For

Marisa Grywalski
Marisa Grywalski, originally from Columbus, Ohio and received her early
Classical ballet training with Roberta Taylor at Colimbus Dance Theatre
and with summer intensives at BalletMet Columbus and Houston’s Ben
Stevenson Ballet Academy. She trained at Houston Ballet Academy’s
full time program working with Sally Rojas, Sabrina Lenzi, and Claudio
Munoz. Marisa graduated in 2009 and was accepted to Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Post Graduate Program. In 2010, Marisa accepted a full
scholarship to Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Post Graduate Program. At
PBT, Marisa performed Soloist and Principal roles in graduate student
productions including Odette in Swan Lake Act ll and Dark Angel in George Balanchine's Serenade. She has performed with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Company productions of The Nutcracker,
Swan Lake, Don Quixote, Serenade, Giselle, Moulin Rouge, and Cinderella. Marisa was promoted
to company member at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre in 2014.
Sonia Welker Orrante
Sonia Welker Orrante is a Columbus native
and a graduate of BalletMet's original pre- professional program under the direction of Don
Eryck. She received additional training on full
scholarship in the most advanced level at the
Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet and Richmond Ballet Schools. She was an Arts and
Letters Awardee in 1990 and in 1991 earned
top honors at the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) competition in
Miami, FL. This award ultimately lead her to
become a Presidential Scholar in the Arts and
travel to Washington, D.C. to dance at the
Kennedy Center for President George Bush.
Sonia Welker Orrante joined BalletMet's company in 1991. During her 15 years with the
company, she danced leading roles in ballets
The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty, Dracula, Giselle, Dangerous Liaisons and Carmina Burana and originated title roles by choreographers David Nixon, John
McFall, Birgit Scherzer, Dwight Rhoden and Julia Adam to name a few. Over the course of her
career as a principal dancer she guested with Cincinnati Ballet, National Ballet of Zimbabwe,
Northern Ballet Theatre in Leeds, England, and Blue Lake FIne Arts Camp performing throughout Europe. In 2003 she earned the prestigious Violetta Boft Award for her work as an artist
with BalletMet. She retired from BalletMet as a dancer with the second of her three children in
2006 and has been teaching and coaching exclusively since. In 2008, after a 10 year affiliation
with the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp both dancing and teaching, she was appointed Co-Director
of the International Program and traveled throughout France and Germany with 35 students.
She is currently a faculty member of the BalletMet Dance Academy and NorthPointe Dance
Academy.
Deonte Hansel
Deonte was born in Detroit, Michigan and most recently, danced
with BalletMet Columbus for two seasons. Deonte received his
training from the Gwinnett Ballet Theater under Lisa Sheppard and
Kelly Spa. Mr. Hansel also trained at the Rock School and Houston Ballet on scholarship. Mr. Hansel joined the Louisville Ballet
Company after graduating from the South Carolina Governor’s
School for Arts and Humanities. He also has danced for the Atlanta Ballet, Orlando Ballet, and most recently the Milwaukee Ballet Company. Some of his favorite performance credits include
George Balanchine’s Who Cares, Twayla Tharp’s Golden Section,
Mark Morris’ Moulin Rouge, and Val Caniparoli’s Lambarena and
Le Corsaire. Starting Summer 2014, Deonte will join the faculty of
Dublin Dance Centre & Gymnastics.
