needed some coaxing, I asked to borrow some of his "Go Fast'Z.
He, noting the yellow ribbon tied to my batten, said, "Sure,
take the whole can. I know how it is to be in'C' fleet." I thanked
him and now being somewhat depressed by the nature of his
remark. lubricated the valve stem and inserted it solidlyintothe
opening.
By this time we were the last of the boats which were racing to
still be on thebeach. Mywife struggled with her wet suit, andat
long last we were ready to shove off. The psychological "coupe
de gras" came as we struggled to get the boat to the water, as the
tide had ebbed somewhat. One of the dogs running loose on the
beach decided to annoint the starboard hull. Intuition told me
that if there was ever a time to sit it out on the beach and drink
beer, thiswasit. But no, Ithought, Tomhad spentthebetterpart
of the week re-cutting my sails and we must presson, regardless.
•By day's end, we had taken a first, second and a third-onlyto
miss first place overall by 42 point. Thus, second place was ours
and our first sailing victory is nowproudly displayed in ourden.
We shall remember this day when we are confronted with
similar circumstance... and thumb our noses forthwith.

Electrical Power Lines Strike Again!
This past year there has been much publicity regarding the
dangers of an aluminum mast coming in contact with electrical
power lines. The Hot Line has done a good job of informing
Hobie sailors about this, but I would like to relate my own
experience whichhappenedlast Spring. Hopefully, it willhelpto
impress upon others-especially those who believe it won't ever
happen to them- the fact that it CAN... and all too easily, too.
I had been out sailing my Hobie Cat and was working upwind
to a commercial motor boat dock, intent on avoiding moored
boats at buoy. Suddenly I heard a loud "CRACK" that sounded
like a high-powered rifle going off, and before I realized what
had happened, Ihadhotaluminum rainingdownonme, followed
by the sail. Luckily, I wasn't touching anything metal on the boat
and thus escapedpersonalinjury andpossiblydeath. Later, after
a frightening look at the fifty-cent-piece-size hole in my mast, I
discovered what had happened. The lake had been at a much
higherwater level than "normal". causing the dockoperationsto
be moved back underpowerlinesthat were "normally"hundreds
of yards from the water.
I am a cautious sailor and "normally" would have avoided
gettingmyselfintosuchadangeroussituation. But, as Icertainly
found out, there is no such thing as a "normal" accident.

Late in January of this year, my wife and I were invited by Tom
Eckjes of Fleet #4 to race in the second of their three-rlice winter
series. We live in the San Fernando Valley, and the prospect of a
warm weekend made this the ideal time to check out the local
sailing conditions.
We arrived at about 8:45 and proceded to have a cup of coffee
and somebreakfast while waiting fortherest ofthe fleettoshow
up. When the race committee says there's a skippers meeting at
9:45, you just know that it won't get off the ground till 11:00.
Nope-meeting at 10 and race at 10:30! We set our coffee down
and began frantically to rig the boat. Finally. the last thing left to
do was put in the hull plugs. Only one was to be found!! Since it
was after 10, there was no time to ask around; and since the
probability of finding one seemed remote, we searched the truck
again. At last I spotted a black object of similar proportions. It
was a tubeless tire valve stem, and as desperate a situation as
this was, we gave it a try.
Now, the guy next to me on the beach was in 'A' fleet and he
was busy spraying WD-40 on his fittings, and as the valve stem

ENTHUSIASTIC
CANADIANS
Dear Ed:
In the past we have read about our
friendly rival from the Toronto area,
Reg jaworski. The fact that a
Canadian ventured far into the
States to compete in a major Hobie
regatta was judged newsworthy of
editorial comment.
Well, you have written about Reg,
but you have forgotten the Ieans.
Yes, the unknown"Jeans" of Quebec,
Canada. Jean Marc Bernard, Jean
Paul Larch, Jean Lalumierand Andre
Pilon (how did an Andre sneek in?)
drove 23 hours nonstop to enter two
Hobie 16's in the'75 Hobie 16 National Championshipsin South Carolina.
Jean Marc, with only two regattas
under his belt, placed a veryrespectful 5th in C fleet. The group presented Hobie Alter with gold Olympic pins and an Olympic flag at the
awards presentation.
Jean Iall three of them} returned to
frigid Quebec bubbling with enthusiasm for Hobte Class racing. They
formed Fleet #187 and are very
active in organizing Hobie Cat races
on the shores of Lake Champlain.
Their interest was all brought about
by an unforgettable week spent
racing with other Hobie skippers.
I believe their actions and efforts
should be acknowledged.
Ron Lemish
Hobie Dealer
Montreal, Quebec
P.S. The Hobie skippers from Montrealmade many friendsat the Hobie
16 Nationals. Some Californians are
coming up to theMontred Olympics
this summer and will be staying at
Bay Missisquoi, Lake Champlain.
There they willbeableto use some of
Fleet #1879 20 Hobie Cat 16's. Any
Hobie skippers who are on vacation
or coming up to the Olympics and
want a place to beach their boat and
sail with other Hobies, please contact Ron Lemish (514) 744-0770,
DEAR RON:
Thanks to people like yourself, the
"Jeans", the Jaworskls and the many
other Canadian Hoble enthusiasts,
the Hoble Cat population In Canada
is growing largerevery day. With well
over 30,000 Hoble skippers In the
world, It's often hard to acknowledge
Individually the vast number of
people who have done so much to
help promote the Hobie Way of Life,
so l appreciate yourtaking the time to
write and give credit where credit
Is due. Keep up the Hoble stokeand thanks for the Invitation to
visit Canada and Fleet #1871

