$3.5 million lodge for trail
A $3.5 million 80-bed lodge is being built in
Pureora Forest Park for the growing number
of cyclists and walkers using the Timber Trail
each year.
The Timber Trail Lodge is being built by
a group of mainly King Country investors at
Piropiro Flats, the 84km trail’s midway point.
Construction is due to begin next month.
Project manager Bruce Maunsell of Te Kuiti
says the first stage, including the lodge hub and
10 rooms for up to 25 guests will open during
summer 2016-17.
The Timber Trail – part of the New Zealand
Cycleway (Te Haerenga) – is a two-day mountain
bike ride attracting more than 8000 riders a year.
The trail opened in 2013, at a cost of $5 million.
It includes several specially built pedestrian
and cycle swing bridges spanning spectacular
gorges, including New Zealand’s longest – Maramataha Suspension Bridge – at 141m.
“Excellent interpretive signage provided by
the Department of Conservation (DOC) enables
users to learn about the natural and human history of the area while they travel along the trail,”
says Mr Maunsell.
“Further development of the trail and the vital
economic benefits it offers to the North King
Country has been constrained due to a lack of
accommodation.”
Cycling advocate and co-author of Classic New
Zealand Mountain Bike Rides Jonathan Kennett is
an enthusiastic supporter of the project.
“This lodge is just what the Timber Trail
needs to take it from good to great among New
Zealand’s best cycleways,” he says.
Mr Maunsell says as well as providing accommodation for the growing numbers of New
Zealanders visiting the trail, the lodge fits well
with the burgeoning cycle tourism sector.
“It will provide attractive options for higher
value international visitors and help to grow
the New Zealand tourism industry towards its
Tourism 2025 objectives.”
ECONOMIC GROWTH
He says the lodge will also enable economic
development of the region through creation and
expansion of support businesses, other enterprises and employment.
Set to employ up to six staff during peak
periods the lodge will also work closely with
transport operators and tour companies.
Mr Maunsell says construction and sub-
contracted services will be carried out by King
Country businesses and the developers have
worked closely with DOC to ensure it meets strict
environmental requirements.
FOREST HISTORY
Pureora Forest Park is a 78,000ha area of
protected forest that includes some of the largest
most outstanding tracts of NZ podocarp forest.
Anti-logging protests in the 1970s ended native forest logging and the permanent preservation of the remaining forest.
The area is home to endangered bird species
including kokako, whio (blue duck), kaka, kakariki and North Island robin.
The area is also rich in Maori history with Mt
Pureora being of particular significance to the
Rereahu iwi.
The Timber Trail mostly runs through DOC
land from Pureora to Ongarure
It is a Grade 3 trail making it suitable for moderately experienced and capable riders.

Funding boost for club
FROM books for children to gift baskets for
women’s refuge, the Altrusa International Club
of Te Kuiti is no stranger to supporting the community.
And last week they received a financial boost
to aid their efforts.
The group received $3000 from King Country
Boxing Club trainer Glenn Brightwell from this
year’s Battle of the Towns boxing challenge.
Altrusa president Elaine Duder says the club
greatly appreciates the funds which will go towards supporting a variety of community projects
with a particular focus this year on the Waitomo
Waipa Woman’s Refuge.
Secretary Trish Neal says Altrusa mainly focuses on literacy in schools, but after they had
a guest speaker from woman’s refuge visit them
last year the group asked themselves ‘how can
we help?’
“When the women leave and go to the refuge
they leave with nothing so we wanted to provide
them with some personal items that they can have
to call their own,” she says.
“We gave them some last year which ran out
very quickly so we’ve done up a whole lot more

