GM’s
Message
Dear members,
W
arm greetings! It is my pleasure to personally introduce myself to all of you. I have taken
over the operations and management of Aranda Country Club from February 2007, and
I look forward to your participation in the many activities we have in store for you and
your family. But most of all, I look forward to the opportunity to personally meet you at the Club and
get to know you better.
My predecessor, Mr. Ronnie Tan is now seconded to NTUC Club to take on a larger portfolio under
his wing, the Labour Movement 2011 initiatives. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ronnie
for his valuable contributions at Aranda and wish him every success and happiness in his new
endeavours.
2007 is an exciting year and we look forward to organising more social, recreational and sporting activities, and food & beverage
promotions to meet the needs of your family of varying ages.
Be on the lookout for the forthcoming Easter Brunch at Restaurant Aranda and Bunny Egg Hunt for the entire family on Sunday,
8 April 2007. And come celebrate Secretary’s Week and Labour Day with us. Special promotions are also lined up at Restaurant
Aranda and The Spa @ Aranda to celebrate both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, so all Mums and Dads can enjoy a special day
of pampering.
Also, be on the lookout and sign up for the fun-packed events like the forthcoming bowling tournament, mind-mapping for kids
and the Ho Chi Minh City tour as well as our firm favourites like yoga, social dance classes and swimming classes for kids. Details
can be found at the respective pages. There is so much going on at Aranda Country Club, so make the most of your membership
and join in the fun.
With all that’s in store, I wish all Aranda members a most healthy and fulfilling year ahead.
See you at the Club soon.

Discipline
without the
Cane
D
o you remember the first few years with your
child? You watched him grow up day by day,
cheered at his first steps. You gave him lots of love
and encouragement at every stage of his early
development.
Moreover, long-term corporal punishment affects a child’s emotional
makeup. Children who have always been beaten usually become
emotionally scarred and timid. If not, they become unrepentant
and even violent as they have gotten used to expecting physical
punishment. As a parent, the last thing you want is for your child to
lack self-confidence, or morph into a monster!
At some point all that stopped.
He began to develop his own opinions and the battles began. Slowly,
instead of praises and smiles, you started nagging. Scolding. And one
day – in a fit of anger – you caned him. But that didn’t make either of
you feel good, so there were no winner there. So how can you be an
effective parent without resorting to the cane?
Children. It is such a joy to see them grow and develop but with this
joy is also the heartache and sorrow when they misbehave. Learning
to be fair but firm with your child is what makes parenting such a
noble and difficult job. That children need boundaries is something
everyone agrees with. But what sort of discipline should parents give?
Is the old adage “spare the rod and spoil the child” true?
For most of us, the “rod” was certainly the sort of discipline we
received – beatings, canings, standing for hours outside the house in
the sun. And because we grew up only knowing this sort of discipline,
we continue to discipline our children this way. But studies have
shown that corporal punishment is not an ideal way to discipline
children. Corporal punishment only inspires fear in children and isn’t a
long-term solution for controlling and correcting bad behaviour – you
will soon find that they will only behave when you are around.
The experts agree that positive reinforcement delivers well-rounded,
co-operative, happy children. Positive reinforcement works on the
premise that people are more likely to obey when they are rewarded
for good behaviour. This does not mean you give bribes to your
child in exchange for his good behaviour – that would only turn him
into a selfish, calculating person. It means, instead, that if and when
he displays good behaviour on his own, you acknowledge it. For
example, if one day your child picks up his toys after himself,
you praise him by saying, “I am so happy you picked up your toys!
Thank you, Damien, for helping Mummy keep the house neat.”
In this way, he feels rewarded by your praise and he also understands
why he must do it (he realises now that picking up his toys makes
you feel happy and it keeps the house clutter-free). Occasionally,
when your child behaves extremely well, you could even reward him
with a (material) treat. Both of these measures will encourage him to
repeat the good behaviour and become a better person.
05
Positive reinforcement is but one side of the coin, though. The other
side involves being firm and fair in setting boundaries, ensuring they
are observed and meting out the appropriate punishment when
they are not. Children must learn from a young age that they are
responsible for their actions and the consequences of those actions.
To teach your children this, start by laying down the rules on what
they can and cannot do, as well as the consequences of doing the
wrong things.
One consequence can be a “time-out” session. Designate a “timeout” chair where you send your children when they misbehave. It
doesn’t have to be for too long. Five or ten minutes ostracised from
the activities around him will be enough for little Damien to realise
that misbehaving means no play. This is a far greater punishment to
a child than a quick caning, and it sends a more rational message to
your child.
Let your child know the behaviour you expect. For example, before
a trip to the supermarket, remind him that if he screams or shouts
in the supermarket, he will be denied his favourite activity for a day
and will spend time-out. Then, if and when your child disobeys,
mete out the punishment as promised. Never promise to mete
out a punishment for disobedience and not carry it out. You may
feel hurt by punishing your child, but if you are inconsistent in your
discipline, he will not take you seriously and the discipline will be for
naught. Be aware also of a young child’s sleeping patterns and need
for stimulation. If you are dragging your three-year-old on a day-long
shopping spree, it would be too much to expect him not to act up.
As parents, we all wish the best for our children, and we are also
responsible for ensuring they grow up to be law-abiding citizens.
In this regard, we should invest in their emotional development by
practising effective disciplinary measures. Positive reinforcement and
meting out punishment when it is due both go a long way towards
nurturing a cultured, well-rounded individual. And positive parenting
makes for a more enjoyable parenting experience as well!

