Dusty Tuckness – Bullfighter
They say the Wrangler NFR gets in your blood. After five consecutive years
(2009-2013) in the Thomas & Mack Center, Dusty Tuckness is thoroughly infected
with NFR fever.
“One of my goals since I was a kid has always been to go to the Finals, and
another is to beat the records of other bullfighters who have gone there. To go
once is an achievement, but to go 12 times like Darrell Diefenbach or 14 times
like Joe Baumgartner (13 consecutive, 14 overall), that’s the ultimate goal. I want
to push forward and get myself into their category.”
But Tuckness is driven by more than competitive fire.
“I try to be as consistent as I can, do my job day in and day out, and hope
that will lead to a good outcome at the end of the year. Every year I get to go
back, it means I’ve been consistent and the bull riders trust me and want to see me in the arena, so to
keep going back is a real honor.”
Tuckness got a little more beaten up than usual at the 2012 NFR (“hooked around a little in the first
two rounds and knocked out in the ninth round,” he says matter-of-factly), but it’s all part of the sport
as far as he’s concerned.
“Rodeo is a game where there’s not a set pattern,” says the former high school football standout.
“When guys are riding for world championships, they tend to hang on a little longer, and that can put
them in a more hazardous spot when they hit the ground. And some of the new bulls had some hook
to them. But I always go in thinking that every bull is the meanest one around, because I want to be on
guard and always ready to take the shot for the cowboy if needed. I felt like we all did a good job of that
this year – we step up our game at the NFR. Getting to go back is a dream come true.”
Cody Webster – Bullfighter
Cody Webster joined the PRCA in February 2011 and was selected by PRCA
bull riders to work the sport’s “Super Bowl,” the Wrangler NFR, less than two
years later – a huge honor.
“I used to watch the NFR in diapers, with my folks,” Webster said. “I’ve been
dreaming about working it all my life, so it really was a dream come true. It was
everything I thought it would feel like, but walking down that alley … you’ve got
to times it by 100 to get close to what it really feels like. It’s very heart-touching.”
Webster thinks that at age 21, he was the youngest bullfighter ever to work
the Wrangler NFR.
“It was cool to go in there and show everybody what the young guys can
do,” he said. “It was overwhelming with the first few bulls, but after that I just did what I’ve been doing
all year – fighting bulls mentally correctly. With 18,000 people watching you, you don’t want to mess up.”
Of course, that’s not the only unusual aspect of working that particular rodeo. Webster liked the
arena size, as well.
“Those aren’t the tightest quarters I’ve worked – I’ve worked some arenas that aren’t much bigger
than a living room,” he said. “The (Thomas & Mack Center arena) is the perfect size, to me. It’s small
enough that the situation won’t run away from you, which is good because those bulls are on their game.”
And best of all, he got to work with good friends.
“I’ve known Dusty for many years, long before I got my pro card, and he lives with me now,” said
Webster. “And Aaron is a good friend too. I’ve known John (Harrison) since my first ProRodeo; he kind of
took me under his wing, let me change in his trailer. Working with those guys is another dream come true.”

No wonder his voice mail plays “Ramblin’ Man” – Aaron Ferguson didn’t??
get home to High River, Alberta, until three months after the 2013 Wrangler
NFR. And it wasn’t exactly the same anyway – his family lost two homes in the
floods of June 2013.
But home is home, and Ferguson was looking forward to being there, even
though the thrill of being the second Canadian to work the Wrangler NFR – the
first was Ryan Byrne in 1986 – hadn’t quite worn off yet.
“There’s a lot of energy,” Ferguson said. “You just have to take a step back
and remind yourself that it doesn’t matter what color the bucking chutes are
or what city you’re in, you’re there to do the same job.
“You ground yourself before you walk out there, and you’re ready to go.
Bullfighting is like any other sport; there’s a right way and a wrong way to do everything. The three of us
all work the same basic system of fundamentals, so we can step in at any time in rotation and it should
have some flow to it. The people that have fought bulls through the years figured out the most effective
ways to keep cowboys safe, and most guys in the PRCA work that way, so we can go town to town and
work with different guys all the time.”
At the 2013 Wrangler NFR, Ferguson said, “It took a couple of perfs to settle in, but as the first week
went on, we felt more at home. I got bumped a few times, Dusty and Webster got hooked once each,
but we only got knocked off our feet a couple of times. We

glad it went as well as it did, and I’m proud of the job that my partners and I did together.”
John Harrison – Barrelman
If a relentlessly upbeat guy like John Harrison could possibly have a regret
about his first appearance at the Wrangler NFR as a barrelman, it would be this:
he only got knocked over once.
“If I could have gotten hit every perf, I would have – it makes me feel like I’m
more involved, like I was in the right spot,” said Harrison. “I don’t need to go end
over end, but a bump makes you feel like you did something to help somebody.”
And that’s one of the big differences between Harrison’s three previous NFR
gigs – all as an opening act – and his 2013 appearance.
“I take pride in getting in the barrel and trying to help the cowboy,” Harrison
said. “It’s an honor. It’s cool to get voted on by your peers to go in there. But
there’s a lot of pressure, because you don’t want to mess up, or pull a bull out
of a spin. There are 30 other barrelmen watching every move you make.
“But it is the best seat in the house, and there were three outstanding bullfighters.”
Harrison had to make a few adjustments to the unique aspects of the Wrangler NFR.
“I’m used to talking to the announcer, so I kept reaching down my shirt to turn my mike on. And I’m a
high-energy guy, so I usually get out of the barrel and run around after the ride. (At the NFR,) they don’t
want you to move your barrel that much, or come out. A couple of times, I really had to restrain myself.
“Every rodeo has its challenges, and that’s just one of the ones there. A lot of people say it’s just
another rodeo, but it’s not. Partly, it’s because of who’s in the audience – a few thousand people would
notice if you messed up. Sure, I was nervous, but I get nervous before every performance. That’s because
I want perfection, every time.
“And this time, I knew it was important – because my wife ironed all my shirts!”

and Barrelmen
Contestants and judges aren’t the only people in the rodeo arena. During roughstock events, there
may be bullfighters, clowns and/or a barrelman, as well. All of these rodeo participants are card-holding
members of the PRCA who have been recommended by leaders in their categories and approved by
the PRCA based on their performance.
Bullfighters are rodeo athletes whose job is to protect bull riders after they dismount or are bucked
off the bulls. Bullfighters move toward the bull immediately to distract it with sound, movement and
sometimes touch, in order to direct its attention away from the cowboy and toward the exit gate.
Bullfighters often throw their bodies between the bull and rider, and may take a hooking (a “punch”
from the bull’s horns) so the bull rider doesn’t have to.
Clowns are not responsible for cowboy protection; they are entertainers who keep the audience
engaged during breaks in the rodeo. Many visit with audiences before the rodeo, and some perform
public relations functions in local communities before and during the rodeo.
Barrelmen work in both areas – they entertain the audience, often by interacting comically with
the rodeo announcers, and they help with bull rider protection. The barrelman places his barrel where
it may give the bull an alternate target after the bull ride. He may jump in and out of it as needed, or
position it so the cowboy or bullfighters can use it as cover.
All three categories of personnel are considered integral to rodeo and are part of every PRCAsanctioned rodeo.
