Salazar Helps Secure Over $600 Million for Key Colorado Military Installations in MilCon-Vets Appropriations Bill United States Senator Ken Salazar announced that Colorado’s military installations will receive over $600 million under the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act of 2008 (H.R. 2642) - passed by the Senate. Overall, the bill will provide $109.2 billion in appropriations for military construction, military family housing and veterans’ affairs programs throughout the Country. Senator Salazar also was successful in including an amendment that will halt the expansion of the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site for one year. “By passing this very important piece of legislation, Hispanic Heritage Month the U.S. Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to the brave men and women who serve, and have served as members of America’s armed forces,” said Senator Salazar. “With this funding, we are investing significantly in Colorado’s military installations to ensure that Colorado maintains its position as a National leader and crown jewel of American Homeland Security.” Below are highlights of Colorado specific projects which will receive funding under the Military Construction and Veterans Appropriations Bill, passed by the U.S. Senate: • $61.3 million for the Fitzsimons VA Hospital • $470 million in military construction funds for Fort Carson • $24.5 million for construction of an Air and Space Integration Cont. on page 18 For more than 30 years, the United States has annually celebrated the rich history and cultural traditions of our Nation’s Hispanic American people. National Hispanic Heritage Month provides us an opportunity to express deep appreciation to Hispanic Americans for their countless contributions to our society and to pay tribute again to America’s distinctive diversity. Since our Nation’s founding, Hispanic Americans have played an integral role in our country’s exceptional story of success. Hispanic Americans served with heroism in every major American military conflict. The Continental Army benefited from the valor of Bernardo de Gálvez, who led his frequently outnumbered troops to numerous victories against the British. Luis Esteves organized the first Puerto Rico National Guard and rose through the ranks of the U.S. Army to become a distinguished Brigadier General. And 38 Hispanics have earned our Nation’s highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor. The United States academic and scientific communities benefited from the contributions of Hispanic Americans like physicist Luis Walter Alvarez, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1986. Business leaders like Roberto Goizueta have had a positive effect on our Nation’s economy; and many Hispanics have greatly influenced America’s artistic, legal, and political communities. Cont. on page 18 Hispanic Heritage Month 2007: Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was observed during the week including Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a monthlong celebration (Sept. 15 — Oct. 15). America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanishspeaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively. Population 44.3 million - The estimated Hispanic population of the United States as of July 1, 2006, making people of Hispanic origin the nation’s largest ethnic or race minority. Hispanics constituted 15 percent of the nation’s total population. (This estimate does not include the 3.9 million residents of Puerto Rico.) Now Open To The Public Jeanelle Soto-Quintana “My whole intent is to try to make the transition for our division as smooth as possible, she said. “The staff has been extremely supportive and patient with the learning curve that is taking place.” Since she came to PCC five years ago as its GEAR-UP coordinator, SotoQuintana’s trademark has been the zeal she has displayed in helping students succeed. Back then, she encouraged middle and high school students to plan for higher education. “I loved working with youth and being able to visibly see them start to dream about the possibility of (attending) college,” Jeanelle explained. Later, she became the Business & Technology division’s education advocate, a position that underwent a change of title and responsibilities and evolved into the advising coordinator post. The thing that has remained constant is her love of working with students. “I have been able to help facilitate the college experience and provide encouragement and support to tons of wonderful students through advising and retention initiatives,” she said, adding that she considers herself blessed to be serving an institution where student success is the top priority. A decade ago while employed in the correctional profession, Jeanelle never imagined working in higher education. She eventually earned both bachelor ’s and master ’s degrees (business administration) from what then was the University of Southern Colorado. That education has changed her life, just like the lives she will help change in her interim dean position. “I look forward to the experience and opportunity to work with the other divisional deans, vice presidents and president on issues and initiatives that will continue to support our students here at PCC,” she said. The kick-off is set for September 18th and the campaign will through October 23rd. The