INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Glamour Boy is here and ready to
play in Sunday’s Super Bowl. Glamour wife is out of sight - so
far - unless you count the front page of the New York Post.
Super model Gisele Bundchen landed the one cover she probably wasn’t after, gracing the tabloid with her “Tommy” after
the paper got hold of an email she reportedly sent to friends and
family, asking them to channel their “positive energy” to quarterback husband Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in
the NFL title game against the New York Giants.
“This sunday will be a really important day in my husband’s
life. He and his team worked so hard to get to this point and now
they need us more than ever to send them positive energy so
they can fulfill their dream of winning this super bowl. ...” she
wrote, according to the Post, which didn’t say how it obtained
the message. “I kindly ask all of you to join me on this positive
chain and pray for him, so he can feel confident, healthy and
strong. Envision him happy and fulfilled experiencing with his
team a victory this sunday.”
Bundchen was said to have confirmed it all with an email to
the paper saying: “I am surprised that you received this email; it
was a private note only sent to close friends and family.”
Not exactly bulletin-board material, but darned close for a
week that has been exceedingly dull by Super Bowl standards:
no name-calling, fights or even a whiff of controversy..
A copy of the Post made the rounds at the Giants’ media
availability Thursday morning. Brady was asked about it, too,
but no fireworks there:
“I don’t know anything about that, so I don’t know what it is.”
Brady and Bundchen have taken great pains to try to be
a normal couple - well, as normal as one of America’s most
watched twosomes can be.
He’s a three-time Super Bowl champ with two MVP awards
and a $72 million contract. He’s GQ worthy with rugged good
looks and a flair for fashion, and his hair is a source of endless
fascination. She’s a long-locked Brazilian beauty who made her
name with Victoria’s Secret lingerie and now moves everything
from shampoo to couture. She’s the biggest name in modeling,
racking up $45 million in 2011, according to the latest annual
list by Forbes.com.

IFAF WORLD TEAM
WINS 2012 INTERNATIONAL BOWL
IN 35-29 VICTORY OVER U.S. UNDER 19 TEAM

Spurs past Hornets 93-81
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Tim Duncan
scored 19 points, Tony Parker had 18 and
the San Antonio Spurs won their third in a
row, beating the New Orleans Hornets 93-81
Thursday night. A night after Duncan scored 25
in a win over Houston, it was somewhat surprising that he even played. Coach Gregg Popovich has vowed to limit the 35-year-old’s minutes and playing the West’s worst team seemed
to invite a night off.
But the Hornets didn’t make it easy. Carly
Landry scored 17 points and Greivis Vasquez
added 16 points staring in place of Jarrett Jack,
keeping New Orleans close before the Spurs
blew out the game in the fourth.
Jack sat out with a sore knee but the pain
isn’t considered serious. The Hornets have lost
12 of their last 13.
Tiago Splitter added 16 points and Danny
Green had 11 off the bench for the Spurs, who
improved to an NBA-best 12-1 at home. They
need to stockpile all the home wins they can:
After hosting the NBA-leading Oklahoma City
Thunder on Saturday night, the Spurs won’t be
back home for three weeks.
The San Antonio Rodeo runs the Spurs out
of town every February — but the franchise has
never seen a stretch like this. The compressed
schedule in wake of the NBA lockout has San
Antonio in the midst of playing 16 of 21 games
outside the AT&T Center, the toughest road run
in Spurs history.
BULLS 105, KNICKS 102
NEW YORK (AP) — Derrick Rose scored
32 points to outduel fellow All-Star starter Carmelo Anthony.
Rose had 15 in the fourth quarter and repeatedly answered when the Knicks rallied. With
Chicago leading 88-83 midway through the
final period, the reigning MVP scored on three
straight possessions. He split Anthony and
Amare Stoudemire to flip in a shot from past the
backboard, then hit a 3-pointer to put the Bulls
up 95-88.
Stoudemire had 34 points and 11 rebounds
but missed a 3-pointer that would have tied
the game with 10 seconds left. New York has
lost 10 of 12 and now heads into its first backto-back-to-back since 1999 with coach Mike
D’Antoni facing more questions about his job
security. New York must travel to Boston to
play Friday night before returning home to face
the Nets on Saturday.
Anthony had 26 points but just 4 in the
fourth quarter and missed a desperation 3 at
the buzzer that would have sent the game to
overtime. Twice in the last 2 minutes with the
Knicks trailing by 3, he had his shot blocked.
NUGGETS 112, CLIPPERS 91
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Danilo Gallinari scored 21 points, including all five of his
3-pointers, and the Denver Nuggets beat the
Clippers 112-91 Thursday night, ending Los
Angeles’ season-high four-game winning streak.
Ty Lawson added 18 points, Arron Afflalo
15 and Timofey Mozgov 11 for the Nuggets,
who had lost two straight overall and three in a
row to the Clippers, their longest active losing
streak against any team.
Blake Griffin led the Clippers with 18 points,
Chris Paul added 15 points and nine assists, and
Caron Butler had 11 after missing Wednesday
night’s win at Utah with a sore lower back. Earlier Thursday, Griffin and Paul were voted to
the starting lineup for the All-Star game, giving
the Clippers two players on the team for the first
time since 1976.
WARRIORS 119, JAZZ 101
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Stephen Curry
scored 29 points and had a season-high 12
assists and Monta Ellis added 33 points.
David Lee added 23 points and 14 rebounds
for the Warriors. Golden State has won two
straight since losing the first four games on its
six-game homestand.
Curry and Ellis, who were on the bench for
most of the fourth quarter in Tuesday’s win
over Sacramento when coach Mark Jackson
played mainly reserves, didn’t get much of a
rest against the Jazz while leading the Warriors
to their highest point total of the season.
Paul Milsap had 15 points and 11 rebounds
for Utah. The Jazz played without starting point
guard Devin Harris, who was a late scratch due
to a strained left hamstring.
KINGS 95, TRAIL BLAZERS 92
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) (AP) —
Marcus Thornton scored 20 points and John
Salmons had a season-high 19 for Sacramento,
which snapped a five-game losing streak.
The Blazers had beaten the Kings in 12 of
the previous 13 games, but Sacramento ran off
five straight points late in the game and held off
Portland, which missed two 3-pointers in the
final 10 seconds.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2012 - AUSTIN, TX - The IFAF World Team won
a thrilling 2012 International Bowl 35-29 despite a rousing U.S.
Under-19 National Team comeback that fell just short in the
fourth quarter. The game marked the first loss in international
competition at the senior or junior level by Team USA, including
the 2007 and 2011 IFAF Senior World championships, the 2009
U-19 IFAF World Championship and two previous International
Bowls.
University of Manitoba runningback Anthony Coombs rushed
for a game-high 147 yards and two touchdowns and Burlington
(Canada) Nelson High School quarterback Will Finch completed
11-of-14 passes for 169 yards and a pair of scores to lead the
World team to the victory.
The World Team got first half touchdown catches from
Tevaun Smith and Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren and a rushing touchdown from game MVP Anthony Coombs to take a 21-9 commanding halftime lead at Austin’s Kelly Reeves Sports Complex.
And the game appeared won at 35-16 with a little more than
five minutes remaining until the hosts scored twice to move within
touching distance of what would have been a dramatic comeback.
The World Team recovered an onside kick and ran out the clock
before treating second-year head coach Greg Marshall to a Gatorade bath on the sideline, sparking wild celebrations.
“I’m a little numb right now,” Marshall said. “I’m just so
proud of our coaches and our players. We had one week to come
together and execute. We put in a complicated game plan because
we knew we weren’t going to beat them playing straight up. It
was a great team effort.”
Team USA took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter when Sean
Maguire threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Romond Deloatch on
the Americans’ first play after a promising World Team opening
drive had been halted. The score was set up by a fumble recovery
and return by Malcom Brown on that first possession.
But the World Team answered with a stunning 75-yard touchdown pass from Will Finch to Gilbert-Knorren on the next series
to knot the score at 7-7, making the receiver the first player to
score in two International Bowls.
Gilbert-Knorren - a University of Saskatchawan product - finished the night with three catches for 125 yards and a touchdown.
After an exchange of defensive stops, Deloatch fumbled a
World Team punt, maintaining the visitors’ momentum at the
USA 46 late in the first quarter.
Canada’s Coombs capitalized and capped the drive with a
19-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter to
give the World Team a 14-7 lead, breaking tackles through the
middle to fight his way into the end zone. The lead marked the
first time a US junior national team had trailed in six games in
international competition and the first ever World Team lead in
an International Bowl.
The USA cut the lead to 14-9 when it forced a safety by the
World Team after a fumble in the end zone by quarterback Jesse
Mills was recovered by one of his offensive linemen.
Team USA was unable to move the ball on its ensuing possession and the score remained 14-9 until a short USA punt set
the World Team up at its own 44-yard line with just over three
minutes remaining in the half.
Mills led the drive down the field and connected with Smith
for a 19-yard score in the corner of the end zone with 1:05 to go
in the half and the score stood at 21-9 in favor of the World team
at the break.
The World Team forced a three-and-out by the USA to start
the second half and a stellar punt return by Japanese back Shingo
Maeda set the World team up at the USA 40. After moving down
to the 20, the World settled for a 37-yard field goal attempt by
Dillon Wamsley that was blocked by the USA’s Daje Johnson.
The blocked kick was caught by Jarrett Irving, who returned it out
to the 29-yard line but fumbled as he went down and the ball was
recovered the World’s Casey Chin.
With new life following the turnover, the World Team rushing
attack moved the ball down to the USA eight-yard line before
Finch found defensive end-turned-tight end Daryl Waud in the
left corner of the end zone for his second touchdown pass of the
game. The World Team led 28-9 with 2:47 to play in the third
quarter.
On the next USA possession Javelle Allen found receiver
Frank Epitropolous open in the middle of the end zone for a
12-yard scoring strike to cut the World lead to 28-16 with 17 seconds left in the third quarter.
But Coombs opened the fourth quarter with 62-yard touchdown scamper to extend the lead to 35-16 with 11:48 left in the
game.