FLAG DEBATE
The campaign came about as New Zealanders
debated the pros and cons of a new national flag,
and was the brainchild of OBA member Eric Tait.
Every participating business ‘flew’ a kiwianastyle silver fern flag in their front window and
held a sale or promotion which rewarded ‘republicans’ with discounts.
“It was a marvellous way of helping the people
in our community feel good about their community,” says OBA member Peter Burton.
‘Republican president’ (mayor) Max Baxter,
who raised the new flag in an opening ceremony
watched by 100 people on the Village Green on
March 14 says the campaign was successful on
two fronts.
“We achieved positive national television news
coverage for doing our own thing at a time when
the rest of New Zealand was going through the
flag referendum,” says Mr Baxter.
“The promotion also attracted many people
from surrounding towns who wanted to see
what was happening in our republic and to score
some bargains.”
Mrs Christison says a video on OBA’s Facebook page of resident Sidney Roberts singing the
republic’s anthem written by local Nicki Raffills
achieved 13,283 hits.
She hopes the anthem, written to the tune of

Vandalism costs escalate for WDC
THE rising cost of vandalism in the Waitomo
district has now gone beyond the cost of repairs.
Centennial Park sports field was torn up by
“hoons” during ANZAC weekend and, the damage is such that winter sport games there have
had to be relocated.
This latest act of vandalism has put the park
out of action for up to six weeks.
North King Country Junior Football Club
committee member and co-groundskeeper Oliver Mitchell says the damage is the worst he’s
ever seen.
“This has happened at the very beginning of
the soccer season after we had just marked all the
lines and had everything looking really beautiful.
“So it is very upsetting.
“There has been a few incidents there before,
but this is by far the worst.”
Junior football began on May 7, but because
of the damage Mr Mitchell says it has forced the
more than 200 players (aged 5-13) to “squeeze in”
on the opposite side of the sports ground.
The starting times now have to be staggered
to cater for the reduced number of pitches. Previously all six grades could begin their games
simultaneously.
“It would be wonderful if the community
showed more respect for the grounds and the
pleasure that our children get from playing sport
on them,” says Mr Mitchell.
“It’s not fair on the little kids or their families.
“We are very grateful to the council for the use
of the grounds and this would be a shame but I
think the only solution is to put some bollards up
to stop cars from getting on there at all.”
have kids that play sport otherwise they wouldn’t
do it,” he says.
“And in this case it is about the kids because this
is a junior sports field and the worst case is that
a young kid trips on an uneven surface, injures
themselves and then can’t play anymore because
someone did a wheelie.
“You just have to ask yourself why?”
UNACCEPTABLE
DAMAGE DONE: Waitomo mayor Brian Hanna says the vandalism damage at Centennial Park
sports field is a cost to ratepayers and “not a good look” for the district’s public image.
Kuiti like we did last week about twice a year,”
he says.
“It’s doesn’t seem to a big problem elsewhere
because what we are finding is that because a lot
of money is spent on sports grounds by clubs,
organisations and councils quite a bit is now
also being spent on bollards, gates and chains to
stop vandalism.
“They’re finding their money is better spent
putting bollards up than it is to get the likes of
myself in there to repair damage.”
Although the Waitomo District Council has
closed Centennial Park for 4-6 weeks while the
surface recovers, Mr Norvill says “in an ideal
world” he would close the grounds completely
over winter.
He says turf damage is a potential health risk.
“The people that go and do this probably don’t
Council’s (WDC) community services reserves
fund.
For the 2013/2014 financial year ending June
30, the total cost to repair vandalism in the district was $1716 which leapt to $4103 in 2014/2015
and to date in 2015/2016 vandalism has cost
a whopping $23,699 – the majority of which
($14,500) has been spent fixing turf damage at
Centennial Park in August and April.
Even the owner of Cambridge company Parklands Turf Ltd, that repaired the playing surface
last week, was blown away by the lack of respect
showed by the vandals.
Graeme Norvill’s sports turf renovation company services the greater Waikato area and,
RATEPAYERS PAY
he says vandalism like that at Centennial Park
The cost of repairs to local ratepayers was simply doesn’t happen anywhere else.
“We’ve been carrying out repair jobs in Te
nearly $9390 which came out of Waitomo District
Waitomo mayor Brian Hanna says the “hoon”
behaviour is simply unacceptable.
“They seem to be isolated incidents by a small
minority but they are destroying some of our
parks.
“It is really frustrating not just because of the
cost but also the inconvenience because so many
people really appreciate and enjoy the wonderful
recreational areas that we provide.
“Someone out there knows who is doing this
and we ask them to come forward and let the
police know.”
Aside from the cost to ratepayers, Mr Hanna
says the damage is “not a good look” for the district’s public image.
“If it continues we’ll have to look at locking the
gates at night [to Brook Park and the Mangaokewa
Reserve] but we don’t want to do that because all
you are doing is penalising the responsible citizens
who want to use these areas.
“And as for the fields they cut up at Centennial
Park, we just carried out an extensive drainage
project there last year to make them more fit for
purpose and then you get this sort of hoon behaviour which destroys everything we’ve put in place.”
Mr Hanna says the council has not discussed
erecting bollards around Centennial Park due to
the recent vandalism acts being considered as
“isolated incidents”.