power behind Drive to Thrive is more than 100 passionate volunteers who make phone calls to engage support for CASA. The 2007 campaign will be led by a committee that will organize teams to call donors and compete to raise dollars to support CASA. There will also be a competition among corporate teams, including Smith Barney, the Elite 25 Realtors, and Northwestern Mutual. The Drive to Thrive Committee is chaired by Josh Waymire and includes Wayne Bland, Rob McDonald, Jennifer McHugh, and Martin Thrasher. The need is immediate as there are 700 children waiting for advocacy in the court system. To make a contribution visit www.casappr.org or call 447-9898, ext. 1002. Since 1989, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Pikes Peak Region has been recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children in the 4th Judicial District (El Paso and Teller Counties). CASA’s goal is to ensure safety and permanency for children whose lives are in turmoil. CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court and in the community. The desired result is that children are placed into safe, loving homes where they can thrive. Pueblo City Schools Seeks Foreign Language Translators Pueblo City Schools is asking community members who are fluent in any foreign language to contact the district and help support the district’s goal of exceeding international curriculum standards. The bilingual tutors and translators who are selected will serve at selected schools and be compensated based on their expertise and training. The district is creating a Translator and Tutor World Language Data Bank, partially in response to an increase in students from Asian countries, but also to better serve English Language Learner students and families from Korea, Vietnam, China and Italy. Flora Camejo-Lenhart, (English Language Acquisition Consultant) said there is a critical need for bilingual experts to provide tutoring and translation services. “We have a rapidly growing international student body, so we must have adults who are Age: Too Old, Too Young I just reached another anniversary of my 39th birthday. Age and what it means to certain people is a unique test for all of us. In Vietnam, I remember thinking “God just let me reach the age of mid twenties, then that changed to let me reach 30. Then before you know it, one reaches 40, you find yourself retired from the military, people said you are too young to ‘retired.’ Through this time one still had favorite songs that will linger. Our own “standards” if your will, “Can’t stop falling in love with you (Elvis), Unchained Melody (The Righteous Brothers), Volver, Volver, (Vicente Fernandez), just to name a few. You get past 40; but don’t think about it, because you feel 30 something and so many exiting dynamics happen in your presence. Then comes the 10th anniversary and you begin to change your life style, you are at the YMCA 5 days a week, watch what you eat and drink, someone says your are too old to be doing this or that; but you are too young for the senior discount. Then you think about perhaps the song I should recite is “I did it my way.” It makes you, wonder, wonder how some things happened. Did I really comprehend all that was happening all around me and did I develop positive results! My daughter graduated from college, is now married. Her seven year old nephew and my grandson called me to wish me a happy anniversary; I want to see him play football in high school. I don’t doubt that I will see him play football, I want to be there for his first game and I will. Over 40, one has to be careful, in ones zeal to please others; one can be conditioned to believe we have become inadequate. This and other obscurities can feel real, just because of fear of disappointment. Things change and then they stay the same, it takes a cold hard wake up call sometimes to get your attention. I made a request of this lady (shall go nameless) for a Christmas holiday gala, she replied that I was too old, may not make it to Christmas, therefore would not commit. I have some Fruitcake that was meant for her last year (she disappeared) but I will promise you this: as young as she thinks she is, I will live long enough to deliver this fruitcake to her grandchildren. You see Fruitcakes last a long time. Epilogue I spoke earlier in this piece about wake up calls and received one Sunday morning. After all that I have shared with you, if you believe, you know that at times the man in charge can speak to you in a very profound way. As I was walking up the aisle to receive communion, I noticed next to me, a young lady 10-12 years old, in a wheel chair, she seemed very demure, escorted and powered by a guide dog. You are worried about your age, shouldn’t you be thankful for what life has offered you, think of that child in the chair, think of how her opportunities are limited. I shall embrace this and future anniversaries most profoundly. fluent in virtually every language to help us achieve our mission,” she said. The call for foreign language translators may also eventually support the district’s new comprehensive Pre-12 world language and culture curriculum that allows for more than one language to be offered to students. The new curriculum, scheduled to be implemented by SY 2008-2009 will be aligned with Colorado and international foreign language standards. The purpose of the language and cultural curriculum is to support the district’s mission of preparing all Pueblo City School students to compete in a global society. YOUR ONLY 50,000 WATT FM SPANISH RADIO STATION PUEBLO / COLORADO SPRINGS TO REACH THE MULTI MILLION DOLLAR HISPANIC MARKET CONTACT THE PROFESSIONALS IN SPANISH RADIO THE POWER OF SPANISH RADIO! I n s u re U o n l i n e . o rg ) dedicado a la educación del consumidor. 