I left to discover the United States one June 19th.
I left the rain of Geneva behind me to discover the mild climate of the
Californian coast.
Finally! After a 12-hour flight, I can see downtown LA from the aircraft window,
as well as its well-known entirely identical row houses, laid out one after the
other in little criss-cross streets. What a change! No less than ten exit lanes from
Los Angeles international airport.
I seem to be in an American movie. Big trucks and picks-up drive up and
down the highways, fast-food chains come at you from every direction, and
American flags flutter proudly in the gardens of houses.
I began my adventure in San Diego, then my family and I joined a group of
40 people for a tour of the American West.

Breaking News
The Statue of Liberty will not be accessible
for a year
From October 2011, the public will have to remain
patient for at least a year before they have another
chance to climb the 354 steps leading to the top of
the Statue of Liberty. Refurbishment work and the
construction of a new staircase are planned for
security reasons and to make evacuation easier. The
resumption of visits is scheduled for the end of 2012.
AIRLINES
Travel to the USA: ‘ESTAs’ must be paid for
From 8 September next, travellers coming from one of
the 36 countries taking part in the visa exemption
programme, including Switzerland, will have to pay US$
14 for the issue of an entry authorization requested by
way of the Electronic System for Travel Authorization
(ESTA). US$ 4 of this entry tax will go to administration of
the system and US$ 10 for promoting tourism. (and can
only be paid using a credit card. The ESTA application
has to be made on the site www.esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
I think you have to make the request on behalf of
your clients).
Anyone who has made the ESTA application before 8
September, and for a period of validity of two years, will
not have to pay the tax. But all travellers receiving a new
passport will have to make a new ESTA application.
Short news items from airlines
•Qatar Airlines will provide a daily Zurich-Doha service
with effect from 1 November 2010.
•On 30 May 2011, the Finnair company will add a daily
Helsinki-Singapore service to its programme. This will
be the only daily flight connecting Northern Europe
to Singapore with the special feature of a timetable
designed for business-people.