The
Food of
L VE
@ Restaurant Aranda
The Valentine’s Dinner promotion at
Restaurant Aranda truly was the food of
love. Over 40 couples enjoyed a sumptuous
five-course dinner with seafood, choice
meats and wine, completed by a mouth-watering
chocolate dessert. Couples revelled in the romantic atmosphere as
two musicians serenaded the crowd with their guitars and rich voices. The
evening was rounded off as guests received a mystery Valentine’s gift each.
A Fortunate
Surprise
Chinese New Year at Aranda Country Club proved to be a vibrant affair this
year. The Club celebrated the first day of Chinese New Year with our
members by hosting the traditional lion dance performance. The lion
dancers deftly “plucked the green”, or cai qing, bringing much applause
from the audience. Those present were also offered a lucky number which
was formed on the floor with sections of mandarin oranges. The day ended with
the Fortune God distributing “gold coins” to the members, traditionally blessing
them with wealth and good fortune.

Muar
Memories
Saturday 16 December 2006 is a date that will hold fond
memories for a long time to come for the 32 attendees of the
Aranda Muar Tour. Members, their guests and kids set off from
the Club lobby at 7 am in high spirits, ready for the two-hour
coach journey to Muar.
The travellers got to visit an organic farm and went shopping
for local delicacies to stock up for the upcoming Christmas,
New Year and Chinese New Year festivities. Happy with their
bargains, everyone eagerly tucked into the sumptuous lunch
and dinner spreads which included such delicacies as fried and
stewed pork knuckles, tasty fish and juicy prawns.

Every Saturday at Aranda Country Club, the HeartBeat Lounge
comes alive to the tapping of dancing feet. That can mean only
one thing - the Club’s members dancing to Off Beat Cha Cha
& Ballroom Waltz!
Because dancing has surged in
popularity in recent years, the
dance classes are well received by
members and guests. In fact the classes are so
sought after that new classes will be opened to cater to demand.
Each class has an average of 20 students, which ensures that
those learning receive quality attention.
Classes are led by dance instructor, Mr Wu, who is no stranger
to this contagious art form. Besides being an accredited
international dance judge, Mr Wu is a certified instructor having
obtained his professional teaching qualifications in London
back in 1991. Mr Wu has been teaching at Aranda for the last