Crusaders were able to pull out the victory, by a score of 27-25.
In the Varsity game, the Vikings came out strong and were able to go into half time with the
lead and the momentum. However, with a few adjustments, the Crusaders were able to take the
lead and control of the game late in the 3rd period, with Brock Goodwin (pictured with the ball)
leading the way for the Crusaders.
Goodwin finished the night leading all scorers with 17 total points, despite being 7 of 15 from
the free throw line, he also finished the night with 3 blocked shots, while teammate Williard
Matu’u was able to finish the game with 13 points, as the Crusaders downed the Vikings 49-42.
Leading scorer for the Vikings was Sione Latu, who led his Vikings with 13 points, despite fouling
out in early in the 4th period. Schedule:

Commissioner Goodell says…
34 teams likely if LA included
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Commissioner Roger Goodell says if the NFL puts a team in Los
Angeles, it is probable the league would expand to 34 franchises.
Appearing Thursday night on “Costas Live” on NBC Sports Network, Goodell said the league
“doesn’t want to move any of our teams.”
“We probably don’t want to go to 33” teams by adding just one new club if a suitable stadium
is built in the Los Angeles area, Goodell said. Instead, the league would consider adding two. An
odd number of teams would pose scheduling problems, including at least one club being off each
week, and would create one division with five teams.
There has been speculation an LA stadium could house two NFL franchises, although Goodell
did not address that with host Bob Costas.
Goodell says there are several issues that must be solved in LA, particularly which of two
current stadium proposals is best. He didn’t suggest any timetable for returning to Southern
California.
Goodell talked about head injuries and said the NFL was helping other sports and the military
through its research into concussions.
“We’re in a leadership position in sports. People look up to the National Football League,”
he said. “We do have a game that’s rough. There are inherent risks playing it. But the secondhighest incident of concussions is girls’ soccer. So what we’re learning about concussions in
football is helping other sports. Not just every level of football, but every other sport.
“Now the NFL is sharing our research with the Defense Department to help treat our military
personnel in the field.”
Earlier in the program, Patriots owner Robert Kraft and several current and former players
were asked about lawsuits against the league by ex-players who claim they weren’t warned about
or protected enough against brain trauma during their careers.
The Associated Press published a story Thursday based on interviews with a dozen former
players who have filed suits against the league. What emerged was, at best, a depiction of a culture of indifference on the part of the league and its teams toward concussions and other injuries.
At worst, there was a strong sense of a willful disregard for players’ well-being.
“We have to protect our players,” Kraft said. “The league is very strong in this area and I hope
we are prolonging careers” with the NFL’s concussion research.”
Added Colts center Jeff Saturday, a member of the players’ union executive board: “The
reality is we don’t know what kind of damage it is doing long term. It’s the biggest problem we
face in the NFL now.”
LA story: 2 Lakers
and 2 Clippers get
NBA All-Star nods
NEW YORK (AP) -- From Kobe Bryant to Chris Paul, Blake
Griffin to Andrew Bynum, the NBA All-Star game is shaping up
as an L.A. story. Two Lakers and two Clippers were voted as
starters Thursday for the game, the first time in 15 years that two
pairs of teammates have been voted to start for one conference.
“It’s pretty cool,” Griffin said.
Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant prevented a clean Los Angeles
sweep of the Western Conference starting lineup by earning a forward spot for the Feb. 26 game in Orlando.
Dwight Howard of the host Magic - unless he’s traded first
- was the overall leading vote-getter with 1.6 million. LeBron
James and Dwyane Wade are going together again from Miami,
while MVP Derrick Rose of Chicago and New York’s Carmelo
Anthony round out the East starters.
The Clippers and Lakers are developing a spirited rivalry this
season, but they’ll have to get along for a night to give the West a
second straight win in the NBA’s midseason event.
Bryant and Paul will be in the same backcourt two months
after the NBA, as owners of the Hornets, killed a trade that would
have sent Paul to the Lakers. Instead, he was dealt shortly after
to the Clippers, and he has teamed with Griffin to make them one
of the league’s most exciting and improved teams, leading the
Pacific Division over their Staples Center co-tenants.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to be voted as an All-Star starter,”
Paul said. “I want to thank the fans for their support. It’s even
more special to be starting with one of my teammates.”
Griffin and Bynum are first-time starters, while Bryant earned
his record-tying 14th consecutive nod.
Griffin said he’s not planning on defending his title in the dunk
contest, which he won by dunking over a car last year in Los
Angeles. “It’s not really my thing. I said that last year,” he said.
Griffin was a reserve selection last year, when he also played
in the rookie game. “Last year it was hectic,” he said. “I’ll try to
tone it down and try to get a break.”
It’s the first time since 1997, when Houston had Hakeem Olajuwon and Charles Barkley, and Seattle sent Gary Payton and
Shawn Kemp, that two pairs of teammates have been voted to
start for one conference. Bryant joins Shaquille O’Neal, Jerry
West and Karl Malone - all one-time Lakers - with his 14th
straight starting nod. He earned his fourth All-Star MVP award
last year, equaling Bob Pettit’s NBA record. Bynum grabbed the
starting center spot that for years went to Yao Ming, who retired
last summer. Griffin was chosen as a reserve forward last year,
when he became the first rookie All-Star since Yao in 2003.
Starters were chosen by fan balloting, and none of the races was
close. The reserves will be chosen by voting of the head coaches
from each conference and will be announced next Thursday.
Bryant led all West players with nearly 1.6 million votes. Rose
collected 1.5 million to finish third among all players, a year after
becoming Chicago’s first starter since Michael Jordan.
“I remember not being in the All-Star game, just wanting to be
in the game. It’s something you should take to heart, that I take to
heart,” Rose said before the Bulls’ game against the Knicks. “Just
want to accomplish something special while I’m in the league,
and one of the accomplishments is being on the All-Star team.”
Howard will make his fifth consecutive start, and his status
will provide much of the intrigue surrounding the event. He has
told the Magic he wants to be traded and they have given his
agent permission to talk to select teams, putting the franchise in a
difficult position of deciding whether it should deal its superstar
before hosting the weekend.

