Dusty Tuckness – Bullfighter
They say the Wrangler NFR gets in your blood. After six consecutive years
(2009-2014) in the Thomas & Mack Center, Dusty Tuckness is thoroughly infected
with NFR fever.
“One of my goals since I was a kid has always been to go to the Finals, and
another is to beat the records of other bullfighters who have gone there. To go
once is an achievement, but to go 12 times like Darrell Diefenbach or 14 times
like Joe Baumgartner (13 consecutive, 14 overall), that’s the ultimate goal. I want
to push forward and get myself into their category.”
But Tuckness is driven by more than competitive fire.
“I try to be as consistent as I can, do my job day in and day out, and hope
that will lead to a good outcome at the end of the year. Every year I get to go
back, it means I’ve been consistent and the bull riders trust me and want to see
me in the arena, so to keep going back is a real honor.”
Tuckness knows he’ll get a little beaten at the Wrangler NFR, but it’s all part of the sport as far as
he’s concerned.
“Rodeo is a game where there’s not a set pattern,” says the former high school football standout.
“When guys are riding for world championships, they tend to hang on a little longer, and that can put
them in a more hazardous spot when they hit the ground. And some of the new bulls had some hook
to them. But I always go in thinking that every bull is the meanest one around, because I want to be on
guard and always ready to take the shot for the cowboy if needed. I felt like we all did a good job of that
this year – we step up our game at the NFR. Getting to go back is a dream come true.”
Cody Webster – Bullfighter
Cody Webster joined the PRCA in February 2011 and was selected by PRCA
bull riders to work the sport’s “Super Bowl,” the Wrangler NFR, less than two
years later – a huge honor. And in 2014, he returned for his second consecutive
appearance.
“I used to watch the NFR in diapers, with my folks,” Webster said. “I’ve been
dreaming about working it all my life, so it really was a dream come true. It was
everything I thought it would feel like, but walking down that alley … you’ve got
to times it by 100 to get close to what it really feels like. It’s very heart-touching.”
Webster thinks that at age 21, he was the youngest bullfighter ever to work
the Wrangler NFR.
“It was cool to go in there and show everybody what the young guys can
do,” he said. “It was overwhelming with the first few bulls, but after that I just
did what I’ve been doing all year – fighting bulls mentally correctly. With 18,000 people watching you,
you don’t want to mess up.”
Of course, that’s not the only unusual aspect of working that particular rodeo. Webster liked the
arena size, as well.
“Those aren’t the tightest quarters I’ve worked – I’ve worked some arenas that aren’t much bigger
than a living room,” he said. “The (Thomas & Mack Center arena) is the perfect size, to me. It’s small
enough that the situation won’t run away from you, which is good because those bulls are on their game.”
And best of all, he got to work with good friends; he lives with 2014 Wranger NFR bullfighter Chuck
Swisher, right, and often travels with Dusty Tuckness, above.