Helpers back on beaches
THE volunteers who patrol Kawhia’s beaches
and sand dunes do the job ‘on the smell of an
oily rag’.
With few resources available to patrol a vast
area – from Maketu Marae to Ocean Beach and
Aotea Heads – Onepu Charitable Trust members
were devastated when their beach patrol quad
bike was stolen in November.
“We’ve been on a real downer since the bike
was pinched from under our house,” says trust
administrator Daisy Scott.
“We’ve been patrolling the beaches for eight
years now and everyone round here knows we’re
volunteers trying to help the community, so it was
quite a shock when some lowlife stole our bike.”
But now thanks to the generosity of Otorohonda and Pub Charity, the patrollers are back
on the beaches.
“Kawhia Hotel publicans Ani Tapara and Dave
Barnett supported our application for Pub Charity
funding to buy a replacement quad bike and Peter

Mr Maunsell says the funding will also enable
the project to be completed within a shorter

Taranaki-King Country MP Barbara Kuriger,
who cycled the trail with her husband Louis in
January, says she is delighted the Government is
investing $1.2 million in the lodge to help boost
tourism in the North King Country.
“Tourism is a significant part of our national

visitors to Taranaki-King Country which means
more money and more jobs for our local economy.”

Ocean Beach.
“We copped a lot of resistance when we first
started patrolling because people thought they
had the right to do what they liked regardless of
the harm they were causing to the environment,”
says Ms Scott.
“But now when we stop people to explain the
damage they’re doing, they’re generally pretty
good about it.”
She says during the holidays when there are
thousands of visitors in Kawhia patrollers go out
at low tide with an hour between bike runs so
they’ve got the whole foreshore covered. At other
times they mainly patrol during the weekends.
“While our main job is to help keep our
beaches safe, we’ve also played a part in rescuing
people whose vehicles have been caught by the
incoming tide, broken down or got bogged in
soft sand,” she says.
“We do our best to help anyone who is in
trouble and the people of Kawhia have supported
our efforts all the way.”
Mr Kerr-Bell says he was delighted to give the
trust a good deal because of the work members
do to keep their community safe.
“They were such lovely people to deal with and
we did our best to help them.
“The quads are in top condition and we gave
them a good going over so they do the job.
“Daisy told us the wind and sand give her a bit
of bother so we fitted an old-fashioned motorcycle windscreen to the one she rides so she’ll be
more comfortable.
“And we threw in a couple of safety helmets.
“It’s great to support a group doing good things
for their community.”
Fuel coupons to keep the quads on the beach
are supplied by Otorohanga District Council and
forest owners Tainui-Kawhia Inc.