Giants’ DeOssie
will start Super
Bowl with: Tails
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- One word from Giants special teams
captain Zak DeOssie will begin the Super Bowl.
With more than 100 million people watching in the United
States alone, the long snapper from New York, other Giants captains and their counterparts from New England will see referee
John Parry display both sides of a special commemorative coin for
the opening toss.
Then, DeOssie will choose his side. “I’ve called ‘tails’ every
single time this year, and that’s what it’s going to be this weekend,”
DeOssie said in an interview Thursday.
Chances are, he’ll be right.
The National Conference has won the last 14 Super Bowl coin
flips, though that hasn’t turned out so well in the end. The American Conference has won nine of those 14 title games.
Want to pick the Super Bowl winner? Might as well just flip
a coin. The team that’s won the opening toss is only 22-23 in the
title game, evidence that it has very little impact on whatever happens next.
It’s still a special moment, one that gamblers lay money on
and businesses build promotions around. One chain is offering
its rewards program customers a free pizza if the coin comes up
heads. It’s also significant in another way: A rare game decision
left entirely up to the players.
“I’m out of that one,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said
Thursday. “We have our captains and they decide who’s going
to make that call. We do keep track of who wins and who loses,
thank you very much.”
DeOssie, whose father Steve also played in the NFL, got the
honor on a whim.
He and the other two Giants captains - quarterback Eli Manning and defensive end Justin Tuck - were walking toward midfield before the season opener in Washington when the subject
came up for the first time.
“Eli turned to Tuck and said, ‘You want to call it?’” DeOssie
said. “And Tuck said, ‘Nah, I don’t feel like it. I don’t need to call
it. Zak, you want to call it?’ I said yeah, sure.”
It was his job the rest of the way.
In the NFL, the visiting team gets to call the coin flip. DeOssie
went 4-4 during the regular season, and the Giants chose to receive
the kickoff rather than defer all four times. It came up heads during
a second-round playoff win at Green Bay, but DeOssie got the
coin to land his way twice during a win at San Francisco in the
NFC title game, including overtime.
Coughlin wouldn’t say what he’ll pick if it comes up tails on
Sunday. He has chosen to receive the kickoff most times.
Like everything else in the NFL, coin flips are tracked for
trends.
During the 2011 regular season, teams that won the flip and
chose to take the ball went 71-79, according to STATS LLC.
Teams that deferred to the second half were 64-42. Weather and
home-field advantage play into those results.
The first Super Bowl coin flip landed on the grass at Los
Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Jan. 15, 1967. Green Bay captains Bob Skoronski and Willie Davis met Kansas City’s captains
at midfield, won the toss and the game.
Two years later, the Jets’ Joe Namath guaranteed a victory. The
Jets won the coin toss and fulfilled the guarantee, too.
There have been a couple notable changes in the pregame flip
since those early title games.
During a Thanksgiving game in Detroit in 1998, Pittsburgh’s
Jerome Bettis called tails for the overtime coin flip. The referee
thought he heard heads and decided the Steelers lost the flip. They
then lost the game 19-16 on a field goal, prompting a rule change.
Now, the captain calls it before the coin leaves the referee’s
hand. The league changed its coin flip rule again for the 2008
season, allowing the winner to defer its choice to the second half.
Recent history between the Giants and Patriots suggests the flip
will be a midair starting point for something spectacular.
Four years ago, New England was one win away from completing a perfect season when Eli Manning drove the Giants to a
winning touchdown. David Tyree made an incredible third-down
catch, trapping the ball against his helmet for a 32-yard gain. Manning threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress with 35
seconds left for a 17-14 win.
There was more Manning magic when the teams played again
on Nov. 6 in Foxborough. He threw a 1-yard touchdown pass with
15 seconds to go for a 24-20 win.
No wonder Patriots quarterback Tom Brady cares less about
who gets the ball first than who has it last.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if this game came down to the last 2
minutes,” Brady said. “I hope we have the ball. I hope Eli doesn’t
have the ball.”

The Nuggets won 112-91. LaMarcus Aldridge had 28 points and
14 rebounds for the Blazers, who have lost
four straight on the road, where they are
3-9 this season.
Jamal Crawford scored 17 points and
Raymond Felton 15 points and 10 assists.
Portland made just 8-of-16 free throws.
Tyreke Evans scored 18 points, Marcus
Thornton and Jason Thompson added 13
points and 12 rebounds for the Kings.
GRIZZLIES 96, HAWKS 77
ATLANTA (AP) — Rudy Gay scored
21 points to lead five Memphis players in
double figures and Memphis blew out the
listless Atlanta Hawks.
The Grizzlies pulled away late in the
first half, closing on an 18-7 run that gave
the Grizzlies a 10-point lead at the break.
They totally blew it open in the third quarter
after Atlanta missed its first seven shots and
turned it over three times.
The Hawks were coming off a 4-1 road
trip that left them tied with Miami for the
Southeast Division lead.
But they looked exhausted in their return
to Philips Arena, putting up ugly jumpers,
playing pedestrian defense and struggling
just to hang on to the ball.
Tony Allen and O.J. Mayo scored 18
apiece for Memphis, while Mike Conley
had 15. Marc Gasol turned in a doubledouble with 11 points and 10 rebounds,
while Dante Cunningham chipped in with
10 rebounds off the bench.
Josh Smith led the Hawks with 11
points, playing only 19 minutes.