13 de septiembre - 20 de septiembre 2007 Page 7 NEGOCIOS Business PCC’s SBDC featured in state women’s magazine Known more for helping business owners succeed, the Small Business Development Center at Pueblo Community College finds itself in the spotlight today after being showcased because of its own successful operation. The Pueblo SBDC is featured in the Sept./Oct. 2007 issue of Divapreneurs magazine, a statewide publication that promotes women in business. In it, Caroline Parra, the SBDC’s executive director, highlights some of the services offered by the center as well as a female business client that has succeeded because of the assistance she received from Caroline Parra, SBDC’s Executive Director the center. Parra was asked to pen the article – titled “Business 101” — because of the Pueblo SBDC’s reputation for helping its business clients succeed. Much of the article focuses on Shelley McPherson, a businesswoman who is successfully running her Wiping Rags, Inc. company in Pueblo thanks to the assistance she received from the SBDC. McPherson took advantage of the SBDC’s many business services that put her on the path to success. The SBDC offers “one-stop” assistance to small businesses, making a wide variety of information and guidance available in central and easily accessible locations. It provides services for Pueblo, Fremont, and Custer counties and has office locations in Pueblo and Canon City. One of its main services is free one-on-one counseling for both existing and start-up businesses. It also conducts seminars and workshops designed to help small business owners improve their business knowledge and plan their start-up business. It also conducts a 12-week Leading Edge course that September Issue of Hispanic Business Magazine Focuses On Diversity Issues Hispanic Business magazine’s September edition, which features its annual report on diversity, its Best Schools for Hispanics list and the Diversity Elite 60 - the top companies with opportunities for Hispanics. ANNUAL REPORT: Hispanic students and professionals face two key challenges: antiaffirmative action policies and a push toward globalization. Companies are hiring foreign nationals who are considered Hispanic but who often lack the cultural experiences shared by U.S. Hispanics. While Hispanic students in U.S. schools stand to fill the diversity need, getting them into the higher-education pipeline and keeping them there have become increasingly difficult. With this in mind, Hispanic Business magazine has compiled its Best Schools for Hispanics top ten lists. BEST SCHOOLS: After analyzing Hispanic enrollment figures, Hispanic faculty numbers and the amount of degrees earned by Hispanics at universities across the nation, Hispanic Business magazine compiled its Best Schools for Hispanics top 10 lists in the fields of business, engineering, law and medicine. The University of Texas at Austin, University of New Mexico and Stanford University each claimed a No. 1 ranking. UT Austin was crowned with the No. 1 medical school, the No. 2 business school, and the No. 3 law school. Stanford was named the top business school, placed second among medical schools and finished eighth on the best law schools list. The top spot on the law schools list went to the University of New Mexico. Hispanic Business determined that University of Texas at El Paso was the best engineering school for Hispanics. Looking to the future of the Hispanic graduates from these universities, Hispanic Business magazine lists top companies belonging to its Diversity Elite 60. Sperry tears ACL in left knee, out for season Medical tests confirm Colorado State star Kory Sperry has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, ending the senior’s season. Surgery has not been scheduled. A timeline for recovery would put him back on the field by next summer should he decide to return next year and petition the NCAA for a medical hardship waiver. Sperry, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound tight end from Vineland, Colo., was injured in the first quarter of CSU’s game against Cal on Saturday. His three-touchdown performance in the opener against Colorado earned him the John Mackey award as the national tight end of the week. It’s the fourth straight season Colorado State has lost a key player to a season-ending injury knee injury. Last year, the Rams lost running back Kyle Bell to an ACL injury during the final week of preseason practice. In 2005, it was safety Ben Stratton who went down with a torn ACL in camp and in ’04, linebacker Eric Pauly tore an ACL against Utah late in the season. At 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds, Sperry has the size, speed and skills that make NFL scouts take notice. He scored three touchdowns against Colorado in the opener. Sperry, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound prospect, was hurt in the first quarter of the Rams’ 34-28 loss Saturday to California. 