St. Louise de Marillac is a Roman Catholic community called together as family to worship, to
minister, and to evangelize. As true disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to renew His love and
spirit by sharing our time, talent and treasure.

Summer me
Summer me is upon us and I want to wish everyone a blessed summer. Most
of us have good memories of summers past. When I was young, there was no
technology to take up my me, so summer was about ge ng together with
friends, family ou ngs, picnics and sports. Play was a big part of summer!
Play allows children to use their crea vity while developing their imagina on, dexterity, and physical,
cogni ve, and emo onal strength. Play is important to healthy brain development. It is through play that
children at a very early age engage and interact in the world around them, but play should not end when one
grows up. If you look at the word recrea on it is the same as re-crea on, a me where we are recreated and
refreshed. It gives our bodies and minds a well-deserved rest from our normal daily chores. As adults, we
too need me to play.
Technology has affected the way in which we relate to one
another. I’m not sugges ng that this is all bad, but many of us
have become addicted to our smart phones and tablets. We have
so much entertainment available through the internet, we could
spend every waking moment amusing ourselves using our devices.
Psychologists are now talking about a problem many people are
developing, FOMO, Fear of Missing Out, whenever you are not
connected to your device. So, I have some sugges ons for your
summer.
Spend me with your spouse, friends and children with all
technology turned off. Get outside and enjoy the longer day me
hours. Early evening walks around your neighborhood both allow you to talk to your walking partner, but
are good for your health as well! Take the kids, the dog, neighbors with you. Leave the smart phone at
home. Turn all devices off while you eat dinner. Talk to your family. It will be be er for your diges on, as
well as help you build be er rela onships with your family members. Help your children learn how to use
their smart phones in a sensible way – but first – you have to model the behavior you want them to mimic.
Get together with friends. It could be a backyard BBQ or an evening at a restaurant.
When we kindle our rela onships, we grow. As we grow in our rela onships with each other, it becomes
easier to grow in our rela onship with God. Remember that Jesus told us that we are to love one another as
He loves us. So get out there and show your love of neighbor and family.

As we con nue to celebrate who we are as Catholics and
as people of faith during this Year of Faith, we recognize
that we are an Immigrant Church and take seriously the
Gospel call to welcome the stranger among us. We, the
Church of Los Angeles, are mindful that we are a Church
of many peoples, with different backgrounds, different
stories, and different family histories. Each of us is unique,
but our Catholic faith teaches us that we are all made in
the image of God—imago Dei.
In Celebra on of our immigrant roots as a Church and as a
na on, we will celebrate a special Mass in recogni on of
all immigrants and in support of comprehensive
immigra on reform that is just and compassionate.

PRAY FOR THE SICK
RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY—Father Joseph McShane, Moderator
Please pray for those listed below who
are sick:
The Respect Life Ministry has a new moderator, Fr. Joseph McShane.
Fr. McShane is looking forward to the reboo ng of this very important ministry
by which our parish may con nue to contribute to a renewal within society of
the dignity and worth of every person in the family of God from the moment of
concep on to life’s natural end.
These issues are becoming ever more urgent to address as the dignity of
human life con nues to be a acked and confronted with a lack of respect and
awareness of the sacredness of human as created and willed by God. Last
summer the Clarion Herald ran a piece by Bishop Robert Barron who stated on
this ma er that “the forge ulness of the dignity of the human being that is on
ever clearer display in our Western culture” and the resul ng escala on of
violence so o en in the news recently. Bishop Barron notes, “What makes this
sort of startling violence against human beings possible, I would submit, is the
a enua on of our sense of God’s existence. In the classical Western
perspec ve, the dignity of the human person is a consequence and func on of
his or her status as a creature of God. Precisely because the human being is
made in the image and likeness of the Creator and des ned, finally, for eternal
life on high with God, he is a subject of inalienable rights. It is the aspira on of
St. Louise de Marillac Respect Life Ministry, that through prayer and the
Dignitas Workshops which they organize and promote, our society will quickly
rediscover this essen al truth!
Respect Life encompasses numerous categories by which the dignity of human
life is being a acked. Our commi ee will meet once a month to address these
issues and to organize the Dignitas Workshops which are open to the general
public and have guest speakers proficient in Respect Life issues.
I am hoping many may be inspired to par cipate in this important ministry, for
we cannot remain silent or inac ve in an area that is destroying the dignity of
untold numbers and may one day even include our own.
Please join me for our mee ng which will be held the fourth Monday of each
month at 7:30 PM. We will have our first session of Respect Life on Monday,
August 22nd at 7:30 PM in the St. Louise Conference Room. I look forward to
your assistance and par cipa on as well as your prayers for the success of this
mission! All are welcome!

DID YOU KNOW?
Constant vigilance goes a long way to protect your
children from predators
So much of our society operates on blind trust, and that
trust can sometimes lead parents to make the wrong
choices when it comes to the safety of their children. Far
too many predators and abusers hide behind the
well-known and trusted adults. Parents should be vigilant
when introducing anyone into their children’s’ lives, and
should not ignore any red flags or suspicious behavior. It’s
better to investigate than to misplace your trust at the
expense of your child’s safety. For a copy of the