‘street clashes’
over soccer riot
CAIRO (AP) -- Police shot and killed two protesters in
Suez, Egypt, early Friday, a health official said, the first to
die in clashes that erupted around the country after a riot at a
soccer stadium killed 74, as sports violence spiraled into a new
political crisis for Egypt.
Protesters blame police for failing to control the riot after
the soccer game in Port Said. In Cairo, thousands demonstrated
Thursday in front of the Interior Ministry, which oversees the
police. Demonstrators threw rocks, and police responded with
clouds of tear gas. Hundreds were treated by medics.
In Suez, witnesses said about 3,000 people demonstrated in
front of police headquarters after news spread that one of the
victims in the Port Said riot was from their city.
Police responded with tear gas and then opened fire, witnesses said. Health official Mohammed Lasheen said two men
were killed by bullets. Fifteen other protesters were wounded,
he said.
The deaths of 74 people Wednesday night in a post-match
stadium riot in the Mediterranean city of Port Said fueled anger
at Egypt’s ruling military and the already widely distrusted
police forces. Many in the public and in the newly elected parliament blamed the leadership for letting it happen - whether
from a lack of control or, as some alleged, on purpose.
Survivors of the riot described a nightmarish scene in the
stadium. Police stood by doing nothing, they said, as fans of
the winning home team, Al-Masry, attacked supporters of the
top Cairo club, Al-Ahly, stabbing them and throwing them off
bleachers.
A narrow exit corridor turned into a death trap as crowds
of fans fled into it, only to be crushed against a locked gate as
their rivals attacked them from behind.
A network of zealous Al-Ahly soccer fans known as Ultras
vowed vengeance, accusing the police of intentionally letting
rivals attack them because they have been among the most
aggressive of Egypt’s revolutionaries. Ultras were at the forefront of the anti-government uprising - first against toppled
leader Hosni Mubarak a year ago and now against the military
that took his place in power.
“Either they will die or we will die,” one Ultra said, referring to the police, as he joined a march by some 10,000 people
on the Cairo headquarters of the Interior Ministry, which oversees the security forces. He would only give his first name,
Islam, for fear of reprisal by police.
The march turned into a call for the ruling military council
of generals, led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, to surrender power.
“Say it out loud, the council must leave!” the marchers
chanted, shouting to people in residential buildings along the
way. “Get down from your balconies, Tantawi killed your
children!”
The military has faced protests for months led by secular
and liberal youth groups demanding an end to its rule - and the
soccer riot added to criticism that the generals have mismanaged the transition from Mubarak’s rule. Opponents accuse the
generals of being as autocratic as the ousted president and of
preserving much of his regime. They say elements in the police
and former regime figures have been working behind the scenes
to undermine the revolution and prevent real change.
“We dreamed of change. They fooled us and brought us a
field marshal instead,” protesters chanted Thursday as they
reached the Interior Ministry, near Tahrir Square. Some called
for the execution of the military rulers. Many raised flags of
the Al-Ahly club and Zamalek, another top Cairo team with its
own group of Ultras.
The crowds approached the ministry from multiple sides.
Some tried to dismantle walls of large concrete blocks that had
been erected on streets leading to the ministry after November
clashes. Others tore away barbed wire barriers.
Protesters hurled stones at lines of riot police, who
responded with heavy barrages of tear gas that sent the crowd
scattering, some passing out and falling. Protesters set tires
on fire, sending up black smoke as motorcyclists ferried away
the injured. One young man who climbed atop a traffic light
waving a flag was unmoved even as he was engulfed in a cloud
of gas.
“We are just across the street from the ministry,” said one
protester, Taha Mahfouz, wearing a helmet and waving a club
that he had taken from riot police. “They can’t protect their
own stuff. How can they protect the country?”
(Continued on page B10)
Prosecutor-General Mahmoud Abdel-Meguid, second left, tours a stadium with other officials
the morning after deadly clashes occurred in Port Said, Egypt, Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012. Scores of
Egyptian soccer fans were crushed to death while others were fatally stabbed or suffocated after
being trapped in a long narrow corridor trying to flee rival fans armed with knives, clubs and
stones, in the country’s worst ever soccer violence that killed at least 74 people, witnesses and
health officials said Thursday. Head of sports committee in parliament, said that the parliament
holds the interior minister responsibility for the violence. He demanded ouster of the Prosecutor(AP Photo)

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -Someday, Tim Tebow hopes to be
playing in the Super Bowl rather
than just visiting. The Denver
Broncos quarterback made the
media rounds at the Super Bowl
on Thursday, talking about everything from what he needs to work
on before next season to his admiration for Eli Manning and Tom
Brady to his video game rivalry
with his brother.
“You play the game to be
in a game like this,” Tebow
said during a taping of “NBC

later Thursday. “It’s definitely a
dream to be in a game like this.”
Tebowmania swept the
country after Tebow led the
Broncos on five fourth-quarter

victories - each more improbable than the last. He spawned
a new verb, “Tebowing” - the

But a week after connecting
with Demaryius Thomas on an
80-yard touchdown on the first
play of overtime to beat heavily
favored Pittsburgh in the wildcard round, Tebow and the
Broncos were embarrassed by
the New England Patriots.
“That Tom Brady is really
good,” Tebow said when asked
what he learned from the game.
“And just to continue to work.
... If we get better and continue
to work, anything can happen.”
Tebow’s detractors have said
he’d be better suited to play running back in the NFL than quarterback, with an unorthodox
throwing motion. But Broncos
boss John Elway has already
declared Tebow the starter going
into next season’s training camp,
and the quarterback said he knows
where he needs to improve.
“Definitely my footwork and
drops,” he said. “Getting from
receiver to receiver, my progressions. I continue to try and
work on things and I was very
blessed to have a good quarterback coach in Mike McCoy.
But, ultimately, I’m just going
out there and playing football.”
Asked whether he’d prefer
to run or throw a pass if he had
only one play to win a game,
Tebow said he didn’t care.
“Probably the pass because
I can get one more player

“As long as we get a W, I don’t
care how it happens.”

➧ Bundchen…

Brady was discovered in
the sixth round of the 2000
NFL draft, Bundchen at age
14 in a Brazilian fashion mall.
They’re the kind of highwattage stars who keep the
paparazzi in business. Yet they
don’t have a reality TV show
and they don’t do the party
circuit, and she isn’t likely to
show up at Patriots games in a
form-fitting pink Brady jersey.
They’re almost - dare we
say it? - boring. He gave tiny
glimpses of his family life in
response to questions during
Super Bowl week interviews.
He’ll talk about his parents,
three older sisters, and his two
boys, one with an ex-girlfriend,
one with Bundchen. He’ll
mention a child’s chair with his
youngest son’s name on it on
the floor of his locker in Foxborough, Mass., and remarked
about his boys’ favorite TV
shows and athletic abilities.
But his wife? He seldom, if
ever, mentioned her.
And never by name.
Asked at Tuesday’s media
day if his wife had given him
any advice, he said: “Throw
the ball quickly. She doesn’t
like it when I get hit very
often. My guys up front do a
great job of protecting me.”
His wife, too. “I feel Tommy
really needs our prayer, our support and love at this time,” her
email said, according to the Post.
Stay tuned.

