Managing Toddler’s Anger and Upsets
Page 3
by Shari Steelsmith
Tip—Distinguishing between emotional upsets and manipulative power plays will help you decide how to respond to toddlers’
tantrums.
Many parents use words like ―tantrum,‖ ―melt-down,‖ ―falls apart,‖ or ―hits the wall‖ to describe their
toddlers‘ behavior when they are angry or upset. Pediatric nurse Helen Neville, author of Is This a
Phase? Child Development Parent Strategies, Birth to 6 Years, describes the behavior: toddlers typically drop to the floor where they may cry, scream, or kick. They may bang their heads or bite. Preschoolers may cry, kick, scream, or throw things. It is, in short, a clear loss of self-control.
How you respond to your child at these times depends in part on what is motivating the behavior.
Neville advises parents to distinguish between two kinds of upsets. The first kind happens when children are overwhelmed. They might be hungry, tired, or undone by too much excitement, too many
changes, or a world that is too confusing. Children may be frightened or frustrated as well.
MANAGING TODDLER'S ANGER AND UPSETS
The second type of tantrum behavior is more of an emotional power play to get a parent to back down. Children, especially two year olds,
often demand things that are not possible, not appropriate, or not reasonable. When the answer is No, they often resort to tantrum behavior
to persuade you to give in.
Tools—Neville offers some very practical ideas on how to respond to tantrum behavior in young children.
Let toddlers cry. Tantrum behavior releases tension from the body. Toddlers will stop when their bodies are able to relax—the time varies.
Most four and five year olds will cry from 5 to 15 minutes. Note how long your child usually cries.
For overwhelmed, emotional outbursts, Neville says to offer patient help and compromise. Let the child stay near you (as opposed to using
Time-out). Some children calm more quickly when held; others do better if we just sit nearby and wait. She suggests observing which factors contributed to the meltdown (hunger? fatigue?) and then plan to avoid the next one by bringing food, going home sooner, allowing more
time, or whatever makes sense for the situation.
For emotional power plays, hold the line with a firm and kind tone of voice. Ignore her complaints, pick up your child and simply proceed
with whatever you need to do next—get in the car, put on a coat, or go to bed. Your child will eventually learn that manipulative tantrums do
not work.
When toddlers are ready for contact, offer a hug and sympathy. ―It is hard when you can‘t do the things you want to do.‖
Whatever the situation, parents always have more success in calming their children when they remain calm themselves. It only prolongs the
upset if the responding adult has a tantrum of his or her own as well.
You‘ll find more practical tips you can use right now in Is This a Phase? Child Development & Parent Strategies, Birth to 6 Years by Helen
F. Neville, B.S., R.N.

Creating a Safety Plan for The New Year
Page 5
by Kim Estes
A new year approaches. It is historically a time of organizing and planning ahead. It is also a perfect time for putting into action (or reviewing), a simple safety plan for your family. It is easier than you think!
WHAT’S IMPORTANT
Create a list of the important concerns you have for your family. Consider both current concerns (My child is
not good about checking in with a safe grown up) and also future concerns (my child will be taking the school
bus in the fall). Begin addressing the current concerns and start a plan of action for future concerns. Start planning and practicing how you want to approach them with your child. Our motto is ―Be prepared, not scared‖ and
never use scare tactics when talking about safety with your child.
NEW HABBITS
If you have not started talking to your child about safety on a regular basis, now is the time to start. Make reminders
on your calendar if you need to. Help get yourself into a new habit of safety. Take time to ―de-brief‖ with your family. Share the ―favorite
part / least favorite part‖ of your day. You can do this at dinner time, bed time or in the car. Just find a few minutes each day. This will help
to create a place for your child to be able to comfortably talk to you about what is happening in their day (and sharing your day too)! Kids
don‘t necessarily bring their problems to you in a nice tidy package. It can take months or weeks to divulge little bits and pieces to you, especially if something is bothering them. Often testing to see how you will react. So don‘t freak out if they say something that catches you off
guard.
WHO’S WHO?
Review the safety rules your family already has in place. If you have school age children, talk to them about who the ―approved‖ grown ups
are to pick them up from school. For younger kids, practice cell phone numbers and who they can turn to if they need help (safe mom –or
dad) with kids.
Make safety a part of your new year and remember to make it fun too. Books are a great way to talk about safety with your child. We have
great age appropriate book recommendations on safety. Just go to our website to find out more about our great books, tips and conversation starters to get you on your way to creating a safety plan in the
new year!