13 de septiembre - 20 de septiembre 2007 Page 9 Page 10 13 de septiembre - 20 de septiembre 2007 Entretenimiento Denver’s Su Teatro to Perform in Rocky Ford and La Junta America’s third oldest Chicano Theatre, El Centro Su Teatro, will be in the area this week to present a series of free events and public performances. The events are sponsored by Otero Junior College’s Otero Players, Club Caliente, and the OJC Arts Department. El Centro Su Teatro, led by artistic director Anthony Garcia, will spend September 12 through 14 at the college, in La Junta, and in Rocky Ford. The theatre troupe’s visit to the Arkansas Valley will culminate in a free performance of their original production, Papi, Me, and Cesar Chavez, a play featuring music and storytelling. Su Teatro will offer Papi, Me, and Cesar Chavez at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 1209 Swink Avenue in Rocky Ford. Earlier in the week, Su Teatro will be working in the Koshare Kiva with Steve Simpson, director, and the cast of the Otero Player’s fall production, Hearts That Weep, Bones That Laugh: Reuñion in acting and improvisation exercises designed to help the cast create their own carpa, a traditional performance form that was, as Garcia puts it, “somewhere between vaudeville and circus.” The troupe will also offer a free public workshop on the stage of the Ed Stafford Theatre in the Humanities Center at OJC. Area high school students and the public are invited to attend this workshop from 7:30-9:00 p.m. Thursday, September 13. No reservations are necessary. Su Teatro’s appearance forms the centerpiece of a semesterlong celebration of the arts in Hispanic culture on the OJC campus and in the community. The celebration, Hispanidad, will feature several events this fall including lectures, dance, mural painting, musical performances, and story circles that honor the oral histories of Valley residents. “We feel very fortunate that it has been possible to enter into this collaboration with a respected professional theatre such as Su Teatro,” Simpson said. “As they celebrate their 35th season, we are honored that Su Teatro found a way to come to our campus to inspire our community of Latino/ Latina students.” Anthony Garcia sums up his theatre’s commitment to the arts in Chicano culture: “Art and culture represent the potential that everyone has to live, to struggle, and to create something to pass on.” Schedule of events: • September 13: Free public workshop; 7:30 to 9 p.m. OJC Humanities Center/Ed Stafford Theatre • September 14: Free performance of Papi, Me, and Cesar Chavez; 7:00 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 1209 Swink Avenue in Rocky Ford. A brand-new model for North America, Rondo encompasses Kia’s “Power to Surprise” tag line and fits perfectly into the company’s evolving image as a leader in safety and value. “The all-new Rondo is a perfect addition to further Kia’s growth in the U.S. market, and allows us to be even more competitive, especially in the everexpanding crossover vehicle segment,” said Len Hunt, executive vice president and COO of KMA. “By broadening our product selection, and with the news of our vehicles’ high level of comfort, quality and performance spreading throughout the industry, more consumers will be attracted to the Kia brand when considering a future vehicle purchase.” Smooth, Clean Exterior Lines (Car Stylatude) The Rondo instantly garners attention with its fresh, clean look thanks to a modern dynamic shape. Available in LX and EX trim levels, standard LX features include body-colored door handles, body-colored side moldings and black front grille crossbars packaged with newly designed 16-inch, sixspoke alloy wheels fitted with 205/60HR16 tires. Upgrading to an EX adds fog lights, 17-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels and 225/50R17 Michelin tires. Chrome accents, which are standard on the EX, include exterior door handles, side moldings and front grille crossbars. Integrated roof rails – sans crossbars – also is standard on EX models and available on most LX trims. The easy-on-the-eyes exterior shape of Rondo can be further enhanced by an accessory body kit, which includes fender flares, front/rear/side fascia extensions and a lower rear spoiler. An upper rear spoiler as well as roof rack Cont. on page 13 13 de septiembre - 20 de septiembre 2007 Page 13 Automundo Autoworld 2007 Kia Rondo Cont... crossbars are available as standalone options. Exterior color choices include two completely new Kia colors, Urban Gray and Fine Silver. Roomy Interior Provides Versatility (Huge Cabinocity, Seat Flexology) Exterior refinement continues to flow into the cabin. Standard features include flat woven seat fabric, an AM/FM/CD tuner with four speakers and air conditioning (for most models) along with power windows, door locks and mirrors. The EX upgrades to Double Raschel seat fabric; an MP3capable AM/FM/CD/ Cassette stereo with front tweeters and steering wheelmounted audio controls; a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; illuminated vanity mirrors; and metal-finish interior door handles. Additional packaging options accentuate the interior to nearluxury status. The Convenience Package (LX) adds cruise control and keyless entry; the Leather Package (EX) adds heated leather seats; and the Premium Package (EX) adds a power sunroof and upgraded 10speaker Infinity AM/FM/ MP3-capable 315-watt digital audio system with