HULL LEAKAGE
Dear Ed:
I have a problem with my hulls.
When I capsize and/or turtle, my
Hobie 14 is almost impossible to
right. Also, when I get it up it rides
very low in the water. signifying
water in the hulls. When 1 pull the
plugs on the beach. gallons of water
come streaming out. The plugs are
new, and I've inspected the hulls for
holes and there are none. Can you
give me any advice?
Also, what is the best way to keep
hulls looking bright and new? I love
your magazine and I would like to
see more photography.
Thanks for your time and keep up
the good work.
Sincerely,
Michael Austin Dunn
Salt Lake City, Utah
DEAR MICHAEL:
There are a number of possible
leaking points you should check.
If you've already checked the hulls
thoroughly for holes, the next
step is to Inspect all the
through-hull fittings. You may want
to lake off the gudgeons and bow
langs and re-seal them with a good
marine sealant. You should then
check and apply sealant to the
areas where the pylons enter
the hull, and the hole In the lange
where the rudder pin goes through
thedeck. Itwouldalsobeagoodldea
to take the hulls off the frame
and Inspect the condition of the
foam pylon plugs. If they have
shrunk, you should either replace
them or use sealant around their
sides.
The best way to keep your hulls
bright and new Is to keep them
covered when not in use. A regular
coating of boat wax helps too, but be
sure to keep It out of the non-skid
areas. The article on page 17 of this
Issue, "Keep That Flberglass Boat
Looking New", explains why hulls
can become dull and laded If not
properly cared for and what you can
do to prevent this.
Ed
A WHALE OF
A TALE
Dear Ed:
You may not believe this, but our
Hobie 16 was rammedbyawhale.
While sailing inside the breakwater
of Los Angeles Harbor, about 300
yards off Cabrillo Beach, my crew
and I spotten an idle Hobie 14. We
went over to see what was happening when alI of a sudden something
spouted between the hulls of the 14.
We stuck around... About five minutes later my crew said, "Hey! Look
down therel"; and to my amazement,
a 20-foot grey whale surfaced off the
starboard hull-RIGHT off the starboard hull!! We followed him (her?)
for a little ways, but turned back,
with mixed emotions, as it got dark.
Although I am new to the Hobie
scene and am sure this must have
been one of those once-in-a-lifetime
things, I'd still like to warn any other
unsuspecting sailors who happen to
be in the area of Cabrillo Beach:
BEWARE OF WHALES!

South Africa - Home of Baboons
T
everything was finalized and our mp was set.
We staned off from California, going first to the U.5.14' Nationals in
Traverse City, Michigan. After finishing up there, we headed to New
YoA for an overnight stay and then emba• ed on a 19-hour flight to
Johannesburg. Our itinerary was set up so that we would have an
opportunity to meet as many Hobie skippers and dealers as possible
during our travels through South Africa.
When we landed in Johannesburg wewere met by Borii the local
Hobie dealer. Leaving customs, Wayne and I were pleasantly
surprised by the barrage of photographers and press agents that
surrounded us, thinking they really shouldn't have gone to all that
Late last September, Wayne Schafer and I had the pleasure of
taking a three-week ffip through South Africa. It's a visit we will long
remember, and we owe a greatdeal of thanks to Coast Cotamaran
South Africa and Seven Seas Cane Spirits for making it all possible.
We'd been asked on numerous occasions by John Whitmore, an old
friend of ours, and the SouthAfrican HobieCatmanufacturer, tocome
down for their National regama, but as much aswewould have liked
to go, we didn'tihinkirpossible. Then, aboutsixmonths later, wegoto
letter from John saying that he and Seven Seas, sponsor of their
National event, would help foot the bill to get us down there. We
could hardly refuse, and in the time it took us to pack our suitcase,

trouble. It was Boris who broke the spell when. stifling a grin, he
explained that Liz Taylorand Richard Burton were expected in on the
next flight. Oh well... we didn't really think it was just for us!
Boris gave us a quid< tour of the area, let us rest up for half on hour,
and then swept us off to a cocktail party sponsored by Seven Seas.
Although we were supposed to be suffering from the perils ofjet lag,
meeting the local Hobie sailors that night was like running into old
friends and Wayne and I both spent a very enjoyable evening. We
learned that sailing in the Johannesburg area is done on lakes and
generally the airs are very light. Occasionally the Johannesburg
skippers drive to Durban ( abouta day'sdrive awayon theeastcoast)
where theycan usuallyget in some good heavyweathersailing and
a little Hobie Cat surfing.
After thanking everyone for the warm hospitality shown us, we
hopped on a plane and headed for Durban. There, the weather is
warm and tropical with generally consistent winds. There are also
some excellent surfing spots in this area. We spent a couple of days
touring the area, which induded a mp up into Zulu Land, a very
picturesque and historical part of South Africa. During our stay in
Durban, the Natal Hobie Association, along with Seven Seas, gave a
dinner and party in our honor at the Holiday Inn downtown. I'rn sure
no one had ever made such a fuss over a couple of visiting tourists

before, and by this time both Wayne and l were beginning to feel a
little like royalty on the Grand Tour. But the coupe de resistance was
yet to come... as we drove up to the hotel. there on the marquisflashing in brilliant neon lights-we saw'WELCOME SANDYGWAYNE
TO 50UTH AFRICA". It was too much!
The next day we hitched a ride to East London with a few of the
Hobie skippers we'd met in Durban. Heading south, we traveled
inland for a while, going through very beautiful country made
available by the government for native farming. Unfortunately the
trip to East London took a little longer than we had anticipated, and
we missed meeting with the local Hobie group there.
After a good nights sleep, our Durban friends headed for Port
Elizabeth to compete ina tune-up race prior to the Nationals. Wayne
and I stayed behindwithourhost, Bobbyloubert, the Hobiedealer, to
see the East London area and also To warch our first Rugby Matdi,
which, incidentally, Bobby was playing in. (The game is about as
rough as American football. but the players don'twearany padding
at all. According to Bobby, by the end of a game they ore quite
"banged up".) Uke Durban, East London is another beautiful spot,
with warm weather and water. There are miles of white sandy
beaches and lots of good surfing spots.

