In Memory of Reverend Susumu Kyojo
Ikuta (Nov 23 1926-Apr 24, 2014)
It is with great sadness that we learned
of the passing of Reverend Sus Ikuta. We
are all benefactors of the great passion he
committed to sharing the Dharma. He gave
selflessly to develop Buddhism and the Jodo
Shinshu tradition in Canada. As a leader of
great vision, he taught lessons that leave
lasting impressions.
Following his graduation in 1958 with a M.A. in Buddhist
Studies from Ryukoku University, Sus and Terrie returned to
Canada where he began over 50 years of services as a
Jodo Shinshu Buddhist minister for the Buddhist Churches of
Canada. From 1998 to 2002, he served as Bishop of the
Buddhist Churches of Canada. In 1972, the family moved to
Calgary where Sus began his longest posting as a resident
minister. The sangha was still very much in the fledgling stage
without a permanent home. In 1981, the founding members
and Sus fulfilled their dream by raising funds to purchase
the Croatian Catholic Church on 6 Street N. E. to establish
the Calgary Buddhist Temple. The Edo Japan franchise was
started to help sustain the Temple. Sus worked full-time,
both as the president of Edo Japan International and as the
resident minister for the Temple. Over the years, the Temple
has established itself within the rich multi-faith mosaic of the
city of Calgary.
Sus led a wonderful life of 87 years passing away quietly
surrounded by his family.
Reverend “Sus” Ikuta, as he was affectionately called by
many friends, spent much of his tenure at Calgary Buddhist
Temple. The temple is rebuilding and the Ikuta family has
expressed a desire to provide an avenue of donation to the
building fund (New Calgary Temple Campaign) as an option
for remembrance.
It is with great honour that we follow Reverend “Sus”
kuta’s footsteps on the path of the Dharma.

Fried Green Beans
Warm a large skillet or wok over medium heat. When the
skillet is hot, pour in canola and sesame oils, then place
whole green beans into the skillet. Stir the beans to coat
with oil. Cook until the beans are bright green and slightly
browned in spots, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat, and
stir in soy sauce; cover, and let sit about 5 minutes. Transfer
to a serving platter, and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.

Highlights of April Board Meeting
Programs
The April 14 board meeting was lengthy due to discussion of the JSBTC AGM resolutions,
restructuring of the temple committees and report from the Planning Committee. Temple
delegates, Bud Sakamoto and Kiyo Domai, were given approval to vote for most of the
resolutions and abstain from one resolution. Elmer Morishita and Terry Beresford will be
attending the AGM as observers.
Temple committees have been reduced in number: Executive, Religious, Finance, Temple
Events and Programming and Building/Grounds. Subcommittees are formed under these
main committees. Temple members, not only board members, should serve under these
smaller committees. In many cases long term commitment is not required and attendance at
the board meetings is not required except for giving reports.

LOOKING AT THE
TEMPLE’S FUTURE
DO YOU HAVE
The Property Redevelopment Committee has been charged by
the Board with the task of exploring options to use temple assets
to create a plan that will sustain and revitalize the Temple and
its associated buildings for the next 50 years. We have hired a
consultant to help us in this process.
The goal is to develop an action plan and realize it by the year
2020. The first phase involves examining a range of issues and
possibilities for the temple and surrounding land, including:
1.Having professionals examine the condition of the temple to
determine the extent of structural and other infrastructure issues
(plumbing, electrical, etc.), assess the extent of repairs needed
to maintain or upgrade the temple and other buildings to last
another 50 years.
2.To explore what options would best help us financially address
the temple and associated building maintenance and repair costs.
3.To examine what redevelopment possibilities would best fit with
our future plans;
4.To report our findings and make recommendations to the Sangha
to ensure the future of the Temple operation for the next 50
years.
To that end, we need you to consider what we are doing with
an open mind and an open heart. We need your cooperation, full
support and participation as we go through the next phases of our
work on your behalf.
We will have a series of articles in the newsletter to let you know
information we are gathering and issues that play a part in developing
a clear vision and direction for the Temple’s future

この春から婦人会の活動範囲が広がりました。メープルレジ
デンスで毎月第１木曜日に生田先生が法要をなさいますの
で、婦人会が参加者にお茶とお茶菓子を差し上げることにし
ました。4月の法要では阿久根イトコさんと西かよこさんが
茶とおまんじゅうを出しました。
バンクーバー仏教会でカナダ教団婦人会総会があり、婦人会
のいろいろな活動やゴールについて学ぶ良い機会となりまし
た。参加者は、浜浦ミサエさん、カワモト・ヒロコさん、ラ
イアン・ジーニーさん、トヨダ・ミユキさん、吉原ヒロコで
した。2015年の婦人会総会はスティーブストン仏教会であ
りますので、その計画を立てるのに良い経験になりました。
会員の深草しのぶさんが5月に日本で得度を得るために必要
な費用を婦人会が一部援助をいたします。お盆やコンサート
に協力してくださったシノブさんの得度が希望どうりいきま
すよう願っています。