in-dash sixCD changer and 7.5-inch subwoofer. Inside Rondo, an immediate sense of spaciousness in the legroom and headroom departments is evident. The standard five- and optional seven-passenger seating configurations will appeal to consumers looking for the functionality of a minivan, but not the size and heft. Slightly taller and wider than its closest competitor, the Mazda5, the Rondo provides a comfortable front row with 41.6 inches of headroom and 41.3 inches of legroom. Second-row space is fixed at 40.2 inches of headroom and 38.2 inches of legroom, regardless of a five- or sevenpassenger seating layout. The optional third-row seating offers a sensible 35.1 inches of headroom and 31.3 inches of legroom, more than enough room to accommodate the average-sized adult. And when optioned with the third row, Rondo’s second row adjusts with a forward/ backward sliding range of nearly one foot in travel. The versatile second-row seats also provide the flexibility of a 60/40 multi-fold split, while the third row folds down in a 50/50 split. Additionally, both rows fold completely flat for maximized cargo room. Practicality does not sacrifice comfort as the driver ’s seat offers six-way adjustments, including height adjustment, and the front passenger offers four-way adjustments. In addition, each passenger is well taken care of with an abundance of storage cubbies and multiple cup holders located in every row. The Online Renewal system for motor vehicles began in April and has been a resounding success with more than 15,000 vehicles renewed online to date in the County. The El Paso County Clerk & Recorder’s Office encourages citizens to renew online via the Colorado.gov website. “Online” Not “In Line” lets residents know there is an alternative to visiting one of the three Motor Vehicle offices to renew their plates – simply go online. There is an additional option of mailing the renewal form and payment to the Clerk & Recorder’s Office. Feedback from residents who have used the online service is very positive: “Just renewed plates on one of our vehicles on-line...what a great innovation...Thanks..!!” “Hello, Online Auto/ Registration Renewal is GREAT!!! Thanks.” “Recently renewed plates online and you asked to be notified when the tags arrived in the mail...it’s here...with time to spare!! Fantastic new website and hope it’s around next year. The small fee added for online renewal is quite acceptable and cheaper than what the Utilities charge for their online payments. Seems this new system is also more reliable than renewal by Pony Express [USPS] using a check. Happy Customer.” The online service supports echecks or credit cards. The fees are $1.00 for e-checks (which is about 22% of the activity) and 2.25% plus $ 0.75 for credit cards. Ringsak, SBA Region VIII Administrator Hurricanes, floods, wildfires, tornadoes and other natural disaster leave thousands homeless and businesses ruined in their wake. Small businesses are particularly vulnerable to the catastrophe of losing important financial records when they fail to back up that data and store important records offsite. Colorado is not immune from natural disasters. This year’s devastating tornado in Holly, CO is a perfect example of why it is critical to prepare for a disaster before it happens. Homeowners, renters and business owners should prepare for the inevitability of disaster. The U.S. Small Business Administration offers the following suggestions for a disaster preparedness plan: • Business owners should start by identifying the company’s vulnerabilities. Look at external risks such as flooding, or wind damage if your business is located in an area where tornadoes or hurricanes occur. Create your disaster plan with the aim of mitigating those risks. • Develop plans to remain in operation if your office, plant or store is unusable. Look at your critical functions and make sure you know how to keep them operational. The plan will provide a road map of how to operate your business during a crisis. You will then want to test the plan to make sure it works for you. • Adequate insurance coverage is essential. Review your current policy to make sure you understand what is not covered. Most policies don’t cover flood damage. The National Flood Insurance Program provides coverage to property owners. According to the Institute for Insurance Information, business interruption insurance is not sold separately, but added to a property insurance policy or included in a package policy. • Business interruption insurance compensates you for lost income if your company has to vacate the premises because of a disaster. It covers the profits you would have earned, based on your financial records, if the disaster had not occurred. It also covers operating expenses, like electricity, that continue even though the business has temporarily shut down • Homeowners, renters and business owners should make copies of important records, back up data saved on computer hard drives, and store that information at a distant offsite location. Business owners should make backup copies of critical records and store them at a remote offsite location—the farther away the better. Documents and CDs should be stored in fire-proof safe deposit boxes. • Information protection and storage companies like Iron Mountain and Unicom provide data protection solutions. Another good idea is to send backup data to a trusted thirdparty office, who can make sure you have you data when you need it. • If you own the building where you do business, upgrades can be made to the property, based on the hazards in your area. For instance, if you live in the part of the country where windstorms occur, consider installing impact-resistant windows and doors. Make sure the roof can weather a storm. • In the case of an approaching hurricane or heavy rainstorm, cover the computers, inventory and other equipment with waterproof tarpaulins. Get items off the floor. It’s a good idea to asses the impact a natural disaster would have on your facility, and then take the steps to prevent possible future damage. • A communications strategy is a key post-disaster recovery strategy. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses for your insurance carrier, suppliers, creditors, employees and customers, the local media, utility companies, and the appropriate emergency response and recovery agencies should be updated regularly. This list should be maintained by a key employee, and a backup person. Appoint a spokesperson to get the word out that your business is still open to dispel rumors of business failure. We want to take some time to thank the 35 people who registered under the JUNTAS team for Sunday’s Race for the Cure at the Garden of the Gods Park. We did not meet our goal but we are very grateful for the efforts of those who signed up and those who recruited walkers. We had a good time and enjoyed a cloudy but rainless day. We ate, drank, danced, laughed, walked, ran and shared a great time with many great people. The venue was great! A big thank you to Angeles Vargas who recruited the most walkers [15] — all at the last minute because she was crazy busy taking care of her family. She worked very hard to pay the fees for herself AND her 4 children! We know that this was a sacrifice for her; we thank her for her dedication to Komen and to JUNTAS. Angeles is the recipient of a $50 Wal Mart card for her efforts. Chris Martinez from the District 11 Office recruited 11! This was the first year that she has organized walkers for JUNTAS — and we are extremely grateful! We will be sending Chris a card for $25 for her efforts in recruiting eleven walkers. Liz Garcia won the $25 Wal Mart gift card for signing up on Thursday night at the Citadel. A special thanks to Rosa Sanchez and Elsa & Soichi Nakamura for helping to staff the table Thursday night! Rosa also helped staff our table on Sunday. They are all very special people! A special thanks to Shelley Lowen who ran the race and wore the JUNTAS t-shirt — she made us all very proud. I also want to thank a special woman who walked even though she was in pain — who is always there to help patients out, and RARELY says no to a request for help! I know she will not appreciate my using her name — you know who you are — te quiero y mil gracias! And of course, once again, a heartfelt thanks to my husband who agreed to go with me at 530 in the morning, who helped me set up, and staffed the table throughout the morning, who walked the 5 K walk with our group, and who carried all of our supplies back and forth. I truly thank him for always supporting Komen and my work with JUNTAS! If appropriate, Please thank him the next time you see him — without him I would not be doing this work! We also thank Aida and Don Richardson for all of the hours they volunteered to help Komen. They were mainly responsible for the transportation of the walkers — the busses and parking, and I am sure for so much more! Many saw Aida directing traffic in one of the lots! We missed her at the JUNTAS booth. We truly appreciate the great work they both did. Also, Connie Dudgeon extended her services to help make this event a big success! We are very proud of them all. Unfortunately, we only collected $65 in donations, so I am asking once again for a small donation—ANY amount will be appreciated. You can still donate online or you can drop off cash or a check made out to Komen CS to my office anytime— I can also pick up any donations. Please know that it is Komen dollars that support JUNTAS and our work. That is why we were able to do over 50 FREE clinical breast exams, we helped over 30 women receive free mammograms last year, and we were also able to teach hundreds of Latinas about breast health. More than 30 million Americans, about 1 in 8 people in the United States, claim Hispanic origin. They contribute to every walk of contemporary American life, while simultaneously preserving the unique customs and traditions of their ancestors. All Americans, regardless of national origin, celebrate the vibrant Hispanic American spirit that influences our Nation’s art, music, food, and faiths. We also celebrate the practices of commitment to family, love of country, and respect for others, virtues that transcend ethnicity, reflect the American spirit, and are nobly exemplified in the Hispanic American community. The strong ties that Hispanic Americans maintain with their ancestral homeland remind us that the United States must pursue robust relations with its trading partners in Latin America and the Caribbean. The future of our hemisphere is closely tied to these relationships, and improving trade will play a vital role in building important links with our Hispanic neighbors. Main-taining open and free trade creates job opportunities