After our stay in East Londonwe set ourwith Bobby Joubertfor Port
Elizabeth. The trip was very interesting, especially with Bobby telling
storiesthewholewaydown. Alongthewaywehadonopponunityro
stop and look at some of the native huts. The families we met were
delightfully friendly and they immediately welcomed us into their
homes. These are made out of straw and clay. but even so, they are
very deanandwell keprup.Thenativesdotheircooking andgertheir
wormth from a small fire that's built into the center of the main room.
Some of the huts have two or three additional huts, which connea to
the main one, for sleeping and eating.
When we amved in Port Elizabeth we found it to be a bir different
from East London in that it's a considerably larger town, with a lot
more indusizy. We regretted nor being able to stay longer in Port
Elizabeth as we met many really near Hobie people there, burwe
were running late and hadyetto make the drive to Plettenberg Bay,
sight of the South African Nationals.
The Kip from Port Elizabeth to Plettenberg is considered the Garden
Route, and ifs easy to see why. It is an extremely beautiful drive that
takeyouthroughmountainswith tremendousamountsof greenery,
and forests with dazzling waterfalls. Along this route is Jeffries Bay, or
Cape St. Francis. the well-known surfing spot from the movie, 'The
Endless Summer".
Aniving ot Plettenberg, we came down off of a mountain to the
bay, which stretches for miles and miles. The community around Plen
( as the locals call it) is built ona hillside dropping down to the beach.
Thiswas the sightoftheSouthAfrican Nationals, wherewemetupwith
John Whitmore and his family. The host hotel was the Beacon Isle.
situated ona point so that every room had a view up or down the
coast. Although some of our South African friends thought the prices
were high atthishorel,wehadrodisagree...518.OOadayboughtyou
notonlyaroom, but included a breakfast, a lunch, and an all-you-caneat dinner of a variety of delicious foods.
On top of the beautiful location which had been picked, the
Nationals were well-planned and had all the makings of a perfea
regatta. But,.as con happen anywhere, we were plagued with three
days of exKemely strong winds, and one light-air day. Although the
weather could have been better, four races were run and the
champions declared.
After the Nationals, wejoined John \Whitmore and continued south
to CapeTown, aboutan 8-hourdrive.Alongthewaywepassedmany
ostrich farms, and although itwas no big deal to John, Wayne and Ijust
couldn't get used to seeing a wild ostrich run across the road! Some
interestingsignssuch as "DANGER-ELEPHANTS"and"DONOTFEEDTHE
BABOONS" were a bit of a surprise, too!
Cope Town is probably one of the most beautiful cities I've ever
seen. On onesideyou have the Allantic, where the water isquitecold,
and on the other side is the Indian Ocean, where thewater is at least
15 degrees warmer. lhe climate in this area is similar to what we're
used to in Southern California. \Fe spenta day sightseeing and drove
down to the tip of South Africa, the Cape of Good Hope, where the
Indian and the Allontic oceans meet. Arone point along the way we
saw a family of baboons-about 12 or 15 of them-from an old
grandfather down to the babies. You're not allowed to feed them,
andshouldn't get our of your car as they can be dangerous, burwe
sure enjoyed watching them.
One of the highlights of Cape Town is Table Mountain, accessible
onlybyhikingup(noway!)orbytakingthecablecar(moremystyle).
If you're ar all afraid of heights, the ren-minute ridegoing up thesheer
face of this mountain could reallydo you in (Ijusr barelysurvived the
ordeal), but once you've seen the spectacular views from the rop, it
seems well worth it.
After giving John a few days to get caught up on business-while
we roamed around feasting ourselves on such delicacies as monkey
gland steaks, king dip fish, osmch egg (one egg alone weighs o
whopping 4 to 5 pounds and can feed a dozen people), and other
heretofore unknown delights-we headed up the west coast to
John's farm. Stopping along the way, we saw fantastic sailing spots
where the wind blows 20 to 00 mph and the chop never gets over
one or two feet, surfing spots thararetorally uninhabited, andmilesof
white sandy beach. At John's farm, or within a few minutes of ir, there
were so manythings to do and see that we couldn'r even begin to fit
them all inro the few days we had. Things such as surfing, sailing,
dMng, hunting, fishing, motorcycle riding, taking walks on deserted
beaches, conoe rides in the lagoon, or just working on the farm. The
conditions were excellent for all these sports.
After three days arJohn'sfarmwe reluctantlyheaded back to Cape
Town for our trip home. I could go on and on about how impressed
we were with South Africa and especially the people. Everyone we
met, withoutexceprion, wenroutof theirwaytoshowusa goodtime.
They opened up their homes To us and made us feel like parr ofthe
family. South Africa is truely a wonderful country.

MAST RAKE-
THE HOW'S
& WHY'S
V
V
35
AD
By Steve Edmonds · Member, Hobie Fleet #34
Edmonds Sails · Riviera Beach, Florida
14-
Racing the Hobie Cat successfully is a sport of skill, there is no
question about that. The top skippers almost always come out
ahead. But the top skippers are the best not only because they sail
the best race, but also because they know how to trim their boat for
maximum speed. Obviously there are things that you can do to
your boat to make it go faster. The top boats in your area always
seem to be going much faster than you, right? Actually, they are
only one or two percent faster than you in absolute boat speed, and i
a lot of this is how the boat is set up and how the sails are trimmed.
What gives the appearance of theirmuch greater speed advantage
is the interaction that one boat has ofi anothen This is particularly
true when sailing to windward. The boat that is just one percent
faster or points higher can get the slightly slower boat trapped in
the dirty air off of his sail. The difference in the speed between the
two boats is then multiplied many times.
Mast rake is one of those boat trim variables that can make a
difference in boat speed of one percent when sailing to windward.
To understand why this is true, it is necessary to look at the
aerodynamics and hydrodynamics of lifting bodies. The sail, hulls
and rudders on the boat are like the wings on an airplane They
produce a force perpendicular to the apparent wind or water
direction, which is called the lift force. The lift force on the sail is
counterbalanced by a resistance force in the water produced by
the hulls and rudders.