process from registering the death and funeral
arrangements right through to orders of service,
headstone preparation and burial.
It’s a big responsibility during a very sensitive
time, but Zac never failed to guide each grieving
family with his trademark charm and respect.
“The Te Kuiti, Otorohanga and Maniapoto
communities have helped me so much,” he says.
“I’ve looked after a lot of their loved ones and
I’d just like to thank them for their support.
“I’d also like to acknowledge and thank Bruce
[Williams] for the comradeship and friendship
he’s shown me over the past 39 and a half years.”
PRIVILEGE
Throughout the years, Zac has become a
much-loved funeral director. So much so, that
he would often be asked for specifically during a
family’s time of need.
He says those requests were an honour and
a privilege, but he never lost sight of what was
most important.
“The most important thing for me was to treat
the deceased person with dignity and also to do
the best I possibly could to help the grieving family through an extremely difficult time.
“Afterwards when they’d say their loved one
looked so beautiful and the funeral was brilliant
– that meant more to me than all the money in
the world.”
TRUE & LOYAL
Mr Williams says despite Zac’s retirement the
two will remain close friends.
“When he handed his notice in and said he
was finishing work it floored me a little,” he says.
“He has been a true and loyal employee who
was great at his job and I couldn’t have asked for
a better person to work here.”
Zac says he’s looking forward to some time
off, spending time with family and “pottering
around”.
LOVE & SUPPORT
Reflecting on his years as a funeral director,
Zac says the love and support he received from
the community was crucial for him to provide
compassionate farewells.
And he was involved in every stage of the

Project ‘Be Safe Be Seen’
launched in Otorohanga
OTOROHANGA District Council’s road safety
co-ordinator Rachel Stubbs and local police are
working together in a project called ‘Be Safe, Be
Seen’ to help keep children safe when walking,
biking or bussing to school.
“With plenty of foggy mornings already happening and many more wet and windy mornings
and evenings to come, we have got together and
looked at different ways to help keep children safe
when out and about,” says Rachel.
“We have decided that a clip-on flashing glow
stick is a good way to help keep our primary
school children seen.”
VERSATILE
The versatile glow sticks clip onto backpack
straps or clothing items and have a reflective
strip which has three glow options – a yellow
fluro reflective strip; a flashing red light or a solid
red light.
The glow stick is encased in a tough fabric cover
and has replaceable batteries.
“It’s important to keep the children of Otorohanga district safe and seen on the roads,” says
Rachel.
“Dress them in bright coloured clothes and buy
bright fluro-coloured backpacks.”
She encourages people to talk to their children
about keeping safe on the road whether they are
biking, walking or catching a bus.
“Even better take a step in your children’s shoes
and see it from their point of view.
“You can walk or bike with them, or how about
sending them off and following in your car a short
time later to see if they are easily seen.”

Drivers also play an important role in the ‘Be
Safe, Be Seen’ project.
If it is raining, icy or foggy road conditions will
be more dangerous so project co-ordinators are
asking local motorists to drive with extra care.
Rachel says tips for driving in bad weather
include motorists checking their cars have effective brakes, tyres, windscreen wipers, lights and
steering, which “are even more crucial in wet
weather” before they drive.
“Check your vehicle regularly to make sure
it’s in good condition and adjust your driving as
wet, frosty or icy roads
can be very slippery,”
she says.
“You also need to
increase your following distance because it
takes longer to stop on
a slippery surface. You
should increase your
following distance by
using the four-second
rule. “
She’s also asking
drivers to watch their
visibility
“Visibility can be seriously reduced by rain,
snow or fog. This can

dow.”
Drivers also need to brake carefully
“Unless your vehicle has ABS brakes, don’t
brake too hard when it is wet,” says Rachel.
“You may go into a dangerous skid so pump
the brakes gently.”
“If your vehicle has ABS brakes, never pump
the brakes in an emergency. Keep the pedal
pressed down hard and steer out of trouble.
“Don’t become over-confident in your driving
just because your vehicle has ABS brakes.”
Rachel says drivers also need to be careful of
spray from passing vehicles, reducing their speed
if the roads are wet, and dipping lights when
driving in fog.
“If you drive with your lamps on full beam in
fog, the light will just reflect back on you. Dip your
lights – it will be much easier to see.
“Don’t just turn your park lights on. They are
hard for oncoming drivers to see you so do little
to improve your vision.”
Rachel says it is hoped ‘Be Safe, Be Seen’ glow
sticks will be distributed to all schools within the
next month.