and promotes economic growth, improving the welfare of every citizen in every land it touches. Thus, we will negotiate for freer markets, which will allow us the opportunity to obtain better protections for our hemisphere’s environment and will promote political freedom throughout the region. We have a great opportunity before us. By working together, we can achieve a fully democratic hemisphere, bound together by good will, cultural understanding, and free trade. The many contributions of Hispanic Americans to our Nation will help us reach this important goal by helping connect our country with the Hispanic nations to our south. This month, we celebrate the talents, culture, and spirit of Hispanic Americans, which deeply enrich our country and bless our people. The Congress, by Public Law 100-402, has authorized and requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating September 15 through October 15, as “National Hispanic Heritage Month.” I am proud to do so. NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 15 through October 15, 2001, as National Hispanic Heritage Month. I call upon all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate ceremonies and activities. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-eighth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand one, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-sixth. George W. Bush Homeowners Insurance? Cont. from page 19 and its contents after depreciation. Replacement cost is the amount it would take to replace or rebuild a home or repair damages with materials of similar kind and quality, without deducting for depreciation. “It is important that consumers understand this distinction,” Bell said. “In the event of a covered loss, an actual cash value payout could be thousands of dollars lower than a benefit calculated at the replacement cost.” The NAIC provides extensive information, tips and considerations regarding homeowners insurance on its consumer education Web site, Insure U (http:// www.InsureUonline.org). The entire site is also available in Spanish (http:// w w w. i n s u re u o n l i n e . o rg / espanol). Insurance Tips for Homeowners from the NAIC’s Insure U Web Site — Increase your insurance coverage as you enhance the value of your home and acquire expensive possessions, such as furniture, computers, stereos and televisions. — In maintaining your residence, realize that you are liable for things that happen on your premises. Keep in mind that in many states you could be held legally responsible for the actions of anyone who drinks in your home and then has an accident in your house or after leaving it. Your policy should protect you against lawsuits due to these types of liability issues. — As you acquire more valuables - jewelry, family heirlooms, antiques, art consider purchasing an additional “floater” or “rider” to your policy to cover these special items. They’re typically not covered by a basic homeowners or renters policy. — It’s a good idea to make an inventory of all of your personal property, along with a photograph or video of each room. Also, save your receipts for major items and keep them in a safe place away from your house or apartment. That will make it easier if you ever need to file a claim. “Consumers also should protect themselves from being scammed by fake insurance companies selling bogus insurance policies,” said Catherine J. Weatherford, NAIC Executive Vice President and CEO. “All they need to do is take a few minutes to stop, call their state insurance department, and confirm that a company is legitimate and authorized to sell insurance in their state before purchasing insurance.” For more info about insurance, consumers can visit the Spanish-language site, www.InsureUonline.org/ español. 13 de septiembre - 20 de septiembre 2007 Page 19 Bienes Raíces REAL ESTATE In today’s market condition we are seeing properties on the market for many months, in some cases up to 6 to a year. But in many situations, we can’t blame the market. As owners, we need to play a very important role in the sale of our homes. Here are a few tips to help your property stand out from the rest. 10 Ways to Make Your House More Salable Rosana Ramponi Broker Associate Prudential Professional, REALTORS ® Office: (719) 599-9300 Cell: (719) 964-2601 E-mail: [email protected] www.rosanaramponi.com 1. Get rid of clutter. Throw out or file stacks of newspapers and magazines. Pack away most of your small decorative items. Store out-of-season clothing to make closets seem roomier. Clean out the garage. 2. Wash your windows and screens to let more light into the interior. 3. Keep everything extra clean. Wash fingerprints from light switch plates. Mop and wax floors. Clean the stove and refrigerator. A clean house makes a better first impression and convinces buyers that the home has been well cared for. 4. Get rid of smells. Clean carpeting and drapes to eliminate cooking odors, smoke, and pet smells. Open the windows. 5. Put higher wattage bulbs in light sockets to make rooms seem brighter, especially basements and other dark rooms. Replace any burnt-out bulbs. 6. Make minor repairs that can create a bad impression. Small problems such as sticky doors, torn screens, cracked caulking, or a dripping faucet may seem trivial, but they’ll give buyers the impression that the house isn’t well maintained. 