DIAGRAM 1
DIAGRAM 2
Bodies that produce lift also produce an extra drag force (drag is
just what the name implies, it's a force in the direction opposite to
where you want to go that slows you down). This is called liftinduged drag. or just induced drag. It is caused by air or water
trying to take a short cut around the end of the lifting body. This
produces a vortex, like a tornado, that increases the drag. (See
Diagram #1 )
The magnitude of this drag force is directly related to the shape
(aspect ratio) of the body. Tall, skinny shapes, like the sail and
rudders on the Hobie, are high aspect ratio and have low induced
drag. Short fat shapes, like the hulls, are low aspect ratio and have
high induced drag.
89 raking the mast back (moving the tip toward the stem) some of
the resistance force pxduced by the hulls is shifted to the rudders.
Now, remember, the rudder produces a smaller induced drag force
for a given resistance than the hulls. Therefore, the overall drag in
the water is reduced. But. rakin6 themastback reduces the forward
thrust produced by the sail becauseof thesmallerproiected area in
thefonvarddirection. Theoptimummastrakeisonethatmaximizes
the combination of the forward thrust produced by the sail minus
the induced drag produced by. the hulls and rudders.
All of this was set up in equation form and calculations were
made for various mast rakes. The optimum mast rake for the Hobie
14 is seven degrees and for the Hobie 16 is ten degrees. These
angles should be measured with the boat in its windward sailing
trim. (See Diagram #2)
As usual, you don't get something for nothing. With the optimum
seven-degree mast rake on the Hobie 14 you havbincreased your
difficulty in tacking. Since y6u have the mast raked back, you have
greatly increased the load on the rudders during a tacking
maneuver. The rudders will be stalled as you try to bear off on the
newtackwithwindspeedsgreaterthanlOmilesperhour.Butwith
practice, the top skippers have learned how to tack under these
conditions. The Hobie 16, with its jib to aid in tacking, willnot suffer
in its tacking ability with the recommended ten degrees of mast
rake.
Raking the mast back is also good in heavy wind cohditions.
Increased mast rake reduces the forward thrust and produces a
lifting force to the hulls which reduces the tendancy to bury the lee
bow on a screaming reach.
Naturally, there are some pratical considerations to raking the
mast back. Increased mast rake shortens the distance between the
tip of the mast and the rear crossbar as well as shortening the
distance from the head of the lib on the Hobie 16 to the front
crossbar. This does not pose a problem until the distance becomes
so short that you are no longer able to sheet the main and/or iib
tight enough to provide the correct shape in the sails. Raking back
beyond this point will cause large reductions in speed since the sail
shape is the single most important variable on the boat.

Ane hundred and one members of Fleet #54
CJ gathered near Baltimore on February 7
for their annual dinner meeting.
Commodore Pat Moore called the meeting to
order and Secretary/Treasurer Rex Scaggs
presented his report on the past year's
activities. Pat then presented the
proposed slate of officers for 1976,
and it was unanimously accepted
by the members.
After dinner, Pat presented
trophies for the Fleet's Summer Series,
the Flaming Fall Regatta, and the Frostbite
Regatta. He was assisted by Rex Scaggs,
Martin Hoover and Bob Banbury,
members who had organized the regattas
and made the trophies. Pat also presented
the second annual "Sailor of the Year Award",
a perpetual trophy, to Bob Shoemaker.
This award, the Fleet's highest honor,
was donated last year by Pat and
Mary Lou Moore. The first recipient,
John Flanigan, received the trophy from
Hobie Alter last Spring.
Newly-elected Commodore Ed Plitt
took over the show for the presentation
of four new annual awards. The "Unsung
Hero Award" went to 16 crew Mary Ruck,
described by Ed as "pound for pound, the most
intrepid sailor in the Fleet". The award for
"Sailing Improvement" went to Ted Leach,
who ably represented Fleet #54 at the 16
Nationals by placing 13th. The award for
"Contribution to the Fleet" went to
Rex Scaggs, who did an extraordinary amount
of work for the Fleet in 1975, even though he is
no longer a Hobie owner. The award for
"Sportsmanship" went to Bob Banbury,
,who was recognized for his friendliness
and helpfulness toward his fellow sailors.
With the serious business concluded,
Mary Lou Moore took the floor for her annual
Fun Awards-anditis"MutinyontheBounty"
time again! Seeing that the "Special Awards
Roast" is aboutto begin, everyone heads
for the open bar and attempts to sustain
themselves in some small measure
against the agony that lies ahead.
Quickly, the following sailors are called
to front and center: Robert Ball of Baltimore,
Rob Mairs of Camp Springs, Robert Banbury
from Pasadena ( Maryland, that is),
Robert Shoemaker from College Park,
Robert Hall from Lutherville, Robert Ruck
from Nowhere, Robert Curry from
Severna Park and Robert Wagner of
Riderwood. Yes! You've got it. The "Perpetual
Bobby Award", of course. Mrs. Moore, who has
spent valuable minutes on these gorgeous
awards, cannot help but note that these sailors
trudge to the front something like a chain gang
about to receive the whip.
Never one to be deterred from her
duty by cat-calls and celery flinging through
the air, Mary Lou next calls upon Ed Turner,
Paul Hummer, Mike Kleist, Charlie Kroger,
Rich Redler and Bennie Ackerman to present

A classic example
/
of how to mix business
STOP
with pleasure ... and
SLIPPING!
a little insanity, too!
their "Hobie Hot-To-Trot Cheerleaders" act,
one that has thrilled a cast of thousands at
Wildwood; N.J., Ocean City, Md., and,
recently, a one-time appearance at a
Baltimore race riot. The sophisticated polish
of this notorious group is matched only by
something as unique as the Winter Olympics.
Exquisite single awards were presented to
Ted Leach, recipientofthe"Foul FingerofFate
Proiest" and "TheLast Can of Beer in Anyone's
Refrigerator", while tiny but gutsy Mary Ruck
received the official "Hanging Out and
Hanging In Wonder of the Year Award.".
Her hubby, Little Bobby Ruck, was so happy
and gay that he immediately burst into his
infectious rope-jumping act that has startled
onlookers at Gunpowder State Park and caused
Bob to be arrested three times by the
park rangers.
It would be unseemly to mention why
Howard Rex Scaggs The Third won a pot of
homemade bean soup... you see, Rex often wins
races when the restof the Fleet remains on shore
because the wind died.
This year, part of the audience turned
ugly and there wasa bitofa "gettingeven" tang
in the air. Up jumped handsome John Sohn,
who once cost Mary Lou two sleepless nights by
showing up at the same regatta with
John Johnson, expecting to be scored correctly.
John had hooked a fantastic Hobie rug for
Mrs. Moore, and not only was she thrilled
by this work of art, but was incredulous to
meet her first male hooker.
Patrick Moore, leaving his post as
Fleet Commodore, accepted a classy T-shirt,
initialed to designate "Federal Aviation
Research Technician".
Bartenders all over Maryland are
strong devotees of the Fleet #54 Special
Awards Event, as business is increasingly
brisk at the conclusion. However, sobbing
quietly in the corner and stroking his rubber
duck that he brings to every dinner,
sat Ed Plitt-who didn't win anyofMary Lou's
treasures, but gets to be Commodore instead!

