Program Highlights
The Brain Fitness Program
Saturday, Dec 1st • 2pm
This program presents a workout to help viewers get their
brains in better shape. THE BRAIN FITNESS
PROGRAM is based on neuro-plasticity, the ability of the
brain to change and adapt — even rewire itself. In the past
two years, a team of scientists has developed computerbased stimulus sets that drive beneficial chemical, physical
and functional changes in the brain. Dr. Michael Merzenich
of the University of California San Francisco and his
colleagues around the world have been leading this effort;
he brings the research findings, along with a scientifically based set of brain exercises,
to PBS viewers in this innovative and life-altering program. Peter Coyote narrates.
Good Night With
the Sleep Doctor
Michael Breus, PhD
Saturday, Dec 1st • 5pm
Noted sleep expert Dr. Michael
Breus explains to viewers how
their genes, environment, job
habits and physiology may be
hampering sleep and thus
dramatically affecting their
waking life. The doctor suggests
that getting proper sleep (both
quality and quantity) will
rejuvenate the mind and body,
improve sex life, increase energy
reserves and help viewers lose
weight and keep it off —
perhaps even take years off their
appearance.
Barry Manilow: Great
Songs from The 70s
Monday, Dec 3rd • 8pm
Barry Manilow’s music is synonymous with
the 70s. The legendary singer and songwriter
revisits that era — which his songs helped
define — in
BARRY
MANILOW:
SONGS
FROM THE
SEVENTIES.
Inspired by his
highly
anticipated
CD, The
Greatest Songs
of the Seventies,
the television
event features
Manilow performing his own hits, as well as
some of his favorites of the decade, and
sharing his personal experiences with the
audience at the Steiner Studios in Brooklyn,
New York, the city where he was born and
raised.

Bob
Dylan:
Live in
Newport
Saturday,
Dec 1st
8pm
This program
includes
Bob Dylan
performances filmed by Academy Award-winning director
Murray Lerner at the Newport Folk Festival, 1963-1965,
capturing full performances of some of Dylan’s greatest
songs, including Mr. Tambourine Man, Blowin’ In the Wind, It
Ain’t Me, Babe, Like a Rolling Stone. His 1963 and 1964
performances made him popular with the Newport crowd,
but in 1965, he decided to “plug in,” resulting in a mixed
response of cheers and boos. Dylan left the stage after only
three songs. Though he re-emerged and sang two acoustic
numbers, this shift marked his changing artistic direction as he
moved from leading contemporary songwriter of the folk
scene to rock ‘n’ roll star.
Vivere: Andrea Bocelli
Live in Tuscany
Friday, Dec 7th • 9pm
Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli grew up in Lajatico, a rural village
in Tuscany, where his family still farms nearby. Last July, on the
slopes of his ancient hill town, a special theater was
constructed for a one-night-only concert of his greatest
popular hits, along with new songs performed to honor the
occasion. Some famous musical friends dropped by, and the
magical result is VIVERE: ANDREA BOCELLI LIVE
IN TUSCANY.

Democracy Left

Friday, Dec 14th • 8pm
Full Focus:
Gees Bend Quilts
Saturday, Dec 1st • 11:30am
Renowned for their distinct visual
style and their compelling history, the
Gees Bend quilts have struck a cord
with people from all over the world.
FULL FOCUS talks with the quilt
makers about these powerful cultural
objects so that people in the
Northwest can come to understand
what it is about the Quilts of Gees
Bend that represent the essence of
local community.
How effectively do our public schools
prepare students for active participation in
democratic society? Is there a relationship
between an often ill-informed public and
the manner in which social and political
issues are addressed in our nation’s
classrooms? In DEMOCRACY LEFT
BEHIND, award-winning documentary
filmmaker Bob Gliner (Heifer, Education
for What?, Time Frenzy) examines the
impact of No Child Left Behind on
dramatically limiting the ability of schools
to serve a civic mission – in the process
making it difficult for many students to
understand what their education means in
the larger context of the society and world
they inhabit.

night of joy, laughter, tears
and romance.”

Cities of Light:
The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain
Monday, Dec 17th • 8pm
This film (from the producers of MUHAMMAD: LEGACY OF A PROPHET) takes
viewers on an epic journey back into one of the most captivating and important periods
of world history - a centuries-long period when
Muslims, Christians and Jews inhabited the same
far corner of Western Europe and thrived. The
lemon tree, the water wheel and Aristotle’s lost
philosophy all arrived in Europe through Islamic
Spain, as did algebra and the beginnings of
modern medicine, science and poetry. Here were
the very roots of the European Renaissance. But
the fragile union dissipated, destroyed by greed,
fear and intolerance.

Letter from the General Manager
As 2007 comes to a close, I want to thank you for all you
have helped us accomplish this year. Your generosity keeps
public broadcasting strong in our community.
We hope you are enjoying your favorites from PBS – and
Debbie Emond
the distinctive new programs you make possible.
Every year your contribution to public television is invested back into the
community with programs that give us a better understanding of world events,
bring stories to life, celebrate true courage and allow us to continue our personal
education outside of a classroom. Although KBTC operates with a budget that’s a
mere fraction of a commercial network’s budget, we never, ever compromise on
the quality of the programs you see on air.
So, thank you once again for your outstanding support of KBTC this past year.
I hope you share my pride in all that you help make possible on KBTC, and I trust
that we can look forward to your continued support in 2008.
On behalf of the entire staff of KBTC, I wish you a safe and happy holiday
season!
Sincerely,
Debbie Emond

graduates spend the summer crossing
the country in bright green RVs and
interviewing leaders from all walks of