お寺の将来について
資産再開発委員会は役員会で発足し、お寺の財産を利用して
次の５０年間の計画を立て、お寺とそれに付随した建物を維
持、活性化させる方法を検討する。そのためにコンサルタン
トをすでに採用した。
ゴールは行動計画を立てそれを２０２０年までに実現するこ
とである。第１期はお寺とその土地に関する下記のような問
題点と可能性を検討する。

4月の萌の会では映画を鑑賞しました。朝から雨がシトシト
ト降り、映画鑑賞日にはもってこいでした。次回は5月22日

始めることにしました。仏教の教えに関する

今月の質問：仏教の重要な日にち
先生、
私は長年お寺にお参りしていますが未だに仏教の重要な日にち
とその意味が分かりません。でも簡単なことなので恥ずかしく
て個人的にお聞きできません。それでここに書いています。簡
単にリストアップして下さったら何のためにお布施を差し上げ
ているのか誰にでもわかると思います。　日にちにまごつい
ている者より。
まごついた方へ
重要な質問をありがとう。あなただけでなく他の方達も同様だ
と思います。下に重要な日にちのリストを作りましたので、切
り抜いて冷蔵庫にでも貼っておいてください。下の日付は実際
の日付で、お寺では日曜日の法要の時にこれらの法要が行われ
ますのでお気を付け下さい。ですから、この日付どおりではあ
りませんが、この日付を見れば何が何月にあるかが分かりま
す。

この新しいニュースレターは作る過程を合理
化し、外部に印刷を頼むことで費用も節約で
きます。さらに、ニュースレターの配布方法
も変え、毎月の祥月法要にいらしたすべての
方達に手渡せるようにします。出席されな
れなかった会員にはボランティアが配達する
か、郵便かイーメールで送るかします。この
新しい配達方法は郵便料金を年間で1000ドル
以上も節約します。
仏教会理事会は効果的で慎重に仕事を進め、
お寺の将来の発展に努力します。

4月の役員会のまとめ
春の食品バザー
4月14日の役員会は、カナダ教団総会の決議案、お寺の委員会組織の変更、
計画委員会からの報告等の議論で長時間にわたった。カナダ教団総会のお寺
の代表である坂本バッド氏と堂前キヨ氏に一つを除いて、ほとんどの決議案
に賛成する許可が下りた。また、森下エルマー氏とベレスフォード・テリー
氏はオブザーバーとして総会に参加することになった。
お寺の委員会は総数が減り、理事、宗教、財政、お寺の行事と計画、建物・
敷地の5つとなった。小委員会はこれらの委員会の下に作られる。役員及び
会員はこの小委員会で活動する。多くの場合、長期間役員をする必要はな
く、役員会への出席は報告を提出するとき以外は必要ではない。
計画委員会はCHMCの補助金以外の資金も必要である。いろいろな選択肢
や参加したアドバイザーの意見等を検討した結果、財政委員会の決定に委ね
られることになった。さらに、近々、祥月の会員参加者にアンケート調査が
配られる。
その他：深草しのぶ氏の得度の勉強のためにお寺から$1,000、婦人会から
$1,000が援助される。ガーデナーの佐藤氏がお寺の芝刈りを退職された。ど
うもご苦労様でした。

Spring Concert
Hanamatsuri
April 20th was the Hanamatsuri
Service, complete with flowers,
sweet tea, and performances by
Dharma School students.
During a wonderful lunch
by the Fujinkai, one of our
regular
meditation
participants
Kathy Yamamoto, who works for
Science World, put on a show for
young and old, that showcased
the elements fo Water, Wind and
Fire.
The April 12th Essence of
Spring` concert in the Hondo had
the audience standing in their
seats to watch Etsu Essence
Inoue create her captivating
large-scale calligrapyy pieces.
While the instruments, ranging
from Shakuhatchi and Guitar to
Digeridoo and the temple`s own
percussion bells, captivated the
audience with improvised music by
Alcvin Ryuzen Ramos and Chris
Bernetchez. The vibe and intensity
of the trio made the show seem
much too short, and a number
of the created pieces were sold
before the ink had a chance
to dry. It was very impressive
to hear home-made instruments
tell ancient tales, while Essence
wielded brushes larger than her
arm and fanned cherry blossom
petals to adhere to her image of
`road`as a final touch. As another
concert in our series of `new`
performances, guests travelled
from as far as Coquitlam and
Langley to catch this performance,
and judging from the call s for an
encore the attendees left satisfied.