Aquarius" set the scene for her win in the first

The second race was abandoned with "Adluarius"
leading "Nylex" by 11 minutes 32 seconds when a
savage squall, with winds gusting to 35 knots,
whipped across the course on Port Philip Bay.
("Nylex" had led at the first two marks of the
coursewhilewindswereabovelOknots, butasthey
dropped before the storm, "Aquarius" took
command.) "Nylex" won the race when it was
resailed, as Aquarius dropped out with a gear
failure.
RACE 3: "MISS NYLEX"
AQUARIUS V (lt), the soft-sail U.S. challenger, and
MISS NY LEX (rt), the wing-sail Australian defender,
fought a see-saw battle down to the final race
of the series.
1
The Little America's Cup is symbolic of supremecy
in C Class catamaran racing. Alex Kozloff, designer and
builder of the soft-sail "AquariusV", andhis22-year-old
helmsman, Robbie Harvey, took the 25-foot C Class cat
to Melbourne, Australia. early this year determined to
bring the Little America's Cup back to the U.S. for the
first time since it was dedicated 14 years ago. ( Britain
has won it eight times, Australia three and Denmark
one.) Kozloff and Harvey lived up to their slogan
"Bring It Back" in a see-saw battle with Australia's
sophisticated wing-sail catamaran, "Miss Nylex", by
winning the 4th and final race of the best-four-of-seven
series.
The event was sailed on an 11-leg course in Port
Phillip Bay near Melbourne, February 7 - 15, 1976.
"Aquarius V", possibly tbe lightest C Class cat ever
built, proved vastly superior to "Miss Nylex" in light
weather, winning one race by more than 18 minutes.
"Miss Nylex" was faster than the soft-rigged
'. Aquarius" in winds above 12 knots, but only by a
small margin. Her biggest margin in the three races she
won was only a little over four minutes at an intermediate mark.
The Australian boat led at the first mark by one
minute 34 seconds, then added another 27 seconds
by the second mark. At the ninth mark she led by
four minutes five seconds, but the wind began to
die and "Aquarius" cut the margin to two minutes
54 seconds at the finish.
Alex Kozloff ( It), designer, builder and crewman of
Aquanus F , and helmsman Robbie Harvey with the
Little America's Cup trophy.

CHALLENGE! (continued)
RACE 4: "AQUARIUS"
"Aquarius" won the 4th race by 18 minutes 49
seconds in a light wind that died to four knots near
the finish, making the series two races each.
RACE 5: "MISS NYLEX"
"Miss Nylex" won the start and led all theway in a
15- to 30-knot breeze. However, -Aquarius"
showed better heavy weather performance in this
race, and at no time did more than two minutes
separate the boats. "Miss Nylex's" margin at the
finish was only one minute 56 seconds, and most of
this was gained when "Aquarius" just failed to lay
the seventh mark and had to take an extra hitch.
RACE 6: "AQUARIUS"
The 6th race, again a light to medium one, went to
"Aquarius" by 36 seconds after a tacking duel on
the final two windward legs. The Australians
considered protesting the race because they felt it
had been started with less than the four knots of
breeze required, but did not go ahead with it.
RACE 7: "AQUARIUS"
"Aquarius" won the last race of the series, and thus
the trophy, by five minutes 23 seconds in an 8-knot
breeze. "Miss Nylex" had again led at the first mark
by 31 seconds, and by 35 seconds at the second
mark, but -Aquarius" then Went to the lead and
held a 36 second margin at the third leg. She was
never again headed.
" Aquarius V" rounding the mark.

HOTLINE / APRIL-MAY 1976
Ihe Hobie Class Association is proud to have
played a small part in the first United States victory
in the history of the Little America's Cup
Challenge. The $1000 donation which Hobie
made, and the many single contributions made by
fleets and individuals across the nation helped
"Aquirius" financially, but even more important
was the great enthusiasm with which Hobie
skippers backed the U.S. effort. In the words of
Alex Kozloff:
"The reason the United States won the
Little America's Cup Challenge was, I believe, because
we were prepared, we were organized, we practiced
(fiue hours a day for many months!), and we had the
backing Of the catamaran yachting fraternity
behind us. It is the many catamaran sailors
in our country-those in the Hobie and other
small-cat classes as well as the C Class Sailorswho helped to generate enthusiasm, and
for this both Robbie and myself thank you.
It is this same U.S. 'team' effort that witt ensure
the successful defense of the Cup in years to follow.,·

If you are about to, or have bought a fiberglass boat,
perhaps we should talk about maintenance. It's true,
fiberglass requires less maintenance than othertypes
of boat finish. Your choice of colorwill alsobe a factor,
as bright reds, greens, blues, etc. wilI tend to dull
faster. Even at that, these colors can be kept in a'like
new' condition with proper maintenance.
In the manufacturing of fiberglass boats, to achieve
the color of the boat the manufacturer first sprays into
the mold a coat of gelcoat which can be chosen from
a large range of colors. The gelcoat is applied using a
thickness of about 16 mills. The gelcoat's purpose can
be compared with the painted surface of a wood boat,
the prime purpose being to offer a selection of colors
and provide a shiny smooth surface. Even though
gelcoat dries to a harder finish than paint its drying or
curing characteristics are much the same. Gelcoat
will oxidize and fade with time like paint therefore
requiring cleaning and protection to keep that'new
look.'
You have learned fprn experience the importance
of washing your boat down with fresh water after a
day's use. This is extremely important when you are
boating in salt water. An occasional cleaning with a
mild detergent will also keep oil film, fallout and water
spots to a minimum. While this is important and
necessary, it will do little or nothing to remove the
oxidation and stains which build up with time and use
of your boat.
Before we talk about the waxing of a boat let's
continue on with the cleaning. One of the most
important things to remember about waxing or
polishing is that it must be done over a clean surface.
When we say clean, we mean more than just washed
with detergent and water. If you will recall, we
previously talked about oxidation, which is the
natural drying or curing of either gelcoat or paint. As
the finish oxidizes, the old pigment Polymers and oils
form a dull accumulation on the surface which will
require more than detergent and water to remove.
Along with this surface accumulation, the gelcoat
itself is much like your skin in that it has small pores,
holes .that accumulate oil and other foreign material
which add to the dulling and general poor
appearance of the finish.
So, then, what are we looking for in a good Marine
Cleaner-one that will remove the surface accumulations and deep clean the finish to assure long lasting