The Health Ministry said 388 protesters were injured, most
overcome by gas.
In an emergency session of parliament, several lawmakers
said the police failure to stop the rioting was intentional, aimed
at stoking insecurity since Mubarak’s ouster on Feb. 11, 2011.
The aim, they said, was to create instability to justify maintaining strict emergency laws.
“This is a complete crime,” said Abbas Mekhimar, head of
parliament’s defense committee. “This is part of the scenario
of fueling chaos against Egypt.”
Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri told parliament he had
dissolved the Egyptian Soccer Federation’s board and referred
its members for questioning by prosecutors about the violence.
He also said the governor of Port Said province and the area’s
police chief have resigned.
Tantawi told reporters Wednesday that the country’s transition will not be derailed by the violence.
“Egypt is going down the path we planned,” he said. “We
will continue down this path and we will get through this
transition.”
Security officials said 47 people were arrested in Port Said.
Ismail el-Iskandarani, a researcher with the private group
Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights who was in Port Said,
said 17 of the dead remain unidentified and at least three of
those killed were residents of Port Said, and not Al-Ahly
sports fans.
The soccer violence - the world’s deadliest in 15 years began when Al-Masry pulled out a surprise 3-1 victory over
Al-Ahly, Egypt’s most powerful club. Al-Masry fans stormed
the field, rushing past lines of police to attack Al-Ahly’s Ultras.
“I saw death with my own eyes. I saw people take their last
breath,” said Samir Saad, a 27-year old Al-Ahly fan who was
stabbed in the leg as he fled into the stands.
“The security opened the doors for Al-Masry fans and
closed (them) in our face.”
Others reported Al-Ahly fans being thrown from the stands
or jumping to escape. Some said Al-Masry supporters carved
the words “Port Said” into the bodies of stricken fans.
Authorities shut off the stadium lights, plunging it into darkness. In the exit corridor, the fleeing crowd pressed against a
chained gate until it broke open.
“Everyone was pushing. Under me were more than three
people and I am being pushed. Everyone is pushing trying to
breathe,” said Mahmoud Ibrahim, who was trapped in the corridor. He spoke at Cairo’s main morgue where many of the
dead were taken, including two of his friends.
There was bad blood between the two teams even before the
match, and many were itching for a fight. Early in the game,
Ultras raised a banner reading, “Port Said is a garbage city and
has no men,” before it was quickly taken down.
Ultras accused police of failing to do the usual searches for
weapons, and witnesses reported fans in the Al-Masry stands
had clubs and knives. El-Iskandarani, the rights worker investigating the violence, said witnesses reported that some of those
carrying knives were known locally as thugs-for-hire.
Pedro Barny, a Portuguese assistant to Al-Ahly coach
Manuel Jose, complained of a lack of security as the tensions
mounted during the game.
“The atmosphere was very aggressive. It was very intimidating for our team,” Barny told Radiotelevisao Portuguesa.
“There were opposition fans walking up and down unchallenged in front of our bench during the game and the police
did nothing.”
He said there was a charge across pitch toward the Al-Ahly
fans that collided with the players and coaches. “I ran and ran
to get away from it.”
He said he was punched and kicked as he sprinted for the
tunnel.
The Ultras are among Egypt’s rowdiest fans and are proud
of their hatred for the police, who were the backbone of
Mubarak’s authoritarian rule. During matches, they are known
for their obscenity-laced anti-police songs and chants, which
usually go viral on the Internet, an expression of the hatred
many Egyptians feel toward the security forces.
The network is highly organized across the country, but
they were long apolitical, resenting the police for friction at
soccer matches. When the uprising began, the Ultras used their
years of experience in clashing with police at stadiums to help
defend protesters against attacks by security forces and regime
supporters.
After Mubarak’s fall, they joined protests against the military, and in November and December, they fought back against
troops cracking down on demonstrations in clashes that left
dozens dead. Ironically, the revolution has united the Ultra
backers of the Al-Ahly and Zamalek clubs, the country’s most
bitter soccer rivalry.
Ahmad Saqqar, a 22-year-old Ultra wearing a red Al-Ahly
shirt, said the Ultras are “all about resisting police suppression.”
“The military plotted yesterday to take revenge on us,” he
said. “We know how to respond ... after we recover from our
wounds.”
Andrew Luck hoping to
play ‘right away’ in NFL
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) —
Andrew Luck is willing to learn
from Peyton Manning. He just
wants everyone to know he’s
ready to play next season, too.
The Stanford quarterback
said Thursday he could co-exist
as Manning’s teammate even
though his preference would be
to play immediately.
“I think every competitor
wants to play, every down,
every play,” Luck said when
asked about starting as an NFL
rookie. “So, of course, who
wouldn’t want to start?”
Luck spent less than 24 hours
in Indianapolis, going through
a battery of physical tests and
learning the intricacies of nutrition
at the Gatorade Sports Science
Institute. His next trip to the city,
for the annual scouting combine,
might determine whether Luck
becomes a permanent fixture.
Colts owner Jim Irsay has
already said he intends to take
Manning’s successor with the
No. 1 overall pick in April’s
draft, and it looks like a twoman race between Luck and
Heisman Trophy winner Robert
Griffin III. But there are big
questions surrounding the Colts.
Indy has embarked on a
major rebuilding project with
Ryan Grigson, a first-time
general manager, and Chuck
Pagano, a first-time coach.
There are even more concerns about Manning, who
missed the 2011 season after
having his third neck surgery
Sept. 8. The four-time league
MVP has resumed throwing
and has steadily increased his
workout regimen. On Tuesday,
Manning said doctors have told
him the recovery is on schedule,
and he does not plan to retire
after 14 seasons in the NFL.
Irsay said he will wait until
next month to decide whether
to pay its franchise quarterback
a $28 million roster bonus by
March 8, redo the contract or
risk losing him in free agency.
“We haven’t had any midnight conversations,” Irsay said
Thursday with a laugh. “Nothing
has changed, and we’re looking
forward to talking after the
Super Bowl and continuing to
work toward a solution.”
If Indy keeps Manning and
takes Luck, it would be the first
real quarterback controversy
since the pre-Manning days.
Manning’s father, Archie,
created a buzz late last year
when he told a radio show he
didn’t think the two could be
teammates. He later said what
he meant was that Luck and
Peyton Manning both were
good enough to start in 2012.
Luck understands. “I think
to have an opportunity to play
with a guy like Peyton Manning
would be great,” he said.
The rebuilding Colts are
hoping to replicate the model
that made Manning a star.
They opened the ‘98 season
with a new coach, a new GM,
a new quarterback and Bruce
Arians as quarterbacks coach.
After changing coaches and
GMs, the Colts hired Arians as
their new offensive coordinator.
The quarterbacks’ early
resumes also look similar.
Manning and Luck are both
second-generation
quarterbacks who finished second in
the Heisman balloting and were
regarded as the best QBs in
their draft class. The Lucks and
Mannings have family ties, too.
Andrew’s father, Oliver, and
Manning’s father were teammates in Houston for two seasons in the 1980s, and Luck has
been both a student and a counselor at the Manning’s summer
quarterback camp in Louisiana.
NFL approves $200 million
loan for new 49ers stadium
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — NFL owners approved a $200 million loan Thursday to help the San Francisco 49ers build a stadium south of Santa Clara. The team plans to bid for future Super
Bowls for the 68,000-seat stadium, which will be built adjacent
to the 49ers’ facility. “It’s huge,” 49ers CEO Jed York said of the
league’s approval. “We’ve been at this since 1997. We’ll have
shovels in the ground soon.”
Owners approved another part of the funding package two
months after the team and Santa Clara announced they’d received
an $850 million loan to cover most of the estimated $1 billion
cost. The rest of the cost will be covered by the league’s loan, a
hotel tax and Santa Clara’s redevelopment funds. “We will definitely be in by 2015,” York said, “with hopes of 2014.”
Asked about hosting a Super Bowl — the next one available
would be the 50th game in 2016 — York said, “This will definitely be a fitting setting for a Super Bowl game and we will bid.”
The 49ers have to address their current Candlestick Park lease
with the city of San Francisco that runs through 2014.
“Today’s vote is an important milestone for the 49ers and
their fans,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said. “It is a
solid endorsement that adds to the strong support of the South
Bay community. This step will allow the 49ers to move forward
toward making the dream of a new stadium a reality.”
San Francisco is the first franchise approved for funding under
the NFL’s G-4 loan policy initiated after the new collective bargaining agreement was reached last summer. It replaces a plan
that allowed a maximum of $150,000 per team in loans.
In fact, when Luck decided
to go back to college for his
junior season instead of turning
pro, Peyton Manning was one
of the people Luck called.
“It was more asking for
advice on how he handled certain situations. I had already
made the decision,” Luck said.
“He talked about, one, it’s not
going to get any easier. Quite
the contrary, teams are going
to be really gunning for you
and yada, yada, yada and don’t
expect it to be a cakewalk and
easy all the time. Then, No. 2,
just how to handle certain situations maybe with the media or
certain situations that rise up.”
Now the Colts must decide
whether to release Manning and
start over, keep Manning and
make the draft pick wait or let
Manning and his apparent heir
battle for the starting job.
“You never really replace
someone like that,” Luck said.
“He (Manning) is such an iconic
sports figure especially for this
city, this area. From what I understand, he’s done so many great
things outside of football and in
the community. I haven’t given
it too much thought. I’ve got the
combine, that’s what’s important
to me right now. The combine,
the draft, the pro day before that,
that’s what I’m focusing on.”

LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) — Kauai County has placed police
Chief Darryl Perry on leave while it investigates an employee
complaint. The county didn’t offer further details because the
situation involves a personnel matter, but Mayor Bernard P.
Carvalho, Jr. said statement Thursday that Perry and two assistant chiefs have been placed on leave because of an “employeegenerated complaint” to the police commission.
“In order to protect everyone involved in this matter, and to
insure that the complaint is investigated properly, certain actions
have been taken, including the placement on leave of the three
high-ranking police officials,” Carvalho said in the statement.
Deputy police Chief Michael Contrades has been appointed
acting police chief. The county announced the decision to place
Perry on leave late Wednesday — one day after announcing the
two assistant chiefs were also put on leave.
Perry told the Garden Island newspaper (http://bit.ly/zR3Wnr)
“the truth will come out.” Perry says he has “utmost trust” in the
decision making of his assistant chiefs — Roy Asher and Ale
Quibilan — and they are beyond reproach.
“About myself, my reputation speaks for itself. I’m about
transparency. I’m about honesty. I’m about doing the right thing.
I have not strayed from those values,” Perry said.
He hopes the truth will be explained once it comes out.
“I wanted to convey to the public that this administration has
always been about being truthful, about being honest and being
transparent, and so what has happened is difficult for myself as
well as for the assistant chiefs,” he said.
Perry became police chief in 2007. He replaced K.C. Lum,
who resigned after a tumultuous two-year tenure. Then-Mayor
Bryan Baptiste and the Kauai County Council pushed for Lum’s
removal amid claims he failed to properly manage the police
department and improve morale.
Perry, who grew up in Lihue, started his nearly four decadelong career in law enforcement as a Kauai police officer.
He later moved to Oahu and joined the Honolulu Police
Department. At HPD, Perry commanded the Juvenile Services,
Narcotics-Vice and Criminal Investigations units. He also
worked with the state attorney general’s office investigating
Internet crimes against children.
Occupy Honolulu
protesters pack
tents, belongings
HONOLULU (AP) — Occupy Honolulu protesters packed
up tents and other belongings on Thursday as city officials
enforce a ban on the storage of personal property in public
places. Demonstrators carried away their belongings from the
corner of Beretania and Ward streets one day after city officials
issued notices that crews would impound personal belongings
not removed in 24 hours. City officials moved in after 1 p.m.
to begin the cleanup of items left behind.
Protester Chris Smith told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser he
removed some personal items so they wouldn’t be confiscated.
But he said he has no plans to leave the park.
“I’m here to make a stand, not to play games with them,”
said Smith. He said he came to Hawaii in November to help
organize the protest movement here.
City crews on Wednesday issued 31 citations for property
at the site next to Thomas Square Park.
They acted under a new law that allows officials to remove
personal property stored in public areas. The city earlier this
year gave similar notices to dozens of homeless people living
on sidewalks and in parks.
The ordinance gives city officials the authority to tag property left in public for more a day. Property owners have 24
hours to remove the tagged items before they are impounded.
The bill’s sponsor, Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard, has said
the measure aims to keep public spaces safe and accessible. Residents have complained that tents and shopping carts on sidewalks
and in parks make it difficult for people to enjoy these areas.
Critics say the law unfairly targets Honolulu’s large homeless population. The measure was proposed before Occupy
protesters began demonstrating in November.