Chuck Swisher – Bullfighter
After years of wondering what it would be like to get That Call saying
“You’re going to work the NFR!” … Chuck Swisher got the call last October.
And what was the experience really like, Chuck?
“Dusty (Tuckness), (Cody) Webster, (Justin) Rumford and I were all
working the RAM Prairie Circuit Finals in Duncan, Okla., together, and we
knew it was the day the NFR calls went out. I prayed about it and asked God
to put a peace over me – to remind me that I’m still me, whatever happens.
“We were in Duncan hanging out with Rumford’s triplets. Every time
Dusty’s phone rang, I started, but it was always somebody else. Then
Rump’s phone rang, and he walked away. He came back crying and said
he had gotten some of the greatest news he had ever gotten.
“Then Dusty’s phone rang, and he walked behind the trailer and came
back with a big grin on his face. I was trying to rock the baby and not drop it. Then Webster’s
phone rang and he walked around the trailer. When he came back, he said, ‘I’m going to Vegas!’
“My two roommates, my two best friends – they get to go! I was so excited for them. It seemed
like an hour before my phone rang, but it might have been two or three minutes. I started bawling
my eyes out. I was still rocking the baby and trying not to scare it. The lady on the phone couldn’t
understand my voice; I was so overwhelmed with the joy of being selected. I gave back the baby
and just dropped to my knees and thanked God for making it happen.
“Then I called my mom. I was crying, and she asked, ‘What’s wrong?!’
“I told her, and she called out to my dad, ‘Chuck’s going to Vegas,’ and my dad said, ‘Oh, what
for?’ And then they were crying too.”
Swisher says the Finals exceeded his expectations.
“I knew it would be the 10 greatest days of my life, but I was a nervous wreck,” he recalls. “During
the first perf, we were warming up in the tunnel during the barrel racing. There were nine trash
cans in that tunnel and every one of them had my name on it. But once we stepped onto the dirt,
I felt at home – jacked up but with peace coming over me. I thanked God again and they bucked
the first bull, and suddenly it was like any other rodeo.
“It’s a blessing to do the job we do.”
Justin Rumford – Barrelman
There’s nothing quite like going to the Wrangler NFR with your best
buddies, says Justin Rumford – especially the ones you’ve known for a
long time. (When Rumford was in high school, his girlfriend was bullfighter
Chuck Swisher’s babysitter.)
“Iron sharpens iron,” Rumford says, quoting Proverbs 27. “You want
to take care of your friends in the arena and wherever you go. That made
the NFR more fun – it meant more.”
“The first perf really did go as fast as everyone said it would. I’m used
to doing comedy during the rodeo, but at the NFR, we had so much fun
hanging out in the locker room until the barrel racing started. I was so
excited, I could have jumped through the roof of the Thomas & Mack Center.”
Rumford, the son of PRCA stock contractor Bronc Rumford, started out in ProRodeo as a saddle
bronc rider, but his Wrangler NFR dreams were born long before that.
“When I was 6 years old, someone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I drew
a picture of the NFR – a guy on a bull and a guy in a barrel,” he remembers. “My mom and dad
had it framed for me for Christmas last year, when my dream came true after 34 years. All I ever
wanted to do was get into the NFR.”
Rumford’s triplets were just a year old when he finally made it, but he knows what he’ll tell
them about the experience when they get old enough to understand.
“I’ll tell them how great it was to have them there. I’ll never forget how proud I was to roll the
barrel out into the Thomas & Mack Center arena and see them sitting there, four rows up. And
I’ll tell them, if you want something enough, never quit working at it. There were times along my
road that people suggested it was time for me to stop working at it and get a job, but I never
listened – I just kept going,
“It’s just like having triplets. It might be hard, but you can do anything you want to do.
“I still think about it all the time. I wish I could hit rewind and go do it again.”

Contestants and judges aren’t the only people in the rodeo arena. During roughstock events, there
may be bullfighters, clowns and/or a barrelman, as well. All of these rodeo participants are card-holding
members of the PRCA who have been recommended by leaders in their categories and approved by
the PRCA based on their performance.
Bullfighters are rodeo athletes whose job is to protect bull riders after they dismount or are bucked
off the bulls. Bullfighters move toward the bull immediately to distract it with sound, movement and
sometimes touch, in order to direct its attention away from the cowboy and toward the exit gate.
Bullfighters often throw their bodies between the bull and rider, and may take a hooking (a “punch”
from the bull’s horns) so the bull rider doesn’t have to.
Clowns are not responsible for cowboy protection; they are entertainers who keep the audience
engaged during breaks in the rodeo. Many visit with audiences before the rodeo, and some perform
public relations functions in local communities before and during the rodeo.
Barrelmen work in both areas – they entertain the audience, often by interacting comically with
the rodeo announcers, and they help with bull rider protection. The barrelman places his barrel where
it may give the bull an alternate target after the bull ride. He may jump in and out of it as needed, or
position it so the cowboy or bullfighters can use it as cover.
All three categories of personnel are considered integral to rodeo and are part of every PRCAsanctioned rodeo.

experience in the PRCA and some allied organizations.