wax protection. For years, rubbing
compound was used, which is little more than a paste or liquid
sandpaper. It's true that compound will remove.the top surface or
gelcoat with the use of harsh abfasives. but it will do nothing to
deep clean the surface. Compound was formulated to be used by
painters to remove overspray and rough spots in the paint that
occurred in the automotive paint shop.
I'mgladtosaytherearepolishcompaniesthatnowmanufacture
cleaners that will clean without the use of harsh abrasives. So often,
we think all polishes are aboutthesame. Aswetalkmore aboutthis,
you will see a big difference. Very recently new chemicals have
been made available that can be used by the chemist to formulate a
product that will offer the boat owner a clean slick surface without
removing more gelcoat than necessary. Even though much more
expensive to manufacture, these products formulated together
properlywill remove stains, waterspots, oxidized gelcoatandpther
surface accumulation without causing additional scratches in the
surface.,You would not use sandpaper on your boat, why then
remove more gelcoat than necessary with a harsh liquid or paste
abrasiv6? Along with removing the surface accumulation, a good
cleaner also deep cleans the small pores and assures you of a
totally deep clean surface. You will notice that as you apply this
type of cleaner to the surface, you will geta colortransferfrom your
boat onto the application rag. Never be alarmed, this is the oil and
dry gelcoat along with the other stains, oil, etc. that must be . removed. They are what is giving your boat that old dull -appearance.
Although most of us clean our boat without the aid of an electric
buffer, for those of you whodo use the buffer, a liquid cleaner
formulated to be used by hand or buffer is your best buy.
Now that you have not only deep cleaned the gelcoat but
removed the surface accumulation, you are ready to restore the
surface to its original color plus give it the best possible surface
protection. Before we get in» the requirements of a truly good wax.
let's keep in mind that we are talking about large areas that will be
polished. Therefore, ease of application and wipe off become a very
important factor. We talked about new chemicals now being used
to help clean the gelcoat. The same holds true in wax. Artificial
waxes that have recently become available enable the manufacturers to control the ease of application 8nd wipe off.
Of equal importance is to offer you the maximum in surface
protection. Perhaps a good point in case would be the
question..."How long has it been since you have used natural
'
rubber on your car?" Through modern chemistry, synthetic or
artificial rubber has been developed which, according to the
manufacturer, will guarantee 40,000 miles per set. Much the same
is true in the polish field. Artificial or synthetic waxes enable the
polish manufacturer, by using as many as seven or eight combinations of these waxes, to obtain additional hardness, ease of wipe on
and wipe off, better luster, darkness, color retention and additional
lasting quality. Another big advantage for those of us polishing our
own boats, you no longer have to take the boat out of the sunlight.
It is often asked what goes, into making an outstanding marine
cleaner and wax Most manufacturers try to provide a blend of
waxes which will give outstanding lasting quality with ease of
application and wipe off. It's not too dificult to offer a wax that will
give a slick finish, but some strive for more than that. Ingredients
are added that will keep the boat finish as close to its, original color
as possible. This is accomplished by adding to the wax some of the
same ingredients that dry out or oxidize from the finish. In essence,
it feeds the pores of the gelcoat and· gives it new life (this is
especially effective on dark colors). Some of the waxes used are
blended for application and wipe off, others for slickness and still
others for long lasting luster.
As a manufacturer, I might add that whatever boat wax you buy,
remember it's not so much what you pay that's important compared
with the time you spend cleaning and waxing your boat. If it' s not
going to give you the best results you are looking for, you have
wasted a lot of time and money.

We have never recommended off-shore cruising on a Hobie Cat + ' .
or any other small boat not capable of carrying adequatelife-saving , ..

A Different Way to Cruise
living on the beach, I could poke into places previously seen only from a
distance. In this way, sacrificing some "necessities" to the freedom to put into
shallow out-of-the-way coves and make our camp, Ed Prorock and I
covered 350 miles of Baja's Gulf coast from near Santa Rosalia to Cabo
Pulmo, south of La Paz. This was in January and February, a time we
chose because the prevailing winds are from the north, blowing
moderately hard each afternoon. This meant a good run whenever we
wanted to travel.
We soon found out how different this kind ofcruisingcouldbe. After
launching and beating out of Concepcion Bay, we landed on an open
beach just west of Punto Concepcion and mucked about on the beach
examining an incredible array.of snail shells exposed by the full-moon
low tide, then made camp and dinner of fish, rice and freeze-dried
vegetables. As we sat by the warm fire we noticed the dew was heavy but
didn't think of it further until we went to our sleeping bags and discovered
that the dew, which keeps a yacht's deck so wet had made the bags more
than damp. In fact they closely resembled sponges by morning.
The night seemed longer than usual as we watched the Big Dipper
crawl slowly around the North Star and debated putting on wet suits,
but the morning sun elevated our spirits. From then on we made a tent
out of our groundcloth. Two days and 35 miles later, a beach inthe lee of
Punta Pulpito was a precursor to the kind we eventuallycame toexpect.
0/a was beached on a crescent of sand between a cliff and a massive
yellow headland, with coyote tracks the only marks in the smooth white
sand and some of the best diving ever in the clear water off the point.
This was the isolation for which we had sacrificed cabin comforts.
Navigating mainly by Leland Lewis' "Sea Guide Baja," we picked
Caleta San Jacinto next on the basis of his glowing description, found
Bert and May Morrow there aboard their 55-foot ketch Kawai Tee, and
enjoyed a feast of green salad, home-baked bread, cheese, lobster
(supplied by 041 Napa Valley Pinot Chardonnay and Canadian
chocolate that made 0/a's fare seem rather sad for the next few days.
Big-boat cruising does have some obvious benefits.

Later that night, a coyq, the local name for winter-time northerly
gales, started to blow and lasted a day and a night. Comfortably
beathed, we were restless nevertheless and set out under reefed mainsail
.the next morning when it seemed lighter. As any Monday morning
quarterback could predict, it picked up again within 30 minutes, and
0/a was soon flying in 35 knots of wind. The main was too much, even
with both of us and all gear stacked on the after cross bar to keep her
bows up. Sailing a Hobie faster than the seas can be tense, and we soon
switched to' the jib about three-quarters up (all it would go), and this
kept us surfing nicely in control until we rounded Punto Mangles to find
a smooth lee inside. Pleased with Ola's heavy-weather performace, we
beached her and relaxed. Next we camped for two superb days at Puerto
Ballandra, where, lying on the beach at night, we could see the lights of
Loreto 15 miles past the two points that formed the bay's entrance.
Pelicans diving on bait fish woke us at sunrise, while thousands ofdoves
flushed out of the mangrove thickets behind us.