Lawmakers could accept
charitable event tickets
HONOLULU (AP) — A change to the state
Code of Ethics would allow legislators to accept
invitations and tickets to charitable events.
The House Judiciary Committee needs more
information to decide whether the change would
be appropriate.
Under the Hawaii Ethics Code, state lawmakers could not accept tickets worth more
than $25 or anything else that might be considered an attempt to influence the lawmaker.
Testimony at Thursday’s committee meeting
was largely in opposition to the measure. The
Ethics Commission, Attorney General’s office,
League of Women Voters and others urged
members to keep the ethics code intact.
But some lawmakers feel it’s important to
attend events for educational purposes or to
represent their constituents. The committee will
vote on the matter Feb. 9.
Hawaii bankruptcy filings
down for 11th month
HONOLULU (AP) — The number of people
filing for bankruptcy in Hawaii fell for the 11th
straight month in January. The Honolulu StarAdvertiser reported Thursday 212 bankruptcy
cases were filed in the state last month, down
13.5 percent from the same month a year ago.
By area, Hawaii County had the biggest
decline as filings there dropped nearly 40 percent to 24 filings last month. Filings fell 25 percent in both Kauai and Maui counties. In Honolulu, they slipped 1.4 percent.
The American Bankruptcy Institute says
bankruptcy cases declining nationally as consumers rein in their spending and reduce debt
built during the recent recession.
Study finds Honolulu
Marathon generated $107M
HONOLULU (AP) — The Honolulu Marathon brought in more than $100 million in revenue from visitors last December.
According to a study released by Hawaii
Pacific University on Thursday, the 39th Honolulu Marathon generated $107.6 million in
spending as well as $5 million in taxes.
University officials say this is the seventh
consecutive year that spending has surpassed
$100 million. The study was based on more
than 1,800 interviews with marathon participants, including numerous Japanese runners.
Professor Jerry Agrusa, who led the study,
says surveyors found Japanese visitors seemed
motivated by the Japan earthquake and tsunami
to spend more money and stay longer in Hawaii.
Participants from Japan spent about $345 per
day, a slight increase from 2010.
The annual Honolulu Marathon drew more
than 22,600 runners.
Legislature takes up
teacher evaluation issue
HONOLULU (AP) — The Department of
Education already has the authority to evaluate
its teachers, but the state Legislature might pass
a law to ensure it happens. Teacher evaluations
have been a sticking point for the Hawaii State
Teachers Association. The union rejected a tentative contract agreement that included performance measures in January.
The state already has the right to evaluate
educators. In fact, a pilot program is already
underway at 18 public schools. But the Legislature is considering a bill that would give the
DOE the directive, means and flexibility to
establish a performance management system
that identifies effective teachers.
Educator evaluations are required under
Race to the Top and delayed implementation
has put Hawaii’s $75 million grant at risk.
The House Education Committee will vote
on the bill Tuesday.

Whale caught head-to-tail
in fishing nets off Maui
HONOLULU (AP) — Federal officials are
trying to free a whale caught in fishing nets
off Hawaii. The Coast Guard said Thursday it
received a call from a charter boat reporting an
adult male humpback whale was entangled in
fishing nets from head to tail. The boat reported
that the whale was dragging two orange buoys
in the water off Maui.
A Coast Guard crew from Station Maui and
a National Oceanographic and Atmospheric
Administration marine mammal specialist headed
to the scene to evaluate and tag the whale.
The Coast Guard says the team is following
the whale in a 45-foot response boat.
Hawaii pseudoephedrine
purchases could be tracked
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii law already
requires all pseudoephedrine purchases to be
made at the pharmacy. The nonprescription
nasal decongestant, often called by the brand
name Sudafed, can be used as an ingredient in
crystal methamphetamine. That’s why pharmacies require identification for purchase.
Now, in addition to checking ID and keeping
a record of purchases, pharmacies may also
need to transmit the information to the National
Precursor Log Exchange. The exchange is
administered by the National Association of
Drug Diversion Investigators.
The exchange would provide pharmacists
with a stop sale alert if the identification check
indicates there is a problem with the purchase.
That House Health committee will hold a
public hearing on the matter Friday morning.
Hawaii County mayor leads
all rivals in fundraising
HILO, Hawaii (AP) — Hawaii County
Mayor Billy Kenoi raised more than $140,000
for his re-election campaign during the last six
months of 2011. The Hawaii Tribune-Herald
reported Thursday figures filed with the state
Campaign Spending Commission show the
campaign has raised nearly $330,000 since the
2010 election year, has no debt and a cash balance topping $150,000.
Hawaii County mayoral hopeful and County
Council Chairman Dominic Yagong raised
$500 between July 1 and Dec. 31, leaving a
campaign balance of $144.
Yagong acknowledged he hadn’t raised
much money for a campaign. He says he’d
never be able to compete financially with the
power of the incumbency. Instead he’s relying
on grass-roots support. Another mayoral candidate, Ann Marsh, only recently announced her
candidacy and didn’t file a report.
Hawaii law professor
honored by national group
HONOLULU (AP) — A national group is
honoring University of Hawaii law professor
Eric Yamamoto to recognize his devotion to the
struggle for justice and his mentorship of promising legal scholars.
The William S. Richardson School of Law
said Wednesday the Consortium of Asian
Pacific American Law professors created an
annual award in Yamamoto’s name.
The “Professor Eric Y. Yamamoto Emerging
Scholar Award” will be given to an early-career
law professor at a U.S. law school who demonstrates outstanding promise.
Yamamoto served as a member of the legal
team that, in 1984, successfully argued the
unconstitutionality of the government’s incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans during
World War II.
The case became the cornerstone for the
1988 Civil Liberties Act, which included a
presidential apology, reparations, and a public
education fund.

PROFESSIONAL CRITTERS By Daniel Wayman
Happy Birthday: Trust in your judgment
and follow the path best suited to your needs. You
instinctively know what needs to be done to reach
your goals. Progressive action will bring positive
results. Don’t worry about what others think; it’s
what matters to you that counts. Live life your way
and have no regrets. Your numbers are 7, 12, 21,
24, 27, 30, 42.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Careful how you
treat others. You will end up getting what you dish
out if you are too critical. It may be difficult, but you
are best to do a great job with as little complaining
as possible. Personal change will be enlightening.
✸✸✸✸
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Apply what you discover to a project you are working on. A service you
can offer will reach a new outlet if you find a way to
adjust your program to people in higher positions.
Shoot for the stars. Romance is highlighted. ✸✸✸
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Expand your interests and share your thoughts with people you feel
can benefit from what you have to say. Interaction
will be your best means to develop and propagate
what you feel passionate about. Put your heart and
soul into your work. ✸✸✸
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Dealing with people
in high places will bring you additional benefits. A
chance to work with young and old will open up a
new platform for what you have to offer. Control
your financial situation, rather than letting it control
you. ✸✸✸
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Show off your skills,
offer your services and befriend those who have
something to offer in return. Give-and-take will turn
into a prosperous venture with someone striving to
reach similar goals. Make personal and emotional
improvements. ✸✸✸✸
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Kick back and enjoy
getting together with people who share your interests. Avoid anyone playing emotional mind games
with you. Do your best work and walk away from
anyone who belittles your efforts or tries to affect
your productivity. ✸✸✸
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Take on any challenge that comes your way with confidence. You
have what it takes to dazzle onlookers and attract
interest, both personally and professionally. Selfimprovement projects will bring stellar results.
✸✸✸✸✸
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Choose your battles wisely. Not everyone will see things your way.
Don’t let anger stand in the way of resolution. Honesty and integrity will be the issue at the end of the
day. Call it as you see it and move on. ✸✸✸
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Judge your
situation carefully before you make your move. Not
everyone will buy into your way of thinking or the
changes you want to make. An emotional situation
can lead to a change in lifestyle or living arrangements. ✸✸✸
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Expand your
interests and your circle of friends. The more you
diversify, the greater your opportunities will be. Balance and equality will be key to making a relationship work. Practicality plus innovation spells success. ✸✸✸
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): You can stabilize your personal life by making some positive
changes in the way you handle your money and
interests. Don’t let a personal relationship with
someone overshadow what you feel is the right
thing to do. ✸✸✸✸✸
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Show your true
colors. Being honest about what you want may not
please everyone, but it will help you move forward
with your plans. Being sneaky to avoid an inevitable
confrontation will add to your stress and make matters worse. ✸✸
Birthday Baby: You are intuitive, original and
a trendsetter. You have charisma and charm.