7. Tidy your yard. Cut the grass, rake the leaves, trim the bushes, and edge the walks. Put a pot or two of bright flowers near the entryway. 8. Patch holes in your driveway and reapply sealant, if applicable. 9. Clean your gutters. 10. Polish your front doorknob and door numbers. Homeowners Insurance? Cont. from page 7 Hurricane Katrina victims whose claims were denied because they lacked flood insurance. “Many homeowners learned the hard way that their insurance policies did not provide flood protection,” said Walter Bell, NAIC President and Alabama Insurance Commissioner. “We strongly encourage consumers in floodprone areas to check whether they are properly covered.” According to the NAIC, flood insurance polices are available from the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and are often sold by agents who sell homeowners insurance policies. The NAIC survey also revealed other misunderstandings when it comes to common loss situations - none of which are covered by standard homeowners insurance policies - such as: — 68 percent think vehicles such as cars, boats and motorcycles stolen from or damaged on their property are covered. — 51 percent think damages from a break in the water line on their property supplying water to their home are covered. — 35 percent think damages from earthquakes are covered. “Many homeowners could be seriously harmed financially by misunderstandings about their insurance,” Bell said. “It is critical that consumers look closely at their policies and ask their insurance agents detailed questions to become fully aware of what is, and what is not, covered.” The NAIC survey revealed another type of potential misunderstanding. Twentyfour percent of respondents indicated their policies insured their homes for the actual cash value, while 64 percent said their policies covered the replacement cost. Another 12 percent said they did not know which type of coverage - actual cash value or replacement cost - they purchased. Actual cash value is the amount it would take to repair or replace damage to a home Cont. on page 18 Trust us with............. Your Child's Eyes Vision Center For Children 2857 E. The Cry of Mexican Independence ¡Mexicanos, viva México! El grito de independencia, the cry of independence, and the ringing of bells in town squares will sound throughout Mexico and Mexican communities on Wednesday, 15 September at 11 p.m. A day of festivities culminates in this emotional cry for freedom. The celebration remembers the courage of the Mexican people called to arms by Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla in Dolores, Guanajuato. Miguel Hidalgo and the beginning of the independence movement: (The head figure and chief instigator of the Mexican Independence movement was Miguel Hidalgo, the Creole parish priest of the small town of Dolores. Soon after becoming a priest, Hidalgo began to promote the idea of an uprising by the native and mixed-blood peasantry against wealthy Spanish land-owners and aristocrats. He even promoted fornication and other priests considered him a heretic, false priest. He realized the need for diversification of industrial activities in an area that had the mines of Guanajuato as its major business. At the same time, during his seven years at Dolores, Hidalgo promoted discussion groups at his house, where indígenas, mestizos, criollos, and peninsulares were all welcomed. The themes of these discussions were current events, to which Hidalgo added his own input of social and economic concerns. The independence movement was born out of these informal discussions and was directed against Spanish domination of political and economic life in New Spain.) In the early hours of September 16, 1810, father Hidalgo (1753-1811), accompanied by several conspirators –Iganacio Allende, Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez- roused his congregation with the first grito and rang the bell of his little church, calling everyone to fight for liberty. This was the beginning of the Independence War, which lasted 10 years. Hidalgo exhorted his congregation to fight against hundreds of years of oppression and brutality at the hands of the hated gachupines, the Spanish ruling elites. The call spread out across the land sparking off the Mexican War of Independence. On September 27, 1821, Spain and Mexico ratified the Treaty of Córdoba granting independence from Spain. The treaty guaranteed the equality of all Mexicans, that Roman Catholicism would be the national religion and that Mexico would be a constitutional monarchy. Each year Mexicans the world over remember Hidalgo’s first cry in the early hours of the 16 September and celebrate their freedom, but on the 15th not the 16th. Why the change? It’s a simple answer, President Porfírio Diaz began the tradition as the 15th was his birthday! In Mexico City the day of fiesta culminates in the zócalo, Mexico’s most famous plaza. Between 11 p.m. and midnight the bell that Father Hidalgo originally rung, now hanging in the President’s tower, rings out and the names of the revolutionaries are read to the cheering crowd. Rather than a call to arms, this is a cry for freedom and the sound of gunfire is replaced by roar of fireworks. Cinco de Mayo, or May 5, is commonly confused with Mexican Independence Day; in fact, this day commemorates the Battle of Puebla between Mexican and French forces in 1862. y ¡Visítenos! 908 N.
