bullfighters, clowns and barrelmen - ProRodeo
BULLFIGHTERS,
CLOWNS AND
BARRELMEN
Dusty Tuckness won his third consecutive Bullfighter of the Year
Award in 2012, as well as the honor of being selected by bull riders to
make his fourth consecutive appearance at the Wrangler NFR.

Darrell Diefenbach – Bullfighter
Darrell Diefenbach has put more on the line for the Wrangler NFR than
many. He immigrated to the U.S. from Australia, where he rode bulls and broncs,
fought bulls, read the ProRodeo Sports News and hankered to get his own PRCA
membership. And he watched lots of NFR videos, telling himself after he got to
America, “If I don’t make the Finals in five years, I’ll go home.”
No worries, mate. Three years after coming to America, Diefenbach achieved
his goal in 2001, and he’s been selected every year since then – 12 consecutive
times. But due to the hazards of his chosen profession, he sat home in 2006 and
2008 with a broken neck and a broken leg, respectively … and that’s not all.
“It broke my heart,” he said. “You go all year with that goal. To sit home is hard
when you put as much into it as I do.
“But when I’m there in the (Thomas & Mack) alley stretching, and I hear (announcer) Bob Tallman
getting the crowd pumped up and cheering, just like on the old NFR tapes I used to watch, that gets
my motor running. And when I step into the arena, nothing else matters except taking care of the guys.
To be selected by your peers to protect them at the Finals, it’s an honor – it’s worth all the bumps and
bruises and hookings and getting run over. If you love something enough, then you give everything
you’ve got, and I love protecting bull riders.
“Going to the NFR still means as much to be as it did the first time. If anything, it has more shine. I
have the second-highest number of consecutive selections after Joe Baumgartner, who had 13, and I’m
proud that I’ve been tough enough to do that, to get beaten up all season and stay dedicated enough
to make the sacrifices I make to take care of the guys.”
Diefenbach recently achieved a new goal: American citizenship. As a dual American-Australian
citizen, he can visit family in Australia any time without visa worries. But more importantly, he knows
he can stay here.
“I had my interview, took an American history test, and I passed my English test – probably because
they couldn’t understand me,” Diefenbach said of his accent. “I went to Portland (Ore.) for the swearingin ceremony for about 40 of us, which was pretty cool. It is a relief to know I can stay here, after I’ve put
so much into it. I have two places here; this is my home, and now I can finally call America my home.”
Dusty Tuckness – Bullfighter
They say the Wrangler NFR gets in your blood. After four consecutive years
(2009-2012) in the Thomas & Mack Center, Dusty Tuckness is thoroughly infected
with NFR fever.
“One of my goals since I was a kid has always been to go to the Finals, and
another is to beat the records of other bullfighters who have gone there. To go
once is an achievement, but to go 12 times like Darrell Diefenbach or 14 times
like Joe Baumgartner (13 consecutive, 14 overall), that’s the ultimate goal. I want
to push forward and get myself into their category.”
But Tuckness is driven by more than competitive fire.
“I try to be as consistent as I can, do my job day in and day out, and hope
that will lead to a good outcome at the end of the year. Every year I get to go
back, it means I’ve been consistent and the bull riders trust me and want to see me in the arena, so to
keep going back is a real honor.”
Tuckness got a little more beaten up than usual at the 2012 NFR (“hooked around a little in the first
two rounds and knocked out in the ninth round,” he says matter-of-factly), but it’s all part of the sport
as far as he’s concerned.
“Rodeo is a game where there’s not a set pattern,” says the former high school football standout.
“When guys are riding for world championships, they tend to hang on a little longer, and that can put
them in a more hazardous spot when they hit the ground. And some of the new bulls had some hook
to them. But I always go in thinking that every bull is the meanest one around, because I want to be on
guard and always ready to take the shot for the cowboy if needed. I felt like we all did a good job of that
this year – we step up our game at the NFR. Getting to go back is a dream come true.”