'' , '. · Arrival at Puerto Escondito was a mild culture shock when, instead of
, quiet beaches, we found what looked like an American trailer park. The
beautiful bay of Steinbeck's "Sea of Cortez" was lined with campers.
d/a didn't fit well with the Winnebagos, so we joined a group of
» ' 'pescadores at the end of the beach and picked up advice forthe 140-mile
passage to La Paz. We spent several pleasant days with them, chatting,
.; • , drinking beerand sailing in the bay. Many ofthe younger men had never
used sails on their canous, but they picked up the techniques quickly,

i
Another stop was the salt ponds of Ballia Amortajada on 1sla San
0
Jose, where we spent two days clamming and talking with the men who
work the salt. At the southern end of the island is one of the biggest
mangrove lagoons in the Gulf, grounds for thousands ofegrets, herons,
. S.,; stilts and other birds that were so numerous they looked like ornaments
against the dark green of the foliage; also gnats, too heavy for bird
watching in some seasons. Seven miles on, at Isla San Francisco, there
followed two idyllic days on a white sand beach ina little cove that made
us really appreciate the advantages of Hobie cruising as we explored the
island, did some diving and waited for a good day to make the 23-mile
crossing to Espiritu Santo. This is in open water, 30 miles from the
mainland and exposed to the full sweep of the Gulf in a norther, so we
watched the weather carefully, checking the barometer, and took off ina
beam wind of 10-15 knots that got us there in two hours, 20 minutes, a
great sail. Then it rained for seven days, with almost no wind.
I am an ecologist, and I had come to Espiritu Santo h6ping to observe
the blackjackrabbits (which are found only on this island) inadvance of
a return trip for more extended study. The weathet made this difficult,
and we spent four days in a cave above Candelero Cove eating fish and
rice for dinner and leftover fish and rice for breakfast while waiting out
the rain. When we could get out to lookat the rabbits-whichare indeed
black-we found the rough volcanic landscape covered by wildflowers
brought out by December rains. North American hummingbirds that
: . winter in Baja, buzzing like giant bumblebees, guarded theirblossoming
territory.
Bored with the rainy calm after six days, we hitched a ride to La Paz,
' towing behind Mac and Dorothy MacDonald's sloop Daybreak. For a
. few days, we made the most of the restaurants there:and did some
daysailing in the harbor. In one of the high points of the whole trip, off ' ·
El Magote peninsula, we dame upon a school of porpoises and had the
thrill of a race with them. As 0/a skimmed along, thdy surfaced
alongside and one even arched out of the water between the hulls. At
-...
arm's length from their backs as they swam rapidly with us, we had a
new perspective on their size, Which seemed as big as Ola, and on their
strength and impressive ability to accelerate.,The race end6d when the
channel turned and we shot across-a bar into shallow water, suddenly
alone but still exhilarated.
The soft days in La Paz ended with a sail south to Cabb Pulmo where
we could leave Ola at the ranch ofa friend while I took the bus back to
Santa Rosalia to retrievd my van. In two months we had covered only
between 350 and 375 miles, but sailing slowly, without civilized
amenities, had so changed our sense oftime and distance that I found it
4 hard to adjust to the pace ofthe bus as it sped me back to civilized living.

Fleet #91 is alive and well in-the city of

The road to recovery was paved early

Dreaming of the Hobie summer.
That just about says it all. Last May
(75), we sailed the last three races of our
season opener in a blizzard.
Unbelievable! !-freezing crews, boats
disappearing into the white after rounding the mark, and ice formig on the sails.
This year, however, we've been in touch
with the"Big Skipper" and stand assured
that there will be no repeat. With that in
mind, we. shook the drowsiness of our
winter hibernation long enough to elect
the following fleet officers: Commodore,
John Keller; Vice Commodore, Brenda
Cole; Sec./Treas., Bonnie Crail; and
General Advisors, Andy Shearer and
Mike Walling. Also formulated was a 60race schedule including a July 3-4-5
points regatta and the Division #5
Championships August 14-15.
No doubt our spring meeting will find
us with various amounts of overweight
surround68 by untanned chicken skin.
You must understand-it's been a long
winter-but through the snow storms we
can see a Hobie summer.

Common Market objectives andhas carried
the "Hobie Way of Life" to thousands of
:people of different nationalities.
Today, a comprehensive sailing and
racing program, growing every day,
combines the activities of clubs, Heels and
associations all over the continent.
Each group has its own unique
characteristics, adding a particular flavor
to the common goal. This was perhaps best
illustrated at the European Nationals
{September, St-Tropez} ·where over a
hundred German, French, Dutch, Italian,
Swiss and English skippers fought it out for
top honors.
Preceding the European Nationals,
· Hobie Cat owners participate in a series of
pre-qualification regattas in their own
countries, or across the borders.
F .:... I.
i....
. .
A European points system permits them to ·
qualify anywhere on the continent. Their
three best regattas for the season are used
to calculate final qualificatidn, but each
skipper must participate in his own
national championship regatta, which
cannot be thrown out. This explains the
existence of "point" regattas and
"non-point" regattas.
If you prefer the sunny climate
of southern Europe, you can get into a
number of regattas in southern France and
Italy. The best wind conditions are usually.
to be found on the Mediterranean. but
some breaker waves will greet the
surfing buffs arpund Biarritz on the
Atlantic Coast. The fleet in Rome is
Darticularly active if you're headed for
.Italy. • · •

Coming back up through the center, you'll
find a lot of competition on Lake Geneva,
sparked by the keen leadership of
Sig Maxwell. Racing (or even just sailing}
with the breathtaking scenery of the Alps
in the background is an adventure in itself.
The same sort of experience is available
in southern Germany, where
Hubert Wittmann can provide you
with a boat on Lake Constance and a hotel
room to boot. If you're going to Munich,
Gerald Engelmann, a recent convert to
Hobie Fever, is the perfect example of
southern German hospitality.
Northern Germany has a particularly
active and competitive Hobie Cat
association. With over a hundred and fifty
members they are on the water almost
every weekend. Carlo Backhausen, former