BRIDE WANTS TO KEEP FRIEND’S LECHEROUS HUSBAND OFF GUEST LIST
DEAR ABBY: Over the years I’ve stayed in
touch with my childhood best friend, “Claire.” We
talk a few times a year and I attended her wedding
10 years ago.
In the intervening years, her husband, “Kirk,”
has cheated on her multiple times and was once
arrested by an undercover cop when he tried to
meet a 14-year-old for a sexual liaison. Despite
it all, Claire has chosen to stay with him. I have
made peace with the fact that it is her decision
and, because she lives in another state, it hasn’t
affected my life in any practical way -- until now.
I am being married next year, and Claire has
expressed excitement at attending my wedding.
I’d like to invite her, but not Kirk. I think he would
be too much of a distraction for me. There will be
enough people keeping an eye on the kids, but I
know if I see him talking to my niece or nephew,
it will make me extremely uncomfortable. God
forbid, if he did something inappropriate, it would
end my friendship with Claire.
Am I worrying too much? I don’t want to hurt
my friend, but I also don’t want to put any child in
harm’s way or have my memory of the day marred
with scanning the crowd to make sure Kirk isn’t
doing anything suspect. Your opinion would be
helpful. -- APPREHENSIVE BRIDE-TO-BE
DEAR APPREHENSIVE: You need to be up
front and sort this out with Claire before issuing an
invitation. It is possible that her husband is legally
enjoined from having contact with minors and could
not attend your wedding even if invited. If you prefer
that he not attend, you need to have the courage to
say so. It probably won’t be the first time she has
heard it. But safety of the young people, not to men-
tion your peace of mind, must come first.

DEAR ABBY: A few months ago I joined a
small church. It had a sign-up sheet for people to
bring food to an event. The information requested
included my name and email address. The person
in charge of the church email added me to the
announcements list, and sent every email as a cc
instead of a blind copy. Now people I never gave
my email address to (and would not have given it to)
are replying “all,” sending messages to everyone
and emailing me directly. It bothers me that they
do this. I’m not sure how to approach them about
this problem. I guess the rest don’t have issues
with it, but I do. -- E-PEEVED IN OKLAHOMA
DEAR E-PEEVED: You have two choices: Go
through the hassle of changing your email address
and notifying your friends and family -- or simply
hit “delete” when one of those emails pops up. I
vote for the latter. As you stated, it’s a small church.

DEAR ABBY: I have been in a relationship with
“Danny” for two years. He’s smart, charming and
funny. However, after we argue I’m always the one
to start talking to try to come to a solution or a
compromise. Danny never takes the initiative. I
think he has a problem communicating with me
about his feelings. What should I do? -- TALKER
IN PORTLAND, MAINE
DEAR TALKER: If after two years your boyfriend is unwilling or unable to resolve disagreements in an adult fashion, you should suggest
couples counseling. It could avert serious problems in the future if you decide to invest more time
in this relationship.

In this Jan. 1, 2012, file photo, Indianapolis Colts quarterback
Peyton Manning watches from the sideline during the first half of
an NFL football game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Jacksonville, Fla. Shortly after introducing Chuck Pagano as Indianapolis’ new coach, team owner Jim Irsay responded to the comments
Manning made earlier this week about the Colts by referring to
(AP Photo/File)
the only four-time league MVP as a “politician.”
Peyton Manning’s doctor
gives a green flag to play
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -Peyton Manning has received
the OK from his surgeon to
start taking hits again.
A spokesman for Dr. Robert
Watkins said in a one-paragraph email sent late Thursday
night that the Colts’ star was
cleared to play.
ESPN, citing unidentified
sources, first reported Manning
had been cleared.
The Colts contend that is
nothing new because Manning was cleared to practice in
December, a move that would
have also allowed the quarterback to start playing again. But
it backs up Manning’s contention from earlier this week that
his recovery from September
neck surgery is on schedule.
“Peyton Manning underwent a thorough medical reevaluation as part of a postoperative visit with his surgeon,”
Watkins’ statement read. “As
a result of this examination,
Manning is medically cleared
to play professional football.”
Colts owner Jim Irsay
responded in a tweet: “Peyton
has not passed our physical nor
has he been cleared to play for
The Indianapolis Colts.”
Irsay said a team statement
was coming later Friday.
The four-time league MVP
missed the entire 2011 season
after having his third neck surgery in 19 months, a fusion of
two vertebrae. There have been
concerns that the injury might
end Manning’s 14-year NFL
career.
However, Manning has
sounded increasingly confident
about his recovery and told
reporters earlier this week that
he was not planning to retire.
He’s been throwing at least
two months, including a session Tuesday with several of
his teammates.
Even if Manning can take
the hits, there is no guarantee
he will remain in Indy.
The Colts owe Manning a
$28 million roster bonus on
March 8. If they don’t pay it,
they could risk losing him in
free agency.
There have been growing
indications that the Colts may
be ready to part with their
longtime franchise player.
New general manager Ryan
Grigson said Thursday the
team must put aside the sentimental reasons for keeping
Manning and make a decision
based on what’s best for the
team. Team owner Jim Irsay is
expected to make that call.
“You can’t do things to
where you are going to hurt
the whole franchise with other
decisions that you know might
hurt at the moment, but in the
end they help the sum of the
parts,” Grison said.
“It is a tough deal in this
business, and it happens at
every position, it happens
with coaching, it happens with
people in personnel and it is
completely part of the process
and the business.”
Irsay and Manning are
scheduled to meet again next
week. Irsay told reporters
earlier Thursday that he had
nothing new to report.
That would be a welcome
respite in Indy after four chaotic weeks.
Last month, the Colts fired
vice chairman Bill Polian,
general manager Chris Polian,
coach Jim Caldwell and most
of Caldwell’s assistants. The
flurry of moves prompted
Manning to go public with
his complaints, which drew a
strong rebuke from Irsay.
The two appeared to mend
fences Friday.
And the Manning story has
continually upstaged Indianapolis’ first Super Bowl week.
Thursday was no exception. With speculation swirling
about Manning’s future, his
presumed successor - Stanford
quarterback Andrew Luck,
expected to be taken by the
Colts with the No. 1 pick came to town and told reporters
he wants to start immediately.
A few hours later, Grigson
acknowledged that he met with
Manning for 20 minutes last
week, calling it a straightforward conversation between
two regular guys. New coach
Chuck Pagano said he also
spoke with Manning last week.
Nobody provided details of the
conversation, though.
“We’re in a holding pattern in that respect,” he said
when asked if the uncertainty
would prevent the Colts from
doing business with their soonto-be free agents. “Until it is
(resolved), we’re going to go
about our business as usual.”
Before the night ended,
Watkins joined the chorus by
confirming that Manning was
healthy enough to play.