wins $16k fellowship Farmers for Farmers
HAVING an autistic child led a former Otorohanga College student into early childhood education and, she’s now been awarded the country’s
highest honour that an early childhood teacher
can receive.
Karine Te Kanawa (nee Levy), now living in
Tauranga, is the recipient of this year’s Margaret May Blackwell Travel Fellowship valued at
$16,000. The fellowship is for early childhood
educators to explore international practice or
programmes with relevance to New Zealand.
Mrs Te Kanawa will use her award to undertake
a six-week study course in Hawaii in October
centred on the immersion of their indigenous
language at an early childhood level.
The annual fellowship is run by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER)
on behalf of the Margaret May Blackwell Trust.
NZCER’s Sarah Boyd says: “The selectors felt
Karine’s passion for te reo came through strongly
in her ‘Maori language revitalisation is current
and relevant to early childhood education in New
Zealand’ proposal.”
Mrs Te Kanawa will work voluntarily in Hawaii learning about the systems in place for their
indigenous people to protect and advocate the
Hawaiian language across the education system.
“Their system Punana Leo, is similar to Te
Kohanga Reo used in New Zealand,” says Mrs
Te Kanawa.
She plans to visit Hawaiian language preschools
and hopes to gain insights into all aspects of how
the language is nurtured including self-review
processes, learning and planning, and how the
curriculum fits into the everyday life of the
centres. She also hopes to observe immersion
programmes in primary and secondary schools.

Mrs Te Kanawa says her interest in early childhood teaching was sparked because of her mildly
autistic son Trevor.
“I knew there was something different about
Trevor when he was about 15 months old. In order
to get some assistance with his development my
husband Eddie and I made the decision to enrol
him in Annie’s Childcare Centre in Otorohanga.
“In 2006, when he was two years old I began
as a reliever at the centre and moved into fulltime
work shortly after that.”
She began study at the New Zealand Tertiary
College in Auckland in 2009 but says “life got
in the way” and she eventually completed her
Bachelor of Early Childhood Education degree in
October 2015. She is now enrolled as a part-time
student at the University of Waikato studying for
her Masters in Educational Leadership.

Transport king
receives NZOM
THE Otorohanga transport industry titan
who built an empire from humble beginnings
was presented with the New Zealand Order of
Merit last week.
Jim Barker, aged 78, who now lives in Mt
Maunganui, received an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit from Tauranga mayor Stuart
Crosby on behalf of Her Majesty, The Queen.
The award was bestowed on him in the 2016
New Year’s Honours List for his services to the
transport industry and philanthropy.
Mr Crosby says it was an honour to present the
insignia to Mr Barker at his home surrounded
by family.
“It truly was a privilege to be able to formally
recognise this great New Zealander for all that he
has given to the community and his investment
in the industry of transport and farming,” says
Mr Crosby.
FOUNDING THE GROUP
A coalminer’s son from Huntly, Mr Barker was
born in 1938. In 1963, he and his brother-in-law
the late Dennis Dow bought Otorohanga Transport (OTL), a small general carrying company.
Since then Jim and his family have gone on to
build one of the country’s biggest transport group,
the Jim Barker Group of Companies which now
includes Stock Lines, Freight Lines, Bulk Lines
and Streamline Freight.
After experiencing problems transporting
stock across Cook Strait, Mr Barker and partners
purchased a ship – the Straitsman – in 1992 and