BULLFIGHTERS, CLOWNS AND BARRELMEN
2012 Wrangler NFR Personnel
The biggest difference between working your first and second NFRs? It’s
the nerves, according to 17-year PRCA bullfighter Kelly Jennings, who went in
2008 and again in 2012.
“The first time, you’re pretty star-struck – not afraid, but full of adrenaline,”
Jennings says. “This time, it was not as nerve-wracking. We’ve seen all those
riders for years so we know how they ride, and we’ve seen all those bulls several
times each. We just went in there and did what we had to do – what the cowboys
voted us in there to do. Everybody’s on the same page; it’s an anticipation game.
We’ve got the best seat in the house. We watch and wait – watch the bull buck
until it’s time to go to work, or until we see a wreck about to happen, like when
a guy gets hung up (his riding hand caught in the bull rope) or strung out (arm
extended and body untucked, allowing the bull to whip him around) so he can’t catch up. As soon as
the whistle blows or he gets bucked off, we step in to help.
“Anybody who buys their PRCA card, that’s what they strive for. Other athletes make it to the NFR
on the dollars they earn, but our peers select us, so that’s even more of an honor – that the top 20 bull
riders want you in the arena when they’re out there. That’s a hell of a slap on the back.”
J.J. Harrison – Barrelman
The word “entertain” comes up a lot in J. J. Harrison’s conversation. So does
“bounce,” and “fun,” and “laugh.”
“We’re in the entertainment business,” says Harrison, “but unlike TV, we work
live in every performance, and we have to hit a home run every time.”
In fact, Harrison works without any safety net – he doesn’t use scripted
acts, relying instead on his ability to read an audience and adjust his clowning
on the fly.
“I’ve always been a natural entertainer – I’ve always wanted people to feel
comfortable when I walk into a room,” he says. “I believe that spur-of-the-moment
is the best form of comedy. But to do that, you have to constantly be thinking
of the next thing you can say that will be funny and intriguing to the audience.
And you have to keep moving – I don’t want a 5-year-old to see me just sitting on the fence.”
Harrison also has a reflective side. Among his goals are raising the professionalism of the rodeo
clown and helping to entertain new rodeo-goers so they turn into repeat ticket-buyers and fans. “We
can’t rely on our agricultural heritage as our only fan base,” Harrison says. “We have to bring new fans
on board, and clowns are a key component of that because everyone understands fun. And if they have
fun, they’ll come back and buy another ticket.”
While those are ongoing goals, he achieved a more concrete one in 2012: being selected to work
the Wrangler NFR.
“The NFR is minute-by-minute, and working it was awesome. (General Manager) Shawn Davis runs a
tight ship and he wants a team in which everyone puts their pieces of professionalism together. Getting
to be part of the NFR was the biggest honor of my career, and I’d like to share that with everyone who
helped me get there. Nobody achieves their goals alone, and in our industry, feedback is crucial, whether
it’s from committees, announcers or someone in the audience who says you’re the best clown ever. That
makes me want to continue to work as hard as I can.”

BULLFIGHTERS, CLOWNS AND BARRELMEN
Kelly Jennings – Bullfighter
PRCA Bullfighters, Clowns
and Barrelmen
Contestants and judges aren’t the only people in the rodeo arena. During roughstock events, there
may be bullfighters, clowns and/or a barrelman, as well. All of these rodeo participants are card-holding
members of the PRCA who have been recommended by leaders in their categories and approved by
the PRCA based on their performance.
Bullfighters are rodeo athletes whose job is to protect bull riders after they dismount or are bucked
off the bulls. Bullfighters move toward the bull immediately to distract it with sound, movement and
sometimes touch, in order to direct its attention away from the cowboy and toward the exit gate.
Bullfighters often throw their bodies between the bull and rider, and may take a hooking (a “punch”
from the bull’s horns) so the bull rider doesn’t have to.
Clowns are not responsible for cowboy protection; they are entertainers who keep the audience
engaged during breaks in the rodeo. Many visit with audiences before the rodeo, and some perform
public relations functions in local communities before and during the rodeo.
Barrelmen work in both areas – they entertain the audience, often by interacting comically with
the rodeo announcers, and they help with bull rider protection. The barrelman places his barrel where
it may give the bull an alternate target after the bull ride. He may jump in and out of it as needed, or
position it so the cowboy or bullfighters can use it as cover.
All three categories of personnel are considered integral to rodeo and are part of every PRCAsanctioned rodeo.
This list includes insured PRCA-member bullfighters, clowns and barrelmen as of Feb. 15, 2013
(and inductees into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame), and describes much, but not necessarily all, of their
experience in the PRCA and some allied organizations.
