THRIVING IN THE GARDEN
Green fingers have been working hard. Niamh from Thrive paid a visit to Guildford
groups recently and earlier Thrive called on Knaphill. Here is the afternoon group at
work. We had two quizzes, the first challenging us to identify herbs from look and
smell and the second identifying herbs from a list and a definition. The final activity
was re-potting herbs one might buy in a supermarket to make them last longer. As you can see, a good time was had by all.

that uses cartoons and drawings as
a huge amount of fun and everyone
a teaching aid. He demonstrated

CHRISTMAS ARTISTS WORKING HARD
AT GUILDFORD AFTERNOON GROUP
The afternoon session at Guildford in December had everyone busy producing Christmas
cards. Whether it was drawing, cutting and pasting everyone displayed a remarkable
degree of talent. Grace and Janet J each produced a batch of cards. When someone
commented how talented Grace was Grace replied that she had learned all of it from other
people at TALK. Janet C drew a marvellous pencil copy of a Christmas card with her left
hand. She is not naturally left-handed. Erika produced a card representing the mountains
of the area where she grew up in Germany. Gary made one card that he specifically
dedicated to his Mum. Everyone had a lot of fun and a surprising amount of talent.

FRANK DOES IT AGAIN
The hirsute Frank Cuddy of Knaphill has been at it again. This year he has
grown a beard and moustache for Movember to raise money for TALK and
has raised £154.00 for us. Last year he raised £110 by doing the same thing
last year. The bigger beard the more he raises!

A WALK IN THE SURREY COUNTRYSIDE
Carol from Walton took members of Guildford afternoon group on an imaginary
walk around Surrey. First we discussed the things we might need to take on a walk
and then looked at some of the things that we might see; the different types of signs,
obstacles, plants, birds, flowers and animals and evidence of old industries that are
to be found. Carol also provided us with quizzes to do and puzzles for us to solve. All in all it was a fun afternoon. Many thanks Carol.

A WIZARD PANTO TIME
All the favourite characters of the Wizard of Oz appeared at Guildford morning
group just before Christmas, thanks to some innovative thinking and inspired
stage direction. We even had our own Toto, thanks to Dorothy [Ros] bringing
along her guide dog Tex. Being something of a shoe collector Ros was only too
happy to take the role of Dorothy and don the red shoes.

WORDPLAY AT WALTON
Walton had a session on Guy Fawkes and at the end they had the
opportunity to write Acrostic Poems which I thought were amazing- they
obviously had some help from the volunteers, and some suggestions of
words, but I was delighted by what they produced. Sian

THE ANTIQUES ROAD
SHOW COMES TO OUR
GUILDFORD GROUPS
Our session on 19th January was entitled ‘The Antiques Road Show’. Christopher Hawkings, a retired auctioneer, and his wife came along with a
weird and wonderful collection of Victorian items for us to identify. There was
much scratching of heads as we tried to identify the items. Some were quite
easy but others were very difficult to identify. Items included such things as
glove stretchers, a hook for pulling on riding boots, a pipe rest, a vesta [match]
case and perhaps strangest of all, a Victorian apple machine that peeled an
apple in a matter of seconds. This one really stumped us! All in all it was a
fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

KNAPHILL MINDMAPPING
Mark Shakespeare, the art therapist, visited Knaphill TALK in January and led
a session that was much enjoyed by everyone. Everyone explored their likes
by doing some ‘mind-mapping’ and then made individual collages, cutting out
pictures which represented what they liked.

ASHFORD CHRISTMAS LUNCH
These photos were taken at our Christmas lunch held at the Egham Bowls
Club on 16 December, when volunteers and recoverers included family
members as guests. The event was a great success and we enjoyed
wonderful hospitality and service from the Bowls Club who served a
delicious Christmas meal.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS AT ASHFORD
KNAPHILL CHRISTMAS SESSION
The Ashford Group sang
Christmas carols around the
piano followed by a raffle
with the main prize, a hamper,
donated by Tesco and won by
Goddie Godhino, one of our
recoverers.
At our Christmas session volunteer Daisy Mann organised and ran a raffle
that raised £57.00 for TALK. Daisy does this every Christmas and it is enjoyed
by everyone. All manage to win a prize. Also at the session recoverers and
volunteers made gift tags for Christmas, enjoyed a seasonal quiz and sang
“The Twelve Days of Christmas”.

TALK Fundraising
THANK YOU, EAGLE RADIO
TALK was the lucky recipient of a £1000 grant from Eagle Radio Trust in
February, when the Trust celebrated its 20th anniversary. The celebrations
were made even more noteworthy because the trust doubled the initial amount
awarded when it came to the presentation. Pictured receiving the cheque
[centre] are TALK fundraiser and marketing coordinator Jo Matthews and
Chairman Richard Moule, flanked by breakfast radio presenters Peter Gordon
and Bev. The money will be used to provide more art therapy for our groups.