Strait Shipping was formed.
Through market research they identified the
potential for an increase in demand in linehaul,
bulk and general freight resulting in the establishment of Freight Lines in 1993. By 2002, they had
expanded the business to include a Cook Strait
passenger ferry service – Bluebridge.
CONTRIBUTIONS
Mr Barker’s contribution to his industry
and community includes the introduction of a
driver training scheme to address a shortage of
truck drivers; supporting the introduction of the
iShift transmission in trucks imported into NZ,
contributing to safer and more fuel efficient truck
transport; a community support programme
that contributes more than $120,000 per annum
to community groups; providing significant
support to the Neurological Foundation of New
Zealand, the Child Cancer Foundation, CCS
Disability Action and the Kaipupu Sanctuary
[Picton] and providing support to those in need
through transporting supplementary feed for
farming communities during drought, mining
equipment following the Pike River mining disaster and emergency supplies in response to the
Christchurch earthquakes.
The New Zealand Order of Merit is awarded
to those “who in any field of endeavour, have
rendered meritorious service to the Crown and
the nation or who have become distinguished
by their eminence, talents, contributions, or
other merits”.

Notice of aerial survey for kauri
dieback 21 May to 6 June 2016
This is a great opportunity for us, as Otorohanga
business people, to be heard, so come along and
engage in some Q&A with Barbara. Open to non
OBA members too.
Waikato Regional Council advises it will be surveying the Waikato’s west coast
and north Waikato areas for signs of kauri dieback – a fungus-like disease that
can kill kauri of all ages and sizes.
As with our previous highly successful OBA
networking events, it will be held at the Tuatara
Room and there will be nibbles available.
Please rsvp to [email protected]
Ad sponsored by Gallie Miles.
The aerial survey, using a fixed wing aircraft, will take three days between
21 May and 6 June 2016. The exact dates will depend on suitable
weather conditions.
The survey is part of the National Kauri Dieback programme and will be carried
out for the council by a kauri dieback expert from Biospatial Ltd.

Harris chosen for
Irish tetrathlon
WAITOMO
On July 29, the teams move to Tattersalls,
County Meath for the Irish Pony Club International Exchange competition run in conjunction
with the tetrathlon championship.
Having grown up on a farm, Harris is quietly
confident about her shooting skills.
“I haven’t done much target shooting, but
I’ve shot a fair number of rabbits with a 22 and
a 410,” she says.
“I’ve nailed a homemade target to a fence post
so I can get in a bit of practice before I fly out.
“I haven’t done a lot of swimming either, but
I’ve been putting in a lot of hours at the gym
building up my fitness for the 1500 metre race
and we only have to swim as far as we can in three
minutes, so I’ll do my best.”
She’s not too worried about riding an unknown horse, because the odds are they’ll be
well-schooled and she’s used to riding young,
difficult horses.
Harris, who has represented her club – Te
Kuiti & Districts – at regional level and Waikato IRELAND BOUND: Stormy Harris has been selected to represent New Zealand in Ireland

TALENTED Piopio equestrian Stormy Harris
has been selected for a New Zealand pony club
team competing in Ireland in July.
But it’s not just horse riding the-17-year old
is preparing for.
Harris, who is in year 13 at Piopio College, will
compete in the demanding Irish International
Tetrathlon which includes four sports – horse
cross country, air pistol and rifle target shooting,
running and swimming.
Virtually unknown in NZ, tetrathlons – for
competitors aged 16-20 years – are popular
overseas.
They require good horsemanship and general
athletic ability.
Harris was selected for the national side after
competing in the New Zealand Pony Club Association’s Eventing Championships in Christchurch in April.
“This is my first international competition,
so it’s a huge step up for me, especially as I’ll be
riding a borrowed horse over 1.05 metre jumps,”
she says.
“Luckily I know a couple of the others who
also made the (NZPCA) girls’ team and we’ll all
support each other.”
After arriving in Ireland the riders will visit
the Royal Dublin Horse Show, then ride suitable
horses with their host families before their first
competition on July 24-25.
