ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Suji Upasena (Multicultural Enterprises):
ArtWest started off as a project of Multicultural Enterprises Australia, a social enterprise at the
Cabramatta Community Centre. Originally called the Multicultural Artists Club (MAC), it was
set up to support artists to earn an income from their artwork.
MAC really took off when Joel Dickens, a professional artist from Paddington agreed to
volunteer his skills to mentor the group.With funding secured to run professional development
workshops, visits to art galleries in the City and group meetings, the group is now highly
organised running their own meetings and painting together to prepare for the “Convergence”
at Sydney Children’s Hospital.
Joel Dickens (ArtWest Mentor):
I am from the UK but have been living and painting in Sydney for 11 years (and have been
painting internationally for 20 years). I met Suji through a chance meeting with one of the artists
and decided to organise some workshops and invited artists and aspiring artists from the local
Fairfield region.We had a great response and at some point during the workshops MAC became
ArtWest.
Now an organised artists’ collaborative,ArtWest’s aim is to connect, through art, with the wider
Sydney audience, from ‘out west’ where, in their view, artistic endeavours are often overlooked.
The artists are from very different backgrounds. Some have been here in Australia for years,
some for only months. Some have studied Fine Art formally at prestigious universities such as
the Institute of Fine Art in Iraq, whilst others have pursued their passion for art as a hobby. Each
of them takes art seriously and they have all worked incredibly hard to produce the
show exhibited here. Some, not all, have experienced hardship, with first-hand experiences
of war and displacement, but despite this the group as a whole wished to present here an
exhibition of humour, hope and beauty.
It is a privilege to work with such dedicated and hard-working artists and the warmth, trust and
gratitude they have shown me has been overwhelming.
ABOUT THE ART PROGRAM
The Art Program with the motto “Art Celebrating Life” is funded by Sydney Children’s Hospital
Foundation and our partner Louis Vuitton Australia. The Program channels the visual arts
through exhibitions, workshops, a permanent collection and digital displays to improve the lives
of the Hospital’s brave young patients, to inspire and engage their families and carers, and to
transform the Sydney’s Children’s Hospital into a dynamic cultural hub.
