Nursing Pinning Ceremony
Thursday, December 18th, 2014
6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Nurse’s Prayer
When I falter, give me courage.
When I tire, renew my strength.
When I weaken because I'm human,
Inspire me on to greater length.
If doctors and patients become demanding,
And days are too short for all my duty,
Help me remember I chose to serve,
To do so with grace, and spiritual beauty.
In humility, Lord, I labor long hours,
Nursing Symbols
Nursing Pin
The unique nursing pin from each nursing school has long been
recognized as part of the nurse’s uniform. The Los Angeles
Southwest College pin symbolizes the students have completed the
rigorous program of study leading to an Associate Degree in
Nursing. The Los Angeles Southwest College pin has been presented
to the graduates of this program since 1970
The Candle Lighting
The candle lighting symbolizes the transfer of knowledge from the
nursing faculty to the students. The transmission of knowledge by
passing of the lights has its roots in Greek mythology
The Rose
As the graduates exit, they will receive a rose. This symbol of
perfection exemplifies the integrity, dependability, unity, and high
ideas necessary in the practice of nursing
And though I sometimes may fret;
My mission is mercy.
Abide with me that I may never forget.

I am so lucky to have discovered nursing as a career path because I cannot
imagine any other career that I could be so passionate about. I have the
opportunity to serve as not only a healthcare provider but as a source of
reassurance and comfort for the frightened or anxious patient. In
whichever specialty I end up in nursing, as long as I am advocating and
holistically caring for my patients, that will be more than enough for me. I
would like to thank my boyfriend, Michael, for supporting me throughout
the nursing program. He has provided me with so much that I am forever
grateful. I could not have achieved this far without him. I would also like to
thank Professor McClellan, Professor Song, Professor Thompson, Professor
Holt-Carter, Professor Webster and Dr. Azubuike for their guidance and
encouragement, which has been essential for my success in this program.
They have consistently conveyed such genuine concern for my academic,
professional, and personal well-being, always making themselves available
or assisting me in any way possible, that I simply cannot thank them
enough for all they have done. Congratulations everyone we made it!

I am so unbelievably thankful for the love and
support I have received through this chaotic
rollercoaster called nursing school. To my mom and
dad, thank you for always believing in me, you are
my inspiration. To my family and loved ones, thank
you for giving me the continuous encouragement to
keep going. To my Christopher, thank you for always
being by my side and for going through this journey
with me. To my friends, thank you for being so
understanding. To my professors, thank you for pushing me to many
points of mental breakdown but thank you for sharing your wisdom and
teaching me your knowledge. And to my fellow classmates, you have
become more to me than I could have ever imagined, a big dysfunctional
family, but family nonetheless. I am so fortunate to have shared such an
amazing experience with an even more amazing group of people. I am so
proud of you all!

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed;
perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not
abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. (2
Corinthians 4:8-9)
This two and half year has been the most challenging
period for me. Nursing program has molded me in
becoming compassion, knowledgeable, and
responsible individual from the beginning. Today, I
would like to give thanks to my God - my provider;
my family – my protector, and my friends – my supporter. Without you in
my life, it will be impossible to go through this journey by myself. I also
want to give thanks to my teachers and faculty members who helped me
became who I am today, a professional nurse. Last but not least, I would
like to congratulate my beloved classmates, yes, we did it!

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He
maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth
me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: He
leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his
name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou
art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."
