Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard
2011 annual report
building communi ty food security
message from the director
At Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard we believe everyone should have access
to healthy, nutritious food. Our
food pantry, garden and nutrition programs work together to
meet emergency food needs and
to provide opportunities to build
self-reliance. At the heart of all
we do is the desire to create a sense
of community and a respectful, welcoming space. You can see this wonderful
community in action 5 days a week in our food
pantry, in our 3 community gardens and in the
40 garden and nutrition classes held throughout
the year.
Food security is a real problem in our community, affecting many of our neighbors. In
Monroe County over 20,000 people
are at risk of hunger, including 4,760
children. We see this growing need
everyday in our 1000 sqft food pantry, where we distributed over 1
million pounds of food (for the
second year in a row), providing
over 100,000 bags of groceries.
Thanks to strong partnerships with
the Hoosier Hills Food Bank, City
of Bloomington Parks and Recreation
Department, Perry Township Trustee, area
growers, community groups, volunteers, and
donors, we are able to keep up with the significant increase in demand for our programs. We
are grateful for the caring community of supporters making the work of The Hub possible,
and we look forward to working together in the
next year to ensure access to good, nutritious
food.

Mission
our values
Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard exists to provide
healthful, wholesome food to people in need,
as well as nutrition and gardening education.
MHC offers services in ways that build community while enhancing the dignity, respect,
and self-care of all involved.
Health: Provide healthy, whole food, organic
when possible, as well as opportunities to learn
about nutrition, wellness & gardening.
Accessibility: Be a user-friendly resource that
is open to all people and operates on the honor
system.
Empowerment: Allow all clients to choose their
own food. Encourage clients to become an
active part of Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard by
volunteering.
Vision
Respect: Create a positive atmosphere of support and safety for our patrons, volunteers and
staff. Honor people’s choices and differences.
Balance: Encourage patrons to only take what
resources they need and will use, and encourage volunteers, staff and donors to give only
what they can give while serving their own
health and integrity.
Environmental Responsibility: Reduce, reuse,
recycle and compost whenever possible; practice stewardship at our gardens.

We envision a community in which everyone
has equal access to nutritious food, waste is
minimized, and all members are healthy, selfsufficient, and empowered to reach their full
potential.
4
Community: Work with other social service
agencies to establish partnerships, refer clients,
and create an atmosphere of goodwill and trust.
Who we serve
Each year we see more families seeking assistance through our food pantry program.
2011 saw 3,852 new patrons, and thirty percent
of the total served were children. Over eighty
percent reported being uninsured, disabled or
facing high medical costs. Nearly half of our
patrons are employed, yet still living well below the poverty line and facing food insecurity.

Food Pantry Highlights
Each day, volunteers contribute a total of
37 hours--loading and unloading all
the food, stocking the shelves and
helping patrons to feel welcome
in the pantry. We’ve implemented a new training program for
pantry volunteers, and made the
volunteer sign-in process totally
electronic. A bountiful harvest of
fresh, local produce graced the pantry
shelves May through November, thanks to
our own Hub gardens, and generous donations
from farmers and home gardeners.

Our food pantry is open 5 days a week,
and each day we see new and familiar
faces through our doors, seeking
food assistance for their families.
An average day in the food pantry sees one to three tons of food
redistributed to approximately
150 households in a two-hour period of time, resulting in 1,037,966
pounds of food going to people in
need in 2011. This year brought a new record of 205 households served in a single day.
Over 100 volunteers donate their time each
week to support our food pantry program.

Garden Program Highlights
The MHC Community Garden program
flourished in 2011. Over 400 volunteers helped raise more than 3,500
pounds of produce--bringing our
total for the 11 years of the garden
program to over 15,000 pounds
of fresh food! The Hub gardened
more space than ever with the addition of a hoop house and garden
plot in the newly established Butler
Park Community Gardens. The garden
at Crestmont has been turned over entirely to
the care of MHC, which increased our growing
power and made the space available and inviting to the surrounding community.
We were thrilled to again share the harvest
with Crestmont neighbors using our
bike cart, and saw many new faces
working and harvesting from our
expanded Crestmont plots. Youth
gardeners at Banneker and Crestmont learned more about where
their food comes from through
direct contact with the gardens.
Our themed gardens at Crestmont included a corn maze, a pizza garden, and
a salsa garden. Kids made the garden-to-table
connection with baked squash, salsa, salads and
other garden-fresh delicacies.

Nutrition program Highlights
I’ve always dreamed of learning how to make jams and bread from scratch and Mother Hubbard has just been a blessing in my life. We are so fortunate to have access to your nutrition programs and again, I just wanted to express my gratitude. Taking these workshops has
changed my life and my relationship to food.
--MHC nutrition workshop participant
2011 was the Hub’s first full year with a
designated nutrition education coordinator. We expanded our list of
cooking-from-scratch workshops
to include more bread baking
opportunities, additional canning demonstrations and even a
pie making class. The year saw a
26% increase in pregnant or nursing women seeking food assistance.
New classes on baby food making,
toddler meals & snacks and crock pot cooking targeted families with young children, including Head Start and Early Head Start parents
and children. We offered twenty-one nutrition
kayte
8
workshops and presented pantry patrons with
43 tables of tasty samples of nutritious,
low-cost recipes, featuring whole
food ingredients found on our
pantry shelves. Volunteers, staff
and nutrition interns got creative
with items such as canned corn,
curly kale, rolled oats, Swiss
Chard, Greek yogurt and butternut squash--introducing patrons to
new flavors and techniques, or updating familiar favorites. We’re offering more
on-site cooking demonstrations, meeting folks
where they are, and engaging in lively discussions about healthy and delicious food choices.

2011 Grants summary
A wide variety of local and national
grants helped Mother Hubbard’s
Cupboard expand our programs’
capacity and provide critical infrastructure to the organization.
The Jack Hopkins Social Service Fund assisted with Mother
Hubbard’s Cupboard’s purchase
a cargo van for our Garden and
Nutrition Programs. The vehicle
has greatly improved efficiency and
increased the capacity of both programs. The
children in our gardening youth program enjoyed working in our gardens with child-size
tools purchased with funds from the Monroe
County Master Gardener Association. A
grant from the Monroe County Council aided our expansion of nutrition
outreach to pregnant and nursing
mothers, families with small children, and people with illnesses or
disabilities. The South Central Indiana REMC’s Operation RoundUp program helped to keep our
pantry shelves stocked throughout the
year with funding for food purchases. The
Evangelical Lutheran Church of America also
helped to supply fresh, healthy food to people in
need with a grant from their Domestic Hunger
Program.
