Treasures in Our Own Backyard
Tourist season is upon us. But while you
might see an increase in traffic and crowds this
summer – and a decrease in parking – take a
moment to reflect on the fact that eastern CT
is a major tourism and economic hub in New
England.
More visitors than ever are anticipated to
visit our region this year, following an estimated
12 percent rise in tourism between 2014 and
2015, according to the Connecticut Office of
Tourism (CTVisit.com). Perhaps visitors come to
Connecticut to soak in its beautiful beaches, or
to absorb its history, or to experience its state
and local parks, world-class entertainment
facilities and museums, quaint downtowns
lined with shops, or its delicious, fresh food.
No matter the reason, it’s clear that our region
has plenty to offer. Become a ‘local tourist’ and
fall in love with our region and its attractions.
For the history buff, eastern CT is truly awash
in cultural treasures. Reacquaint yourself
with our mighty submarine fleet’s history at
the Submarine Force Library & Museum in
Groton. Learn about the indigenous cultures
of our region at the Mashantucket Pequot
Museum & Research Center in Mashantucket.
Walk in the childhood footsteps of Eugene
O’Neill, America’s only Nobel Prize-winning
playwright, at the Monte Cristo Cottage in
New London.
Looking for something for the kids? Ignite
their imagination with a trip to the Children’s
Museum of Southeastern CT in Niantic or
let them roam with the dinosaurs at the
Dinosaur Place in Montville. Rainy day?
No problem. Kids Quest & Cyber Quest at
Mohegan Sun has enough activities to keep
the young ones occupied for hours while you
enjoy the casino’s sights and offerings. The
popular Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center
is nearby, as is Mystic Aquarium, whose 27
acres of marine-related exhibits delight kids
of all ages.
Nautical enthusiasts unite! Eastern CT has
a generous offering of waterborne activities.
Learn about New London’s turbulent
relationship with the Thames River and Long
Island Sound at the New London Maritime
Society/Custom House Maritime Museum.
Get an up close and personal encounter with
eastern CT’s oceangoing history at Mystic
Seaport in Mystic, then spend a day on the
water aboard the Black Hawk II Party Boat,
Carolyn Ann Sportfishing, or the Mijoy 747.
Cap off the day with a visit to Ocean Beach
Park in New London with its scenic beach and
refreshing Port ‘N’ Starboard waterside bar.
If you’re looking for something off the
beaten path, get your blood pumping with an

Dig into eastern CT’s culture with a visit at
one of our many nearby art museums. The
Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London,
the Slater Memorial Museum in Norwich, the
Mystic Museum of Art in downtown Mystic,
and the Florence Griswold Museum and Lyme
Art Academy, both in Old Lyme, offer limited
and permanent exhibits that engage your
senses. Cap your evening with a live theatrical
performance at the Eugene O’Neill Theater
Center in Waterford, the Chestnut Street
Playhouse in Norwich, the Flock Theatre
in New London, or the Katharine Hepburn
Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook. The
Garde Arts Center in New London frequently
hosts live performances, movies, guest
speakers, dance companies, and more in its
opulent restored 1920s auditorium.
For every age and taste, eastern CT
has it all. Take some time this summer to
appreciate for yourself the many reasons
thousands of guests visit our region every
year. Search our online member directory at

offerings in our own backyard.

Your Pipeline to Success
Leadership Program Completes
Civic Engagement Project
Participants of the Leadership ECT
Program Class of 2017 recently completed
their community service project for the
New London Homeless Hospitality Center.
Regarded as a capstone of the Leadership
program, participants selected the project
from amid a number of local proposals,
then fundraised, planned, and executed a
complete revival of the Center’s outdoor
space over an eight-month period. Their
work included new furniture, lighting,
fencing, painting, landscaping and a variety
of planters to create a more peaceful setting
for people experiencing homelessness.
29 business and community leaders
participated. Executive Director Cathy
Zall said of the project, “I know that the
practical things we do to help guests make
a difference. But I also think the way the
shelter looks sends a message to guests,
visitors, staff and volunteers. A beautiful
site says that we value those we serve...
that life is full of beauty and possibility.” For