Hobie Cat Sailing
EUROPEAN SUMMER REGATTA PROGRAM 1976
in Europe
continued
European Champion, and a dealer in
Hamburg, epitomizes the Hobie Way of Life
and can help you sail the waters of the
North Sea.
In Holland, Martin Schuitemaas leads
the Dutch scene and is particularly
well-located on the coast. Literally
hundreds of Dutch sailors hit the water, in
any kind of weather. and make that area
one of the busiest in Europe.
Back in France, you can visit the rustic
coasts of Brittany and get in a few races
between meals. Dinard and Piriac are focal
points. You can evendo some sailing not far
from Paris, where the fleet Iivens things
up year round. The Frozen Feet Regatta
in November is a roaring success, if you
travel off season.
Our hats go off to Hank Pauloo and his
team in France. They are interested in
seeing more Americans in European
competition; and we couldn't agree more.
If you want more detailed information,
write to: Coast Catamaran France,
Route de Pierrefeu, 83400 Hyeres, France.

Lake McConaughy in Ogallala, Nebraska was the .
sight' of a "phenomenal discovery";-made by:Fleet'#61
members when they decided to test the load tarIying
capacity of a Hobie 10. The four test pilots ( from left:

comfortably float a 700-pound family, but it was "a bit
sluggish" maneuvering... Gee, fellas, why's that?!

.
'i
'.
.
1975 was a great first year for Fleet
#158. The growth and enthusiam were
fantastic and will be even better during
this bi-centennial year. Activities are
already under way and the wetsuits are
being put to good use. A seventy-degree
day in February was all it took for the
Hobies to hit the lake-naturally a Hobie
Day-except for the 14 sailor who forgot
his wetsuit.
Last Year's Fleet Series winners were
Len Anderson and Barb Siron ( 16), John
McKey ( 14), and HOP and Ann Pinther
( 16). We enjoyed the Hobie people who
came to our regattas last year and had
some great times traveling to Wisconsin
and Michigan. We hope 1976 will bring
many new Hobie faces to Central Illinois.
Bloomington is located in the heart of
Illinois and is An easy drive from Chicago,
St. Louis or Indianapolis. If you are
going to be in our area this summer, make
it a point to join us for some great Hobie
fun. Paul Pinther, Commodore.
Fleet #158, Phone: (309) 662-4519.
FLEET No. 125
Chicago, Illinois
Comments from the Commodore...
A word ofthanks to all ofyou(and you
know who you are) who voted me in as
commodore this year at our Annual
Banquet. Last year, with the super effort
that Ken Lowe put forth in organizing
and running Fleet- #125 from its conception, will be hard to top. But, with his
continuing support, we will have another.
great year, hopefully with an even larger
membership.
To get into the spirit of'76, Fleet #125
will sponsor what I think will be a most
enjoyable race-THE'76 FLAG FIGHT
FIASCO. The rules will be very simple:
there will be no rules except to run a
triangular course with the sole purpose of
collecting all red, white, and blue flags,'or.
as many as possible, from each of the

SEA CLIFF 17 th ANNUAL
MULTIHULL REGATTA
Iune 5 & 6, 1976 / Sea Cliff Yacht Club, New York
0 The Sea Cliff Yacht Club will host its 17th Annual Sea Cliff
Multihull Regatta for all classes of day racing and cruising multihulls on Saturday and Sunday, Iune 5 and 6, 1976, in Hempstead
Harbor and Long Island Sound. This traditional event wasstarted in
1960 as the first International C Class Championship and has
attracted multihull enthusiasts ever since. This year it will be even
more impressive and jubilent because our U.S. challenger was
successful in winning the Little America's Cup for the first time in
history. 0 Manhasset Bay's Hobie Fleet #109 is co-sponsoring the
event along with the Long Island Multihull Association. who has
been sponsoring the regatta since 1969. Separate starts and trophies
will be held for Hobie 16, Hobie 14, Tornado, A and B Handicap,
other one-of-a-kind developmental racing machines, and cruising
boats. The largest fleets will be. the active Hobie classes from the
North and South Shores of Long Island, Connecticut and New
Jersey. For further information contact: Jamerson Hook,

HOTLINE / APRIL-MAY 1976
After lunching amidst directors andproducers,
it was time to "roll 'em".
Hobie Fleet #87, of the San Francisco Bay area, recently earned
$500 for a day spent playing volleyball. basking in the summerlike sun on Cronkite Beach, eating a catered feast, sailing
through Pacific Ocean surf, and becoming immortalized on film.
How did it happen??
On Thursday. February 12. the call came to Fleet #87 for a
group of boats to serve as backdrop for a General Tire
commercial(!}. When they arrived at Cronkite Beach, three Hobie
16's [belonging to Fleet members Bob Nelson, David Stearns and
Ion Trebotich} and two Hobie 14's (Jim Nixon's and Bill
Patterson's) were neatly arranged on the beach awaiting direction. The film company, having heard rumors of "on-time"
skipper's meetings, cleverly stated a 10 a.m. curtain call, but
didn't intend on shooting until late afternoon. This left plenty of
time for volleyball and other assorted activities, like getting a
sun tan, playing cards, or tying knots.
After lunching amidst directors and producers on a freebie
meal fit for a king ( including fresh sliced pineapple}, it was time
to roll 'em. The boats were positioned and repositioned via
walkie-talkies. The actors ( Fleet #87 members ) were requested
to shed as much clothing as was befitting"family hour" ( summer
scene, mind youl, and to putter about the boats. Bob Nelson and
Jim Nixon sailed back and forth just outside the line of breakers,
and Ion Trebotich's boat was held in the surf, at the ready for
beachng. At the signal "PUTTER!", Jon's boat was pulledin from
the surf by Elaine Stearns and Bill Patterson, all the while
waving to an imaginary assemblage of friends [surrounded by
suitable cars with polished General Tires ) on a near-by bluff.
After ten to fifteen retakes, a quarter inch of yellow gelcoat, and
two hours of puttering, it was a wrap. All present considered it
a job well done.
The commercial was scheduled to start being aired around the
first of March, so next time you settle down in front of the boob
tube be sure to keep an eye out for General Tires and the nowfamous Hobie Fleet #87!
